When Cathleen Gardiner’s twins were born 17 years ago, doctors told her that they were a pair in a million. One had Down syndrome(低能综合症), while the other did not. Here, Cathleen tells their touching story.
Since Sean was born 17 years ago, I have always thought that he is just as wonderful as his brother and sister. Though he had a disability(残疾), we have never viewed him as a burden. He has always been a blessing. The doctors explained that though they were twins, they came from two different eggs. Lisa could walk at 11 months old, while Sean didn’t take his first steps till he w as three. By two, Lisa was talking a lot, but Sean wasn’t able to speak until he was nearly four.
For the first five years of his life, Sean needed a great deal of care. Looking after him was my full-time job, though I also worked as a technical adviser in a computing company. We never treated them differently. We gave them the same toys and spoke to them in the same way. We encouraged Sean to keep up with Lisa, even though he never could, and we would help him develop his abilities. We sent them to the same primary school even after doctors advised us that Sean should go to a school for the disabled.
We had to explain to Lisa that he wouldn’t learn as quickly as she would. She told us that she’d help him with his school work. Having a non-disabled twin has really helped Sean develop. The love they share has given him a great deal of support. Now Sean and Lisa are both about to finish high school. I don’t think he would have done nearly as well today without Lisa’s help.

Antarctica remained largely untouched by humans for thousands of years, allowing an ecosystem to develop independently. However, since the 1990s, the last wild land on the planet is becoming an increasingly popular destination for adventure-seeking tourists. Now, a study newly conducted shows the visitors may be leaving behind harmful bacteria which could destroy that area’s bird population.
We mainly hear about zoonoses(动物传染病)— diseases like Ebola and pig flu — that are spread from animals to humans, yet humans can also infect animals with illnesses such as the flu. Researchers, however, believed that Antarctic animals, which had no recorded reverse(反向的)cases of zoonoses, were not affected by the danger due to the extreme environment. But microbiologists Marta Cerda-Cuellar at the Research Center for Animal Health, was not convinced this was true.
So she and some colleagues decided to examine waste samples from Antarctic birds for evidence of human bacteria. To ensure the waste was not polluted, the scientists had to collect it from the birds themselves. This was no easy task. It took the scientists four years to collect waste samples of 666 adult birds from 24 local species. However, it was well worth the effort. The results of their study showed the presence of several types of human bacteria in the bird waste.
“The bacteria, which are a common cause for infections in humans, don’t usually cause death in wild animals,” says Cerda-Cuellar. “However, the pathogens(病原体)that arrive to highly sensitive populations could cause extinction of some populations and destroy the local ecosystem.” The researcher also fears the presence of these bacteria could foresee the arrival of other, more deadly, pathogens as the number of people visiting the area increases. While the best solution would be to prevent tourism, Cerda-Cuellar, who believes it is because of efforts from tourist and scientific groups that Antarctica remains largely protected, says that’s impossible. “While we should do as much as possible to reduce the spread, it’s hard to believe we’ll stop tourism and science at these sites, and so it is hard to believe that humans won’t continue to pass on pathogens.”
8.Which of the following will the new study support?
A.The Antarctic becomes popular with tourists.
B.The Antarctic ecosystem is destroyed by outsiders.
C.Zoonoses are spread from animals to humans.
D.Tourists expose Antarctic birds to human bacteria.
9.Why did researchers think Antarctic animals were free from human diseases?
A.The Antarctic weather is extraordinarily cold.
B.The number of tourists to the Antarctic is small.
C.There was no recorded case of reverse zoonoses.
D.An independent ecosystem was in place in Antarctica.
10.What advice might Cerda-Cuellar give?
A.Strengthen researches into Antarctic animals.
B.Stop tourism and science in Antarctica.
C.Restrict the number of visitors to Antarctica.
D.Monitor the presence of other pathogens.
11.In which section of a magazine might the text be found?
A.Health. B.Science.
C.Tourism. D.Geography.
U. S. cherries, watermelons and some other summertime favorites may depend on wild bees more than previously thought.
Many farms in the United States use managed honeybees to pollinate (授粉) crops and increase the total amount of crops, sometimes trucking beehives (蜂箱) from farm to farm. Now an analysis of seven crops across North America shows that wild bees can play a role in crop pollination too, even on conventional farms with managed honeybees. Wild volunteers add at least $1.5 billion in total to the harvest for six of the crops, a new study estimates.
“To me, the big surprise was that we found so many wild bees even in intense production areas where much of the produce in the USA is grown, says Rachael Winfree, a pollination ecologist at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N. J.
That means threats to wild bees could deplete profits even when farms raise honeybees, the researchers reported on July 29 in Proceedings of the Royal Society. Both honeybees, which aren’t native to the United States, and wild pollinators such as bumblebees face dangers including pesticides (杀虫剂).
To see what, if anything, wild native bee species contribute, researchers checked bee visits to flowers at 131 commercial farm fields across the United States and part of Canada. On the other hand, the researchers also calculated to what extent the number of bee visits limited production. These intensive farms with plenty of fertilizer, water and other resources often showed signs of reaching a pollinator limit, meaning fields didn’t have enough honeybees to get the maximum production, and volunteer wild bees were adding to the total. Then the team estimated what percentage of the production native bees were adding — versus just doing what honeybees would have done anyway.
“Wild bees don’t seem to help California’s orchards (果园),but based on orchards in Michigan and Pennsylvania, some $ 1. 06 billion of apples depends on native pollinators,” the researchers say. Watermelons, particularly in Florida, get an estimated $146 million benefit, and sweet cherries $ 145 million.
12.Why are the wild bees important to the crops according to the text?
A.It helps to pollinate and improve the crops output.
B.It is helpful to raise managed honeybees.
C.It is helpful to maintain healthy ecosystem.
D.It helps to protect native bee species.
13.What does the underlined word “deplete” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Pursue. B.Make. C.Keep. D.Reduce.
14.Why did researchers check bee visits to flowers?
A.To work out the number of wild native bees.
B.To make it clear why fields don’t have enough bees.
C.To show how important the managed bees are to intensive farms.
D.To figure out what wild native bees benefit farm output.
15.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To draw people’s attention to farm output.
B.To discuss why bees can increase the harvest.
C.To show wild bees may contribute to the crop harvest.
D.To introduce how honey bees and wild bees pollinate crops.

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping(哭泣)sorrowfully(悲伤地)when she thought of the scolding(责骂)from her mother. Having wandered(游荡)aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand (货摊)for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh(叹气)and had to leave. The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?” “Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me,” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man “Come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. “What is it?” asked the man kindly. “Nothing. Actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped(擦拭)her tears.“Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless(无情的)compared to a stranger!” Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude(感激)to her?” Jenny sat there, speechless and numb(麻木的)with shock; she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered(变形) hands. “Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted(感激的). Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?” On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

46. English and Me
It is well-known that English is one of the most widely used languages in the world. Since I was young, I have been interested in this international language with which I would be able to communicate with people all over the world. Learning English takes time, so if we want to learn it well, we are supposed to devote much time to practicing using it every day. Besides, keep it in mind that it is of importance to go over what is learnt regularly. Through hard work, I not only get good grades in my study, but also can communicate in English fluently. Therefore, I believe that we can learn English well as long as we work hard.

Where could my mother be? She wondered. Was she still angry with me? Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
Paragraph 2
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother's arms. “Mum, I'm so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.”She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled, patting her back gently.
