Phil Wise’s heart raced as he pened ne f the transprt tubes. He and a team f scientists stepped back as a yung Tasmanian devil (袋獾) named Oddity came ut. Oddity tk a cautius lk arund and then ran int the frest n Maria Island.
Wise is a wildlife scientist frm the Save the Tasmanian Devil Prgram. The scientists wrking with this prgram study Tasmanian devils, mnitr their health, and track the devils fund in the wild. Oddity and 14 thers were raised in a reserve and then brught t Maria Island t be released (释放) int the wild. Thugh they are raised in zs all ver the wrld, devils live wild nly in Tasmania. They are imprtant t the ecsystem because they eat dead animals they find, which helps clean up the envirnment. Devils als eat animals such as wallabies, wmbats, and pssums, helping t keep thse ppulatins balanced.
But a cancer called Devil Facial Tumr Disease (DFTD) is killing devils n mainland Tasmania, endangering the species (物种). The gal f the scientists wh released Oddity and the thers was t create a ppulatin f disease-free Tasmanian devils n Maria Island. Oddity is a part f this “insurance ppulatin” f devils raised in zs and wildlife reserves. This means if the facial disease causes the Tasmanian devils t die ut in the wild, devils like Oddity can be sent back int disease-free areas f Tasmania, giving devils a chance t survive.
The scientists chse Maria Island fr the release because there is n DFTD there. It is separated frm mainland Tasmania by the cean. Devils frm the rest f Tasmania can’t get there, which prevents the facial disease frm spreading. Oddity started his new life n Maria Island. Life n this island ff the cast f Tasmania was a big change fr Oddity and the thers. These devils had little experience with ther kinds f animals and had t explre the land and find new bnes. Wise and his fellw scientists mnitred Oddity and the 14 ther Tasmanian devils. The animals did s well that 13 mre devils were released. The 28 riginal Tasmanian devils have reprduced; there are nw arund 80 devils. They are ding well n Maria Island, and the plan is cnsidered a success.
Wise says he is “extremely happy t knw that animals are getting a chance t be free in the wild in an area that is free f DFTD.It is the ultimate aim f all wh wrk t cnserve endangered species.”
34.Why did Wise and his team release the Tasmanian devils like Oddity t Maria Island?
A.T prevent DFTD killing Tasmanian devils ut. B.T find ut a treatment fr DFTD.
C.T cntrl the DFTD spread n mainland Tasmania. D.T prtect Maria Island frm DFTD.
35.What prbably made Maria Island chsen fr the release?
A.Its rich wildlife.B.Its gegraphic lcatin.
C.Its natural resurces.D.Its imprved ecsystem.
36.Hw was the released Tasmanian devils’ life?
A.Their safety was uncertain.B.Their number was ging up.
C.They hardly enjyed freedm.D.They gt well again frm DFTD.
37.What des the passage mainly talk abut?
A.A prgram studying Tasmanian devils.B.A disease attacking Tasmanian devils.
