The COVID-19 pandemic is causing worldwide concern for elementary and secondary school students’ mental condition. The following are some possible activities that can be carried out to help them and also create a safe and healthy school environment.
    John’s and Mary’s thoughts
Students are presented with a picture which says that John and Mary have different thoughts after they have heard of the coronavirus (冠状病毒). Then students are invited to guess and write the characters’ thoughts on the picture. This activity uses a “projective” method, as students are not asked what their feelings are, but instead, they project their feelings onto the characters.
    When I’m worried
After talking about what the characters may think, students can now turn their attention to themselves. They are asked to list their common worries, but most importantly, they are directed to think about some response measures and the helpful relationships they can rely on. This is a vital exercise, for it shifts students’ focus from their worries to the coping strategies.
    Seeking a balance
Students are asked to provide three key recommendations to prevent infection. Teachers can pick out the positive behavior and correct any incorrect suggestions. It’s also important to strike a balance between the recommended healthy behavior and the concept that microorganisms are a natural part of the environment and that many of them play a key role in sustaining human life.
Videos to know and understand viruses
It is advisable to plan science lessons on microorganisms. Students can know more about the pandemic by studying microbial (微生物的) life, and thus they can understand what viruses are and how they spread. But be careful not to bring anxiety—avoid talking about scary messages.
21.Which activity helps students express their feelings indirectly?
    A.Seeking a balance. B.John’s and Mary’s thoughts.
C.When I’m worried. D.Videos to know and understand viruses.
22.Why is the second activity important to reduce students’ worries?
    A.It puts students at ease.
B.It enables students to share experiences.
C.It directs students’ attention to the solutions.
D.It helps students to establish good relationships.
23.What can students learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.The concept of science. B.Suggestions to prevent infection.
C.Knowledge about microorganisms. D.Positive behavior to stay healthy.
    B
Drivers slowed down to admire what I was doing. “Good work, love,” one man yelled out. It was the start of the state’s first lockdown and I used my spare time to paint murals (壁画).
I’d chosen sunflowers as my subject. “They’re bright, colorful but best of all, they turn their face to the sun,” I told people. It was a fitting reminder that as much of the world faced uncertainty over this pandemic we mustn’t give up hope, either. And my colorful creations soon started turning heads.
“I want one,” people told me, inviting me to their local laneway. Several business owners also got in touch hoping I could revive their property.
I paid for all the paints myself but soon I started finding bunches of sunflowers with thank you notes from complete strangers on my doorstep. Honestly, making money was never my intention. I just wanted to bring the community together.
Soon, people from across the city were hanging out in my suburb wanting selfies(自拍) with the sunflowers. Before long, I attracted some die-hard fans.
One of my most moving experiences was when I was approached by friends of a woman whose son had recently passed away.“Would you paint her a mural as a surprise?” they asked. For me, there was no question. And when the woman returned to see the transformation outside her home, she was moved to tears. “It’s the most beautiful thing,” she choked.
People from all over my country have since contacted me wanting my work, and while I’d love to add more sunflowers across the country, it’s great to know that I found a way of brightening up my town in the dark times.
24.What is the purpose of what the author has done?
    A.To catch eyeballs.
    B.To promote business.
    C.To make selfies popular.
    D.To unit the whole community.
25.The most probable reason why people go to the suburb is that _________.
A.they want to go on an outing
    B.they love the author’s creativity
C.they want to pick some sunflowers
D.they can escape from the lockdown
26.How did the woman feel seeing the murals outside her home?
    A.Terrified. B.Touched. C.Excited. D.Annoyed.
27.What can we conclude from the passage?
A.Art originates from our daily life.
B.The author is a professional artist.
C.Artistic works light up people’s life.
D.The pandemic has affected people’s life.
    C
Western monarch butterflies (WMBs, 西部帝王蝶) fly thousands of miles every year, flying north in spring and summer, and south in fall. Now, scientists want people in the western US to give them a hand by sending in any pictures of monarchs they take this spring.
WMBs, like most butterflies, help plants create seeds, which can then create more plants by spreading a dust called pollen between plants. In turn, monarchs depend on plants. They gather sweet nectar (花蜜) from flowers for food. They rest and spend their winters in trees. And they depend completely on a plant called milkweed to lay their eggs.
Their number has been dropping sharply since the 1980s, when 3 million to 10 million butterflies migrated (迁徙) annually from the northwestern United States to spend the winter at hundreds of sites along the California coast. In 2020, less than 2. 000 monarchs were counted in the entire state. But in 2021, that number jumped to 247, 237. Scientists still don't fully understand this phenomenon. But they’re studying it, saying itll take years of tracking them to work it out.
Scientists have learned a lot about where Western monarchs spend the winters. But they know much less about where they go when they leave their winter homes. That’s why scientists from several universities are organizing a project called “Western Monarch Mystery Challenge” to seek for practical assistance from “citizen scientists” in the American west.
They’re asking anyone who sees a monarch butterfly outside of their winter homes this spring to take a picture and send it to them. By collecting the pictures, along with the date and place where the pictures were taken, scientists hope to learn more about what happens to the butterflies and where they are after they leave their winter homes and protect them better in the future.
Last year’s increase in monarch number is great news. But the number of monarchs is still way below the millions of butterflies that migrated in the 1980s.
28.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about concerning WMBs?
A.The links between them and plants. B.Their vital importance to plants.
C.The effects of plants on them. D.Their contributions to nature.
29.What best describes scientists when they knew about WMBs’ population jump?
    A.Worried. B.Doubtful.
    C.Puzzled. D.Tolerant.
30.What do scientists intend to know about WMBs by the project?
A.What their real shapes look like. B.Why their number increases.
C.How they leave winter homes. D.Where they live in spring.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.WMBs Are Being Protected B.Help Is Needed to Help WMBs
C.WMBs Are Still in Danger D.Humans Welcomes WMBs Back
    D
Did you notice any changes in your personal sleep patterns(模式)in the days before the full moon?
A new research suggested that a full moon can affect human sleep cycles. The research led by biology professor Horacio Iglesia of Washington University confirmed that the nights leading up to a full moon have more natural light available after the sun goes down. As a result, in the days before a full moon, people go to sleep later in the evening and sleep for shorter periods of time.
Researchers measured the sleep patterns of test participants as the moon ran through at least one whole 29.5-day cycle. On average, the participants slept about 52 minutes less on nights before a full moon. They also went to bed about 30 minutes later. People had the shortest amount of sleep during the nights three to five days before a full moon.
"I was one of the participants. When I looked back on my own data, I could not believe how much my sleep changed." Iglesia said, "The study provided clear evidence that a person's sleep-wake cycle goes with the changes of the moon."
The research also included the effect that access(接通) to electricity has on seep. The study involved 98 individuals living in three different communities(社区)in Argentina. Each community had different access to electricity. One rural community had no electricity access, while a second had only limited access. A third community had full access to electricity. In addition to the indigenous(土著的) communities, the researchers also examined sleep data on 464 college students in Washington and the same moon cycle patterns were discovered. "Although the effect is more obvious in communities without access to electricity, the effect still exists in communities with electricity," Iglesia said.
The scientists say further research is needed to help explain other possible causes for the changes in sleep patterns in the test participants, such as biological differences in individuals or social patterns within communities.
32.The underlined phrase "leading up to" in the second paragraph means________.
    A.causing B.following C.before D.after
33.How did Iglesia feel when he saw the result of his research?
    A.Excited. B.Surprised C.Depressed D.Frightened
34.Which of the following does NOT affect sleep pattern according to the research?
A.Weather. B.Access to electricity. C.Natural light. D.Changes of the moon.
35.What do the scientists think of this research?
A.It is believable. B.It involved too few participants.
C.It is of no use. D.It isn't totally reliable yet.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It’s hard to say why, but it’s just true: music is good for you. It can calm your spirit and help you vent (发泄) your anger. ___36___ But there’s one surprising yet well-documented effect that has really surprised us. Music lessons are very good for language comprehension -- and they might even be better than reading lessons.
___37___ But in this new study from MIT(Massachusetts Institute of Technology), researchers were able to see music lessons improve word comprehension right before their eyes. Led by Robert Desimone, the director of MIT’s McGovern Institute for Brain Research, the team tested 74 children between the ages of four and five to see how their growing language skills were affected by piano lessons.
The 74 participants were divided into three groups. ___38___ The other two had their weekly academic lessons supplemented with three 45-minute lessons per week -- the first got piano lessons and the second took part in reading lessons.
The results? The ones who received a little extra learning every week outperformed those who just continued on with their normal studies. ___39___ Perhaps even more surprisingly, the children who took the music lessons even outperformed the ones who took the reading lessons when it came to telling the difference between two words that were very similar.
“That’s a big thing for kids in learning language: being able to hear the differences between words,” Desimone said in a statement. “They really benefited from that.” To the researchers, the results point to one clear conclusion: ___40___
A.It can even be used to improve your memory.
B.It can bring people together and give us hope.
C.So students should have music lessons more often.
D.The control group simply carried on with their normal school classes.
E.Many studies have shown a close link between musical training and language skills.
F.If you’re a school administrator who wants kids to succeed, you’d better not cut those music programs.
G.Even the ones who only took music lessons turned out to perform better on language puzzles than those who didn’t have extra lessons.
