Recently whenever I turned on my computer or my mobile phone, news about the great effect of Hurricane Harvey (哈维飓风)on thousands of people caught my eye. I saw many unfortunate events. However, there was also lots of bright news that showed the goodness of mankind. As a reporter, I reported many human-interest stories when doing my job, That’s why the story about the guys in the bakery(面包店)caught my eye.
When the workers at a Mexican bakery chain in Houston were trapped inside the building for two days, they didn't sit there feeling sorry for themselves. They used their time wisely after flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. While waiting for the eventual rescue that came on Monday morning, the four workers decided to make as many loaves of bread as possible for people around the neighborhood. They talked to their manager about their plan over the phone and the manager agreed.
The flood water rose in the street outside. They took advantage of their emergency power supply to bake bread. They used more than 4,200 pounds of flour(面粉)to create hundreds of loaves and sheets of sweet bread. Although the water kept rising, they continued baking to help more people. By the time the manager managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that they took the loaves to lots of emergency centers across the city for people affected by the floods.
The store manager, Brian Alvarado, told The Independent, “They've done more than they should have done. And what they had done has lit a light for people. I feel lucky to have them work in the bakery.”
Whenever a disaster occurs, nobody should feel forlorn. Instead, we should stay hopeful and take positive action to save ourselves and help others. Our acts of kindness will make a big difference to the people in the world as well as the world itself.

A. He found them lucky. B. He was proud of them.
C. They were experienced. D. They were shy but brave.
7. What does the underlined word “forlorn” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Hopeless. B. Confident. C. Serious. D. Angry.

Many animals need to move across large distances. Often they do this as part of their natural migration(迁徙). Sometimes animals need to move to a new area when food gets low or conditions get worse. However, humans have taken over huge areas of the planet. Roads and highways cut up the remaining natural areas into many small sections, making it dangerous for animals to move.
Many people are working to help animals by creating “wildlife corridors(走廊)”, trying to reconnect smaller natural areas so that animals can move over larger areas. One important step in creating these corridors is building wildlife bridges and tunnels to give animals a way to safely cross dangerous roads. These changes don’t just help animals, but they also save human lives by avoiding accidents.
On China's Hainan Island, scientists created a bridge for gibbons, an animal that lives in southern Asia. But in 2014, natural accidents caused huge gaps in the forest, forcing them to make dangerous jumps. Scientists created a simple and cheap bridge, which solved the problem. In 2018, the experts in Utah, America built a wildlife bridge over the busy highway. A 4.8-kilometer fence was created to help guide animals to the bridge. Normally, animals take a long time to discover and begin using wildlife bridges, so experts didn’t expect the bridge to get much traffic for several years. However, to their surprise, many different kinds of animals have already used the bridge.
Now people in other countries are looking to try similar ideas. In Brazil, scientists want to create bridges to help animals cross the hundreds of miles of highway that cuts through the Amazon rainforest. In Uttarakhand, India, an eco-bridge made from all-natural materials has been built. Though it's high in the trees, it’s expected to help smaller animals on the ground by reminding drivers that they're in an important natural area with lots of wildlife. Already, the bridge has got a lot of attention, with many people taking selfies(自拍照)in front of it.
8. Why are the wildlife corridors created?
A. To avoid the attack from animals. B. To offer a way to protect animals.
C. To improve animals' living conditions. D. To bring more convenience to humans.
9. How does the bridge in Utah surprise the experts?
A. Animals need no guide to it. B. Animals take more time to cross it.
C. It has made the traffic dangerous. D. It is used by many animals sooner.
10. What do we know about the eco-bridge in India?
A. It has become a hit for tourists. B. It is made of man-made materials.
C. It acts as a reminder for the hunter. D. It serves as a sign of a natural area.
11. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By making a comparison. B. By listing some examples.
C. By showing causes and effects. D. By following the order of tine
D
Every year, hundreds of hopeful students arrive in Washington, D. C., in order to compete in the National Spelling Bee, which has been held every year since 1925.
In the competition, students under 16 take turns trying to properly spell words. The champion is the only remaining student who does not make a mistake. American students are familiar with the competition because it is practiced in many schools throughout the country. The National Spelling Bee, however, is a much bigger setting and showcases only the best spellers from all parts of the nation. Winning the competition nowadays requires the ability to perform under much pressure against so many talented students in front of a large audience. A student who wins the event in the twenty-first century will experience a much different challenge than the first winner, Frank Neuhauser, did in 1925 when he defeated only nine other competitors.
Clearly, the 90 years of the National Spelling Bee’s existence proves the importance of spelling in the English language. However, struggles with spelling English words go back much more than 90 years. The charming thing about spelling correctly in English is that it is in many ways without rules. English language can absorb new words from other languages and in doing so make them “English” words. Because of this, the number of words in English is much higher than any other languages. Thus, spelling in many other languages has fewer words and fewer strange exceptions to rules. It turns out that a spelling bee in most other languages would be a waste of time. Why is that? Well, without so many exceptions to common vocabulary, there would be very few words that everyone didn’t already know.
12. How is today’s competition different from the first National Spelling Bee?
A. It produces more winners. B. It draws more talented audience.
C. It attracts more competitors. D. It tests more strange words.
13. Why does the author mention “other languages” in Paragraph 3?
A. To introduce the new rules of the competition. B. To gather students from other countries.
C. To explain the difficulty in English spelling. D. To show the strict rules of written English.
14. What’s the author’s attitude toward holding spelling competitions in most other languages?
A. Unfavorable. B. Supportive. C. Responsible. D. Doubtful.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Ways to win a Spelling Bee. B. The most difficult language.
C. The best spellers. D. A competition about spelling.
