Co-authored by researchers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Texas A&M, the paper looked at nearly50 years of data testing whether facial expressions can lead people to feel the emotions related to those expressions.
“Traditional wisdom tells us that we can feel a little happier if we simply smile, or that we can get ourselves in a more serious mood if we glare, and frowning makes us feel sadder. ” said Nicholas Coles, UT Ph. D. student in social psychology and leads researcher on the paper. “But psychologists have actually disagreed about this idea for over 100 years. ” These disagreements became more pronounced in 2016, which are more evident especially when 17 teams of researchers failed to replicate(复制)a well-known experiment demonstrating that the physical act of smiling can make people feel happier.
“Some studies have not found evidence that facial expressions can influence emotional feelings, ” Coles said.
“But we can't focus on the results of any one study. Psychologists have been testing this idea since the early 1970s so we wanted to look at all the evidence. "
Using a statistical technique called meta-analysis, Coles and his team combined data from 138 studies testing more than 11, 000 participants from all around the world.
According to the results of the meta-analysis, facial expressions have a small impact on feelings. “We don't think that people can smile their way to happiness, ” Coles said. “But these findings are exciting because they provide a clue about how the mind and the body interact to shape our conscious experience of emotion. " “We still have a lot to learn about these facial feedback effects, but this meta-analysis put us a little closer to understanding how emotions work. ” Coles added.
24. Which of the following best explains “pronounced” underlined in paragraph 3?
A. Obvious.
B. Professional.
C. Extreme.
D. Heated.
25. What do words in paragraph 5 and 6 suggest?
A. All the evidence has already been found by researchers.
B. We need to use a statistical technique called meta-analysis.
C. Facial expressions have a huge influence on feelings.
D. Research should be comprehensive and in-depth.
26. Why do the results arouse excitement in researchers?
A. They encourage people to keep a positive attitude.
B. They show people can smile their way to happiness.
C. They offer a slight indication to help with the research.
D. They support the general conventional accepted belief.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Coles’ research about facial feedback effects will still continue.
B. Studies exactly proved facial expressions influence our feelings.
C. The interaction of the body and the mind leads to real happiness.
D. The meta-analysis lets us fully understand how emotions work.

Ants have the ability to find cancerous cells in humans, a new study has discovered, suggesting they could be used for cancer diagnosis in the future. Researchers from the French National Centre for Scientific Research discovered that ant species Formica fusca(丝光褐林蚁)has a well developed sense of smell. The ants can tell cancerous cells from healthy cells in humans by the sense of smell. The study shows that ants could turn out to be better than dogs when it comes to locating cancerous cells in humans. Dogs' noses are also suited for the research of cancer-specific, but training them to do so requires several months to a year.
To conduct their research, the scientists performed tests with 36 ants, smelling cells under a laboratory setting. First, they exposed the ants to the smell of a sample of cancerous human cells. This smell was associated with a reward-sugar solution. Secondly, they exposed the ants to two different cells. One was a new smell and the other was the smell of the cancerous cells. Third, they exposed the ants to different cancerous cells. Finally, the scientists found that ants can recognize cancerous and healthy cells, even two cancerous lines!
“Insects can be easily fed in controlled conditions. They have a very well-developed olfactory(嗅 觉的)system. Ants have high potential, are capable of learning very quickly, at lower cost, and are efficient, ”points out CNRS. The approach could potentially be adapted to a range of other complex smell detection tasks including drugs, explosives, spoiled food, or other diseases, including malaria, infections, and diabetes.
28. Which aspect of the ants does the research focus on?
A. Its social living style.
B. Its movement model.
C. Its detective ability.
D. Its touching function.
29. What is the significant advantage of ants compared with dogs?
A. It is cost-effective.
B. It has cancer cells.
C. It is at great expense.
D. It has a shorter lifetime.
30. What can we know from the passage?
A. Ants have the acutest sense of smell.
B. Ants leave chemical trails to find others.
C. Ants might be widely used in many aspects.
D. Ants are applied to cancer diagnosis now.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. The new-found ability of ants.
B. The smell system of dogs and ants.
C. The differences between dogs and ants.
D. The major breakthrough in cancer treatment.

At the Biennale, many realistic and moving works grabbed people's attention. These works demonstrate the progress of China's ethnic groups and show the backbone and full picture of the unified spirit that binds the country's diverse cultures.
As a spiritual home for the unity of China's 56 ethnic groups, the Biennale has demonstrated its profound significance in promoting mutual understanding and unity among different ethnic groups in the country.

1. Be noble.

If you're getting panned for something beyond your control, align yourself with the critic-you could agree, “ __37__ . It's a shame that we didn't win the tournament. I wish it had worked out better, too. ” This will get you out of the line of fire.

5. Consider that the critic might be wrong.
You can always reject criticism that does not match what your core beliefs tell you is correct. __40 __. When it's your turn to hear criticism, remember: just because someone says it, doesn't mean it's true.
A final note: let's be honest, the only way to avoid criticism is to collect those critical comments, stick them on the wall, and just keep swimming.
A. I know you're right
B. Kill them with kindness
C. Interpretation is everything
D. Seize the criticism as an opportunity
E. This can strengthen your ability
F. Don't get defensive or blame others

To mark their hard work and contribution to wildlife protection in the reserve, last year, Shi's 20-member team was recognized with a special award at an online award ceremony for the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas' International Ranger Awards.
Kathy MacKinnon, head of the commission, speaks highly of their work, saying that they are “critical to our global conservation efforts, helping to stem biodiversity loss and protect the important ecosystems that serve as natural solutions to climate change and other global challenges".
Shi realizes that through protecting endangered animals, like giant pandas and snow leopards, the rich biodiversity of the environment can also be maintained, which is a win-win situation.
After graduation from Sichuan Forestry School(now Sichuan Agricultural University) in 1992, Shi became a forest guardian at the Wolong National Nature Reserve.
Established in 1963, Wolong is the country's earliest panda reserve. It experienced serious human-animal conflict, such as illegal logging and hunting before the 1990s. In 1978, an observation tent, claimed to be the country's first field camp to study wild giant pandas, was built on a steep forested slope in the reserve.
In the early 1980s, the government cooperated with the World Wide Fund for Nature to establish the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda to save the endangered animal.
At the very beginning, it was really difficult for rangers. With no proper outdoor equipment, like protective jackets or sleeping bags, every time, going around the area could be a life-threatening adventure. Plastic woven bags were commonly used for warmth and as makeshift tents for emergency cases. For Shi, the real challenges are natural disasters, which cannot be predicted.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

He has a vivid memory of a snowslide in June 2017 during a routine inspection. “We were about to climb over a 400-meter-long mountain pass, about 5, 500 meters in altitude, which was the most dangerous place for us with snow depth on the ground reaching up to two meters and the wind blowing heavily, ” Shi says. Suddenly Shi heard thundering sounds and a mass of snow came tumbling down the mountain. Quickly throwing himself at the rock and grabbing onto it, Shi survived but was injured.
There is a lot of hard work involved in protecting wildlife, but there are also some surprises from the job. Shi has a soft spot for giant pandas. Although he has patrolled the reserve for three decades, he has only met the pandas twice. In order to record videos of the wild giant pandas in the reserve, they searched for them for several days in the forest, but didn't spot one. When they were about to give up, there was a sound from the bamboo forest behind, and they turned around and saw a fat panda about six meters away, hiding in the woods. It ran quickly. It was funny to see a group of people chasing the panda in the wild. The scene is just like hide-and-seek which will never be forgotten.

根据文章第四段中“The photos at the exhibition focus on an old herdsman in the village. The herdsman and his family have benefited from local poverty-relief policies, moving from the desert to a new town with paved roads. Escaping from a tough environment, the herdsman establishes a new life for himself and his family that blends tradition and modernity. ”可知,牧羊人的生活发生了改变,从沙漠搬到城镇,过上了新生活。由此反映出少数民族过上了现代生活。故选C。
33.B 推理判断题。根据文章第五段"The cutting hair ceremony is one of the most important and grand ceremonies on the path to adulthood among ethnic Mongolians. During the ceremony, elders send their best wishes for the future to the children taking part, while songs and speeches of praise full of traditional values reveal the rich characteristics of the ethnic group. ”看出剪发礼是蒙古族人重要且盛大的仪式,体现了长辈对孩子的关爱和美好的祝愿。故选B。
34.D 细节理解题。根据文章第四段“The herdsman and his family have benefited from local poverty-relief policies, moving from the desert to a new town with paved roads.

后文提到“Well, maybe not kill them(I know it might be tempting when they're coming at you), but express kindness and resist defensive reactions. You’ll likely see them soften. (也许不要杀了他们(我知道当他们向你走来的时候,这可能很诱人),但要表达善意,抵制防御反应。你可能会看到他们变柔和。)”故选择B。
37.A 考查考生理解篇章布局,建立段内衔接关系的能力。前文提到“If you’re getting panned for something beyond your control, align yourself with the critic-you could agree(如果你因为一些超出你控制范围的事情而受到批评,站在批评的一方-你可以同意)”,故选择A。
根据段落内容“Reacting defensively shows insecurity, plus you'll just come across as aggressive and difficult. And blaming is even worse. Resist throwing someone under the bus. (防守式的反应表明你缺乏安全感,而且你只会给人留下咄咄逼人和难以相处的印象。责备就更糟糕了。)”可知,故选择F。
39.C 考查考生理解篇章布局,建立段内衔接关系的能力。根据本段最后一句话“Avoid over-interpretation and speculation-they’ll just make you feel lousy. (避免过度解读和猜测-它们只会让你感觉糟糕。)”可知,故选择C。
40.E 考查考生理解篇章布局,建立段内衔接关系的能力。根据前后文“You can always reject criticism that does not match what your core beliefs tell you is correct. . . When it's your turn to hear criticism, remember: just because someone says it,doesn’t mean it’s true. (你总是可以拒绝不符合你核心信念的批评······当轮到你听到批评的时候,记住:有人说了,并不意味着它是真的。)”可知,故选择E。

听力原文
Text 1
W: I have to go shopping and take the dog for a walk before I can go to the library.
M: You’ll be happy to know that you can go now if you want- I did the shopping already and Bob took the dog out earlier. Text 2
M: I'll do anything as long as it means getting out of here.
W: Well, I don’t think changing your environment will make things better. You should learn to be content with the place where you are first.
Text 3
W: What type of work are you looking for?
M: I used to be a typist and then a program designer. And I would appreciate the possibility of working in any firm connected with electrical engineering.
Text 4
M: Do you eat a lot of fruit in your country?
W: Yes, we do. The most popular fruit is the orange, since local people grow lots of oranges. We also eat apples and pears, but they are much more expensive because we have to import them from other countries.
Text5
W: Jeremy, what subject do you want to major in at college?
M: My parents suggest medicine, but my dream is to become a psychologist. What about you?
W: I prefer geography.
Text 6
M: Have you heard of Zoom? It is a video conference program.
W: Is that the one where you can call people's telephone numbers?
M: No. That one is called Skype. Zoom is more like Google Meet or Facebook Messenger. You can only talk to others through the same program.
W: Is it expensive?
M: Well, I use the free version. I only talk to two people at a time, so there's no time limit. However, if you talk to three people, you can only speak for 40 minutes. If I had more people, I would definitely buy a monthly plan, though. It's a great deal and tool for professionals.
Text 7
W: Mr. Lee, would you and your wife be free next Friday night?
M: I don't think we have any plans, but I would need to see what my wife has planned. Why? W: I mailed a written invitation to your wife asking you both to our dinner party.
M: It would be our pleasure to join you for dinner. What type of party is it?
W: We've always wanted to have a formal dinner party.
M: I think we would enjoy that!
W: Four other couples are coming, so I'm hoping for some interesting conversation.
M: I am sure we will have a great time. Are some of the couples from our company?
W: Yes, you will know all of our guests.
M: I'll check the mail for the invitation. Your dinner plan sounds wonderful.
Text 8
W: What are you doing, Charles?
M: I'm reading some online news. It's about an ancient Chinese thing called the Tiger Ying. It was taken to the United Kingdom in the 19th century and has finally returned to China.
W: So how old is it?
M: About 3, 000 years old. It is from the late period of the Western Zhou Dynasty.
W: So how did it return to China?
M: It was sold for 410, 000 pounds on April 1I to a buyer whose name remains unknown. The buyer gave it to China. It is now in the National Museum of China.
Text 9
W: Hi, George? My name is Dianne. I'm here to show you around.
M: Thank you. I appreciate it. The first few days can be a little stressful.
W: I completely understand. We all have been in your position. Where have you been told to go today?
M: I think it was the science lab, on the first floor. Apparently I won't be staying there, though. W: That's correct. Just for homeroom, from 8: 50 to 9: 00.
M: What is homeroom?
W: It's where students gather in the morning to check in before class. It also gives them a short rest period before their first class.
M: That's a good idea. That way, we don't have to waste class time calling out names. Please continue.
W: Students won't have to put away their backpacks until 9: 10 and then enter their first class of the day. The same goes for us. M: What do you teach?
W: Social studies, on the second floor. In fact, my classroom is right under your math classroom. If you have any questions, feel free to come down and see me. Welcome to the school, and good luck on your first day!
Text 10
W: Running a few kilometers each day is good for our health. However, new research says running too much could be bad for us. Running long distances regularly for many years could make our life shorter, not longer. The study is from the Minneapolis Heart Institute. A researcher said too much running could lead to heart disease. He wrote that running too much for many years takes away the good things from exercise. He added that the risk of heart disease could be the same as someone who never exercises. Researchers looked at the health and training of 3, 300 runners over the age of 35. Seventy percent of them ran over 30 kilometers a week. Men who ran marathons for 25 years had 62% greater chances of developing heart disease than men who did little or no exercise. Another doctor said he felt cheated. He started running marathons and doing triathlons in 1967. He used to run 60 kilometers every week. He said: “I thought I was out there exhausting myself, building an absolutely indestructible heart. ” The doctor advised people to exercise regularly but not to overdo things.
