    Smokejumpers
Every year, wildfires destroy millions of hectares of forest. Homes are damaged, and thousands of people die. Smokejumpers are helping to stop this.
    What is the smokejumper?
Smokejumpers are a special type of firefighter. They jump from planes into areas that are difficult to reach by car or on foot, like the middle of a mountain forest. They race to put out fires as fast as they can.
    What do smokejumpers do?
At a fire site, smokejumpers first examine the land and decide how to fight the fire. Their main goal is to stop a fire from spreading. Using basic equipment such as shovels and axes, smokejumpers clear land of burnable material like plants and other dry material. They carry water with them too, but only a limited amount.
    Who can be a smokejumper?
Although the majority of smokejumpers are men, more women are joining. The most important things are your height and weight. Smokejumpers employed in the US, for example, must be 120 to 200 pounds (54 to 91 kilograms), so they don’t get hurt when they land, or get blown by strong winds. Smokejumpers must also be capable of surviving in the wild.
The work is dangerous, and the hours are long. But for these firefighters, smokejumping isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires, and live in the forest. As a 28-year-old smokejumper Bob Smith says, “This is the best job for tough guys.”
    11. What is the first thing a smokejumper does after arriving at a fire site?
    A. Clear the land. B. Look for water.
    C. Study the area. D. Record the accident.
    12. If you want to be a smokejumper, you must be ________.
    A. male B. heavy
    C. older than 28 years of age D. within a certain weight range
    13. From which website would you most probably find this text?
    A. all-jobs. org B. what-is-on. com
    C. adventuretours. org D. extremesports. com
C 12. D 13. A

On one of her trips to New York several years ago, Eudora Welty decided to take a couple of New York friends out to dinner. They settled in at a comfortable East Side cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table.
“Hey, aren’t you from Mississippi?” the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. “I’m from Mississippi too.”
Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.
“They began telling me all the news of Mississippi,” Welty said. “I didn’t know what my New York friends were thinking.”
Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Welty’s new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi.
“My friends said: ‘Now we believe your stories,’” Welty added. “And I said: ‘Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.’”
Sitting on a sofa in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation.
“I don’t make them up,” she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years. “I don’t have to.”
Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Welty’s people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets of her native Jackson, Miss., from conversations overheard on a bus. It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story.
    14. What happened when Welty was with her friends at the cafe?
    A. Two strangers joined her.
    B. Her childhood friends came in.
    C. A heavy rain ruined the dinner.
    D. Some people held a party there.
    15. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 6 refers to Welty’s ________.
    A. readers B. parties
    C. friends D. stories
    16. What can we learn about the characters in Welty’s fiction?
    A. They live in big cities.
    B. They are mostly women.
    C. They come from real life.
    D. They are pleasure seekers.
A 15. D 16. C
根据第一段的"another customer was approaching their table"和第三段的"the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair"可知,先后有两个陌生人(一位女士及其同伴)加入了Welty的聚会,故选A。
Now we believe your stories"可知,them指代的是Welty写的小说里面的故事,听了Welty和两个陌生人的有关密西西比的谈话之后,Welty的朋友相信了Welty小说里的故事都是来源于生活,故选D。
I don’t make them up"和最后一段最后一句"Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story."
文章中的代词it,that,he,him或them可以指上文提到的人或物,其中it和that还可以指一件事。

    C
If you have trouble falling asleep, listen up. You might fall asleep 15 minutes earlier and wake up far less during the night if you put on a pair of socks at bedtime.
To understand why, you first need to grasp the relationship between core body temperature and sleep. During daylight hours, the human body has an average temperature of 37℃. But your core body temperature drops as much as 1.2℃ over one night’s sleep. This gradual decrease is a key part of how we sleep. Put simply, the faster you can lower your core body temperature, the faster you will fall asleep.
One way that your body controls its temperature is through blood vessels (血管)in the skin. If your body is too hot, your blood vessels widen, pushing the warmer blood nearer the skin’s surface, helping it to cool. If your body is too cold, the opposite happens. Your blood vessels narrow, restricting the flow of blood to the surface.
The palms of your feet are one of your body’s most efficient heat exchangers, since they are hairless and less protected than other skin surfaces. Researchers have shown that warming the feet before going to sleep using a warm foot bath or by wearing socks promotes blood vessel widening, which in turn lowers the body’s core temperature faster than going to sleep with cold, bare feet.
Scientists suspect that socked feet have a sleep-benefiting effect on the brain as well. The warm-sensitive neurons(神经元)in the brain become more active when there’s a temperature difference between the body’s core and the feet. Researchers have found that these neurons become more active as we get sleepy and slow down as we wake up, so that warming up the feet before bedtime may give them an extra drive, making you feel sleepier.
In a small study, researchers found that wearing a pair of special “sleeping socks” not only sped up the coming of sleep, but increased overall sleep time by an average of 30 minutes and cut nighttime waking episodes in half. If you’re worried about becoming too warm, look for socks made of natural fibers.
    17. In which section of a newspaper can we find this text?
    A. Advertisement. B. Lifestyle. C. Opinion. D. Trend.
18 What change does warm feet bring to the body?
    A. Slowed brain reaction. B. Narrowed blood vessels.
    C. Reduced core body temperature. D. Decreased blood pressure.
    19. How might the brain’s warm-sensitive neurons help sleep?
    A. They might help to warm up the feet.
    B. They might speed up temperature growth
    C. They might slow down the brain’s blood flow.
    D. They might bring on sleepiness when activated.
    20. What is the finding of the small study mentioned in the last paragraph?
    A. The warmth of socks depends on their material.
    B. People wearing socks fall asleep 50 percent faster.
    C. Special socks increase temperature more effectively.
    D. Sock wearing helps people sleep longer and wake less
B 18. C 19. D 20. D

通读全文,尤其是第一段的“If you have trouble falling asleep, listen up. You might fall asleep 15 minutes earlier and wake up far less during the night if you put on a pair of socks at bedtime.(如果你难以入睡,听好了。如果你在睡觉前穿上一双袜子,你可能会提前15分钟入睡,而且晚上醒来的次数会少得多 )”可知,本文主要讲的是“穿袜子睡觉有助于睡眠”,睡觉是属于生活方面的内容,因此该文章最可能出现在报纸生活方式版块,故选B。
    【18题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的“Researchers have shown that warming the feet before going to sleep using a warm foot bath or by wearing socks promotes blood vessel widening. which in turn lowers the body's core temperature faster than going to sleep with cold, bare feet.(研究人员发现,睡前暖足浴或穿袜子暖脚会促进血管扩张。这反过来会降低身体的核心温度,比光着脚睡觉更快)”可知,暖脚会给身体带来的变化是降低核心体温。故选C。
    【19题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段的“Researchers have found that these neurons become more active as we get sleepy and slow down as we wake up, so that warming up the feet before bedtime may give them an extra drive, making you feel sleepier.(研究人员已经发现,当我们困倦时,这些神经元会变得更加活跃,而在我们醒来时,它们就会变慢,所以睡觉前暖脚可能会给它们额外的动力,让你感觉更困 )”可知,大脑的温敏神经元被激活时可能会导致困倦,因此帮助睡眠,故选D。
根据最后一段的“In a small study, researchers found that wearing a pair of special “sleeping socks" not only sped up the coming of sleep, but increased overall sleep time by an average of 30 minutes and cut nighttime waking episodes in half.(在一项小型研究中,研究人员发现,穿一双特殊的“睡眠袜子”不仅能加速睡眠,还能使整体睡眠时间平均增加30分钟,并将夜间醒来的时间减半)”可知,穿袜子有助于人们睡得更长,醒得更少,故选D。

Australian magpies (喜鹊) are common in Australia, loved and feared in equal measure. The fear arises from the fact that nesting females aggressively dive at animals-including, or perhaps especially, humans-often drawing blood. The love comes from the fact that they are simply everywhere, easy to identify, and possessed of a song that has come to represent the sound of nature.
And also, they seem rather clever. Now, research by zoologists at the University of Wester Australia has corroborated this-but their levels of intelligence are dependent on the size of the group they belong to.
To reach this conclusion, the Australian scientist examined 56 birds from 14 groups of wild magpies living in the suburbs of Western Australia’s capital city, Perth. The groups ranged between 3 and. 12 individuals. Each magpie-tested separately to avoid the risk of it getting help from its mates-was put through four tasks that tested its cognitive(认知的)abilities. These included finding food hidden in a transparent container, finding food hidden in differently colored containers, and a memory test involving finding hidden food. Adult and young birds were tested repeatedly and the results were clear. The birds that lived in larger groups were quicker to master the tasks than those that lived in smaller ones. The difference between intelligent big group members and less intelligent little group members appeared very early in the birds’ lives.
In a paper published in the journal Nature, lead author Benjamin Ashton and his colleagues report that birds living in large groups “show increased cognitive performance”. Moreover, this “general intelligence factor”is strongly linked to reproductive (生殖的)success in females.
Ashton suggests that the findings indicate the evolution of intelligence is influenced by pressures present in a complex social group. “Our results suggest that the social environment plays a key role in the development of cognition, ” he says.
    21. Which word best describes Australians’ feelings about Australian magpies?
    A. Frightened
    B. Loving
    C. Mixed
    D. Tolerant
    22. What does the underlined word “corroborated” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Assessed
    B. Confirmed
    C. Disapproved
    D. Doubted
    23. How were the magpies treated in the research?
    A. They were allowed to seek help.
    B. They were put in containers.
    C. They were divided into some groups.
    D. They were studied individually.
    24. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Magpies seem to be more social birds
    B. Magpies in small groups often perform better
    C. Large-group living increases magpies’ intelligence
    D. Cognitive levels affect magpies’ reproductive success
C 22. B 23. D 24. C

We often hear about schools cutting back on bus routes to save money, yet plenty of communities have their buses stopping almost as often as the mail truck. While the presence of sidewalks, and the safety of area roads, play a role in who gets house-to-house pickup or end-of-the-street pickup, Peter Mannella, director at the New York Association for Pupil Transportation says community culture can play an even larger role in the transportation situation.
For example: Several years ago Bethlehem tried spacing out its stops, says Mannella. The parents were unhappy, expressed as much and, within three days, the routes were back to their original frequency. “You can say ‘We are going to save $100,000 by not stopping at every house,’ but parents don’t want their kids walking,” Mannella says. As you’d expect, this is especially true in bad weather or during winter.
As a student in the 1980s, we walked to our stops. The neighborhood wait-spot was a good quarter mile away. Parents didn’t make a fuss (大惊小怪), and no child was injured. In fact, the walking was good — it woke us up each morning. Not to mention, the sense of community that came with hanging out together each morning waiting for bus No. 23 to roll up and take us all to school.
Thing is, a lot has changed since the 1980s. Too many people are texting and driving, making them as dangerous on the roads as drunken drivers. And, with reduced work forces at many companies, parents often work longer hours, meaning they aren’t around to guard their kids to and from stops like many parents did when we were growing up.
So I’ll give them an understanding pass on not wanting their children to walk a mile each way to get to and from school. I can’t agree with the complaints of having kids walk to a community neighborhood stop, though. If you worry they’re going to be cold, get them a hat. If you fear they may miss the bus, send them out the door five minutes earlier.
    25. What do we know about Bethlehem’s plan?
    A. It ended up in failure.
    B. It lasted for a long time.
    C. It wasn’t put into practice.
    D. It saved a lot of money.
    26. What can we learn about students in the 1980s from paragraph 3?
    A. They woke up early in the morning.
    B. They were driven to school by parents.
    C. They usually hung out with their neighbors.
    D. They benefited by walking to a neighborhood stop.
    27. Why are today’s parents unwilling to let their children walk to a neighborhood stop?
    A. Drivers do not concentrate on driving.
    B. The weather conditions are awful in winter.
    C. Children might be late for school.
    D. The house-to-house pickup is available.
    28. What is the author’s attitude towards children walking to bus stops?
    A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Supportive. D. Critical.
A 26. D 27. A 28. C

What happens when you want to go from one place to another, but there's water in the way? That's the problem people faced for hundreds of years in the area that is now New York City. In the city, there is a natural canal called the Narrows, separating Brooklyn on one side from Staten Island on the other.
But the Narrows isn't really so narrow. The water is almost a mile wide, and it's more than 100 feet deep. ___29___ When they wanted to talk to each other, they climbed into their boats and sailed across.
By the late 1800s, circumstances had changed dramatically. Population growth meant there were now many people needing to travel between Staten Island and Brooklyn for work. ___30___
Between 1888 and 1920 there were two major efforts to build a train tunnel to connect the areas. ___31___ Proposals to build a connecting bridge made during the 1910s also ended in failure due to opposition from the US Navy.
Finally, after World War II, there were so many people living in New York City that leaders decided Brooklyn and Staten Island needed a direct connection. Since tunnels were too expensive, they decided to build a bridge. The design selected had two separate roadways stacked on top of each other. ___32___ Construction, which took five years, was completed in 1964 and cost $320 million. Today about 190,000 cars and trucks cross the bridge every day.
___33___ But in the case of the Narrows, figuring out a good solution took hundreds of years.
    A. Sometimes getting from one place to another is easy.
    B. Both were quickly abandoned however due to the high costs involved.
    C. Neither road was large enough to satisfy the existing transport demands.
    D. It was anticipated that the new train system would help the areas grow even faster.
    E. Taking a boat every time was very slow, expensive and, in bad weather, unreliable.
    F. Both would hang in the air from thick steel cables, supported by two giant steel towers.
    G. For a long time that wasn't a problem, because only a few people lived in Brooklyn and Staten Island.
