The child suffered serious injuries, while a man suffered minor injuries, Alaska State Troopers said.

The incident occurred Tuesday around 6:30 p.m. local time near Palmer, located about 40 miles northeast of Anchorage, police said.

The pair, who are related, were hunting moose (驼鹿) in the Palmer Hay Flats area, a state game refuge, Alaska State Troopers spokesperson Austin McDaniel told ABC News. Troopers did not say clearly their relationship. They met with a brown bear that then attacked the child, troopers said. The man shot and killed the bear during the attack, police said.

Troopers and EMS responding to the scene following reports of a bear attack found the two victims, who were taken to a hospital in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley area, Troopers said.

McDaniel said the last report he received had the child listed in “fair condition.”

The brown bear was with a cub (baby animal) at the time of the attack. The Alaska Wildlife Troopers and Alaska Department of Fish and Game were unable to locate a cub in the area after ground and aerial searches, McDaniel said.

Makers of self-driving, or autonomous vehicles have raised tens of billions of dollars based on promises to develop the fully robotic product.

However, industry leaders and experts say the technology may forever require human supervision(监督).Supporters of autonomous vehicles, or AVs, say that computers and robotic technology will reduce the number of traffic accidents. But actually, making self-driving cars safer than human-operated is complex(复杂的). Self-driving programming has no the human ability to predict and recognize risk quickly. Kyle Vogt is the head of General Motors (GM). When asked if he believed humans could ever be completely free of vehicle operation, Vogt questioned the values of such a goal.

GM recalled and updated software in 80 Cruise self-driving vehicles this month after an accident in June. Two people were injured in the accident in San Francisco, California. U.S. safety officials said the recalled software could “incorrectly predict” an oncoming vehicle's path. Cruise said its vehicles would not make the same mistake again after the update.

For some, the need for human supervision increases doubt about the technology. And entirely self-driving vehicles are far behind in development that industry leaders have promised. In 2018, GM wanted to get U.S. government approval for a fully autonomous car. It had no steering wheel(方向盘) or brake or gas pedals. It was to be marketed in 2019. But that vehicle, the Cruise Origin, now is not expected to begin production until spring 2023, Vogt said. In 2019, Tesla head Elon Musk promised 1 million robotaxis would be in place by 2020. His company's “Full Self Driving” feature has been criticized(批评) because its cars use human operators. In June, Musk said that building self-driving cars had been far more difficult than he had expected. He said: “If these companies don't succeed over the next two years, they're not going to exist anymore.”

Many AV companies today use humans as remote piloting supervisors(远程驾驶监督员). They support self-driving cars in dealing with unexpected events on the road. The industry calls these “edge cases.” Edge cases could include street closures for roadwork, or unpredictable actions by a human driver or walker. Kaveh said their work is similar to air traffic controllers but for autonomous cars instead of planes. Cruise’s Vogt says the company's AVs on the roads in San Francisco currently depend on humans less than one percent of the time. But across thousands or even millions of AVs, that would add up to a large amount of time stopped on the road waiting for human guidance. “I am worried that AV companies will rush to market without proving the safety is better than human-driven vehicles,” he said.

    34. Why is the safety of self-driving cars a complex problem?

    A. Because the company of autonomous cars have raised enough money.

    B. Because self-driving cars can’t predict and recognize risk quickly.

    C. Because self-driving cars may forever require human supervision.

    D. Because AV companies will rush to market without proving the safety.

    35. What is wrong with the recalled 80 Cruise self-driving vehicles?

    A. Self-driving vehicles would make the same mistake often.

    B. AV companies use humans as remote piloting supervisors

    C. Self-driving vehicles are not expected to begin production until spring 2023.

    D. They could not predict an oncoming car's path correctly.

    36. What can you infer from the fourth paragraph?

    A. Ifthesecompaniesdon'tsucceedoverthenexttwoyears,they'renotgoingtoexistanymore.

    B. Tesla head Elon Musk promised 1 million robotaxis would be in place by 2020.

    C. It is a long way to go to develop a fully autonomous vehicle.

    D. Millions of AVs would have to stop on the road to wait for human guidance.

    37. Which of the following is not “edge cases.”?

    A. changes of traffic lights on the road

    B. street closure because of road repair

    C. unpredictable actions by a human driver

    D. unpredictable behaviors of walkers

    38. What does the passage most probably belong to?

    A. Science news report  B. An ad

    C. A text  D. A medical report

    Dear Jimmy,

I’m sorry to hear that you are so stressed in your senior high school that your life and study has been affected. It is understandable that you have this kind of feelings. It is common for teenagers to have difficulty adapting to the new environment. Perhaps the following suggestions will be of help.

To begin with, it is wise to keep a balance between study and rest. Good rest advances your study. Additionally, it is highly recommended that you should communicate with your friends and teachers about your problems. I’m sure you will get back your confidence in this way. Most importantly, you will be more organized if you can make a learning schedule.

I sincerely hope my suggestions are beneficial to you.

    Best wishes,

    Li Hua

    解析

    A

    21. C 根据题干,依据定位在第一段,注意 C 项中 be tired of 与原文 be bored (with)同义。

根据第一段中“And his friend General Miranda had a library with more than 6,000 books. Margaret loved reading there. Her intelligence impressed him.(他的朋友米兰达将军有一个藏书 6000 多本书的图书馆。玛格丽特喜欢在那里读书。她的聪明才智给他留下了深刻的印象)”以及第三段中““Yes, you can!said General Miranda. All you have to do is to disguise as a boy.(“是的,你可以!”General Miranda 说。“你所要做的就是伪装成一个男孩。”)”可知,是叔叔的朋友 General Miranda 鼓励她去实现自己的梦想。故选 A

根据画线词后文“So she cut off her long hair, practiced speaking in a deep voice, and put on boys clothes.(于是她剪掉了长发,练习用低沉的声音说话,穿上了男孩的衣服)”可知,为了成为一名医生,把自己的头发剪短,装扮成一个男孩,故画线词意思与 change ones appearance 同义。故选 C

根据第三段“Margaret really wanted to be a doctor. So she cut off her long hair, practiced speaking in a deep voice, and put on boy’s clothes. She also named herself James Barry.( Margaret 很想成为一名医生。

从文章第二段“ But actually, making self-driving cars safer than human-operated is complex(复杂的). Self-driving programming has no the human ability to predict and recognize risk quickly.”

从文章第三段“ the recalled software could "incorrectly predict" an oncoming vehicle's path. ”

It is a long way to go to develop a fully autonomous vehicle.

37.答案:A. 从最后一段“Edge cases could include street closures for roadwork, or unpredictable actions by a human driver or walker”可以得知 changes of traffic lights on the road是一种正常情况;不属于 Edge cases

    Text 1

W: What would you like to drink, sir? Juice or milk?

    M: Can I have a beer?

W: Sorry, sir, but we don’t provide beer on this plane.

M: Well, please give me a glass of fruit juice.

    Text 2

M: Will you go to that middle school to teach?

W: I’m not really interested. I prefer to work at a restaurant.

    M: Why?

W: I like dealing with different people.

    Text 3

M: Excuse me, but can you tell me where the history books are?

W: Certainly. They are right behind physics books.

M: Oh, right. On that shelf. I can see them. Thank you.

    Text 4

M: Look at the sky, Jane. How clear it is now!

W: Yes. Luckily, the wind in the afternoon blew away those dark clouds, but the weather report says it’s going to rain in 12 hours.

    Text 5

W: Did you see The Violinist when it was in the theaters? It was great.

M: Yes. That’s a movie I will always remember. I think it’s the best movie I have ever seen.

    Text 6

W: Hello, young man. Be a good boy and help an old woman cross the street, would you?

M: Of course, madam. I’d be glad to.

W: Thank you. I’m afraid these legs don’t move as fast as they used to.

M: Well, I think you’re looking very healthy. By the way, where are you going today?

W: Oh, I’m just going to the drugstore over there. I’ve got to pick up medicine for my husband.

M: Well, I’ll wait for you outside the drugstore and help you back across the street whenever you’re ready.

    W: You are so kind!

    Text 7

M: Linda, Christmas is getting close. When will you go and do Christmas shopping?

W: I read an article on the Internet the other day. It tells when we can avoid long lines when doing Christmas shopping. According to the article, two hours before noon is the best time in the day to do Christmas shopping.

M: Does it say on which day there are the shortest lines?

W: Yes. It’s usually on Sundays.

M: Great. In this case, let’s go shopping together tomorrow morning.

W: Why not! I’ve no special plans for tomorrow morning after all.

    Text 8

W: Peter, do you live in the red house at the end of the road?

M: Yes, I live in that house with my parents and my sister. We also have a dog.

W: Do you take your dog for a walk every day?

M: No. My father takes the dog for a walk on Sunday. And I take the dog for a walk on Friday. My mom and my sister walk him on the other workdays.

W: Who walks the dog on Saturday?

M: On Saturday We all go to the park and the dog comes with us.

W: Do you help with the housework?

M: Yes. My mom and my sister do the laundry, my father does the cooking, and I sweep the floor.

    Text 9

    W: You’re leaving school soon, aren’t you?

M: Yes, my A-levels start next week, but I’m not bothered about the results, because when I leave school I’m going to concentrate on my music career. I’m the leading singer in a band and I don’t need any qualifications to be a pop star. I see my future very clearly. I’m going to be incredibly famous and rich.

W: So you’ve already got a contract then?

M: Not yet. But the minute I’ve taken my last exam, I’m going to find a really good manager. And I’m moving to London as soon as I’ve left school. London’s where it all happens in the music industry.

W: Do you think you’ll be able to live off your music right from the start?

M: Well, at first we might have to get part-time jobs for a few months and it’s going to be hard, but I bet you, by this time next year, we’ll have had a record in the charts.

    Text 10

When I was eight years old, one day, my father took my brother and me on a picnic beside a river. When we arrived there, my father told us the river was very dangerous. He made us promise not to walk up to it. But I was too curious about it. I thought there must be kinds of fish in the river. So I did not keep my promise. I walked into the river and saw many fish. When I wanted to catch a fish, I fell down. Because the river was very deep, I could not stand or touch the bottom. I cried out loudly, but nobody was there, except my brother Danny. My father had gone to search for some wood. Danny was very scared. He didn’t know what he could do, because he was two years younger than me. He jumped in, but that just made the situation worse, because he was even shorter than me and he couldn’t swim. Both of us cried out. Fortunately, there was a farmer who passed by. He saved us before our father came back.
