Here is a piece of good news. In order to make you get prepared for future careers, we have invited Mr. Lee, an experienced HR manager of a foreign company, to give you a lecture about career planning. The lecture will be held in the school hall from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm next Thursday. Mr. Lee will introduce various jobs available in the job market and their related requirements. There will also be a question-and-answer session at the end of the talk, so you had better prepare some questions.

Everyone is welcome to attend the lecture.

On Desiree’s fifth birthday, she received the package from the MacKinnons. She opened the package and found an adaptation of The Little Mermaid and a card. Trish read the letter to Desiree. “It all started in November when my husband, Wade, went outside and found a mermaid balloon that you sent to your daddy...” Trish paused. A tear began to trickle down Desiree’s cheek. “There are no stores in heaven, so your daddy picked us to do his shopping for him,” Trish continued. “I know your daddy would want you to be happy. I know he loves you very much. Lots of love, the MacKinnons.”

When Trish finished reading the letter from the MacKinnons, she looked at Desiree. “I knew Daddy would find a way not to forget me,” the child said. During the next few weeks, the MacKinnons and Desiree often telephoned. In the following months, whenever Desiree wanted to talk with her dad, she called the MacKinnons. They would talk to her and comfort her. Desiree understands now that although her father has passed away, she is still loved and cherished by many people.

M: I've read Romeo and Juliet and The Merchant of Venice. The language is hard to understand because it is a very old type of English.

M:⑦ That's the Mulantou Lighthouse. It's the tallest lighthouse in China, with a height of about 72 meters.

W: Lighthouses are very important public facilities, aren't they?

M: Of course.⑥They protect ships, like the one we are on, from danger. This lighthouse is very important here in Hainan.

W: It doesn't look very old.

M: In fact, it was built in 1995 and it has been protecting this dangerous water area called Mulan Bay since then.

W: I'm really worried about the environment ⑥Too many people waste too many resources. They don't realize

how serious the problem is. Neither do they care.

M: In what way are they wasting resources?

W: Like using too much water. They leave the water on when they aren't using them.

M: Yes, that seems very common nowadays.

W: Exactly. I think people should be more aware of waste. The planet's resources aren't endless. We need to save them.

M: Maybe we should write a letter to the newspapers.

W:⑨ Or we post something about it on social media, so that more people can see it.

W: Joe, can you tell me what is happening tonight?⑪ As a Chinese person, I know nothing about Bonfire Night. M:⑩ Okay, tonight we need to go down to the Milage Green in time for the lighting of the bonfire about 7:15. At 7:45 the fireworks will go off and the crowds will cheer.

W: What is the Village Green?

M: It's an area of grass we have in this village. And events are sometimes held there.

W: Who has made the fire?

M: Lots of people give their spare wood. Sometimes children go round collecting it, so we can have a really big fire.

W: How many people does it take to organize this?

M:⑪ There are many volunteers. Sometimes schools are involved.

W: Is this about history or is it just to have fun?

M: Bonfire Night is about history. It all comes from history of England and the Houses of Parliament. But it is great fun, too-great fun to organize and great fun to watch.

W: How did it start?

M: Four hundred years ago, a man called Guy Fawkes planned to kill King James I by blowing up the Houses of Parliament It was called the Gunpowder Plot.

W: But it failed?

M: Yes, and every year since then, on November 5, models of Guy Fawkes have been burned on fires all over the country.

W:⑬ Hey is everything all right, Mitch? You’ve got a strange look on your face.

M: I just found out that…oh, I can't believe this!

W: Look, no matter what happens, we'll face it together; okay?

M: That’s sweet. But it’s not bad news. Quite the opposite, actually.

W: What? I'm confused. Tell me what’s going on.

M: Tracy, I’ve just been offered a job in Paris.

W: What?⑭That's like 5000 miles away from Toronto! And I didn't even know you were looking for another job.

M: I wasn’t. I like my current position at Sydney Design. I just applied for this job because it looked like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.I didn't tell you because it seemed like my chance of actually getting it was one in a million.

W: Well, congratulations! But I'm not so sure we can move to another country.

M: Tracy, the position is Assistant Director of the European office. I’d be in charge of basically the whole company out there.

W: It sounds great, but are you sure we can afford to move and live there?

M: The job comes with a comer office, a car with a driver, and an apartment overlooking the Eiffiel lower. Plus, they'll cover all moving costs and pay for school for our kids.

W:⑯Um... it looks like I’ll have to start learning French!

W: Please join us for the 7th annual Round-the-Lake Marathon University Challenge on Sunday, October 7th. Our school will be competing against Lees University, Midlands University and the City School of Engineering. ⑱We have won four of the past six marathons, although Lees University was the winner last year. Let’s come together and run for another victory!

Our team is right now seeking students, teachers and other staff members to join the competition. According to the rules of the challenge, each competing university is allowed to send a team with as many as 50 runners.

To become a team member, please contact Rachael Daniel at adaniel@yahoo. com or 1-441-224-7465 to send in your application, and make sure to do so by Sunday, September 9th. Our school will then organize training for all team members over the following four weeks before the marathon. After the training, each team member will be given a school T-shirt with their names printed on.
