    Linda
I feel like my 13-year-old daughter and I are in this terrible cycle. I ask her to do something. She doesn’t do it, so I ask her again, and she says yes but does nothing. I ask her again, not so nicely. She says I am nagging (唠叨) her and gets angry. I have never been a naggy type person, but she’s turning me into one! How should I get out of the situation?

Just take a deep breath and always remember don’t start a debate or a lecture when you’re filled with anger, which will only hurt the situation. Sometimes kids finish what they need to do with a guilty look later.

According to my experience, such problems often begin with the fact that there is no agreement between parents and kids. I do suggest having some family meetings on a daily basis where all the family members can voice clearly expectations as well as give-and-take. Good luck!

In my view, you should do what your parents ask. It is said that “In life, when you make a mess, you are supposed to clean it up,” It’s their house you live and their money you spend! Take action right now!

Sounds like you’ve got lazybones at home? Here is how I solved my son’s problem. I told him I was offering paid service for some housework he can do. Every time I cleaned up his dishes, I charged him $5. Since my son is responsible for earning his own spending money, he quickly cleaned up.

Growing up in Tanzania, Abdulrazak Gurnah never thought of the possibility that he might one day be a writer. “I never thought about that,” he said in an interview. “It wasn’t something you could say as you were growing up, ‘I want to be a writer.’ “He thought he would become “something useful, like an engineer.”
Then, in 1964, something terrible forced Gurnah, at age 18, to run away to England. But the new life was not as good as he thought. Unhappy, poor, homesick, he began to write down things about home in his diary, and then longer writings, then stories about other people. Those small thoughts, the habit of writing to understand and record his own loneliness, finally became his first novel, then nine more — works that describe the pain of colonialism (殖民) and war. “The key thing that helps the whole experience of writing for me was this idea of losing your place in the world, “he said.
On October 7, 2021, Gurnah was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, widely seen as the most famous literary award in the world. His works talked about refugees(难民) and their living conditions. These books help us learn more about differences in culture and countries.
Gurnah, now 72, is the first black writer to receive the prize since Toni Morrison in 1993, and some people saw. his selection(当选) as a good thing after years of European and American Nobel winners. He is the first African to win the award in more than ten years.
    54. How many Gurnah’s works are mentioned in the article?
    A. Nine. B. Ten. C. Eighteen .D. Seventy-two.
    55. What plays the most important role in Gurnah’s writing experience?

    C. They show cultural differences. D. They introduce different awards.

Rock and roll came from jazz and the blues(布鲁斯) during the 1950s. One of the first rock and roll songs was Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock.” One of the first very famous rock and roll singers was Elvis Presley. Others were Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. Now almost every country has many rock and roll bands(乐队) and singers. Sometimes performers call their music by different names, like “rap” or “punk”. They sing and play mixtures(混合物) of rock and roll and talking or other sounds. Rap and punk both came from rock and roll, or rock music.
Some fans who like rock music think that classical music is boring. Many fans play rock music very loudly. They forget about the people who enjoy soft music. Loud music can make these people nervous. Many fans also like to dance to rock and roll.
When rock and roll was new, people had only records to play the music at home. After that, people used cassette(盒式磁带) tapes and records. Now we listen to music on compact discs(often called CDs). Most modern bands and singers pay companies to make videos of their songs. With videos, fans can see the performers at the same time that they listen to the music. Making a recording and the video that goes with it is very expensive.
    57. Rap and punk are both ________.
    A. country music B. folk C. classical music D. rock

    C. All the people in different countries like rock.
    D. Rock and roll only came from jazz.

Uncle Tom sang a song about angels and Heaven with Eva in the garden.
“Uncle Tom, sometimes I see those spirits,” said Eva. “They come to me in my sleep. I’m going there.” Eva pointed her finger to the sky and said, “To the bright spirits.”
Uncle Tom’s heart almost stopped. He looked at Eva. She didn’t look well: she was often tired, her breath was short, she had a cough, and she was getting very thin.
Miss Ophelia noticed this too, and she tried to tell Eva’s father, St Clare.
“Stop that!” St Clare said. “Don’t you see that the child is only growing up? It’s what happens to children of her age.”
    “But she has that cough!”
“That’s nothing. Maybe she has a little cold,” St Clare said.
Eva’s health got even worse. She became very weak and she could hardly leave the house, so St Clare sent her to the hospital.
In a week or two, it seemed that Eva’s health improved greatly. St Clare was happy and he was sure Eva would get better. But Miss Ophelia was not so sure, and neither was Eva herself. One afternoon, when St Clare called Eva to give her a present, “Papa, I am going to leave you soon.” said Eva, and she started crying.
“Oh, my dear!” said St Clare, “you’re just tired and a little weak because of the illness. You will be perfectly fine soon.”
“No, Papa,” said Eva, “I won’t get better. I am not sad. I’m sorry for you, Papa, and my friends, but I want to go!”
“Why do you want to go? Are you unhappy, Eva?”
“Oh, I feel sad for our slaves(奴隶): they are all good and kind to me. I wish, Papa, they were all free.”
“Don’t you think we treat them well?” said St Clare.
“But what will happen to them if anything happens to you? There are very few men like you, Papa. Some people buy the husbands but not the wives, some people buy the mothers and sell the children. What terrible things people do! Papa, isn’t there any way to make all slaves free?”
“Slavery is a very bad thing, but I don’t know what to do about it.” said St Clare. “Promise me that Uncle Tom will be free as soon as I’m asleep.” said Eva.

THE BEST WAY to deal with an emergency ( 紧急情况) is to avoid one, if you can. Part Four of our ongoing series on crime prevention focuses on protecting your home against burglary (入室偷盗). Sticky Fingers, an experienced burglar now serving a 6-year prison sentence. And He agreed to talk to our reporter.

Reporter: How do you break into a house?

Zhang Ping is my penfriend. He was born on August 23rd, 2004. His animal sign is the Monkey. Zhang Ping is
confident, clever and hard-working. In his free time, he likes listening to music at home and he has a gift for music.
However, he has some problems. He has too much homework to do every day. As a result, he has to stay up late to finish it. He has so little time for sleep that he feels much too stressed. What's worse, his parents are busy with their work. They don't have enough time for him. So he feels lonely from time to time.
At present, Zhang Ping hopes that he can achieve.a balance between his schoolwork and his hobbies. He dreams of becoming a successful musician when he grows up.
To help him realize his dream, I have some suggestions for him. Firstly, he should have more communication with his parents and friends. Secondly, it's better for him to manage his time wisely. In this way, he can have more time to enjoy himself.
