Beijing Opera,  also called Peking Opera,  is our national opera.  It came into being (形成) after 1790 and has a history of over 200 years.  Its music and singing came from Xipi and Erhuang in Anhui and Hubei.  The Guangxu Emperor (帝王) and Empress Dowager Cixi were crazy about Beijing Opera and helped develop the art form.

There are four main roles in Beijing Opera:  Sheng,  Dan,  Jing,  Chou.  Sheng is the leading male (男性) actor.  For example,  a Wusheng is a soldier or fighter.  A Xiaosheng is a young man.  A Laosheng is an old man with beard (胡子).  Dan is the female (女性) role.  Jing,  mostly male,  is the face-painted role and Chou is the comedy (喜剧) actor or clown (小丑).

Beijing Opera is full of famous stories,  beautiful facial paintings,  wonderful gestures and fighting.  Some of the stories are from history books,  but most are from famous novels.  The people in the stories usually can’t agree with each other.  They become angry,  unhappy,  sad and lonely.  Sometimes they are afraid and worried.  Then they find a way to make peace with (与……讲和) each other.  Everyone is usually happy in the end.

Beijing Opera is an important part of Chinese culture.  In China,  it used to be popular with old people while young people didn’t like it very much.  However,  more young people are becoming interested in it nowadays.  And more people around the world are learning about Beijing Opera’s special singing,  acting and facial paintings.

Let’s take a close look at the real-life history behind the movie.  Changjin Lake is in Korea.  The Battle(战役)of Changjin Lake was in a very cold winter with temperatures(气温)of around -40°C. In the 1950s,  our Chinese soldiers had to face life-and-death problems when they got on the train to enter the DPRK.  A US enemy plane bombed(轰炸)the trains,  and the soldiers had to quickly moved into the mountains and forests to hide.  I still deeply remember a picture in the movie.  In order not to expose the target(暴露目标),  they stayed in the ice and snow without any moving.  Although the follow-up troops(后续部队)killed the enemy and won the battle,  unluckily,  125 soldiers were frozen(冻)to death.  This is a movie about war and people.  Many can’t help crying after watching this movie,  because our Chinese soldiers used their lives to guard(保卫)the country and the people.

It is the loveliest persons who guarded China’s great rivers and mountains.  However,  many of them never have the chance to see the beautiful mountains and rivers again.  The movie Changjin Lake wants to tell today’s young people: though we live in an age without war,  we should never forget the true heroes in the history and we need to pass on their great spirit!
