Icehouse and ice ticket
As early as Pre-Qin Dynasty, people used natural ice to keep food fresh and make cold drinks. The Zhou royal court had a specialized department called “ice administration”. They collected natural ice blocks each December to store in the icehouse. During the Qing Dynasty, “ice tickets” were used and they were available only to officials and the rich.
Ice container
The most commonly used cooling tool is called “Jian”, which is a big container filled with ice. It was made of clay in early Chinese history, and was later made of copper (铜). The “Jian” can be seen as an ancient refrigerator, which can be used to make cold drinks.
Hiding food in the well
During the Qin and Han dynasties, for common people, the most common way to cool off is by using their wells. Some families put a pot in the well as a cold closet, or put food in a basket and lowered the basket into the well with a rope.
Herbal drinks
During the Qing Dynasty, taking Chinese herbal medicine was popular in Beijing. In hot summer, some people preferred to drink ice water, some boiled perilla leaves, and liquorice as summer soup to keep off the heat. Ancient people also loved to make lotus seed soup in summer for the benefit of strengthening the body.
21. What does “Jian” have the same function as?
A. Container. B. Refrigerator.
C. Clay. D. Copper.
22. Which of the following is unavailable to common people?
A. Ice tickets. B. Ice container.
C. Hiding food in the well. D. Herbal drinks.

Most heroes are not super. They don’t appear in comic books, on television, or in movies. They just do what they believe needs to be done to make their world a better place. Bike Batman is one of them.
Bike Batman is a 30-year-old married engineer who lives in Seattle, Washington. He’s a cyclist who also buys and sells bikes as a hobby.
About three years ago, he was looking for a bike for his wife. He found one on Craigslist, a website where people list things they want to sell. As he often does, he also looked at Bike Index, a popular website that allows users to register their bikes and post reports when they’re taken. The bike, which he was considering purchasing, clearly matched one reported stolen on Bike Index. Then he called the person who claimed to be the bike’s owner and arranged to meet him- supposedly to complete the sale. When the two men met, Bike Batman told the thief, “You’ve got two options. You can wait until a police officer gets here, or you can just get out of here.” You can imagine what the thief did.
After that first success, Bike Batman developed a safer routine. When he sees questionable bike ads on Craigslist, he cross-references the image with bikes reported on Bike Index. Once he has confirmed it with the owner, he arranges a meet-up with the thief and will call the Seattle police department so that officers can participate in the action. In more than half of the 22 cases in which he has got back and returned bikes, the thieves have been arrested. In one case, Bike Batman even helped a family recover a wide range of prized possessions that suspects had stolen during a home burglary.
His nickname came from a discussion with a police officer who suggested he be called “Robin Hood”. Since he wasn’t exactly stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, “Batman” seemed a better fit. The idea of a superhero punishing criminals feels pretty silly to him, but the main reason he continues his work is to keep up Seattle’s reputation as a friendly city.
24. What can we know about Bike Batman?
A. Bike Batman is a website manager.
B. Bike Batman is a Seattle citizen.
C. Bike Batman is a police officer.
D. Bike Batman is a superhero.
25. When Bike Batman discovers a questionable bike, he will first_____________
A. arrange to meet the thief
B. call the police department
C. look up the bike’s information
D. contact the owner of the stolen bike
26. Why did Bike Batman helped find the lost bikes after that first success?
A. He wanted to become famous.
B. He hoped to help poor people.
C. He just wanted to punish bike thieves.
D. He was eager to build a friendly city.
27. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Bike Batman began his good deeds by accident.
B. The police failed to perform their duties.
C. The thieves refused to return the bikes.
D. Bike Batman felt relieved to see the thieves arrested.
C
A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?
If you answered 10 cents, you’re not alone—most people give the same answer (the correct answer is 5 cents). It’s an example of how we often rely on intuitive(直觉的) responses—answers we feel are true. People give answers that “pop into their mind”,says Steven Sloman. We don’t spend much time “reflecting and checking whether the answer is right or wrong.”
The bat and ball question helps explain why we often believe in fake(假的) news. It is part of human nature to believe, says Sloman. But “the trick with fake news is to know to verify”—in other words, to stop and question what you know. In one experiment, Sloman and a colleague invented a discovery called helium rain. They told a group of volunteers about it, but admitted they could not fully explain what it was. They then asked the volunteers to rate their own understanding of helium rain. Most volunteers rated themselves 1 out of 7, meaning they did not understand the concept.
The researchers then told another group of volunteers about the discovery. This time, they said that scientists could fully explain how it works. When asked to rate their understanding, the volunteers gave an average answer of 2. The scientists’ confidence gave the volunteers an increased sense of their own understanding, Sloman says.
According to Sloman, studies show that knowledge spreads like a contagion(传染病). This idea can be seen in many fields, including politics. “If everyone around you is saying they understand why a politician is dishonest,” Sloman says, “then you’re going to start thinking that you understand, too.”
Another explanation for the spread of fake news is “motivated reasoning,” writes Adam Wyatz, an American management professor. “We are naturally more likely to believe things that confirm our existing opinions.”
So, in a world where misleading information is common, training people to care about factchecking is important, especially in online communities. “We should check things and not just take them at face value,” Sloman says. “Verify before you believe.”
28.What’s the purpose of using the example of the bat and ball question in the first paragraph?
A. To demonstrate that people tend to rush to a conclusion.
B.To show that there are various answers to a question.
C.To stimulate people’s interest in playing guessing games.
D.To warn that people are poor at calculating skills in their daily life.
29. What does the underlined word “verify” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.To follow your intuitive sense.
B.To confirm something is true.
C.To consider something seriously.
D.To speak out the understanding about something
30.In which situation do more volunteers claim to understand helium rain?
A.When some experts explained it to them.
B.When they believed that scientists understood it.
C.When they have more confidence in themselves.
D.When Sloman and his colleagues showed them how it works.
31.Which of the following is an example of “motivated reasoning”?
A.You think a university professor dishonest when everybody around you say so.
B.You post a message online that gives your personal opinion about a news story.
C.You search online for more information about a doubtful story on social media.
D.You believe a damaging story about someone who you always judge negatively.
D
Scientists have developed a new type of smart bandage that can signal the type of bacterial infection it’s protecting, just like a traffic light, as well as release the right type of drugs on demand. The traffic light system works just like this: Green means no bacteria or a low concentration of bacteria, yellow means drug-sensitive (DS) bacteria responsive to standard antibiotics (抗生素) and causes antibiotic release, and red means drug-resistant (DR) bacteria that need extra help to be wiped out.
In testing the bandage on mice, the research team was able to successfully treat both DS and DR infections using the new method. However, the common methods of sensing resistance are limited by time, the requirement for professional personnel, and expensive instruments. Moreover, the abuse of antibiotics causes the accelerated process of bacterial resistance.
It’s easy to see how a simple bandage and light could overcome some of these limitations. Treatment doesn’t have to wait for a doctor to make a diagnosis, and the bandage can get the right sort of drugs applied at the earliest opportunity. What’s more, the person wearing the bandage gets real-time feedback on what’s happening with the infection, if there’s an infection at all. The researchers say it offers numerous benefits over existing treatments that make use of light, including photodynamic therapy or PDT.
We’ve been seeing quite a few upgrades to the traditional bandage in recent years, thanks to advances in science — like the nanofiber mesh that attracts bacteria and draws some of it out, speeding up the healing process. Then there’s the novel bandage for treating burns, which stops bacteria from multiplying and lowers the risk of infection.
The more work that a bandage can do while it’s protecting a wound, the better. Efforts to improve bandages continue and now we've got a bandage that not only releases antibiotics, but also tells the patient exactly what’s going on too.
32. What is the smart bandage mainly designed to do?
A. Avoid the use of antibiotics. B. Clear out harmful bacteria.
C. Detect bacterial infections. D. Increase treatment options.
33. What is the advantage of the smart bandage?
A. It saves much time and cost.
B. It removes the risk of infection.
C. It prevents the bacterial resistance.
D. It improves doctor-patient relationship.
34. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Traditional bandages are out of use now.
B. More smart bandages will be developed.
C. Progress in science calls for more research.
D. People are urged to study medical science.
35. What does the text focus on?
A. A successful test on mice. B. A colour-changing bandage.
C. Sensing drug-resistant bacteria. D. Preventing abuse of antibiotics

Be a Lifelong Reader
Hello, everyone! I am Li Hua, an enthusiastic reader.
It is a great shame that students nowadays have so little time for leisure reading as most of them are burdened with huge academic pressure, which invariably leads to their narrow scope of reading as well as highly restricted reading time.
As a devoted book lover, however busy I am, I will squeeze at least 15 minutes to read. Through reading, I am transported back to different dynasties and countries, enjoying a totally different lifestyle and meeting people I would never make acquaintance with in real life. Besides, reading provides me a safe harbor where I can escape from worries in real life and get recharged immediately.
Therefore, I would like to inspire every one of you to join me in pursuing the habit of lifelong reading, which I believe will benefit you on all fronts.
That's all. Thank you.
