    B. Reciting more English sentences.
    C. Remembering words as many as possible.
A 18. C 19. C 20. A
M: Hello! I’m the winner of the English Contest for college students, Bob. Today I’d like to share my habits of learning English. First, grasp three words for a day. Look up the three words wherever you can. There’s a thing called wholedic.com, where I often look up the words. Look up the meanings, and then write a sentence using the word. Besides, use that word more in your English speaking during the day. Another of the things that I do is I strongly recommend that students find something to read in English every day for at least 15 minutes. And the idea is to read it word for word. And then speak it aloud as you’re reading it. And this is the way that we can develop better grammar and listening comprehension. So I typically read about 40 to 50 articles every day. Do you know how many words are in English? A million? Yeah. And it’s really because it’s such a worldwide language. Do you need to learn all of them? No. Just learn as many as you can or at least the ones you meet more than once. In short, the principle is to keep reading and learning. Single method or only a short period is less effective.

Australia was always a country I wanted to visit, so I saved up some money and booked a flight to go traveling up the east coast of Australia at the end of my work in London.
The flight made me realize exactly how far away Australia is from home. I spent 10 hours traveling on a plane from London to Hong Kong, then a further 8 hours to Sydney, my first stop in Australia. The flight went quite quickly though, since there were lots of films to watch to keep me amused. It was strange when I arrived because everything was upside down over there; it was the start of winter (in May)! It also took me a while to get used to the time difference as I was always one day ahead of all my friends and family back home.
The country is truly beautiful, full of amazing views and wildlife you wouldn’t find anywhere else in the world. One of my experiences of my trip was seeing koalas closely in Brisbane—there were koalas everywhere sleeping in the trees and I even got the chance to hold one. There was also big grassland full of kangaroos that we were allowed to feed. They were really smart and very friendly.
The highlight of my trip was snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, as the water was amazingly clear with a beautiful shade of blue. I also got the chance to see some special creatures underwater, such as sea turtles and even a shark.
Australia is an amazing country and worth visiting one day if you ever get the chance.
    24. What did the author think of the journey on the plane?
    A. Time-wasting. B. Disappointing. C. Dangerous. D. Pleasant.
    25. How did the author feel when he reached Sydney?
    A. Tired. B. Excited. C. Unfamiliar. D. Upset.
    26. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
    A. Unique wild animals living in Australia. B. Beautiful natural landscape in Brisbane.
    C. Wonderful experiences with wild animals. D. Exciting sports during the trip in Australia.
    27. What does the underlined word “snorkeling” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Fishing on the sea. B. Swimming underwater.
    C. Watching animal shows. D. Feeding turtles and sharks.
D 25. C 26. A 27. B

根据第二段“It was strange when I arrived because everything was upside down over there; (当我到达时它很陌生,因为那里的一切都颠倒了)”可知,作者刚到悉尼时感觉不熟悉。
根据第三段“The country is truly beautiful, full of amazing views and wildlife you wouldn’t find anywhere else in the world.(这个国家真地很美,到处都是令人惊叹的景色和野生动物,你在世界上任何地方都找不到)”以及段落内容可知,本段主要介绍了澳大利亚的景色和特有的野生动物。故选A。
根据第四段“The highlight of my trip was snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, as the water was amazingly clear with a beautiful shade of blue. I also got the chance to see some special creatures underwater, such as sea turtles and even a shark.(我旅行中最精彩的部分是在大堡礁snorkeling,那里的水非常清澈,带着美丽的蓝色阴影。我也有机会看到一些特殊的水下生物,如海龟,甚至鲨鱼)”可知,作者在大堡礁水下游泳时感受到了水下的风景和水下生物,推测划线词表示“潜水”,与swimming underwater同义。故选B。
    C
Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about it. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake.
Tea remained scarce(稀少的) and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it directly from China early in the 17th century.During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.
Tea had been drunk without milk in it at first, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never drink it without milk again. She was such a great lady that her friends thought they must copy everything she did.Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.
At first tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess(公爵夫人) found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o'clock stopped her getting“a sinking feeling”as she called it.She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so,teatime was born.
    28. What can we learn about the Britons from the text?
    A. They got expensive tea from India. B. They bought tea out of curiosity at first.
    C. They had tea until the early 17th century. D. They were the first to drink tea in Europe.
    29. When did tea become a popular drink in Britain?
    A. In the 17th century. B. In the early 18th century.
    C. In the late 18th century. D. In the 19th century.
    30. The underlined words“this habit”in Paragraph 3 refer to drinking tea________.
    A. after dinner B. in the afternoon
    C. with milk in it D. without milk in it
    31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
    A. The history of tea. B. The birth of teatime.
    C. The ways of making tea. D. The habit of drinking tea.
B 29. A 30. C 31. B

根据第二段“Tea remained scarce(稀少的) and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it directly from China early in the 17th century.During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.(直到17世纪初东印度公司的船只开始从中国直接进口茶叶之前,英国的茶叶一直稀缺且价格昂贵。在接下来的几年里,大量的茶叶流入该国,导致茶叶价格下跌,许多人都买得起)”可知,在17世纪,因为大量的茶叶流入英国,人们开始能够买得起茶叶,这样茶叶就开始流行了起来。故选A。
根据划线单词所在句子的前三句话“Tea had been drunk without milk in it at first, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never drink it without milk again. She was such a great lady that her friends thought they must copy everything she did.(起初,人们喝的茶里没有牛奶,但有一天,一位名叫德塞维尼夫人的法国名媛决定看看加入牛奶后茶的味道。她觉得这太令人愉快了,再也不喝没有牛奶的茶了。她是一位伟大的女士,她的朋友们认为他们必须复制她所做的一切)”可知,人们开始模仿德塞维尼夫人的习惯,在茶里加入牛奶。所以this habit指“在茶里加牛奶”。故选C。
    【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“At first tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess(公爵夫人) found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o'clock stopped her getting“a sinking feeling”as she called it.She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so,teatime was born.(起初,人们通常在晚上晚饭后喝茶。没有人想过下午喝茶,直到一位公爵夫人发现,三四点钟的一杯茶和一块蛋糕阻止了她所谓的“下沉感”。她邀请她的朋友和她一起吃这顿新的饭,于是,teatime诞生了)”可知,最后一段主要介绍了“下午茶时间”是如何开始的。故选B。
    D
Companies which sell liquids like drinks or shampoo depend on bottles made of plastic or glass for their packaging. But as customers have become more worried about the environment, many companies have begun working to develop paper bottles.
Paper bottles have many advantages. They are easy to recycle and weigh less than glass or plastic bottles, meaning they’ll require less energy to produce and to move around.
A company called Paboco has been working with many large companies to develop paper bottles. Clearly, one of the biggest challenges is keeping a paper bottle from leaking (渗漏). Therefore, many companies are lining their bottles with a thin sheet of plastic. Though this liner can be taken away and recycled, many recycling programs don’t have the right machines to deal with these liners.
A Danish beer company called Carlsberg is working with Paboco on a paper bottle called the “Green Fiber Bottle”. In the future the company hopes to use a “bio-plastic” that will break down naturally over time. A company named Diageo has just announced the first paper bottle that’s completely plastic-free. Instead of a plastic liner, a non-plastic coating will be used on the inside of the bottles. This should make the bottle fully recyclable. Diageo says they’ll use the bottle with their whiskey in 2023.
However, there’s still lots of testing to be done before paper bottles can replace glass or plastic bottles. Companies will need to see how long liquids can be stored in the bottles, and make sure the bottles don’t influence the taste. But with so many companies working toward the same goal, it’s likely that we can expect to see paper bottles on store shelves in the near future.
    32. What forces many companies to develop paper bottles?
    A. The cost of making plastic or glass bottles.
    B. The customers’ caring about the environment.
    C. The energy needed to produce ordinary bottles.
    D. The difficulty in shaping the plastic or glass bottles.
    33. Why are plastic liners used inside the bottles?
    A. To make them easy to recycle. B. To make bottles reusable.
    C. To prevent liquid from escaping. D. To lower the production cost.
    34. What can we infer about the making of paper bottles?
    A. Non-plastic coatings may be hard to recycle.
    B. Paper bottles can’t go without a plastic liner.
    C. There’s still a long way to go to reach the goal.
    D. Not all paper bottles are better than glass bottles.
    35. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. Traditional Bottles or Paper Bottles
    B. Companies Work to Develop Paper Bottles
    C. Paper Bottles Are Getting Increasingly Popular
    D. Advantages and Disadvantages of Paper Bottles
B 33. C 34. C 35. B

Last Saturday David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yelling: “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs. Brown in middle school. After he entered middle school David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed.
But one day it all changed. That day, in an English writing class, Mrs. Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He had never expected to be praised. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote another short story and gave it to Mrs. Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short dories and asked Mrs. Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs. Brown always gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published, becoming famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs. Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy.

The mother was ashamed when she heard that.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son a stupid boy, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make some difference to the boy.
