Born on July 1st, 1948, in the small Italian city of Palmi, Roberto Crea was a genius kid. He moved to the Netherlands and majored in Biological Chemistry. It was this university that directed his interest in the synthesis(合成) of nucleotides, the basic units that are required to build DNA. At that time, not many researchers studied the combination of genes, but Roberto’s strong chemistry background made a historical invention possible.
In 1977, he joined the Genentech, Inc. and the gene synthesis team at City of Hope Medical School. The company funded Dr. Crea’s ongoing research on gene synthesis. After working day and night, the brilliant individual finally invented a new procedure that improved the chemical synthesis of genes. Thanks to his rich knowledge and the joint efforts of the excellent Genentech team, he made use of this discovery to produce the human insulin(胰岛素) genes, A and B. It was his invention that allowed Genentech to be labeled as the first producer of human protein. This benefited hundreds of millions of people suffering from diabetes(糖尿病) all over the world.
Today Roberto is known as the father of synthetic insulin and almost won the Nobel Prize. His efforts did not stop after discovering the synthetic insulin; in fact, he was more than driven and tried to make more contributions to the field of biotechnology. His team of experts discovered Ziconotide under his teachings and guidance. According to leading scientists and researchers, this drug is more powerful and effective than morphine(吗啡), and the best part of this is that it has zero side-effects.
Dr. Roberto Crea has a long list of creditable discoveries and researches that he has achieved in 65 years of his life. He is an inspiration for many individuals who aim to add value to humanity with the help of science.
24. What may contribute to Roberto’s invention of the human insulin genes?
A. His good luck in his life. B. His curiosity about his study.
C. His creative imagination. D. His knowledge of chemistry.
25. What do the underlined words “this discovery” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A special way of producing human protein.
B. A reliable method for curing people of diabetes.
C. A new procedure for improving gene synthesis.
D. A simple technique of separating human genes.
26. What do we know about Roberto in Paragraph 3?
A. He won a Nobel Prize. B. He stuck to his scientific research.
C. He discovered morphine with his team. D. He retired after making the great discovery.
27. Which of the following best describes Roberto?
A. Enthusiastic and generous. B. Courageous and calm.
C. Ambitious and patient. D. Committed and talented.

In a street which is largely unchanged since it was built in the 1800s, Hobart’s Battery Point is probably the last place you would expect to find a farm.
In one comer of Peter Handy’s backyard is a controlled environment unit that houses vertical pastures(垂直牧场), the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere(半球), Mr, Handy is changing the definition of what it means to be a farmer. “I know it’s really funny, because when people say to me, ‘Where’s your farm?’, I’ll say ‘it’s in Battery Point’ and they’re like, ‘No. there’s no farms in Battery Point’,” he said. “People think the Martians have landed because we’ve got this massive, big pink light that comes out of it from the bottom, but other than that, they’d have no idea.”
Not just a backyard project, Mr. Handy is running a business. “It’s here because I need to be as close to my customers, the chefs and restaurants of Hobart,” he said. “I aim to use the least amount of food miles as possible and make this a super-efficient business.”
Using LED lights and hydroponic nutrients, the farm grows leafy greens, root vegetables and flowering plants. “I don’t have to worry about floods, wind, wild animals, electric fences, turning the soil over,” Mr. Handy said. Using 95 percent less water than traditional farming, the farm ticks the box environmentally. “I mean, this is definitely not the answer to food sustainability in the world. But it’s definitely a part of it.”
Science writer Julian Cribb believes a world food crisis is coming, due to a combination of loss of water, loss of topsoil, climate change and overuse of poisons. “We’re going to need to change the nature of the way we produce food and change the human diet at the same time,” he said, “and new urban farming methods would see most of the world’s great cities feeding themselves.”
Mr. Cribb said Australia was still quite a way off from adopting urban farming. But he believes that poses a rather unique opportunity for Australian farmers to sell their expertise to cities, teaching people to grow food in urban environments.
28. How might people feel about Mr. Handy’s farm?
A. Scared. B. Confused. C. Impressed. D. Disappointed.
29. What does Mr. Handy say about his farm?
A. It is unaffected by weather. B. It mainly plants and sells flowers.
C. It serves customers from near and far. D. It is the solution to food sustainability.
30. Why does the author mention Mr. Cribb’s words in paragraph 5?
A. To praise his contribution to science. B. To explain how urban farming works.
C. To stress the necessity of urban farming. D. To present the seriousness of the food crisis.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Cities are struggling to get food B. Technology is changing people’s life
C. Peter Handy is a successful businessman D. Food production is being moved into cities
D
Hundreds of native North American plants, often dismissed as weeds, deserve a lot more respect, according to a new study. These plants, distant cousins of foods like sunflowers and lettuce(莴苣), actually represent a botanical treasure now facing increased threats from climate change and habitat loss. The crops that the human race now depends on, including grains like wheat and tree fruit like peaches, originally were selected or bred(培育) from plants that grew wild hundreds or thousands of years ago. In the U. S., there are wild ancestors of blueberries, sweet potatoes, onions, potatoes, and many other food crops. “Some of them are quite common,” says Colin Khoury, a research scientist at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture. “Wild lettuce plants grow along sidewalks, or in backyards, but go unrecognized.”
Other crop relatives are rare and threatened. One of Khoury’s favorites is the paradoxical sun flower. “It grows just in wetlands of the deserts of New Mexico and Texas, little salty areas where there’s a little bit of water beneath the soil,” he says. So plant growers crossbred it with commercial sunflowers and created new varieties that can grow in places where the soil contains more salt. Other wild relatives may be hiding similarly remarkable gifts, Khoury says, such as genes that could help their domesticated relatives survive diseases, or deal with pests.
Khoury and some of his colleagues just finished a survey of about 600 wild crop relatives that grow in North America, and they found that most of these plants are threatened by things like fires, farming and development. The scientists argue that they deserve more protection. For one thing, “gene banks” should collect and preserve them. In addition, these plants need more protection in their natural habitat.
According to Khoury, that doesn’t necessarily mean setting aside land for them. In many cases, the plants already are growing on public land that’s managed by the U. S. Forest Service (USFS) or the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). “It s more about just being aware that these plants actually exist,” he says.
32. What did the new study mainly focus on?
A. Endangered plant species. B. Wild relatives of food crops.
C. The impacts of climate change. D. The threats from plant habitat loss.
33. What do we know about the paradoxical sunflower?
A. It needs much water to grow well.
B. It grows along sidewalks or in backyards.
C. It seems capable of surviving various diseases.
D. It helps commercial sunflowers adapt to salty soil.
34. How might the scientists feel about their survey results?
A. Concerned. B. Relieved. C. Annoyed. D. Critical.
35. What might Khoury suggest the BLM do?
A. Join hands with the USFS. B. Set aside land for wild plants.
C. Learn about plants on its managed land. D. Collect genes of threatened crop species.

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Wherever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her deskmate, Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was laughed at by her classmates, who were always chanting(唱起…歌) “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti(意大利面)”.
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to visit her grandfather. Her grandfather lives on a farm, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a special one. Hidden in the comer, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it?” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking(啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
Oh, what a poor little thing! “Catherine let out a sigh as she picked the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around, and...” Everyone was entertained by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter spreading around the classroom.

Take Exams Honestly
Dear fellow students,
Nowadays many students care too much about high grades, resulting in growing inappropriate behaviors in exams. As far as I am concerned, taking exams with integrity is necessary. I advocate that we students should take exams honestly.
Honesty is considered as one of important Chinese traditional virtues. As a student, we should avoid cheating in every exam, which is a right way to demonstrate our integrity. In other words, the process of learning is more meaningful than getting a seemingly perfect but unreal result.
All in all, it is high time that we should value honesty.
possible version:
Then Catherine spotted Landy seated alone in a corner. She ducked her head with her eyes fixed on the floor as usual. It hit Catherine that the pecking order worked in school, too. Landy was just like the poor little chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. “It’s high time to do something for a change.” Catherine thought to herself. Having made up her mind, she urged the rest cool kids to make peace with Landy. Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming, “Talking to the long spaghetti? Are you crazy?”
But Catherine walked directly toward Landy, no matter what they said. “Landy, sorry about the spaghetti thing. I should have realized it earlier. Can you forgive us? “Catherine murmured an apology, her face reddening. She figured Landy might just walk away. But she lifted her misty eyes and nodded yes. Catherine wiped away her tears, giving her a warm hug. Moved by the scene, the other kids also came to offer their sincere apologies to Landy. From that day on, no one made up silly chants about Landy, and Catherine also learned that everyone should be treated equally no matter how special he or she was.

W: Hello, George! There’s a book exhibition in the Stadium Expo Hall tomorrow afternoon. Many famous novelists will be doing book signings there. Would you like to attend it?

M: Actually, I’m considering the University of Edinburg Business School. They offer good economics courses there.
W: That’s an old university with a great reputation.

M: OK. When will that start?
W: At 4: 30 pm.
(Text 9)

Born with severe heart disease, Aria Brown had been told by local doctors there was nothing they could do. But surgeons at Boston Children’s Hospital believed they could save her life. However, transporting the girl cross-country, with all the medical equipment needed for her survival, seemed impossible. Luckily, a company called Perfect Rental opened its heart and wallet. Neither flying nor driving a car was an option. The family said an RV, a recreational vehicle, was their only hope. To raise the money for the trip, they set up a GoFundMe page. They aimed to find someone who could rent an RV to them. They also hoped to raise $ 10, 000 to cover the cost of the journey. They did raise $6, 800, but what happened next was more than what the family could have dreamed of. A charitable man shared the page on the Internet, which allowed Perfect Rental to see it. The company reacted to the cause quickly. They designed a special RV for the family. They even covered the RV rental costs and the accommodation fees for their stay in Boston. Thanks to the help from various parties, the girl was successfully saved.

根据第一段的“Hundreds of native North American plants, often dismissed as weeds, deserve a lot more respect, according to a new study. These plants, distant cousins of foods like sunflowers and lettuce, actually represent a botanical treasure now facing increased threats from climate change and habitat loss. (根据一项新的研究,数百种北美本土植物,通常被认为是杂草,应该得到更多的尊重。这些植物是向日葵和生菜等食物的远亲,实际上是一种面临气候变化和栖息地丧失日益严重威胁的植物瑰宝。)”可知,这项新研究主要关注的是粮食作物的野生亲缘。
33. 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“So plant growers crossbred it with commercial sunflowers and created new varieties that can grow in places where the soil contains more salt.(因此,植物种植者将它与商业向日葵杂交,创造出可以在土壤含盐更多的地方生长的新品种。)”
根据第三段中的“Khoury and some of his colleagues just finished a survey of about 600 wild crop relatives that grow in North America, and they found that most of these plants are threatened by things like fires, farming and development. (库里和他的一些同事刚刚完成了一项对大约600种生长在北美的野生作物亲属的调查,他们发现这些植物中的大多数都受到火灾、农业和开发等因素的威胁。)”可知,科学家们对约600种野生植物进行了调研后发现,其中绝大多数的生存状况不容乐观,受到了诸如火灾、农耕及社会发展的威胁。由此可推知,科学家们对其发现会感到担忧。
35. 推理判断题。根据最后一段的“In many cases, the plants already are growing on public land that’s managed by the U. S. Forest Service (USFS) or the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).(在许多情况下,这些植物已经生长在由美国林务局(USFS)或土地管理局(BLM)管理的公共土地上。)”和“It’s more about just being aware that these plants actually exist(更重要的是要意识到这些植物确实存在)”可推知,Khoury可能会建议美国内政部土地管理局去了解其管辖范围内的植物,从而保护这些野生植物。

36. G。上文“Body language is different depending on what sort of animal you have chosen as your pet.”(肢体语言的不同取决于你选择哪种动物作为你的宠物。 而G项“If you’re unsure of your pet’s body language, consider reading some articles for your specific animal.”(如果你不确定你的宠物的肢体语言,考虑为你所特有的动物读一些文章。)

56. greeting 57. a 58. to express 59. apologies 60. various
61. its 62. was introduced 63. that 64. with 65. dates
这里a sign of表示“……的标志”,表示泛指。故填a。
故填to express。
故填its。
故填was introduced。
故填that。
possible version:
Take Exams Honestly
Dear fellow students,
Nowadays many students care too much about high grades, resulting in growing inappropriate behaviors in exams. As far as I am concerned, taking exams with integrity is necessary. I advocate that all of us students should take exams honestly.
But Catherine walked directly toward Landy, regardless of what they said. “Landy, sorry about the spaghetti thing. I should have realized it earlier. Can you forgive us?” Catherine murmured an apology, her face reddening.
