“Cook for yourself like you would for a guest.” This advice comes from Claire Lower in an article for Lifehacker. It seems to be good advice for people who live alone and can’t be bothered to cook delicious food when there’s no one else to enjoy it. Yes, they can gorge(狼吞虎咽) themselves on popcorn and call it a night without fear of judgment, but Lower argues that this “wears on the soul” over time.
Every meal is a chance to work on good table manners, including the art of dinner conversation, eating tidily, and using cutlery (餐具) properly. You can try to use nice dishes and real glasses in order to create an appealing atmosphere that encourages everyone to take the meal more seriously.
At the same time, it is a parental duty to cook a range of interesting and delicious meals to help train children for the unavoidable day when they actually are at a fancy restaurant or a friend’s house and faced with a strange soup, an unusual salad, or an unrecognizable main course. That way, they’ll know what to do and how to do it politely.
Eating gives shape and meaning to our days, not to mention flavour, nutrition and energy. Just as boring, repetitive (重复的) meals wear on the soul, delicious ones can bring happiness, hopefulness, and peace. So, don’t give up on cooking well, whether it’s just for you or for a group of children, even if it’s just a few times a week and the dishes are simple. It does get easier and better, and you’ll learn to look forward to it.
24. What can we infer from paragraph 1?
A. Food should be shared with friends. B. Life without delicious food is boring.
C. Eating slowly is beneficial to our health. D. Cooking well means being kind to ourselves.
25. How do children benefit from parents bringing them various meals?
A. They will be good at cooking. B. They could learn to be grateful.
C. They will behave politely at table. D. They could enjoy their whole life.
26. What does the author intend to do at last?
A. To advise people to enjoy life. B. To call on people to value cooking.
C. To stress the importance of regular diets. D. To show the way of cooking delicious meals.
27. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Cook Like You mean It. B. Have Meals on Time.
C. Learning to Cook Is a Very Simple Thing. D. Taking Meals Seriously Is Everyone’s Duty.

The English language has many expressions that describe a fast-moving event. Some expressions relate to body movements. We say something happens in the blink of an eye or in a heartbeat. Other expressions are related to the world of nature.
For example, there is an expression related to velocity involving an animal. You might think the creature will be a big cat, such as a lion or maybe even a small but speedy animal, such as a hare (野兔). But it is none of them. The expression today involves sheep—baby lambs to be exact.
Lambs are cute, but they are not really known for their lightning speed. Our expression is about a specific part of the animal—its tail. Lambs can shake their tails very fast. And when something happens quickly, we say it happens in “two shakes of a lamb’s tail”. Here is an example, “I’m going to the store I’ll be back in two shakes of a lamb’s tail!” This expression is a cuter and more descriptive way of saying “quickly”. Maybe instead of sending a text message with the letters BRB (be right back), we could use the image of a lamb shaking its tail.
Being cute like a lamb may be fun, but it has its drawbacks. Cute things are often not taken seriously. And that is why Americans rarely use “two shakes of a lamb’s tail” in a serious situation. For example, if a person gets hit by a car, people would say something like “Help is on the way!” Generally speaking, an emergency is not a good time to use cute animal expressions.
28. What does the underlined word “velocity” (paragraph 2) probably mean?
A. language B. speed C. eating habits D. body parts
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The development of the expression. B. The origin and usage of the expression.
C. The reason of lambs’ fast movement. D. The characteristics of lambs’ behavior.
30. Which is the proper use of the expression?
A. I’ll live in the big city in two shakes of a lamb’s tail!
B. Firefighters rescued the boy in two shakes of a lamb’s tail!
C. I’ll be back from the restaurant in two shakes of a lamb’s tail!
D. Medical workers arrived on the scene in two shakes of a lamb’s tail!
31. What is the purpose of the author writing this article?
A. To stress the advantages of lambs.
B. To describe the behavior of lambs.
C. To show the features of spoken language.
D. To introduce an expression concerning lambs.

The girl on the pink flamingo-shaped raft was floating away quickly, screaming as her father yelled for a lifeguard who didn’t appear. Two brothers who were nearby had expected to spend a relaxing afternoon. Before they could think about it, they were jumping into the sea and swimming toward the girl as fast as they could during a rescue that took almost an hour.
In the cold, sometimes choppy(波涛汹涌的) water, they raced toward the girl in the distance. They had a moment of panic when the girl who was still far away fell off the raft and briefly dipped under the water, then popped back up. They swam for about 25 minutes until they were close enough to yell at her that she would be okay and that they would take her back to the shore.
When they finally reached her, they helped keep her head above water and took turns swimming on their backs with the girl on their chests as they made their way against the current back to shore. Then the brothers took the girl into a beach tent to protect her from the elements(恶劣的天气). Tourists rushed to cover her in layers of towels. As the brothers recovered on the beach after the rescue, they felt the pressure that had built up in their chests slowly fade away. A rescue service crew and paramedics (医护人员) arrived a few minutes later and took the girl to a hospital. She later made a full recovery.
The girl’s family visited the brothers at the house where they were staying to thank them. “It was emotional. It was extremely rewarding once we got to her,” the brothers said. “Seeing her jump around and kiss her mom, that was actually amazing.”
32. According to paragraph l, what happened to the girl?
A. She lost her pink raft. B. She floated far on the sea.
C. She swam in the deep ocean. D. She asked the lifeguard for help.
33. Why did the brothers have a moment of panic?
A. The girl was in great danger. B. They dipped under the water.
C. The raft was damaged by a big wave. D. The water was too choppy to swim in.
34. What did the brothers do first when they got back to shore?
A. They lay on the beach to recover. B. They brought the girl to a hospital.
C. They moved the girl into a beach tent. D. They covered the girl in layers of towels.
35. Which section of a magazine is this text probably taken from?
A. Sad stories B. Survival stories C. Love stories D. Adventure stories
We all have read those amazing stories where we feel as if we are taking part in the action: the weapons in our hands, the eyes filled with tears, and magic circling through the land. 36 , however. Stories can be found anywhere in imaginary worlds or in your kitchen at home. Here are five suggestions to help you explore and write your own story.
Find inspiration everywhere
Some of the most interesting stories have come from a boy’s simple car ride back from school, or from a memorable dream a girl just can’t forget. 37 .
Live with your characters
The most interesting characters are those that seem to come to life. One of the greatest ways to have your characters jump from the pages is to imagine what it would be like to live with each of them for a day. 38 . How do they speak? How do they walk? What do they like to eat?
39 . .
Everyone writes differently, but outlining your story often helps your readers follow your story more easily. List your characters, the settings, the time, and the main story plot. What happens? When? In what order?
Open with excitement
Now it’s time to begin writing! 40 . Would you rather read a story that begins with “Hi, my name is John and I would like to tell you about my day.” Or “‘AHHHHHHH,’ John screamed. He was so late.”?
Write to describe something
Here is a common writing idea: show, don’t tell. For example, when you write, you don’t have to say: Marie was so sad. Often, a more effective way to convey her sadness would be like this: tears rolled down her face leaving dark, salty lines.
A. Outline your plot
B. Write down something special
C. Small details help you build them
D. Make up stories based on your daily life
E. Discover an inspiring moment to write about it
F. Work on the first sentence to attract your readers
G. They needn’t be adventurous with exciting events

On market days when the farmers around Darrowby brought their goods to the little town to sell, I used to take a walk across the square to meet the farmers who gathered there to chat. One of the farmers was telling me about his sick cow when he saw a little dog among the market stalls (货摊). The thing that made us notice the dog was that he was sitting up, paws dangling (悬垂), head pointing expectantly, begging, in front of the stall selling cakes and biscuits.
“Look at that little fellow,” the farmer said. “I wonder where he’s from.”
As he spoke, the stallholder threw the dog some bread which the animal ate eagerly, but when the man came round and stretched out a hand the little thing ran away.
I was standing there, trying to see where he had gone, when a young policeman came up to me.
“I’ve been watching that dog begging among the stalls all morning,” he said, “but I haven’t been able to get near him.”
“Yes, it’s strange. You can see he’s friendly, but he’s also afraid. I wonder who owns him.”
“I think he’s a stray (无主的宠物), Mr. Herriot. I know just about all the dogs around here. But this one is a stranger to me.”
I nodded. “I’m sure you’re right. Anything could have happened to him. He could have been ill-treated by somebody and run away, or he could have been dumped from a car.”
“Yes,” the policeman replied, “I don’t know how anybody can leave a helpless animal to fend for (照料) itself like that. I’ve had a few tries at catching him, but it’s no good.”
A week passed before I met the policeman again in the market.
“Have you caught the dog, sir?” I asked.
The policeman looked very serious. “Yes,” he replied, “I’m afraid he’s been arrested.”
“Arrested?” I said in astonishment. “What do you mean?”
“Well,” he said, “it seems that it’s against the law for a dog to go begging in the market square.”
“I still don’t know what this is all about,” I said. “Where is he now?”
“I’ll take you to him,” the policeman replied.

We walked a short way along the road to a pretty cottage. We went inside and there, in the sitting room, sleeping in a big new doggy bed was my little friend. Two small girls were sitting by his side, touching his head softly. The policeman threw back his head and laughed. “I’ve just been kidding you, Mr. Herriot. This is my house and I’ve taken him as a pet for my two daughters. They’ve been wanting a dog for some time and I thought he’d be just right for them.”
A wave of relief swept over me. “Well, that’s wonderful,” I said. I looked at his kind face gratefully. I laughed too. I didn’t mind having the joke played on me because, funny or not, he would be a kind master for my doggy friend. I lifted the dog from his bed. The small girls held up a beautiful new red collar with a lead to match. Their new pet liked the look of them because he sat up in that position I remembered so well, his paws dangling, his face looking up eagerly. The begging dog had found a home at last.

本文选自英国知名兽医作家James Herriot 的作品 Treasury for Children 中的一个小故事 The Market Square Dog.
Text 1
M: I love that song, “Dancing in the Street”. It takes me back to those two weeks on the beach in Portugal. (1)
W: Yes, it was beautiful, wasn’t it? I never thought once about the office.
Text 2
W: Did you see? The blue car was on the wrong side of the road.
M: That car’s red. Are you going color blind, confusing your reds, blues and pinks?
W: I don’t mean the one you’re pointing at. The one next to it. It’s the same color as ours. (2)
Text 3
W: Hey, I was walking through the mall and I saw a suit you might like.
M: My old one is fine. You can’t even see where it was repaired.
W: I don’t want to be seen at wedding with you in that suit. I’m taking you to the mall. (3)
Text 4
W: Is there a reason why you’re pointing at the ceiling?
M: It’s an exercise the doctor told me to do. My arm has been hurting quite badly. (4)
W: At first I thought you were waving at someone, holding your arm up like that.
Text 5
W: Hey! The last time I looked there were five biscuits in that box. Where did they all go?
M: Well, there were only two when I got here. I didn’t see anything wrong with having them.
W: Jake must have had the others. (5)
Text 6
M: For ten years, I’ve been embarrassed by my passport photo. I’m going to hire a photographer to take my next one. (6)
W: That’s crazy. It’ll cost you an arm and a leg. Have you tried one of those photo boxes you see at stations?
M: That’s what I did ten years ago, and I’ve had to live with that surprised expression ever since.
W: Mobile phone cameras are so much better than they used to be. Let me take some photos of you. (7)
M: You’re not a photographer.
W: I can take lots, until you find one you’re happy with. (7)
Text 7
W: The world looks very small from here.
M: And it is extremely beautiful.
W: I got used to seeing the curve of the Earth as a pilot, but I never saw anything as dramatic as this.
M: Look, we’re over the Sahara Desert. The scientists want pictures so they can see how far the sand is spreading. (8)
W: Be quick, and we’ll be over the continent of Europe soon and then into the night. I can already see part of the ocean is in the dark.
M: There are so many people down there, yet I can see no evidence of them. Their roads and homes are invisible.
W: Look over there — into the dark. That must be Dublin.
M: Ah yes, the city after dark. The lights look so pretty. (9)
Text 8
W: I can’t believe we finally get to meet! Your show was so amazing. (10)
M: Thanks so much. This was the last concert of our Asian tour, so we wanted to make it our absolute best performance. (10)
W: I’m so glad you came to Seoul. My friend and I waited for three hours to get in. (10)
M: You both must be huge fans. (10) Do you want to meet the rest of the band?
W: Are you joking? We’d love to!
M: They’ve been backstage for an hour just hanging out — come join us.
W: Wow, what a dream come true! How can we repay you?
M: We’ve been traveling so much, so we never get to see any special local things. Could you two show us some place in Seoul?
W: Absolutely. We know so many great restaurants and night markets. (12) But after putting on a concert for almost five hours, (11) you guys don’t want to sleep?
M: And miss the chance to experience Seoul? No way — let’s do it!
W: We can walk there now. Are you ready? (12)
M: Yes, (12) we’ll just grab our jackets.
Text 9
W: Hello, Flower Café. Can I help you?
M: Hello, I’d like to order something. Do you have any vegetarian(素食的) meals?
W: Yes, of course. We have a variety of vegetarian dishes.
M: Great! One of my co-workers is vegetarian(素食主义者). Is there a special today?
W: Yes, today’s specials are chips and mixed salad. (13) You can only choose one from the two.
M: Hmm… Chips are not very healthy. (13) Can you recommend some Korean food?
W: Well, we usually have apple soup and sweet noodles, but we’re out of apple soup today. (14) However, we have something American today.
M: Well, I’ll have mixed salad, sweet noodles, tomato soup and three sandwiches. Could you send them to my office before 12:00? (15) We get into work at 1:00 p.m. and have a regular meeting at 1:30 p.m., (16) so the time for lunch is tight(紧密的,时间紧张的).
W: No problem. Please tell me your name and address.
M: My name is Smith, and please send the meal to the 7th floor of People Square.
W: OK. See you.
Text 10
When I was young, my uncle would tell me about all of his experiences traveling around Europe by bicycle. Despite he completed several trips around the U.K., he never had the chance to accomplish his main goal of biking across Asia to China. Now, he has several injuries and a busy work schedule. He cannot ride with me, but he’s inspired me to complete this dream. (17) Furthermore, he has all of the knowledge of routes to help me ride across Asia. Once the summer starts, I’ll leave my house in France, my job as a restaurant server, and my friends and family to start my trip. (18) It’ll be sad to say goodbye to my parents and to quit my work, but this once-in-a-lifetime trip will make it all worth it. Riding through Europe during the summer will be comfortable and easy, so having company won’t be necessary. But I do worry about being in Central Asia during the winter, so I plan to have my cousin join me for a few months. There will be too much snow to bike anywhere, so we’ve arranged to get jobs there. Luckily, there are many popular ski fields, so getting seasonal work won’t be too difficult. (19) Once warmer weather comes, my cousin will fly home and I’ll continue my journey alone. I’ll continue my riding all the way to China, where my Dad will meet me in Beijing. Then we’ll ride together to complete the bicycle trip to Shanghai. (20)
