展开阅读理解
I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don’t remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing mom say, “I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said, “The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests. Occasionally, I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn’t enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts, things that are concrete. I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Yet, now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex, I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don’t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax.
We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is a vital part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.

This new packaging material looks like conventional plastic, but it’s actually made from fish waste and algae(海藻)—unlike plastic, if it escapes into the ocean, a fish could eat it safely. The material, called MarinaTex, is the winner of this year’s James Dyson Award.
“It began with my desire to work with waste,” says Lucy Hughes, a recent graduate from University of Sussex, who once visited a fish processing factory to see the massive quantity of waste generated by the industry and found new ways to use it. She focused on fish skins and scales(鳞片). “When I had it in my hands, I realized this has got potential,” she says. “It s super strong and flexible.” Hughes spent months experimenting with fish waste in her kitchen, running more than 100 experiments to find a binder(粘合剂) and a process that could hold together the proteins in the fish skins and scales.“I had a lot of failed attempts. A lot of things either were too easily broken or too soft or easily went bad,” she says. She finally found a type of algae that can be locally got.
The material can be used to replace oil-based plastic in packaging such as bags or the half-transparent windows used to show products in boxes. As her research continues, Hughes says that she’ll be studying how MarinaTex works and how long it could be used to store food.
Unlike some “composable” plastics, which need to be processed in an industrial composting(堆肥) facility to break down, the new material can break down in four to six weeks in a backyard compost bin. “All the ingredients are food-grade safe,” Hughes says. “So, this breaks down much like a piece of food would break down.

You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim or creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. “They” did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering. “They” are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as “they” are around. Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, thus internalizing (内化) your victimization (受害). The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.
Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are individuals who might like to control their lives, but they don’t let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don’t blame themselves when they fail. Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each sacred (神圣的) moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth.
Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart. Victims relish (沉溺) in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others—and even themselves—to feel like victims, too. Creators consciously choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but all around them. Both victims and creators always have choice to determine the direction of their lives.
In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime. Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the grief, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life.
In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have a fuller, richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.
12.In what way is a creator different from a victim?
A.A creator is given more challenges.
B.Failure seldom comes to a creator.
C.Storms are beneficial in a creator’s eyes.
D.A victim hardly blames others for their own faults.
13.When people choose to think like a creator, what will happen?
A.They seldom make careless mistakes.
B.The world seems a cold and difficult place.
C.Life is blessed with fewer opportunities than expected.
D.They don’t care what happens to them but think positively.
14.Which of the following can be described as a creator’s act?
A.Tim failed his exam and thought he would never pass it.
B.Sam lost his job and abandoned himself to drinking for months.
C.J. K. Rowling was rejected by a publisher and yet went on writing.
D.Jessica broke up with her husband and chose to give up her own life.
15.Which of the following can be the best title for this text?
A.Benefits Of Being A Creator B.Creators: Act Now Or Never
C.Creator Or Victim: Up To You D.Ways To Transform A Victim Into A Creator
The best way to see the world’s architectural wonders is to visit them in person, so grab your passport and book a trip to one of these amazing destinations if you have a longing for a spot of building-based bliss (极乐) this year.
Barcelona
Every year millions of people flood to this vibrant (充满活力的) Spanish city to see some of the amazingly unique works of the famous architect Antoni Gaudi. The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia is the most popular of these and is still being built, in spite of the fact that work began all the way back in 1882.
Monaco
While ultramodern architecture tends to grab all of the headlines, if you are looking for a more traditional type of design that speaks to the wealth of bygone (过去的) eras, Monaco is definitely worth adding to your list. Monte Carlo is undoubtedly the best place to visit if you want to be bathed in the beauty of the coastline it shares with the French Riviera while also seeing some of the most gorgeous hotels that Europe has to offer.
Athens
A lot of ancient architecture stands in the Greek capital, with buildings that have stood for thousands of years still managing to tower over the tourists that visit them. From the impressive, awe-inspiring relics of the Parthenon to temples to various gods including Zeus and Hephaestus, Athens is the place to visit if you are eager to see architecture that is filled with history.
Singapore
In contrast to Monte Carlo, the architecture of Singapore is cutting edge and futuristic, to the point that visitors may feel like they have stepped onto the setting of a science fiction film rather than a living, breathing city. The Helix Bridge is a must-see architectural attraction of Singapore, with its 280-metre-span stretching in an arcing curve and consisting of intertwined (缠绕的) metal strands (金属链) that bring the structure of DNA into mind.

I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water(停滞不前), just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didn’t think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.
I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.
It takes confidence to make a new start—there’s a dark period in-between where you’re neither one thing nor the other. You’re out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you’re too ashamed to say, “Well, I’m writing a novel, but I’m not quite sure if I’m going to get there.” My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.
Then I met an agent(代理商) who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.
The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal—that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.
It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck—of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there’s no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract(合同) of the publisher—to be a published writer—is unbelievably rewarding.

A.Tough but rewarding. B.Interesting and smooth.
C.Difficult but thrilling. D.Complicated and fruitless.
Scientists have discovered the world’s largest known field of sea grass. They did it using videos shot by some unusual helpers: tiger sharks. The work should help protect the sea grass, and also shows off a powerful way to explore the ocean.
Sea grasses are flowering plants that normally grow in shallow waters near coasts. They grow in thick fields, known as meadows(草地). Sea grass meadows help clean the ocean’s water, and provide food and shelter for many sea creatures. Sea grasses store huge amounts of carbon—the harmful pollution that’s making global warming worse. Damaging these sea grass meadows can release this pollution again,so it’s important to protect them.
From above, the meadows can be hard to spot, either because the water is too deep or not clear enough. And the ocean is so huge that it’s simply not possible to study it all by diving. So a team of scientists decided to have sharks help with the research. Tiger sharks are huge, strong, and deadly. But they also live underwater, are fast swimmers, and spend a lot of time in sea grass meadows. Between 2016 and 2020, a team of researchers attached cameras and other trackers to the fins (鳍) of seven tiger sharks. After catching the sharks, the scientists worked quickly to attach the equipment, then let them go again.
The scientists have learned that the waters around the Bahamas are home to the largest sea grass meadow ever discovered and that the world has roughly 40% more sea grass meadows than they previously thought.
The programme shows how useful large underwater animals can be in helping to learn more about life under the sea. Oliver Ship ley is a scientist at Beneath the Waves, which led the work. He says animals like tiger sharks “...are going to take us to new places that we didn’t know existed.”

A.They are sensitive to sea grasses. B.Cameras are easily fixed on them.
C.They are the most faithful sea animals. D.They spend much time in sea grass meadows.
25.What does Oliver Ship ley think of sea animals?
A.They are dangerous. B.They are adorable.
C.They are helpful. D.They are smart.

A.Many new places in the ocean need exploring.
B.Sharks help discover world’s largest sea grass meadow.
C.Scientists have found a powerful way to protect the ocean.
D.Large underwater animals contribute a lot to the ocean.
The number of fin-less porpoise, a protected species living in the Yangtze River, has seen growth compared with the 1,012 that were seen in 2017. A previous survey carried out on Oct. 25 said more mother-child pairs were seen and some were seen in places that had never reported them earlier.
Fin-less porpoise, also called Smiling Angels, have become a natural indicator of the health of the Yangtze River ecosystem, especially after the Lipotes vexillifer, a species of the freshwater dolphin commonly known as Baiji, became extinct in 2007. Despite efforts to protect the fin-less porpoise for over 40 years, its numbers continued to fall. Finally, there is some good news.
The turnaround would not have been possible without the three earlier scientific surveys and the ongoing one. Add to that a 10-yearfishing ban on the Yangtze River carried out on Jan. 1 last year, followed by the fin-less porpoise being upgraded to a level protected species on the national list on Feb. 5,2021,and the Yangtze River Protection Law coming into effect on March 1,2021.
Because of these measures, the provincial-level regions along the Yangtze River relocated their chemical plants, closed down illegal docklands, mended wetlands and adjusted sailing lanes. All these efforts ultimately improved the river’s ecological environment, helping breathe life into the fin-less porpoise species. The results show that China has chosen the right path in protecting not only the fin-less porpoise, but also the river’s ecosystem.
The story of the revival of the fin-less porpoise is only part of the bigger story of the Yangtze River’s protection as a whole. And protecting the river is part of the larger picture of the country’s ecological civilization. Fixing the Yangtze River’s ecology can benefit hundreds of generations, and a good ecology is a fortune of the Chinese nation as a whole.
27.What do we know about the Lipotes vexillifer?
A.It was extinct about 15 years ago. B.Its favourite habitat is ocean.
C.Its population is falling rapidly. D.It has been a protected species.
28.What makes the fin-less porpoise increase?
A.Ban on fishing industry forever. B.The earlier and ongoing scientific surveys.
C.Relocation of the wetlands. D.Improvement of the chemical plants.
29.What is the author’s attitude towards fixing the Yangtze River’s ecology?
A.Skeptical. B.Worried. C.Conservative. D.Positive.
30.What is the best title for the text?
A.Fin-less Porpoise—a Protected Species B.Making the “Smiling Angels” Smile Again
C.The Yangtze River—Origin of Chinese People D.Fixing the Yangtze River’s Ecology Is Urgent
Last year,Li Minhua, who is in her early 40s, began helping seniors in Beijing with her shower assistance service, with many of her clients treating Li as their own daughter. A few years ago, she noticed just how desperate her mother was for a shower after her parent was involved in an accident.“She had to lie in bed, unable to move around for six months, and I didn’t want to take any risks in giving her a shower,”she said. Li was hampered in efforts to help her mother due to a lack of special equipment and professional assistance, which prompted her to research ways to help seniors take showers.
After learning about Japanese professional shower assistance procedures and standards, Li bought two water pumps and inflatable bathtubs(浴缸) when she set up her own business in March last year. This equipment enables the elderly to lie down comfortably during a bath, as most of them are unable to stand or sit up.“The key is reducing the distance as much as possible in which those taking a shower have to move,“Li said.
The first time Li helped bathe a senior made her determined to persevere with her business.“The client was an 85-year-old man who had lost the ability to communicate,”she said. Li’s initial embarrassment gave way to a sense of achievement and pleasure after the man was bathed and scrubbed.“You could tell from his look that he was relieved and happy,”she said. The experience gave Li a new understanding of aging.“I really feel that the elderly with disabilities need care and attention from more people. They also need a decent life,”she said.
Li has recruited(招募)six members to her team, which has served more than 300 households with elderly family members who have difficulty taking a shower. About 80 percent of Li’s clients now take a shower at least once a month thanks to her service.
