At thirteen years old, I was like any other kid of my age. I liked computer games. I complained about too much homework. I wore loose pants and oversize T-shirts, the typical middle-school prison clothing. However, I can look straight into your eyes and not hear a word you’re saying. I appear to be listening while my mind is somewhere miles away.
After extensive tests, the doctor explained to my mom that I was what they called “dual exceptional”. It means that I am what they call “gifted” and yet I’m also learning disabled.
In middle school, I took Language Arts with Mrs. Smith. That day, she handed out copies of them for us to memorize and be tested on the following day. I told her that I might need to take home some reading assignments because my concentration is better when I am in a quiet setting. I went on to explain to her about my “fine motor skill” problems, which make my handwriting look like chicken scratch. I asked her if I might be able to use my word processor at home to do written assignments.
As I explained all this to Mrs. Smith, she said, “It’s against school policy. You are no different from anyone else, young man. If I do for you, I have to do for all the others. I have treated all students the same in the thirty years I have taught here. I will not give you an unfair advantage over your peers!”
I did what any other kid would do in my situation: I stole the packet out of the classroom. That night I sat down at my word processor. My thoughts spilled out so fast that my fingers danced across the keyboard.
Mrs. Smith never looked at me as she handed my paper back facedown on my desk the next day. As my eyes focused on the white page, I found an A decorating the margin (页边空白) instead of her usual X. Underneath were her neatly red-penned words: “See what you can do when you apply yourself ?”
4. What problem does the author have?
A. He isn’t clever at any school subjects.
B. He finds his middle school to be a prison.
C. He is suffering from his physical disability.
D. He can’t pay attention while others are speaking.
5. What did the author expect of Mrs. Smith to permit him to do?
A. Do his homework at home. B. Read in a quiet environment.
C. Help him improve his handwriting. D. Take notes on a computer in class.
6. Why did Mrs.Smith turn down the author?
A. She refused to have a pet student.
B. She treated every student equally.
C. She couldn’t dare to break the school policy.
D. She had no chance to give an unfair advantage.
7. What do Mrs.Smith’s words in the last sentence suggest?
A. A warning. B. A doubt. C. A praise. D. A challenge.
C
Pre-school children who spend time together take on one another’s personalities, a new research has found. The study shows that environment plays a key role in shaping people’s personalities. While genetics still forms the central part of the human psyche (心理), the research finds that personality traits (特征) are “contagious” (传染的) among children. “ Our finding flies in the face of common assumptions that personality can’t be changed,” said Dr. Jennifer Neal, co-author of the study.
The researchers studied the personalities and social networks of two pre-school classes for a full school year. One of the classes was a set of three-year-olds, and the other a set of four-year-olds. Children whose friends were hard-working or outgoing gradually took on these personality traits over time. Psychology expert Dr. Emily Dublin said kids are having a far bigger effect on each other than people may realize.
The new study is not the first to explore the contagious effects of personality traits. A 2015 psychology study found that rudeness at work can be contagious as it travels from person to person “like a disease”. The study found that seeing a boss being rude to an employee was enough to cause people to be rude to those around them.
The researchers questioned 6,000 people on the social “climate” in their workplaces, which included offices, hotels and restaurants. They found 75 percent of those who took part said they had been treated rudely at least once in the past year. And the study also suggests that merely seeing other people being subjected to rudeness made it more likely that a person would treat their colleagues in the same way. Rudeness could include leaving someone off an invite to a company event, sending unkind emails, finding fault with others or failing to give praise.
Dr.Torkelson believes companies need to be more aware of the harm that rudeness in the workplace can do as it can damage the working environment. She said better training could help to fight against the problem.
8. According to Paragraph 2, who have the greatest impact on children’s personality?
A. Their parents. B. Their friends. C. The researchers. D. The psychologists.
9. Which of the following is considered rude at the workplace?
A. Ignoring the faults of co-workers.
B. Not sending emails to workmates.
C. Seeking praise from colleagues and bosses.
D. Not inviting a colleague to a company party.
10. What is the passage mainly about?
A. One’s personality is hard to change.
B. One’s personality is shaped by genes.
C. One’s personality traits can spread to others.
D. One’s personality traits can change overnight.
11. This passage is most probably taken from ________.
A. a science report. B. a study guide. C. a school textbook. D. a technical journal.
D
A friend of mine, in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me the question, “Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair?” Her question was a good one. It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster: life isn’t fair. It’s a disappointment, but it’s absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It’s not and it won’t be.
One of the nice things about surrendering (屈从) to the fact that life isn’t fair is that it keeps us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have. We know it’s not “life’s job” to make everything perfect, it’s our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact also keeps us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt differently; everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making decisions, and everyone has those times that they feel unfairly treated.
The fact that life isn’t fair doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything in our power to improve our own lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that we should. When we don’t recognize or admit that life isn’t fair, we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity, of course, is a self-defeating emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. When we do recognize that life isn’t fair, however, we feel enthusiastic for others and for ourselves. And enthusiasm is a heartfelt emotion that conveys loving-kindness to everyone it touches.
The next time you find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact. You may be surprised that it can make you out of self-pity and into helpful action.
12. The author thought of his friend’s question as a good one because ________.
A. like his friend, he also thought life was unfair.
B. he also wanted to know who held such an opinion.
C. it made him recall something during his childhood.
D. he learned something from the question as a youngster.
13. Surrendering to the fact that life isn’t fair will ________.
A. make us feel sorry for unfair treatment. B. make us know it’s our duty to perfect things.
C. keep us from making everything perfect. D. keep us from doing everything in our power.
14. In the last paragraph, “this very basic fact”refers to the fact that ________.
A. you should not pity for others. B. life isn’t and won’t be fair.
C. compassion is heartfelt emotion. D. pity is a self-defeating emotion.
15. According to the author, when recognizing life injustice, you may ________.
A. feel pity to other people. B. do nothing to improve our life.
C. receive enthusiasm from others. D. take measures to solve life problem.

It was Christmas Day. Pappy was working alone fixing an old lantern in the back room when he heard the ring of his bell on the shop door. The bell, which produced a uniquely pleasant sound, had been in Pappy’s family for over a hundred years. He valued it dearly and enjoyed sharing its song with all who came to his shop. Although the bell was hung on the inside of the main door, Pappy had tied a wire to the screen door so that it would ring whether the inner door was open or not. Hearing the bell, he left the back room to greet his customer.
“And how can I help you, little lady ? ” Pappy’s voice was joyful.
“Hello, sir.” The little girl spoke almost in a whisper. She looked at Pappy with her big brown eyes, and then slowly scanned the room in search of something special. Shyly she told him, “I’d like to buy a present, sir.”
“Well, let’s see,” Pappy said. “ Who is this present for ?”
“My grandpa. It’s for my grandpa. But I don’t know what to get.”
Pappy began to make suggestions.“How about a pocket watch? It’s in good condition.” The little girl didn’t answer. She had walked to the doorway and put her small hand on the door. She shook the door gently to ring the bell. Pappy’s face seemed to glow as he saw her smiling with excitement. “ This is just right,” the little girl said. “Momma says my grandpa loves music.”
Just then, Pappy’s expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl’s heart, he told her, “I’m sorry, Missy. That’s not for sale. Maybe your grandpa would like this little radio.”
The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed, “ No, I don’t think so.”
In an effort to help her understand, Pappy told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged(疏远的)daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.
