The Curb-cut Effect (路缘坡效应) refers to the fact that supporting small groups of people often ends up helping much larger ranges of society.
    Curb cuts: Easing the walking
In the 1940s, hundreds of thousands of World War Ⅱ soldiers returned home with disabilities. Disappointed by the difficulties they faced, Jack Fisher of Kalamazoo, Michigan, as one of them, asked his city government to build an experimental curb cut-a gentle slope that brings the end of a sidewalk down to meet the level of the street-at the corners of several blocks downtown. A few months later, Fisher reported that even residents without wheelchairs were enjoying the impact of the little slopes.
    Reading machines: Getting the message
In 1976, technologist Ray Kurzweil invented a machine for the blind and visually damaged to change images into text that it then read aloud. Smart speakers with those voices are now in roughly one-quarter of US homes. By detecting street signs and house numbers, it is helping build the maps that self-driving cars use to navigate the world.
Closed captions (字幕): Following the conversation
Sears launched the first TV with a built-in equipment that allowed deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers to read along with their favorite programs in 1980. In the 1990s, text became increasingly common as DVDs and, later, streaming services added the ability to switch the words on at will. A 2006 survey found that only around 20 percent of the people using captions had hearing problems.
    DeafSpace designs: Keeping things quiet
More than 150 designs of the DeafSpace Project came from architect Hansel Bauman. One aim is to clear distracting noises, which can make it difficult for people to use their limited hearing abilities. By keeping conversations and other sound disturbances from walking and jumping around the room, these ways also make it easier for all sorts of students and workers to focus.

Growing up in a Jamaican-American household, food was an important part of my childhood. I remember my grandmother preparing fried dumplings and curry mutton, jazz music playing in the background. Food was our greatest treasure. Food brought the family together. Food celebrated new beginnings and eased the wounds of life’s untimely(过早的) endings.
When I was 8, I was diagnosed with a muscle disease, which caused me to spend most of my childhood in hospital rooms and wheelchairs, slowly gaining weight by swallowing prednisone(泼尼松药) hidden inside mint chocolate chip ice cream. My mom made it her duty to help me lose the weight through strict dieting. I’ve tried every single one. In fairness, my mother did the best she could. As a single mom, she felt this brought us closer. However, as an adult, I began to experience a paralyzing fear of food. My “I’ll start a new diet on Monday” mind-set lasted for 16 years as I uncontrollably ate and abused my body. I was worried that I was not attractive enough. So obsessed(困扰的) and afraid no one would hire me as an actress if I didn’t win the battle with the numbers on the scale, in February 2011, I attempted to kill myself and landed in the hospital for multiple days.
We do extreme things to our bodies because of those numbers. Numbers that cannot talk with us or love us. I have had to stop judging my belly, stop starving myself, stop getting on the scale and staring at those numbers. I have come to the realization that my life is more important than those numbers on the scale and that the quality of the life I live is more important than how I look in the mirror.
    4. What role did food play in author’s childhood?
    A. It healed her physical wounds. B. It strengthened the family bond.
    C. It was a source of family income. D. It marked the end of someone’s life.
    5. What made the mother feel closer to her daughter?
    A. Making cooking her daily duty. B. Raising the author as a single mom.
    C. Limiting the author to a strict diet. D. Preparing healthy food for the author.
    6. Why did the author want to kill herself?
    A. Because she hated food.
    B. Because she lost the battle with her disease.
    C. Because she was concerned that she would not get a job.
    D. Because she was worried about her worsening health state.
    7. How does the author feel about her weight now?
    A. Nervous. B. Satisfied. C. Worried. D. Unconcerned.
B 5. C 6. C 7. D
根据第二段“My mom made it her duty to help me lose the weight through strict dieting. I’ve tried every single one. In fairness, my mother did the best she could. As a single mom, she felt this brought us closer.(我妈妈通过严格的节食来帮助我减肥,这是她的责任。我都试过了。公平地说,我妈妈已经尽力了。作为一个单身母亲,她觉得这让我们更亲密)”可知,严格限制作者的饮食,使母亲感觉与女儿更亲近。故选C。
    【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“So obsessed and afraid no one would hire me as an actress if I didn’t win the battle with the numbers on the scale, in February 2011 I attempted suicide and landed in the hospital for multiple days.(我如此痴迷于此,害怕如果我不能在与数字的较量中取胜,就没有人会雇用我当演员。2011年2月,我试图自杀,结果在医院里住了好几天)”可知,她对失业的焦虑是导致作者企图自杀的直接原因。故选C。
    【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“I have come to the realization that my life is more important than those numbers on the scale and that the quality of the life I live is more important than how I look in the mirror.(我已经意识到我的生命比这些数字更重要,我生活的质量比我在镜子里的样子更重要)”可推知,作者现在对自己的体重毫不在意。故选D。
    C
As people across the globe struggled with higher levels of stress, depression and anxiety this past year, many turned to their favorite comfort foods: ice cream, pizza, hamburgers. But studies in recent years suggest that the high-sugar and high-fat foods when we are stressed or depressed, as comforting as they may seem, are the least likely to benefit our mental health. Instead, whole foods such as vegetables, fruit, fish, eggs, nuts may be a better bet.
Historically, nutrition research has focused largely on how the foods we eat affect our physical health, rather than our mental health, though. Over the years, large population studies have found that people assigned to follow a Mediterranean diet for three months had greater reductions in symptoms of depression after three months compared to a control group.
Public health experts around the world have started encouraging people to adopt lifestyle behaviors like exercise sound sleep, a heart-healthy diet and avoiding smoking that may reduce inflammation (发炎) and have benefits for the brain. Individual clinicians are already including nutrition into their work with patients. Dr. Drew Ramsey, a clinical professor at the Columbia University, begins his meetings with new patients by exploring their diet. He asks what they eat, learns their favorite foods, and finds out if foods that he considers important for the connection are missing from their diets, such as plants, seafood.
Dr. Ramsey said he does not wat people to think that the only factor involved in brain heath is food. “Lots of people get their food exactly right, live very active lives, and still have significant troubles with their mental health,” he said. But he also teaches people that food can be empowering. “We can’t control our genes,” he said. “But we can control how we eat, and that gives people actionable things that they can do to take care of their brain health on a daily basis.”
    8. What do previous nutrition studies mainly focus on?
    A. How our diets affect our mental health. B. How our diets affect our physical health.
    C. How our mental health affects our diets. D. How our physical health affects our diets.
    9. Why are individual clinicians including nutrition into their work with patients?
    A. They try to cater to their patients’ needs.
    B. They are questioning public health experts.
    C. They want to prove the effectiveness of healthy diets.
    D. They have accepted the findings of large population studies.
    10. Which of the following might Dr. Ramsey agree with?
    A. Some connection exists between our diets and mental health.
    B. People can control their genes as well as how they eat.
    C. People living active lives will not have mental problems.
    D. Eating a healthy diet is going to cure depression.
    11. What is the main idea of the text?
    A. People with anxiety usually turn to food for comfort.
    B. The daily diet is the factor connected with brain health.
    C. Controlling the way we eat is likely to benefit our mental health.
    D. Having a high-sugar diet can reduce symptoms of depression.
B 9. D 10. A 11. C
根据第二段“Historically, nutrition research has focused largely on how the foods we eat affect our physical health, rather than our mental health, though. (然而,从历史上看,营养研究主要关注我们所吃的食物如何影响我们的身体健康,而不是我们的心理健康)”可知,以前的营养研究主要关注我们的饮食如何影响我们的身体健康。故选B项。
    【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Over the years, large population studies have found that people assigned to follow a Mediterranean diet for three months had greater reductions in symptoms of depression after three months compared to a control group. (多年来,大量的人口研究发现,与对照组相比,被指定遵循地中海饮食法三个月的人在三个月后抑郁症状的减轻程度更大)”可知,大量人口研究结果显示,遵循地中海饮食法的人会减轻病症,所以个别临床医生要求将营养纳入他们对患者的工作是因为他们接受了大量人口研究的结果。故选D项。
    【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But we can control how we eat, and that gives people actionable things that they can do to take care of their brain health on a daily basis. (但我们可以控制我们的饮食方式,这让人们可以采取行动,每天都可以照顾自己的大脑健康)”可知,拉姆齐博士认为控制饮食方式可以让人们采取行动照顾自己的大脑健康,所以他同意饮食和心理健康之间存在某种联系。故选A项。
根据第一段“But studies in recent years suggest that the high-sugar and high-fat foods when we are stressed or depressed, as comforting as they may seem, are the least likely to benefit our mental health. (但是最近几年的研究表明,当我们感到压力或抑郁时,高糖和高脂肪的食物虽然看起来很舒服,但对我们的心理健康最不可能有好处)”以及最后一段“But we can control how we eat, and that gives people actionable things that they can do to take care of their brain health on a daily basis. (但我们可以控制我们的饮食方式,这让人们可以采取行动,每天都可以照顾自己的大脑健康)”可知,文章主要介绍了人们所吃的食物会影响心理健康,控制饮食方式可能有益于人们的心理健康。故选C项。
    D
This season, the bushfires in Australia have burned more than 12.35 million acres of land. At least 25 people have been killed and 2000 homes destroyed. According to the BBC, this is the most casualties (伤亡) from wildfires in the country since 2009. The University of Sydney estimates that 480 million animals have died in South Wales alone.
Zeke Hausfather, an energy systems analyst and climate researcher at Berkeley Earth, said warmer temperatures and extreme weather have made Australia more susceptible to fires and increased the length of the fire season. “The drier conditions combined with record high temperatures in 2019 created main conditions for the disastrous fires. Australia’s fires were worsened by the combination of those two. 2019 was the perfect storm for being the warmest year on record for Australia and the driest year on record for Australia,” Hausfather added on Friday.
Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research, said warmer ocean temperatures also contributed to more variable weather around the world. Trenberth believes that global warming contributed to energy imbalances and hot spots in the oceans, which can create a wave in the atmosphere that locks weather patterns in places, causing longer rain events in Indonesia, for example, and at the same time contributing to drought in Australia. He said that once an area experiences drought conditions for two months or more, it increases the risk of fires catching and spreading. Those changing weather patterns due to global warming make drought events longer.
Climate experts stress that climate change is not the only factor in the severity of wildfires. How land is managed can also impact the amount of fuel available for fires. Practices like controlled burns and other factors can impact the risk to people and property, such as warning systems and the type of development in a given area. Changing those policies has great potential to limit future damage from wildfires along with changes to how fire management resources are dispatched(派遣).
    12. What are the numbers about in Paragraph 1?
    A. The causes of Australian fires. B. The severe consequences of Australian fires.
    C. The damaged areas of Australian fires. D. The residence destruction of Australian fires.
    13. Which of the following best explains “susceptible to” in the second paragraph?
    A. Very quickly to adapt to. B. Very seriously to focus on.
    C. Very easily to be protected against. D. Very likely to be influenced by.
    14. What can we infer from Trenberth’s research?
    A. Warmer ocean temperatures promote fires spreading.
    B. Longer dry weather contributes to global warming.
    C. The imbalanced energy leads to the temperature rising.
    D. Global warming is the root cause of the bushfires.
    15. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
    A. To provide some advice about reducing damage. B. To show the methods for controlling burns.
    C. To predict the seriousness of Australian fires. D. To stress the effects of Australian fires.
B 13. D 14. D 15. A
根据文章第一段“This season, the bushfires in Australia have burned more than 12.35 million acres of land. At least 25 people have been killed and 2000 homes destroyed.”(这个季节,澳大利亚的森林大火已经烧毁了超过1235万英亩的土地。
根据文章第二段“Zeke Hausfather, an energy systems analyst and climate researcher at Berkeley Earth, said warmer temperatures and extreme weather have made Australia more susceptible to fires and increased the length of the fire season(加州大学伯克利分校地球分校的能源系统分析师和气候研究员泽克·豪萨福尔说气温升高和极端天气使澳大利亚更susceptible to火灾并延长了高火险季节的持续时间。)” 影响”,与 D项“Very likely to be influenced by(很容易受……的影响)”意思相近。故选D项。.
    【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“He said that once an area experiences drought conditions for two months or more, it increases the risk of fires catching and spreading. Those changing weather patterns due to global warming make drought events longer.(他说,一旦一个地区经历了两个月或更长时间的干旱,它就会增加火灾和火灾蔓延的风险。那些由于全球变暖而改变的天气使得干旱持续的时间更长。)”可推断全球气候变暖导致干旱或延长干旱时间,增加火灾风险及火灾蔓延风险,所以全球变暖是森林大火的根本原因。故选D项。
    【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Climate experts stress that climate change is not the only factor in the severity of wildfires. How land is managed can also impact the amount of fuel available for fires. (气候专家强调气候变化不是野火严重的唯一因素。土地的管理方式也会影响火灾可用燃料的数量。)”以及“Practices like controlled burns and other factors can impact the risk to people and property, such as warning systems and the type of development in a given area.(诸如控制性燃烧和其他因素等做法可能会影响火灾对人和财产的风险,如预警系统和特定地区的开发类型。)”及“Changing those policies has great potential to limit future damage from wildfires along with changes to how fire management resources are dispatched(派遣)(改变这些政策同时改变消防管理资源的分配方式有很大的降低未来野火造成损害的潜力。)” 故选A项。
Three Things We Must Do to Tackle Climate Change
With world leaders meeting at the international climate change conference this August in Glasgow to discuss urgent global action to meet one of the greatest challenges, many people still don’t know what must be done. ____16____ However, the good news we get from the report is that it is not too late to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, if we respond rapidly and decisively. But how? It comes down to the following three things.
Stop using fossil fuels gradually. ____17____ That means no exploration, no new wells, mines, pipelines, or power plants. We already have a vast amount of fossil fuel infrastructure(基础设施), and it will take decades to end its use.
____18____ Sun and wind are the fastest-growing new sources of energy we have. Their costs have fallen sharply, making them the least expensive options and encouraging the adoption of clean energy in more and more locations.
Protect the world’s forests. Forests all over the world currently absorb about a third of the carbon dioxide our activities send out to the atmosphere. ____19____ And this must stop. To meet the planet’s growing food needs, experts urge improved management practices on already-cleared land rather than clearing new land.
Finally, it is high time that we joined hands to protect the only home we have. If so, we can take on the challenge as we would whatever the difficulty is. ____20____ The three actions we suggest are essential for success.
    A. Boost the development of new technology.
    B. Speed up the use of clean, renewable energy.
    C. The alarming messages released urged us to change our lifestyle.
    D. To achieve this, we must allow no new development of coal, oil and gas.
    E. The “code red” report from the conference greatly shocked many people.
    F. We are on a mission to save planet Earth, its people and its natural wonders.
    G. Tropical (热带)forests are especially at risk and still being cleared for agricultural uses.
E 17. D 18. B 19. G 20. F
根据空后“However, the good news we get from the report is that it is not too late to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, if we respond rapidly and decisively. But how? It comes down to the following three things.(然而,我们从报告中得到的好消息是,如果我们迅速果断地做出反应,避免气候变化的最严重影响还为时不晚。)”

    根据本段的第一句话“Protect the world’s forests. (保护世界森林。)”和空后“And this must stop. (这必须停止。)”可知,保护森林非常重要,而空后的this应该指代对森林破坏这件事。G项“热带森林面临的风险尤其大,仍在为农业用途而砍伐。”为this指代的内容,符合语境。故选G。
    【20题详解】
根据本段第一句话“Finally, it is high time that we joined hands to protect the only home we have. (最后,是我们携手保护我们唯一的家园的时候了。)”可知,作者在最后号召大家行动起来保护我们唯一的家园,我们要去拯救地球,上文建议的三个行动对成功至关重要。F项“我们的使命是拯救地球、地球上的人民和地球上的自然奇观。”符合语境。故选F。

    57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Recently I graduated from high school and as a gift I received a huge hunch of flowers, 40 to be exact! I had so many that I didn't know what to do with them. The next weekend my niece and nephew, Sue and Mike, aged 6 and 7, came and suddenly I had an idea. I might let them give out these flowers to people they met on the street, and in this way they could learn how to be friendly to others. So I told them about my plan and explained that these flowers would make people feel happy and smile. They loved the idea and were eager to have a try. So at once we took every single flower and tied a smile card to it. We then went to the street with the flowers.
The first flower went to a policeman. As soon as she saw the policeman, my niece ran up to him and handed him a flower. His smile was so big, but hers was even bigger!
In no time, we neared the end of our flowers. It was lunch time and we went to Subway for lunch. There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, who was really excited to receive the flower. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big chocolate cookies! She said the chocolate cookies were for them and that she really liked the flower! As they ate the cookies, my niece and nephew looked at me with the biggest smiles I had ever seen.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

It turned out to be a great day for us.
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With just one flower left, I said it should be given to the person who needed it most. Just then, my nephew caught sight of an old woman in a wheelchair nearby. “I think she’s the very person for the flower. She lives a hard life because of bad health. She needs smiles most,” said my nephew. With these words, my nephew, followed by my niece, took the flower up to her. You can imagine how happy the old woman looked! She smiled, and gave each of the kids a big kiss.
It turned out to be a great day for us. We spread a lot of smiles by giving out flowers, and received a lot of smiles in return. The flowers not only made us feel good about ourselves, but also made 40 other people feel happy. I feel there is nothing more enjoyable than being friendly to people. Meanwhile, the kids learned an important lesson in the process. In fact, they can’t wait until next time they have such a chance again. They want to give out more flowers!
