A
Even if you are naturally shy, these three tricks will help you to quickly build a new social circle in any new city.
1. Take pictures
One of the great things about taking pictures at an event or party is that it gives you an excuse to get in touch with the person later. Everybody loves seeing pictures of themselves, and it’s very easy after taking a picture to say “if you’d like I can email it to you”. This can be the seed that leads to new connections. The next time you hear about a fun event email your new contacts to let them know about it.
2. Eat alone in public
You might feel self-conscious eating by yourself but it has an important benefit: you are much easier to approach when you are alone. People may be afraid of interrupting you or being rude if you are in a conversation with someone else. Bring a book or newspaper to read (this will make you feel less self-conscious). Plus, having an interesting book with you will give others an excuse to start a conversation if they’ve read it.
3. Join a class, sports team, or club
Yoga, salsa dancing, volleyball, Toastmasters (a public speaking club), a class for work, etc. Take up a new hobby or continue an old one!
These are all great places to meet new people, primarily because you will be forced to see the same people over and over again in the class. You will automatically make friends with them if you have a common interest and are forced to see each other again.
Tips:
*In the beginning, never turn down an invitation from someone, even if it’s something you wouldn’t normally do.
*Email your new friends with fun things to do instead of always asking what their plans are. If they have a better plan you can drop yours and join them. This will help establish you as someone who is contributing value instead of just taking it (people want this in a friend).
*Don’t let little things in life upset you or be a negative person. People don’t want to be around someone like that!
36. _______ can give you an excuse to get in touch with the person later.
A. Taking pictures of others
B. Eating by yourself in public

B. start a conversation with those who have friends aside
C. invite others to your apartment to eat together
D. sit on your own in public places
38. According to the text, which of the following is NOT mentioned as an advantage of joining a class?
A. It helps you find out people who share a common interest with you.
B. It helps you find out your interest and take up a new hobby.
C. It offers an opportunity to meet the same people repeatedly.
D. It is a good way to meet new people and make friends in a new city.

B
Traveling alone can be daunting. I have traveled by myself many times but, on every occasion, there was someone to meet me at the other end of the bus, train or plane journey. This time was different.
Last week I had a holiday, from work, but none of my friends had the same week off. I decided that I still wanted to do something, so I booked a train ride to Toronto and reserved a bed in a hostel for one week.
One week by myself. Would I be lonely? Would I be bored? Quite the opposite. In fact, there are many benefits that come from traveling alone. Firstly, I was able to do whatever I wanted. I spent hours in museums that would have seemed boring and dull to some of my friends. I walked all around the city, which' some people may have found too exhausting. Instead of relying on someone else to remember directions or to suggest activities to do, I discovered my' independence and developed map-reading skills that I didn’t know I had. I could get up and go to sleep when I wanted and I didn’t have to wait for anyone else to shower and get ready every morning. Being in the safe environment of a hostel with like-minded travelers also gives a great opportunity to meet new people from all over the world, which can help combat loneliness.
In spite of the benefits, I found that there were also some disadvantages of traveling alone. I missed having someone to talk to and to bounce ideas off. Experiences are often more enjoyable if they are shared, and part of the fun of traveling is the memories you have afterwards. Without a travel partner, I won’t be able to laugh about and remember my Toronto adventure with a friend or family member in years to come.
In addition, eating in a restaurant or cooking in the hostel was less fun on my own.
I am very proud of myself for traveling alone, and I had a fantastic time in Toronto. However, in the future, I think I will always prefer to travel with another person or in a small group. Though, maybe it depends on who you travel with I would rather be by myself than with someone who is lazy, difficult and argumentative.

We human beings need to stay in touch with nature-many studies show how much better people feel when in sight of trees. Yet even more importantly, nature itself needs us to stay in touch. Many politicians and scientists have told us that we can "conquer" nature, but in reality nature will always be beyond our control---we do have the power to destroy it. The fate of all the animals and their habitats depends largely on our attitude towards them. Whether or not we ourselves survive depends on how well we look after the rest. For our sake as well as theirs,we need to consider it seriously.
But how can we care at all if we spend our lives indoors?Born in South London at the end of the Second World War,at least I knew what a sparrow was(they're rare now)and you couldn't put a spade into our tiny garden without cutting a worm in half. We knew, too, that milk comes from cows and that old men can grow amazing carrots on poor land. Ultra-urban(极度城市化)as we may have been,at least we were in touch.
"Now we have a generation who frankly are not in touch. So how can they care if the countryside is sold off to the highest bidders, and used to park helicopters, and our crops come free from Monsanto and our livestock live in factories? They will know no other way.
But if we settle for the ultra-urban life,if we allow all wilderness to be compromised and hand our farming over to industrial chemists then, quite simply, the world will fall apart--as it has been doing already. We have to rethink what agriculture is really for,and why conservation matters to us,as well as to other creatures. Changes of strategies begin with attitude and attitude begins with awareness.
46. Which of the following opinions will the author be for?
A. Technology will help humans control nature completely.
B. Conquering nature is the policy of human society.
C. Humans have to find a way to live in harmony with nature.
D. We will lose control of nature with the development of society.
47. The second paragraph is intended to tell us that city people in the past_____.
A. were in close touch with nature
B. managed to survive in the war
C. killed the worms in the earth cruelly
D. had a healthier diet than us
48. The new generation show no concern about the ultra-urban pattern just because _______
A. modern agriculture doesn't need hard work
B. high profits can be made by selling city land
C. they are cut off from nature
D. livestock living in factories are tastier
49. From the passage we can guess that Monsanto is likely to be____________
A. a chemical fertilizer plant
B. a scientist good at farming
C. a construction corporation
D. a big agricultural company
50. Towards the end of the passage, the author reminds us to_____________
A. move to the countryside
B. reflect on our past behaviors
C. leave space for wild animals
D. turn farms into big factories
C 47. A 48. C 49. D 50. B
For our sake as well as theirs,we need to consider it seriously.
根据第二段内容,特别是“Ultra-urban(极度城市化)as we may have been,at least we were in touch.”
根据第三段中的“Now we have a generation who frankly are not in touch.”

If I could give today’s young people three wishes, they would be: More hugs. More time outside in nature. More belief in their own power to change the world. While most people understand the importance of the first two wishes, the third one leaves some folks wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential.
Let’s start with the idea that all of us-especially young people-need heroes. We need them to be our guides on the difficult trail (足迹) we call life and to show us just how far we can go. And we need heroes today more than ever. Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity (名人) and a hero. And the difference is vital. A celebrity is all about fame (名望)-temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move. A hero, by contrast, is about character-qualities under the surface that aren’t visible until they take action.
Heroes are all around us. They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail.
Yet, young people hear a lot more about celebrities than about heroes in the media. The hidden message they get from all this is that their self-worth comes from what they buy-which shoes, which cell phone-not who they are down inside. What gets lost in this? Young people’s sense of their own potential for heroic qualities-their own power to make a positive difference in the world. Truth is, there is a potential hero, a future difference maker, in every young person. Each of them, from whatever background, is a positive force who can do something. All it takes for that to be true is belief.
How do we help young people believe in their own power? The best way is simply to share examples, of other young people who have made a difference.
Ryan, age 11, has worked tirelessly to raise money to provide clean drinking water to African villages. When he first heard about the plight (困苦) of African children who died from impure water, Ryan was only six years old. In the next five years, he raised over $500, 000-enough to build over 70 water wells.
Barbara, age 17, grew up on a farm in Texas. When she realized that local farmers were pouring their used motor oil into rivers, causing pollution, she organized the creation of a recycling center for crude (未加提炼的) oil. Her project has grown to include 18 recycling centers in Texas.
The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.
51. What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 2?
A. To give examples of celebrities and heroes around us.
B. To discuss the differences between celebrities and heroes.
C. To provide definitions of the words “celebrity” and “hero”.
D. To explain the details about being celebrities and heroes.
52. What is the meaning of the word “superficial” in Paragraph 2?
A. Not known.
B. Unexpected.
C. Undeveloped.
D. Without depth.
53. What could be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. Heroes make the world go round.
B. Heroes must believe in themselves.
C. Heroes focus on social welfare programs.
D. Heroes promote cooperation between people.
54. How does the author advance his view that young people have the potential to be a hero?
A. By defining the qualities that make a young person a hero.
B. By contrasting the achievements made by different young people.
C. By giving examples of young people who show the qualities of a hero.
D. By providing examples of qualities that have made young people famous.
55. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. More heroes are needed in the world.
B. Celebrities are reported too much in the media.
C. Adults should become role models for young people.
D. Young people should believe in their ability to make a difference.
B 52. D 53. A 54. C 55. D
根据文章第二段的“Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity (名人) and a hero.(我们的现代社会对于名人和英雄之间的区别非常困惑。)”可知,作者说出我们对“名人和英雄的区别”很困惑,所以接下来讲到了“A celebrity is all about fame (名望)-temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move. A hero, by contrast, is about character-qualities under the surface that aren’t visible until they take action.(名人就是名声——暂时的、superfacial名声,通常是因为那些显而易见的品质:漂亮的脸蛋、出色的舞姿。相比之下,英雄是指在他们采取行动之前才会显现出来的隐藏在表面之下的性格品质。)”,这是对这种区别的阐述,所以作者写第二段的目的是讨论名人与英雄的区别。故选B。
【52题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段的“usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move(通常是那些显而易见的品质:漂亮的脸蛋,很棒的舞步)”可知,名人所谓的名声是肤浅的,没有深度的,superficial的意思是“没有深度的”,和without depth意思相近,故选D。
根据文章第三段“They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail.(他们无私地致力于帮助他人、教育孩子和保护环境,真正地将我们的世界团结在一起。他们不需要名声或荣耀;他们只是想帮忙。在许多方面,这些无名英雄为我们所有人的航船领航。)”可知,英雄在这个世界上发挥着积极着作用,推动着世界积极的运转。故选A。
根据文章第五段中的“How do we help young people believe in their own power? The best way is simply to share examples, of other young people who have made a difference.(我们如何帮助年轻人相信自己的力量?最好的方法就是分享其他做出改变的年轻人的例子。)”可知,作者想用分享年轻人用自己的力量做出有影响的事的例子,来论证自己的观点。接下来两段分别列举Ryan和Barbara两位年轻人的事例,来说明年轻人具有成为英雄的潜力。再根据最后一段“The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.(这样的例子还有很多。这些只是年轻人发现自己可以利用自己的精力做一些伟大事情的几个例子。)”可知,作者就是用举例的方式来进一步阐述自己观点。故选C。
【55题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段的“While most people understand the importance of the first two wishes, the third one leaves some folks wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential.(虽然大多数人都明白前两个愿望的重要性,但第三个愿望让一些人想知道,为什么年轻人相信自己的力量如此重要。)”和最后一段的“These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.(这些只是年轻人发现自己可以利用自己的精力做一些伟大事情的几个例子。)”
At the age of forty-five, my usually well-ordered life became full of changes. After twenty-two years of working in a bank, a plan to use less staff led to the unemployment of over one hundred people. Unluckily, I was one of them.
My once secure future became uncertain. However, I was not a single parent, so the family did not depend only on my income and my husband can support the family. My motto has always been, “Change is good; change is progress”, but when it affected my livelihood, I had to change it. “Accept change and make the most of it.” From the beginning, I chose to look at this matter not as bad luck, but as a welcome chance. I refused to become sorry; instead, I actively planned to do something new and different.
Having a positive attitude made all the difference in the way I pursued the future. First, I decided to return to college and graduate many years later than I should have. Doing this at my age took more than a little courage. Not being a graduate had never held me back in my career in the bank, but now it’s a personal goal I longed to achieve. With a lot of determination, I went to evening classes and became an adult student. In the class, I became more and more confident. During this time, I realized that no matter what life throws in our way, nothing can hinder our personal growth.
The second thing I did to improve my inner self was to reevaluate my past life. It used to be filled with endless, and sometimes meaningless events. But now, my heart and life are completely around people I care for.
The loss of my job led to some positive changes in my life. Revisiting the past made room for the future. I realize that I have accepted the change, and am making the most of it.

59. How would you describe the author in terms of personalities? (no more than 5 words)
60. What’s your attitude towards the “changes” in your life? Please explain. (no more than 20 words)
56. The bank’s plan to use less staff. Or: Less staff in the bank

Or: Return to college and devote more time to her beloved people.
58. stop/ prevent; prohibit /forbid
59. She is optimistic and determined.
