At noon, I would race breathlessly home, a ten-minute walk from my school. My mother was waiting for me with pleasure to have lunch while I shared what happened at school.
I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, hardly had I stepped on stage when every word escaped me. Finally, my teacher asked me to change to a narrator’s (解说员) part. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
Under the rose vine, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) as if a painter had touched our landscape with shades of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, swe’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I argued. “All flowers are beautiful - even dandelions.”
My mother asked thoughtfully, “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” I nodded, pleased I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. I burst into tears, a mixture of relief and regret swelling up as I told her what had happened.
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging me as she did. “The narrator’s part is important, too.” Composing myself gradually, I began to accept the narrator’s part. Then came the performance day. I was still nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket. It was obvious that my mom secretly put the flower there, which magically gave me confidence.
    24. Why did the author get changed to the narrator’s part? ______
    A. She was shy. B. She lacked practice.
    C. She disliked the former role. D. She totally forgot the lines.
    25. What did her mother do when the author felt upset? ______
    A. Her mother asked her what happened patiently.
    B. Her mother insisted on her practicing the lines.
    C. Her mother made her realize every role counted.
    D. Her mother immediately encouraged her to cheer up.
    26. Which of the following can best describe the author’s mother? ______
    A. Sympathetic but strict. B. Understanding and wise.
    C. Passionate but anxious. D. Curious and easy-going.
    27. What does the text mainly tell us? ______
    A. All that glitters is not gold.
    B. Actions speak louder than words.
    C. Constant dripping wears away a stone.
    D. Every individual can make a difference.
    C
Why should I stay off Facebook and other social media when I am involved in a lawsuit or personal injury case? Social media has become an important part of our everyday lives. Facebook, Instagram, and other social media have changed the way we communicate with friends, family, and colleagues. Many of us use these platforms to post opinions, show off our achievements or show your opinions on public affairs.
This means that social media is public information and can be used against you. Lawyers can use social media as evidence. They often look for pictures and posts that could potentially disprove your injury claim. Your posts can still be found even if your information is private when the posts potentially are related to your case. The court may determine that your public posts may lead to admissible evidence. They will not make you offer entire information, but only what they think is related. Defense lawyers wish to prove that the injured party, physically, emotionally, or financially, is lying about their injuries.
Even posting about your emotions can discount your claim greatly. Say, you are suing (起诉) someone for your pain and suffering because you are depressed, yet you post pictures of yourself smiling and you have quoted “Life is good” attached to the photo. If and when the defense lawyers get a hold of the posts, your pain and suffering claim may not hold up in court.
Most people only post about the good times on social media, rarely about the hardships and misfortunes. Insurance companies are allowed to follow you and gather information as evidence. Social media makes it easier. Before social media, insurance companies and lawyers had to hire investigators to follow people around to spy on them. Social media makes this entirely a lot easier.
If you have posted content related to your claim, you must not change evidence. Deleting your account would be considered you’re destroying evidence and that will affect your case. The best practice would be to stay off social media until your case has come to a close.
    28. Why does the writer begin the passage with a question?
    A. To describe the drawback of Facebook.
    B. To provide the background information.
    C. To give his argument and attract readers.
    D. To stress the function of the social media.
    29. What does the underlined word “admissible” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Powerful. B. Final. C. Acceptable. D. Equal.
    30. What’s the writer’s attitude towards social media?
    A. Supportive. B. Cautious. C. Disapproval. D. Indifferent.
    31. Which of the following can be the main idea of the passage?
    A. Keep away from social media.
    B. Post good and bad things on social media.
    C. Communicate with your friends face to face.
    D. Stay off social media for a personal injury claim.

Have you ever imagined going inside of a video game? That dream may soon become real. It’s called the “metaverse”.
The metaverse is a shared virtual 3D world, or worlds. The word is a combination of “meta”, which means beyond, and “verse”, which refers to “universe”. The word first appeared in a 1992 science fiction book called Snow Crash. In this story, people wear virtual reality (VR) headsets to see and join the metaverse.
Now, what happens in the book is becoming a reality. Wearing a VR headset, you can meet other people wherever they are. You can work and play with them. It will feel real because the technology can simulate (模拟) our senses: vision, hearing, touch, and even smell.
“We’re talking about creating another reality, another world, that’s as rich as the real world,” said Rev Lebaredian, vice president of simulation technology at NVIDIA, a US tech company.
So, what can you do inside of the metaverse? Your location will no longer matter, says VOA News. In the metaverse, “people…would be connected at all times…” You can meet friends from other countries and go on a virtual beach vacation together. But forget Thailand—you can go to the beach on the moon, or anywhere else you can imagine. Can’t find a friend to play basketball?Jump into the metaverse and find some friends to play with or go to a concert!
Cathy Hackle, an expert in metaverse technology, said her son’s first concert was inside of a video game. “Just because it happened in a video game, it didn’t make it less real for him,” she said.
Perhaps the metaverse will change our idea of what is real.
    32. What can we learn from Paragraph 2? ______
    A. How you can join the metaverse.
    B. People’s imagination of the metaverse.
    C. An introduction to the game company.
    D. Where the word“metaverse”comes from.
    33. Wearing a VR headset, you can ______ .
    A. feel what you can touch B. meet anyone you want to see
    C. create your own virtual world D. design your own video games
    34. What do we know fromVOA News? ______
    A. The location is of great importance.
    B. Scenes in the metaverse are all connected.
    C. You can visit any place you like in the metaverse.
    D. The metaverse will replace traditional video games.
    35. What is Cathy Hackl’s attitude toward the metaverse? ______
    A. The metaverse will hardly change our lives.
    B. The metaverse is just a different kind of reality.
    C. It is not good for kids to join the metaverse.
    D. The technology still needs to be developed.

First live class held from China’s space station Three Chinese astronauts’ amazing voices reverberated (回响) in the ground classrooms as the schoolchildren listened with attention. Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping, and Ye Guangfu delivered the lecture and it was not an ordinary course. 36 A total of 1, 420 students attended the lecture from five classrooms across China.
Assisted by the other two crew members, Wang first gave a tour around, telling students how they go about their lives and work on the space station. She showed them the microwave, water machine and refrigerator in the space kitchen. 37 Wang said the water they drink is recycled, noting that there is no difference in taste between regular and recycled water.
Wang said the astronauts may look a little fat and swollen (肿胀的) as the microgravity in space can affect blood circulation. 38 She showed the students how to increase their upper limb strength with the bike by putting her hands on the pedals and floating upside down.
In a series of experiments related to water, Wang and Ye showed the students how liquids behave differently in space due to the absence of gravitational force. In a buoyancy (浮力) experiment, Wang put a table tennis ball in a glass of water. 39 However, it remained in the middle of the water. Buoyancy almost disappeared in the weightless environment.
At the end of the 60-minute class, the three astronauts tried to satisfy students’ curiosity through a real-time question and answer session. How do oxygen and carbon dioxide recycle on the space station? Do stars still twinkle in space? 40 “The secrets of space and science are boundless, and the future is yours,” said Zhai, commander of the Shenzhou-13 mission.

    A. It didn’t float to the surface like on Earth.
    B. It is made full use of on the space station.
    C. They ended the class with their best wishes.
    D. She opened the mini-fridge and took out a fresh apple.
    E. They use a spin bike and resistance bands to stay healthy.
    F. They did experiments in the weightless environment in space.
    G. It came from some 400 km above Earth on China’s space station.
