Born in Ghana, West Africa, in 1989, Freddy Adu has become one of the most promising young soccer players in the world. The next year, he became the youngest athlete ever to play in an all-star game, a match in which the best players from many professional teams compete.
As a child, Adu did what many children in Ghana love to do -play soccer. His mother recognized her son's talent and encouraged it by providing soccer balls, which were expensive for them. Since he had soccer balls, other children always came looking for him and played together.
Education was very important to Adu's mother, and she wasn't sure that her son could receive a good education in Ghana. So she tried hard and moved to Maryland, U. Do you know Roma people? They were called Gypsies (吉普赛人)by Europeans because they thought they came from Egypt (a country in Africa). About a thousand years ago, the Roma people left their homeland. They are known as nomads because for hundreds of years many of them have lived in large groups that travel from place to place. They have no real homeland.
Today, the Roma are now living all over the world. They have kept their language and many customs. For example, it's important for Roma to many other Roma. It's also a custom for parents to choose the person their children will marry. Roma people get married when they are young, sometimes even as young as 14.
Romany is the language of the Roma people, which was written down only recently. Because the Roma are nomadic and have moved all over the world, their language has developed in many different ways. It is sometimes hard for Roma in one part of the world to understand Roma from another part.
Roma music is famous all over the world, because many Roma throughout history have been musicians. Their music has influenced many other kinds of music, like classical and jazz.
Roma don’t usually assimilate(同化)into host countries. Over many centuries, governments
have forbidden them to marry each other, travel or wear their traditional bright clothes. They have their gold taken away from them-treasures from their parents and grandparents. They have been taken as slaves(奴隶), and have been forced to change their names.
But today, the Roma are finding ways to live in peace with others while keeping the treasures of their culture. “There's a will within us to continue to live as a people, " says George Kaslov, whose family arrived in New York from Russia a hundred years ago. “All the other ethnic(种族) groups who came to America assimilate gradually with time going; they lose their customs and language. But not the Roma. We hold out. "
23. What docs the underlined word “nomads" in the 1st paragraph mean?
A. People who lived centuries ago.
B. People who come from Rome.
C. People who have their own homeland.
D. People who move from place to place.
24. What can we infer about the Roma according to the passage?
A. Most of the Roma live in very unusual bouses.
B. Their language is endangered and may soon dic out.
C. Their culture is very different from other European cultures.
D. Most Roma get married cither when they arc very young or very old.
25. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell readers about an interesting culture.
B. To tell us why the Roma need our help.
C. To show us how all people are similar.
D. To ask people how to live in peace.
26. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Brave Roma Travelers
B. Famous Roma Music
C. The Roma: Past and Present
D. Changing Countries, Changing Cultures

How would you feel if someone decided to take away your park? Well, that's what's happening in my community. There’s a park that some people want to turn into a golf course(高尔夫球场). Let me tell you why I think it's a bad idea.
First, a park is meant to be for the whole community. Not everyone likes golf, so not everyone will get to use the park. This isn't fair. A community park should have open spaces for everyone to use.
Second, to make way for the golf course, lots of playground equipment(设施) will have to be moved or knocked down, which is a waste of time and money. It's also a waste of perfectly good equipment. The swings, for example, will probably just end up as litter.
Third, what about giving young people something to do? Not all kids are crazy about golf. At the moment, the park has a skating place and a playground. These attract lots of kids from the community. If you turn the park into a golf course, these kids won't have anywhere to go and they won't have anything to do. This means that they will stay at home and tum on a video game rather than get some exercise. It also means that they might be out on the street causing trouble. Wouldn't it be better to give them something to do at the park?
Finally, golf is expensive. Building a golf course and maintaining (维护)it costs a lot of money. Who is going to pay to maintain the golf course? What about those people who can't afford to join a golf club? That means that the golf course will only be available to people with lots of money.
Turning our park into a golf course is a bad idea. I suggest we have a community meeting before plans go any further.
27. Some people want to change the park into ___.
A. a golf club B. a golf course C. a parking place D. a skating place
28. According to Paragraph 4, having nowhere to go will make some children ___.
A. go to get some exercise
B. fall in love with golf
C. play video games at home
D. go to the street and make friends'
29. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?(P=Paragraph)
30. What is the writer's purpose in writing this passage?
A. To help carry out further plans.
B. To make the park more beautiful.
C. To encourage children to go skating.
D. To stop the golf course from being built.
