More than 40 years ago, my seventh grade English teacher by telling us that we were absolutely not allowed to read “The Catcher the Rye” because we weren’t “ready” for it. So naturally we all went out and read it immediately.

I told this story to my son when he was a seventh grader. I meant it as a funny story, and I pointed out that it had taken me years to appreciate that teacher’s pedagogic strategy. But then my son read the book himself right away. The mere long-ago echoo (回音) of a possible ban was enough to breathe life to his reading.

Adults have been known to worry a great deal about the possible destructive influence of the publishing world on children. If you look at the list of “frequently challenged children’s books” maintained by the American Library Association Office of Intellectual Freedom, you will see a wide range of touchy topics.

Books can get challenged because they involve magic (Philip Pullman, J.K. Rowling), or because they offend (冒犯) religious sensibilities. “A Wrinkle in Time”, by Madeleine L’Engle, has been challenged as both overly and insufficiently religious. Some books are challenged because they describe children behaving, well, childishly. (Junie B. Jones, the heroine of a series of books by Barbara Park, gets in trouble for using words like “stupid”.) So adults worry that books may be bad for children’s morals and for their manners.

In fact, banned book lists can be a great resource for parents looking for books that teach kids about the world and themselves.

When your children read books that have been challenged or banned, you have a double opportunity as a parent: you can discuss the books themselves, and the information they provide, and you can also talk about why people might find them troubling.

    24. What was the author’s teacher’s pedagogic strategy?

    A. Listing banned books. B. Hiding banned books.

    C. Arousing the students’curiosity. D. Telling some funny stories.nours.

25 Who probably wrote something challenging religion?

    A. J.K. Rowling. B. Madeleine L’Engle.

    C. Junie B.Jones. D. Barbara Park.

    26. What does the author advise parents to do?

    A. Involve themselves in reading.

    B. Let children make their own choices.

    C. Choose books for their children.

    D. Observe their children’s behavior closely.

    27. What is the best title for the passage?

    A. Not All Challenged Books Are Bad

    B. A Good Book Is a Light to the Soul

    C. Parents Should Respect Children’s Choice

    D. Banned or Not Banned-That Is the Question!

    C

When it comes to unlikely friendships wildlife never stops to amaze. And a giant 450-pound gorilla (大猩猩) sharing a heart-warming moment with a 0.5-pound wild bushbaby (灌丛婴猴) is definitely an unusual sight to be seen.

Over 300 rescued animals live at Ape Action Africa, Cameroon — a sanctuary (鸟兽保护区) for endangered animals like gorillas, chimpanzees and monkeys. Bobo, a western lowland gorilla, is among the first residents at the sanctuary. The huge male arrived at the sanctuary when he was only two, after losing his mom due to poaching (偷猎). And back then, Bobo was far from the strong male he’s now.

Even though he’s such a fearless animal Bobo is nothing but a gentle giant. And recently, his gentleness even blew away the caretakers at the sanctuary. While on their morning checks, the caretakers could not believe their eyes when they saw Bobo sharing a lovely moment with his newest and most unusual friend —a wild bushbaby.

It’s quite amazing to watch the tiny animal interacting in such a friendly manner with its giant neighbor. “The bushbaby showed no fear of Bobo,”said Elissa O’Sullivan, spokesperson for Ape Action Africa. “He moved around Bobo’s body and spent his time jumping around in an open grassy area, before choosing to return to Bobo.”

Wild bushbabies are normally nocturnal animals, so watching a bushbaby hanging with a group of gorillas in full daylight was even more amazing for the caretakers. “It is very uncommon to see a bushbaby during the day,” a staff member said. “We have never seen a wild animal interacting with a rescued one at the sanctuary.”

The other gorillas —three females and three young males, soon became very interested in Bobo’s new friend. However, Bobo suddenly became overprotective towards his tiny companion and he kept his group away from it. “Bobo’s group-mates were extremely curious, but he kept them all at a distance, making sure that no one disturbed (打扰) his new friend,” another staff member said. “The little bushbaby was happy to play in Bobo’s arms.”

    28. What do we know about Bobo?

    A. He lost a family member at age two.

    B. He was born at a large sanctuary.

    C. He protected his mother from poaching.

    D. He was the first gorilla at Ape Action Africa.

    29. What did the caretakers discover during their morning checks?

    A. Bobo made a surprising new friend.

    B. A bushbaby was lying beside Bobo.

    C. Bobo jumped around with his friends.

    D. A bushbaby returned to care for Bobo.

    30. What might the underlined part “nocturnal animals” in paragraph 5 mean?

    A. The animals that live in the bushes.

    B. The animals that like to hunt alone.

    C. The animals that hang with large animals.

    D. The animals that rest during the daytime.

    31. What was Bobo’s attitude towards those gorillas showing interest in the bushbaby?

    A. Unselfish. B. Unfriendly. C. Uncaring. D. Unclear.

    D

A new study of older adults finds excessive daytime napping (小睡) may signal an increasing risk of Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔兹海默症). Investigators from Brigham and Women’s Hospital report a relationship between daytime napping and cognitive (认知的) aging: excessive daytime napping predicts an increased future risk of Alzheimer’s, and a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s speeds up the increase in daytime napping during aging.

“Daytime sleep behaviors of older adults are often ignored, and a consensus for daytime napping in clinical practice and health care is still lacking,” said Peng Li of the Medical Biodynamics Program in Brigham’s Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders. “Our team calls for a closer attention to 24-hour sleep patterns — not only nighttime sleep but also daytime sleep — for tracking the health of older adults.”

Researchers at the Brigham recognized that all previous studies on Alzheimer’s disease assessed napping within a participant only once, and most of which were subjective and questionnaire-based. In the new study, more than 1000 individuals, with an average age of 81, were provided Actical, a watch-like device, to wear on their wrist for up to 14 days. After napping episodes were identified, the nap duration and frequency were calculated.

The results suggest that excessive daytime napping may signal an increasing risk of Alzheimer’s, and that faster yearly increase in daytime napping may be a sign of worsening or unfavored clinical progression of the disease.

Researchers acknowledge that although the method of the new study has been widely used in sleep field studies, they recognize that polysomnography (多导睡眠记录仪) is the gold standard for sleep scoring. Moreover, the participants studied were older, and therefore, the findings may not be easily translated to younger people. In addition, future studies should test whether a direct intervention in daytime napping can lower the risk of Alzheimer’s or cognitive decline.

“We hope to draw more attention to daytime sleep patterns and the importance of patients noting if their sleep schedule changes over time,” said co-senior author Kun Hu of the Medical Biodynamics Program. “Sleep changes are critical in shaping the internal changes in the brain.”

    32. What is the new study about?

    A. The link between Alzheimer’s and daytime sleep.

    B. Causes of sleep disorders in older adults.

    C. The symptoms of age-related cognitive decline.

    D. Ways to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

    33. What does Peng Li’s team advocate?

    A. Encouraging elders to get enough rest at night.

    B. Monitoring elders’ sleep patterns throughout the day.

    C. Investigating the health of elders with poor sleep.

    D. Providing good health care for elders with Alzheimer’s.

    34. How did researchers conduct the new study?

    A. By interviewing a large number of older people.

    B. By carrying out a survey with questionnaires.

    C. By tracking sleep with a wearable device.

    D. By referring to previous studies on Alzheimer’s.

    35. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?

    A. Advice on adjusting sleep patterns.

    B. Supporting evidence for the research results.

    C. The potential value of the study findings.

    D. Limitations of the present research.

This teenager lived alone with his father. Even though the son was always on the bench during games, his father was always in the stands(看台)cheering.

The young man was determined to try his best at every practice, and perhaps he’d get to play when he became a senior. All through high school he never missed a practice or a game, but remained a bench-warmer all four years.

His father was always in the stands, always with words of encouragement for him. This persistent young athlete never missed practice. but he never got to play in a game. It was the end of his senior football season, and as he was practising for the game on Saturday, the coach met him with a telegram. The young man read the telegram and became completely silent. Struggling to speak, he said to the coach, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today’’

The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, “Take the rest of the week off, son. And don’t even plan to come back to the game on Saturday.’’ Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. When the team was ten points behind, a silent young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room and put on his football uniform.
