    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

    A

Not long ago, downtown San Francisco was a ghost town on weekends, a neighborhood only worth visiting when after-work crowds kept the area lively. But recently a new wave of hotels, restaurants, and bars has received this corner of the city —yes, during the weekends.

    Where to Stay

When Hotel G opened late last year, it offered travelers a much-needed fashionable, affordable alternative to downtown's old-school situation. The 151 rooms come with local art on the walls. Downstairs, the Klyde Café and Wine Bar and 398 Brasserie are full of chatty locals at night. It's a place where customers feel like that they've come home.

    Where to Eat

One of this year's best new restaurants lied just south of Market Street which once housed a lot of office buildings and busy lunch restaurants. Now, Mourad, has claimed it as a new dining destination, combining its best local food and special snacks from North Africa inside the repaired PacBell Building. A new lunch service on weekdays means more opportunities for dining on basteeya(a Moroccan(摩洛哥) dish).

Moving toward North Beach, Trestle is perfect for dinner, with a $35 three-course menu served in a clean dining room positioned near Jackson Spuare's growing nightlife clubs.

    What to Do

Across the street from Trestle, Doc Ricketts is the neighborhood's destination specializing in secret entertainment: every night features a different act, such as music, comedy, and burlesque(滑稽戏) in a historic theatre.

    Day Trip

If, come Sunday, you've had enough views, walk to the Ferry Building and catch the next ferry to Angel Island. From here, you can circle the island on foot or by bike, looking at 360-degree views of the city, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Oakland along the way. Finish with oysters and ceviche(牡蛎和酸橘汁腌鱼) at the Angel Island Café.

    36. What do you know about Hotel G?

    A. It replaces the downtown’s old hotels.

    C. customers can taste different kinds of dishes in Downtown San Francisco

    D. Trestle attracts more customers because of its favorable geographical position

    A. provides customers with a wide choice of entertainment

    B. is a must-to-be place for customers who like to perform

    C. is very far away from Trestle

    D. serves a three-course dish to customers

    39. If you tour Angel Island: you         .

    C. will have delicious food at a high price

    D. will feel disappointed after the tour

    B

My family moved from Taiwan to a small town in central Georgia, where my dad got a visa for his family and a job. I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my classmates, Santa Claus would come down one's chimney(烟囱) and put toys in one's stocking on Christmas Eve! What a great country, I thought. After I looked up “ stocking ” in my Chinese- English dictionary, I knew what I had to do.

On that fateful night, after everyone went to bed, I took my longest, cleanest knee sock and attached it to a nail already on the mantel(壁炉). Obviously, the previous owners of this house were no strangers to this Santa character.

I woke up before everyone else on Christmas Day and ran to the fireplace. To make a sob story short,I was hit with the reality of an empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I burst into tears, quickly took down the sock, and stuffed it in the back of a drawer. Santa was dead.

Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up, and I would amuse my friends with my poor-little-me story. I had to make it as funny as possible, or else I would cry.

How could I know that Santa was just late? Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, an older man with a white beard and a red cap knocked on my front door. He said, “I’ve been looking for you for twenty-five years. ”He handed me a bulging(鼓起的) red stocking, winked (眨眼), and left. On top of the stocking was a card. It. read:“For Becky—— I may have missed you in the second grade, but you've always lived in my heart. Santa.”

Through tear-blurred eyes, I recognized the handwriting of Jill, a friend I had met just two months before.I later discovered that the older man was her father. Jill had seen the hurt little girl underneath the thirty-something woman and decided to do something about it.

So now I believe that Santa is real. I don't mean the twinkle-eyed character of children's mythology(神话) or the creation of American holiday marketers. Those Santas annoy and sadden me. I believe in the Santa Claus that live inside good and thoughtful people. This Santa does not return to the North Pole after a crazy delivery but lives each day purposefully, really listens to friends, and then plans deliberate(故意的) acts of kindness.

    41. What does the underlined part “what I had to do” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

    A. a teenager                         B. a primary school student

    C. a middle-aged woman                D. a native American

    C

“Long time no see” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend's email, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.

Obviously, it is a word-by-word translation of the Chinese greetings! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too thrilled to believe her. Her words could not convince me at all. So I did a research on google.com. To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” This sentence has been widely used in emails, letters, newspapers, movies, books, or any other possible places. Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Ironically(讽刺地).if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.

Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan's movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan likes to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting(引用) Confucius(孔子). Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see” became a popular phrase in the real world with thanks to the popularity of these movies.

Some scholars refer to America as a huge pot of stew. All kinds of culture are mixed in the stew together, and they change the color and taste of each other. American Chinese, though a minority ethnic(少数民族的成员) group in the United States, is also contributing some changes to the stew! Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the stew.

You can have some other examples besides adoptions from Chinese, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Americans do not just simply borrow something from others. They will modify it and make it their own, so you would not be surprised to find a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant, or to buy a bottle of iced Chinese green tea with honey in a grocery store. Since Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way the American stew keeps adding richness and flavor.

    46. The writer himself felt surprised at         .

    A. the Chinglish expression “Long time no see”

    B. “Long time no see” used as standard American greeting.

    C. so many translation of the expressions used in America

    D. finding out Americans use the expression every day

    47. The word “ stew ” in the 4ﺎﻴ paragraph probably means          .

    A. mixed culture                           B. Confucius'words

    C.  a kind of cooked dish                D. American literature

    48. According to the passage it can be inferred that          .

    A. detectives translate the phrase “Long time no see”

    B. Hollywood made “Long time no see” popular

    C. the huge pot of stew greatly affects stall kinds of languages

    D. cultures can be changed in the huge pot of stew

    49. The main idea of the passage is that          .

    A. some Chinese expressions are introduced into English

    B. you'll not be surprised at a tofu in a restaurant in America

    C. some American expressions can be used in China

    D. American English keep being enriched from different cultures

    50. According to the passage, which of the following statements is not true?          .

    A. Informal language sometimes doesn't go with grammar and structure.

    B. Languages are always ruled by grammar and structure.

C.“Long time no see”has been used in at least four media mentioned in the passage.

    D. There are four languages mentioned to be adopted in the American stew.

    D

Some people hold the belief that a fun-filled, pain-free life equals happiness and it actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often things that lead to happiness involve some pain. As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, self-improvement. Ask a bachelor(单身汉) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most special features.

Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night's sleep or a three-day vacation. I don't know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.

Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating(解放的) realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can really increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do something to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy :we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

    51. According to the author ,a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because          .

    A. he finds more fun in dating than in marriage

    B. he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single

    C. he is unwilling to take on family responsibilities

    D. he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement

    52. Raising children, in the author's opinion, is           .

    A.a moral duty                             B. a thankless job

    C. a source of inevitable pain             D. a rewarding task

    53. From the last paragraph, we learn that envy sometimes comes from          .

    A. hatred          B. misunderstanding           C. prejudice        D. ignorance

    54. To understand what true happiness is one must          .

    A. be able to distinguish happiness from fun

    B. make every effort to liberate oneself from pain

    C. put up with pain under all circumstances

    D. have as much fun as possible during one's lifetime

    55. What is the author trying to tell us?          .

    A. It is important to make commitments.

    B. One must know how to attain happiness.

    C. Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain

    D. It is pain that leads to happiness.

    阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

David Carter stands outside of the University of Texas’ Austin campus every day, offering the same warm greeting to students who pass by. “Hello, my friend!”

Carter, now 68, is a beggar who once attended the school from 1972 to 1975. Then, he was involved in a crash and got serious injuries. He then had trouble with substance abuse and faced mental health challenges, leading him to drop out before completing his degree.

“If I could change one thing about my past life, I would have stayed in school,”Carter says. He says he knows an education can change someone's quality of life.

Carter had to beg in the last few years for a simple reason. “I’m always flat broke,” he said. While most people would walk right by a beggar, Ryan Chandler, a junior at the university, decided to stop and chat with Carter—and he learned a valuable lesson: You can't judge a book by its cover.

“A lot of UT students see them as criminal vagrants(无业游民;(尤指)乞丐) or think that they are dangerous or unfriendly, and that idea just isn't true,” says Chandler. Chandler got to know Carter and saw his potential. “He completed 87 hours of course credits, which is enough for a degree for most people, but he just never finished,” Chandler says.

The student wrote a blog post about his new friend, and luckily, the right people heard about Carter and stepped in to help. The University of Texas readmitted Carter as a student, and a kind person who used to be a student UT offered to pay for Carter's tuition.

“I want to be a student and I want to learn,” Carter said. Since the course requirements have changed, Carter is far from having the amount of credits needed to graduate. But his friend knows he's willing to take up the challenge. “He is capable, he is ready, and he is dedicated to this,” Chandler says.

    56. Why didn't Carter finish his study at UT more than 40 years ago?(no more than 10words)

    57. How does Carter feel as a dropout?(no more than 5 words)
