Language Clubs
Are you a native Spanish, French, or German speaker?Or maybe you just really like the foreign language class!Either way, you should consider joining your school’s language clubs and lean a new language during your past time. When I was in middle school, I met my English literature teacher, who was new to teaching. She was only 22 but she always did her best to make learning fun. She would give us a personalized mini notebook for every student’s birthday. I had this simple small notebook. She had filled the first couple pages telling me how much she loved having me as a student, how far she knew I would go, and other affirmations. It seemed small but for a 13-year-old child who had a hard home life, it made all the difference.
In my junior year of high school, in one English class, we were discussing a story when one student called Carl made a point. The teacher was dismissive(不以为然的)and said Carl was wrong. The next day, the teacher said he was wrong to dismiss what Carl said so quickly. “Let’s take a look at that again.” After the discussion, it became clear that Carl’s point was indeed unreasonable, but I was impressed the teacher publicly owned his mistake and did what he should.
When I was in grade one, my mother gave me one really awful haircut. On the first day back at school, the kids picked on me horribly, so I ran out and hid. The headmaster found me and took me back. He asked me to wait outside for a minute while he talked to the class. The next day, we had an assembly (展会) with the entire school and he walked up on the stage with his head shaved completely bald and criticized the bad-mannered behavior.
Twenty years later, I ran into him at the local college. I thought he didn’t remember me, but he said my name and the event. The man was and is a hero in my eyes.
4. What does the underlined word “affirmations” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Instructions. B. Suggestions. C. Encouragements. D. Descriptions.
5. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Carl read a new story to the class before discussion.
B. I was impressed by the teacher’s teaching method.
C The English teacher made an immediate apology to Carl in class.
D. Carl’s point wasn’t paid much attention by the teacher at first.
6. Which of the following best describes the headmaster?
A. Loyal and brave. B. Patient and organized.
C. Funny and strict. D. Kind and respectable.
7. Where can you probably read this passage?
A. Life column. B. Science fiction. C. Fashion magazine. D. Entertainment newspaper.
C
Life can be hard for teens. Negative (消极的)feelings such as sadness are common for them. But for some teens, those feelings take a more extreme turn. Their negative feelings don’t come and go. Instead, those feelings can point to a disease called depression (抑郁)—one that may require treatment.
Some kids suffering depression stay away from friends and family members. Some others respond with anger. Some teens may skip school or stop eating or sleeping. Some may start drinking wine or taking drugs. However, teachers, parents or even a teen’s close friends may find it hard to tell whether these kinds of behavior are just part of being a teen or signs of something truly serious.
Each year, about 5, 000 Americans between the ages of 15 and 24 take their own lives. And there is a link between mental (精神的) illness and the teens’ act of killing themselves. That’s according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, based in Washington, D. C. “Most children and teenagers who try to take their own lives have a serious mental health disorder, usually depression,” it says. And as a disease, depression can last for ten years or longer.
Even depressed teens themselves may not realize they have this problem. More than three million Americans between the ages of 12 and 17 experienced depression in 2016. However, most likely went untreated. A 2001 study by researchers at Harvard University and Yale University found that half of all the teens with depression didn’t get help until they became adults. And only one in three had been found suffering depression by their primary care doctor, another study reported. So how can people tell the behavior showing growing mental pains from a sign of the disease? One key is a sharp change in behavior. Another warning sign: persistence (持续)in that new behavior—meaning that it sticks around for two weeks or longer.
Luckily, the American Academy of Pediatrics, or AAP, has now asked its doctors to start screening preteens and teens for signs of depression. And AAP is also asking its doctors to receive mental-health training. It wants them to become more aware(有意识的)of the signs of depression. Where depression is found, doctors will then work with mental-health professionals to find out how to treat it so that the patients can feel good again. The new guidelines can make it easier for teens to get the help they need.
8. What can we learn about the disease called depression?
A. It is not easy for people to notice it. B. It usually doesn’t require treatment.
C. People suffering it usually respond with anger. D. Teenagers experience it more than other age groups.
9. What does the author mainly tell us in Paragraph 3?
A. Depression usually ends up untreated. B. Depression can lead to very bad results.
C. Depression may cause serious mental illness. D. Depression doesn’t happen in adults.
10. If one develops depression, what might he or she experience?
A. Strongly wanting to be with friends. B. Changing his or her behavior all the time.
C. Showing new behavior that lasts for weeks. D. Refusing to receive mental-health check-ups.
11. What is the American Academy of Pediatrics trying to do?
A. Teach doctors how to treat depression. B. Train normal people to notice depression.
C. Help teenagers struggling with depression. D. Ask every kid to have his or her mental health checked.
D
American education stands as a model for many countries around the world. Findings, however, have shown that students spend more time in American schools, but this time spent doesn’t exactly result in a better performance when compared with students in other countries, where the young spend fewer hours in school. Is this an important signal for the need to review the American school system?
It’s commonly believed that spending longer hours in school results in better performance; this has been found to be untrue. The time spent in school isn’t the only reason why students in Japan and South Korea do well in international examinations. The excellent performances of these students are tied to extra trainings such as cram schools (补习班)and the time spent during these extra periods of learning isn’t part of the time spent at school.
American schools start early in the morning, with the kids having lunch in school and they stay until school closes. But the school time is flexible (灵活)in countries such as Germany and Finland and the kids have lunch at home and won’t return, but will continue with homework.
It is interesting to note that the education system in America within the last ten years has embraced (包含)some school schedules such as online classes, evening classes and this has allowed students to take part in after-class activities. Many are the results of the development of technology.
It’s not actually advised to compare the American school system with that of other countries. What is important is that each country should work hard to make their education system achieve more results.
12. What do we know about the American school system?
A. It isn’t as good as we thought. B. It has improved greatly recently.
C. It will make school time shorter. D. It puts students under great stress.
13. How does the text explain the American school system in Paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By studying reasons.
C. By making comparison. D. By explaining its changes.
14. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A. More Americans can receive education.
B. American education is trying to be more flexible.
C. Technology makes American students perform better.
D. American schools are more developed than other countries’.
15. What’s the best title of the text?
A. The development of the education system in America
B. Differences between American school system and other countries’
C. Why have American kids done worse in school in recent years?
D. Is it necessary for American kids to spend long hours in school?

【答案】Dear Trapped,
As a student of your age, I understand your situation. The problem you are facing is common among our teenagers. However, it should be wise not to do anything that hurt your mother’s feelings. Here are a few suggestions.
First, it’s advisable to communicate more with your mom. I am sure that talks can help you understand each other better. They are also opportunities to let her know our ideas and attitudes towards many things. Second, I strongly recommend you should learn to do your own things well, proving to your mom that you are already a “grown-up”. It’s even better to share more of the housework, such as cleaning, washing and cooking, which is to strengthen the relationship between you two.
Hope my idea will work out.
Yours,
Li Hua
