Four Best Outdoor Winter Activities Around the Midwest
Don’t let winter freeze you out. When the outside ices over, Midwesterners should take advantage of it. Look through our list and find the season’s coolest activities.
Walk on (Not) Thin Ice, Wisconsin
Once you walk, the ice talks, or rather, sings. When you step onto a frozen lake (remember, the ice must be at least 4 inches thick), it responds with different sounds. Even in the stillness of winters, the lake reminds you it’s still here—and still alive.
Let It Go, Minnesota
To all Queen Elsa’s fans: Your palaces are waiting for you. Ice artists here have carved walk-through castles with underground passages, slides and frozen fountains looking like natural formations. At night, colorful LEDs light up the ice. Take a seat on an ice throne—the cold never bothers you anyway.
Sled(乘雪橇) like an Olympian, Muskegon, Michigan
Live out your Beijing 2022 fantasies at the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park. Three-time Olympian Frank Masley designed an 850-foot long track where green hands are accepted. Sleds can reach speeds of up to 30 mph on it. Come and enjoy this unique experience!
Fly a Kite, Clear Lake, Iowa
In the clear blue sky, a school of fish is streaming in the wind, tailed by a hungry, fierce dragon. Look up, and you’re floating in a fantasy world. Look down, and you realize you’re grounded—on solid ice. Clear Lake’s Color the Wind kite festival began about 20 years ago to brighten up dull winter days.
1. What do Activities 1 and 4 have in common?
A. They feature the beauty of winter. B. They make the lake more attractive.
C. They are done on the ice. D. They include a special festival.
2. Where can people enjoy ice sculptures(雕塑)?
A. In Minnesota. B. In Wisconsin. C. In lowa D. In Michigan.
3. What can people do at the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic (流行病), the social distancing commands separated family members from each other in 2020. However, it also resulted in some lifelong friendships between people who would have otherwise never met.
The unlikely friendship between 99-year-old Mary and her two-year-old neighbor, Benjamin began in May 2020. The lockdown was particularly hard for Mary, who has been living alone since her husband passed away 37 years ago. Her other family members are in other states. The 99-year-old spent her days watching television game shows. Benjamin, a then one-year-old who lived next door, was also stuck at home and unable to play with kids of his age.
The unusual friendship developed gradually. At first, Mary would wave at Benjamin from her window whenever she saw the young boy in the yard. Then, she began adventuring outside to greet him in person. The routine eventually expanded to daily gatherings by the fence that separated the two homes. The unlikely pair even invented a socially distanced game that Mary calls cane (手杖) ball. “I came out of the house one morning, and he threw his ball toward the fence,” she said. “I got my cane, and I reached over the fence and hit the ball toward him, and he’d throw it back. That’s how it started.”
When the weather turned cold, the two were unable to meet in the yard as regularly. But Benjamin’s mother, Sarah, kept the friendship alive by often stopping by Mary’s house with the kid. The friendship between the two has developed even further since Mary got vaccinated (接种疫苗) earlier this year. The two give each other hi-fives across the fence and often sit outside Mary’s house. This spring, Mary and Benjamin gifted each other with their favorite.
Benjamin now goes to daycare three times a week. But he still regularly makes time to visit his best friend who he refers to as “Mimi”. “Friendship really knows no boundaries,” Sarah said. “Certainly, you wouldn’t guess that a 99-year-old and a 2-year-old would be friends, but they can be. And they both get a lot out of it.”
4. What can we learn about Mary and Benjamin from paragraph 2?
A. They became neighbors. B. They were stuck at home.
C. They had to live alone. D. They wandered around freely.
5. What promoted the friendship between Mary and Benjamin?
A. Waving each other. B. Chatting in the yard.
C. Watching game shows. D. Playing cane ball.
6. Why did Benjamin and his mother often stop by Mary’s house?
A. To bring her warm clothes. B. To sit outside Mary’s house.
C. To maintain the friendship. D. To exchange their gifts.
7. What message is delivered in the text?
A. The pandemic brings people heartwarming friendship.
B. The lockdown establishes some lifelong friendship.
C. A big age gap isn’t a barrier to developing a friendship.
D. The shutdown has resulted in great inconvenience.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. A

Beethoven is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians. He completed 722 musical works. Unfortunately, the master died while still working on his 10th Symphony (交响曲). Now, a team of musicians and scientists have used artificial intelligence (AI) to complete the artist’s final composition.
Dr. Matthias first came up with the idea to complete the composition in 2019. He thought it was an appropriate way to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday in December 2020. He began by enlisting an international team of music experts to help him with the giant task. They included music composer Walter and Dr. Ahmed, the creator of an innovative AI technology for the art market.
Ahmed and his colleagues started the process by familiarizing the AI software initially with a broad range of classical music, and then, narrowed it to just Beethoven’s work. Meanwhile, Walter and his group tried to interpret the rough drafts and the handful of notes that detailed Beethoven’s plans for the 10th Symphony.
The team then began the slow and careful task of feeding the AI software musical notes from the unfinished composition. To stay true to Beethoven’s original composition, Ahmed’s team sent Walter hundreds of AI-generated musical note variations every evening. Walter would listen to them and then select the one that he thought was closest to what the artist would have written. The AI team would add the music and rerun the software to generate the next suggestions. And piece by piece, the team was able to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony!
The composition was firstly released on October 9, 2021. Not surprisingly, it caused some controversy (争议). Critics believe technology should not be used to replicate the human creative process. Ahmed and his team agree with their opinions and say their AI software is not out to replace humans—it is just a tool to help artists to express themselves in new ways.
8. What is the purpose of the writer in writing paragraph 1?
A. To voice his greatest respect for Beethoven.
B. To compare traditional music and AI music.
C. To present the team of music experts’ hard work.
D. To introduce an innovative method to create music.
9. Which can be used to best describe the team’s work?
A. Inspiring. B. Steady. C. Challenging. D. Boring.
10. What does the underlined word “replicate” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Question. B. Copy. C. Direct. D. Speed.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Beethoven’s 10 Symphonies Is Eventually Staged
B. AI Helps Complete Beethoven’s Unfinished Symphony
C. A Team of Experts Conduct a Mission Impossible
D. A Controversial Way Successfully Interprets Beethoven’s Music
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. B

On August 8, 2021, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its first assessment of climate science since 2013. The news was not good. The report stated that this past decade was the hottest in 125,000 years and that the atmospheric carbon levels are the highest in at least 2 million years. Glaciers are melting faster than any time in over 2,000 years, and ocean levels are rising at twice the rate since 2006.
At the current pace, the researchers expect global temperatures to rise by at least 1.5°, compared to pre-industrial levels, within the next 20 years. The temperature increases will result in significant changes to the planet’s water cycle. Areas that currently receive a lot of rain will get significantly more, while dry regions will become increasingly likely to droughts.
The IPCC’s findings come as no surprise to the millions of people worldwide currently feeling the impacts of climate-related disasters. America and many European countries are battling wildfires. Meanwhile, an unprecedented (史无前例的) week-long storm in July 2021 caused flash floods and mudslides in Western Europe. Climate change is even impacting the Earths coldest and most remote regions which experienced the first rainfall event in recorded history.
The situation may sound hopeless. However, many experts believe it is still not too late to turn things around, if we all act now. While governments need to do their share by introducing and obey stricter carbon emission laws, individuals can also help. Driving less, conserving water, and reducing electricity usage are some great ways to start. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle will help conserve natural resources and energy. It will also save you and your community. Be sure to start doing your part to save our beautiful home today!
12. Why did IPCC release its first assessment of climate science?
A. To appeal to people to reduce carbon levels.
B. To state the earth’s temperature hits a record high.
C. To inform readers climate change is severe.
D. To report ocean levels are rising higher.
13. What may lead to great changes to the planet’s water cycle?
A. The rise of global temperatures. B. The fast development of industry.
C The heavy rainfall of the earth. D. The terrible droughts in dry regions.
14. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Effects of climate change. B. Facts of rainfall disasters.
C. Losses caused by natural disasters. D. Weather phenomena in many regions.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Fighting against climate change is relatively simple.
B. Stricter carbon emission laws has been tightened up.
C. The author is opposed to consuming natural resources.
D. The author urges immediate action on climate change.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. A 15. D

Tricks to Stay Efficient Even When I Feel Like Garbage
People always try to take full advantage of those times when feeling highly motivated or inspired. ___16___ And staying efficient means having a plan for working well even when not feeling your best. Here are some principles.
Optimize(最优化) for energy
___17___ As an editor, the most important is to write a high-quality article. Occasionally I’m extremely exhausted but have to “push through”. It only leads to low-quality work. ___18___ For example, although calling up a friend to chat isn’t super “important”, it’s energizing. I spend an hour not writing, but the energy I get from the call will make up for it and then some.
___19___
Many people feel like garbage because they’re too hard on themselves. I’m often going to feel unmotivated but I don’t beat myself up for little mistakes. I remind myself frequently that feeling bad is not a big deal. The secret to my consistent efficiency is: When times are tough, treat yourself like you treat a friend.
Write down the one thing
Sometimes I have lots of things to do, but it can be hard to find what I really need to be working on. ___20___ But we don’t always feel motivated-even to work on things we enjoy. And when I’m not feeling as energetic as I’m used to, I have one very simple trick: I write down my one thing. My one thing is the answer to this question: At the end of the day, if I did..., I would be proud of myself.
A. Be merciful to yourself.
B. Keep away from the garbage.
C. But we all feel like garbage sometimes.
D. I always arrange assignments in order of importance.
E. Normally, I rely on motivation to get me through this dilemma.
F. Therefore, optimizing for energy shows you can create motivation.
G. The better choice is to re-rank tasks according to the energy they provide.
【答案】16. C 17. D 18. G 19. A 20. E
【解析】
【分析】本文是一篇说明文,主要是介绍在兴致不高的时候如何保持高效。
【16题详解】
根据空前“People always try to take full advantage of those times when feeling highly motivated or inspired.”(当人们感到高度积极或者有动力时,总是努力充分利用时间)和空后“And staying efficient means having a plan for working well even when not feeling your best.”(保持高效意味着即使感觉不好时也要对工作有一个计划)可知空前是说感觉好时工作积极,空后则说是感觉不好时也要对工作有一个计划,前后相反情况,所以空处需要表转折的句子,且与空后的not feeling your best.相对应,结合选项,C项But we all feel like garbage sometimes.(但是有时我们感觉自己像垃圾。)符合。故选C。
【17题详解】
根据空后的“As an editor, the most important is to write a high-quality article.”(作为一个作者,最重要的是要写出高质量的作品。)可知,作者做事情是以重要性为准则来安排。结合选项,D项I always arrange assignments in order of importance.(我总是按照事情重要性来安排工作的。)符合。故选D。
【18题详解】
根据空前“Occasionally I’m extremely exhausted but have to “push through”. It only leads to low-quality work.”(偶尔我也会精疲力竭但不得不强力推行坚持工作,但只会导致低质量的工作。)及空后作者举了一个例子可知,空处应该是作者处理这种感觉不好的时候的方法 ,结合选项,G项The better choice is to re-rank tasks according to the energy they provide.(最好的选择是根据他们可以提供的能量来安排任务。)符合。故选G。
【19题详解】
根据空后“Many people feel like garbage because they’re too hard on themselves.”(许多人感觉像垃圾是因为他们对自己太苛刻了。)及空处属于小标题,需要祈使句,可推出空处应该是对自己好一点一个祈使句,结合选项,A项Be merciful to yourself.(对自己仁慈一点。)符合,故选A。
【20题详解】
根据空前“Sometimes I have lots of things to do, but it can be hard to find what I really need to be working on.”(有时我会有很多事情要做,但也很难找到我真正地需要做的)可知,作者有时会陷入这种困境,所以空处应该是怎么处理这种困境,结合选项,E项Normally, I rely on motivation to get me through this dilemma.(通常情况我靠动机来让自己渡过难关。)符合,故选E。

Sewing is one of my favourite courses, where I gained a fundamental glimpse of essential life skills such as sewing a button and knitting a scarf. It was surely a rewarding experience, not only enriching our after-school life but also helping us form the good habit of labouring.

When school was over, the day was fading and it started to drizzle(毛毛雨). I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again: a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste, a weekend at home. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy, but something like dismay(沮丧). I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking(嘎吱作响) against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up for the weekend, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the numerous cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache once in a while. She just looks a homely middle-aged housewife. Being a practitioner of DIY, she knits most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile and reply in a half joking manner: homemade.
I couldn’t remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been much fun riding with mom. But just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.

Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Today she showed up in a raincoat. Seeing her standing in the heavy rain with all the body wet, I finally could not control myself and shouted at her, “Why do you look so flustered? I don’t need you to take me home. I feel ashamed to have a mother like you!” Suddenly, Mom was shocked and silent. Maybe, she had never thought that I would have that feeling of her appearance and our home condition. She said nothing and just covered the raincoat on me. I pushed it away wildly.
Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in. With a smile, she said, “Dear son, I’m trying my best to earn our living, and I’m sure that if we work harder, we will get whatever we want in the future.” Hearing her words, I felt embarrassed. I thought of the time when she knitted in the deep night and cooked for me in the early morning. Yes, she had always been doing whatever she could to make me live well. But I was still unsatisfied. I had known that if I wanted to get what others had, I should spare no efforts to study hard and get it by myself.
