    A

One day, a college student was taking a walk with a professor. As they went along, they saw lying in the path a pair of old shoes. They supposed the shoes belonged to a poor man who was made to work in a field close by, and who had nearly finished his day’s word.

The student turned to the professor, saying, “ Let us play the man a trick: we will hide his shoes, and hide ourselves behind those bushes, and wait to see his confusion when he cannot find

    them”.

“My young friend,” answered the professor, “we should never amuse ourselves at the expense of the poor. But you are rich, and may give yourself a much greater pleasure by tricking

on the poor man. Put a coin into each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch how the

    discovery affects him.”

The student did so, and they both placed themselves behind the bushes close by. The poor

man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and

shoes. After he slipped his foot into one of his shoes, he felt something hard. He bent down to feel

what it was, and found the coin. Astonishment and wonder were seen on his face.

He fixed his eyes on the coin, turned it round, and looked at it again and again. He then

looked around him on all sides, but no person was to be seen. He now put the money into his

pocket, and continued to put on the other shoe; but his surprise was doubled on finding the other

coin. His feelings overcame him. He fell upon his knees, looked up to heaven and cried a sincere

thanksgiving, in which he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread,

whom the timely help, from some unknown hand, would save from dying.

The student stood there, deeply affected, and his eyes filled with tears.“Now,” said the

professor, “are you not much better pleased than if you had played your intended trick?” The youth replied, “You have taught me a lesson which I will never forget.

Think about the last time you felt afraid. Was it a fear of height? Did you oversleep on a weekday and fear you’d get into trouble at the office? In any case, you know what it feels like to feel fear.

But one woman doesn’t. The woman,code-named“UM”, gave her first-ever interview after years of being studied by a team of researchers. The woman is given a code name because the researchers want to protect her from anyone who would take advantage of her inability to feel afraid.

UM can’t tell you what fear is because she’s never experienced it. “I wonder what it’s like to actually be afraid of something,”she said. The formal name for the disease is Urbach-Wieth disease, which is characterized by a hoarse(粗哑的)voice, small bumps around the eyes, and calcium deposits(钙沉积的)in the brain.

In the case of UM, the disease has transformed the part of her brain that controls the human response to fear. In the interview, UM talks about an event in her life where she was held at knifepoint and gunpoint, “I was walking to the store, and I saw a man on a park bench. He said. ‘Come here, please,’ so I went over to him. He grabbed me by the shirt, put a knife to my throat and told me he was going to cut me. I told him, ‘Go ahead and cut me, ’I wasn’t afraid at a11. And for some reason,he let me go.”

Doctors who have been studying UM’s condition for years have been trying different things that could strike fear into her. They finally figured something out—increasing UM’s carbon dioxide levels. Extra carbon dioxide concentration in the blood is known to cause fear and panic in health individuals. Increasing UM’s carbon dioxide levels did manage to give her a fright.

    (   ) 40. The text starts by_______.

    A. challenging the reader             B. solving daily problems

    C. listing situations            D. giving explanations

    B. To respect her privacy.

    C. To meet the researchers’ demands.

    D. To make her safety.

(   ) 42. From UM’s case, we can know that Urbach-Wieth disease may________.

    A. stop the brain from functioning normally

    B. lead to a decrease in calcium deposits

    C. stop the brain from responding quickly

    D. lead to an increase in carbon dioxide

(   ) 43. What will probably happen to UM?

    A. Dying of the Urbach-Wieth disease.      B. Getting the sense of panic.

    C. Experiencing another danger.           D. Speaking with a hoarse voice.

Believe it or not, there’re always some people who like staying up too late. However, sleeping early can bring us many benefits.

    1. Healthy heart. Staying up late in the night is a way to hurt your body with high blood pressure and cholesterol (胆固醇). These are the risks associated with the heart.

    2. Reduce stress. A peaceful sleep in the night relieves(减缓) physical and mental stress. It relaxes the body and mind. With insufficient sleep you’re risking your health with heart attacks and other diseases.

    3. Improve memory. Sleeping early lets your mind arrange the thoughts well. Waking up early with a fresh mind will regain all of it.

    4. Protect you from diseases. By sleeping late in the night you’re only stressing yourself, which will increase the blood pressure and cholesterol levels. So sleep early and let your body keep the pressure levels constant.

    5.                        . Breakfast is very important to start the day. Most of the time as we wake up late we miss it.

    6. Positive performance. Sleeping continuously for at least 7 hours in the night is necessary. Inadequate sleep will limit your ability to think creatively, handle stress and concentrate.

    7. Help metabolism (新陈代谢). Our body needs to send away all the unwanted waste. Sleeping through the day till noon will disorganise the exile (排泄). We need to eat and sleep on time to keep energy.

    8. Reduce the risk of cancer. Sleep in the dark. Light in the night reduces the melatonin (褪黑激素) level which’s supposed to cause sleep and prevent the risk of cancer.

    9. Increase energy. Sleeping early will let you complete your 7 hours of sleep and make you fresh the next morning. It gives you the energy to perform better.

    10. Keep weight. When you sleep too late your organism is disturbed. Sleeping for less than 7 hours a day is an invitation to being overweight.

(   ) 44. What kind of sleep can relieve the physical and mental stress?

    A. A peaceful sleep.       B. An insufficient sleep.

         C. A continuous sleep.      D. An inadequate sleep.

(   ) 45. What should be filled in the blank in Paragraph 6?

        A. Breakfast is important     B. You might miss breakfast

        C. Wait for breakfast      D. Give time for breakfast

(   ) 46. How many hours should a man sleep at least according to the text?

        A. 9 hours.    B. 8 hours.         C. 7 hours.    D. 6 hours.

(   ) 47. What will happen if you sleep less than seven hours?

        A. Losing weight.           B. Becoming sleepless.

        C. Becoming active       D. Becoming fat.

    D

Dolphins(海豚) live in a dark underwater world. It’s often impossible to see each other or anything else around them, so sound plays an important role in their survival. To communicate with each other, dolphins produce all kinds of sounds.

Only other dolphins understand what the sounds mean. Scientists haven’t uncovered their secret communication, except for one kind of whistle. It might last less than a second, but this whistle is a big deal. Why? Because these whistles are actually names of dolphins —and every dolphin has one. Scientists call these sounds a “signature whistle.” When other dolphins hear the whistle, they know which dolphin is calling.

Dolphins often hunt by themselves but still need to stay connected to the group. Since they can’t always see each other, dolphins use their signature whistles to check in with other dolphins hundreds of yards away. “In coastal areas, dolphins exchange whistles even when they’re a third of a mile apart,” says Greg Campbell, who studies animals. That means dolphins shout out to group members that might be nearly five football fields away.

What’s amazing is who names the baby dolphin. Not the mother. Not an auntie dolphin or another group member. Scientists believe the baby dolphin itself comes up with the signature whistle. Like human babies, a baby dolphin plays with sounds throughout its first year. While testing its sound skills, a baby dolphin is doing something amazing. It’s creating or figuring out its signature whistle. How or why it chooses its signature whistle is not clear. Studies show that most of the time the signature whistle is nothing like its mother’s or group members’ whistles.

When the baby dolphin is about a year old, its signature whistle is set. It repeats it of ten so the other dolphins learn to recognize it.

Deciphering(破译) dolphin names is just the beginning of figuring out what dolphins communicate about. Do they chat about sharks? Discuss the tides? Maybe they even have a name for people. Someday scientists to decipher the rest of dolphins’ communication.

What separates me from everyone else? The difference is not what clothes I wear or the music I listen to, but what I feel inside.

Ever since I was young, I have loved professional wrestling(摔跤). I woke up every Saturday to watch my favorite "Superstars." As I grew older, I got a lot of flak for watching this "fake" sport. My peers would laugh at me for following what was called a "man's soap opera." So, I put my love for wrestling on the shelf. Like everyone else, I wanted to be associated with the cool clique. I yearned to be invited to the parties of the in-crowd and hang out with the popular kids. I became pretty successful. Although my Friday evenings were busy with parties, I would still wake up early Saturdays to watch wrestling. It wasn't until freshman year that I realized I wasn't being myself.

That year, I tried many new things and activities and made new friends. In my town, football was the sport, so I decided to play football, thinking it might give me a head start in popularity. The team started with 48 athletes. At the end, there were 14 of us left. I stuck it out not because I liked it, but because I am not a quitter. That long season taught me a lesson: I wasn't a football player. More importantly, it taught me to be myself.

After that season, I went back to being a wrestling fan. I watched it religiously, no matter what insults were thrown my way. I came across a quote: "Don't Dream It. Be It." When I read this, my friend Dan had the same idea I had.

"What if we build a wrestling ring?" we asked. We acquired the necessary wood and equipment for its construction. The following weekend, we met at his house. We saw our dream in a pile in his backyard. We worked from dawn to dusk to build our great establishment. By Sunday night, our mission was complete. Our hard work (combined with a little creativity) had paid off. We had a real ring. We decided to hold an "event." We practiced for hours, trying to improve every aspect of our wrestling ability. The date was May 24th. Our show had a start time of 9: 00 p.m. To our surprise, about one hundred family, friends and fans showed up to support us. It was the most important night of my life and a complete success. Since that time, we have held five shows with as many as two hundred and fifty people turning out. We continue to live this dream. We accomplished what we set out to do. We are now well known throughout school. When I walk down the halls, I am respected by my peers. Some are the same peers who ridiculed me for watching wrestling when I was younger. When they approach me, they often say, "Good match, Chris." I humbly say, "Thank you," knowing I did something I believed in.

As my senior year winds down, I'll remember all of my high school memories. But what will stick out most is the memory that I did something I loved, despite what everyone said or thought. I accomplished my goal ... I lived my dream.
