C. How to keep food from going bad in summer.
A 19. C 20. C
W: During the summer you should be even more careful than usual because food goes bad faster in hot weather than in cold weather. When you buy frozen and refrigerated foods, don’t make long stops on your way home because frozen foods could become soft or warm. Using bags helps keep food cold until you can get home. Milk and milk products should be refrigerated immediately. When camping or picnicking or at any time when refrigeration can’t be made use of, use special dry foods. Don’t leave food in a hot car. Picnic favorites like meat, chicken and eggs should be kept in a cooler box. Above all, if the food doesn’t seem to be normal in smell or appearance, throw it away immediately. Don’t taste it.

Some of my earliest memories involve sitting with my dad in his study every night when he came home from the office. I’d watch as he put his personal items away: his watch, wallet, comb and car keys. They would always occupy the same spot on the table every time.
Dad’s comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say, “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK?”
I was more than happy to do it. At age five, this kind of task brought me such joy. I would excitedly turn the tap on, and then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly return the comb to Dad. He would smile at me, and place the comb on top of his wallet.
About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. Dad’s business wasn’t doing so well, and our stable life started getting shaky. He didn’t come home as much as he used to. And when he did come home, it was always late and I’d already be in bed. I started to get mad. Why didn’t he listen to Mum and just stick to his old job? Why take the risk and place the whole family in trouble? Over the years, I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him.
Now 28, I’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has also started to get back on track. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me went on.
Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. On that evening, I helped him carry his bags into his study as usual. When I turned to leave, he asked me to clean his comb. I looked at him for a while, then took the comb and headed to the sink.
It was a new comb. This one was brown. I hadn’t noticed that he’d changed it. After cleaning it, I passed it back to Dad. He looked at it and smiled. But this time, I noticed something different. My dad had aged. He had wrinkles next to his eyes when he smiled, yet his smile was still as heartwarming as before.
24. From the first three paragraphs, we can learn ________.
A. the precious green comb of Dad was made of jade
B. the earliest memories with Dad were full of joy
C. the author wasn’t willing to clean the comb for Dad
D. the author would study together with Dad every evening

A. That he was fired and had to make a living.
B. That he was eager to get everything on track.
C. That he hoped to earn a better life for the family.
D. That he wanted to keep the life for his family stable.
26. What emotional changes did the author experience when staying with Dad these years?
A. mad → satisfied → warm
B. satisfied → worried → angry

Being highly connected to a strong social network has its benefits. Now a new study is showing the same goes for trees, thanks to their underground neighbors. The study is the first to show that the growth of adult trees is linked to their participation in fungal (真菌) networks living in the forest soil. Though past research has focused on young trees, these findings give new insight into the importance of fungal networks to older trees — which are more environmentally beneficial for functions like capturing carbon.
“Large trees make up the main part of the forest, so they drive what the forest is doing,” said researcher Joseph Birch, who led the study. When they live in the forest soil, fungal networks act as a sort of highway, allowing water, nutrients and compounds to flow back and forth among the trees. The network also helps nutrients flow to resource-limited trees like family units that support one another in times of stress.
Cores taken from 350 Douglas firs (花旗松) showed that annual tree ring growth was related to the extent of fungal connections a tree had with other trees. They had much higher growth than those that had only a few connections. The research also showed that trees with more connections to many unique fungi had much greater growth than those with only one or two connections. “If you have this network that is helping trees grow faster, that helps capture more carbon year after year. These networks may help trees grow more steadily even as conditions become more stressful, and could even help protect them against death.” said Birch.
Birch hopes his findings lead to further studies in different kinds of forests in other geographical areas, because it’s likely that the connections among trees change from year to year. He said, “Knowing whether fungal networks are operating the same way in other tree species could inform how we reforest areas after harvesting them, and inform how we plant trees to preserve these networks.”
28. In what way do the new findings differ from the previous ones?
A. They reveal the value of fungal networks to adult trees.
B. They clarify misunderstandings of fungal networks.
C. They demonstrate a new way to capture carbon.
D. They confirm the benefits of fungal networks.
29. How do fungal networks help trees?
A. By acting as the center of family units.
B. By maintaining the balance of resources.
C. By fighting against diseases.
D. By bettering forest soil conditions.
30. What does the underlined “those” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A. Tree rings.
B. Cores from Douglas firs.
C. Douglas firs.
D. Fungal networks.
31. What can be inferred from what Joseph Birch has put?
A. The fungal networks support one another in times of stress.
B. The fungal networks enable us to know more about reforestation.
C. The findings can apply to different kinds of forests in other geographical areas.
D. The fungal networks will help trees grow more steadily if conditions become more stressful.
A 29. B 30. C 31. B
根据第一段的“The study is the first to show that the growth of adult trees is linked to their participation in fungal (真菌) networks living in the forest soil. Though past research has focused on young trees, these findings give new insight into the importance of fungal networks to older trees — which are more environmentally beneficial for functions like capturing carbon.(这项研究首次表明,成年树木的生长与它们参与的生活在森林土壤中的真菌网络有关。尽管过去的研究主要集中在幼树上,但这些发现为了解真菌网络对更老的树木的重要性提供了新的见解,因为老树对碳捕获等功能更具环境效益)”可知,新的研究关注成年树木,而之前的发现关注的是幼树。所以新发现与之前的发现的不同之处在于,新发现揭示了真菌网络对成年树木的价值。故选A。
根据第二段的“When they live in the forest soil, fungal networks act as a sort of highway, allowing water, nutrients and compounds to flow back and forth among the trees. The network also helps nutrients flow to resource-limited trees like family units that support one another in times of stress.(当它们生活在森林土壤中时,真菌网络就像一条高速公路,让水、养分和化合物在树木之间来回流动。该网络还帮助养分流向资源有限的树木,就像家庭单位一样在压力下相互支持)”可知,真菌网络通过保持资源平衡的方式来帮助树木。故选B。
30. 词句猜测题。根据第三段的“Cores taken from 350 Douglas firs showed that annual tree ring growth was related to the extent of fungal connections a tree had with other trees. They had much higher growth than those that had only a few connections.(从350株道格拉斯花旗松中提取的核心表明,年轮生长与树木与其他树木的真菌联系程度有关。它们的生长程度远远高于那些只有少数联系的树木)”可知,本段以道格拉斯花旗松为例,说明年轮生长和树木之间的真菌联系程度有关。由此猜测,those指代上文提到的“道格拉斯花旗松”。故选C。
31. 推理判断题。根据最后一段的“He said, “Knowing whether fungal networks are operating the same way in other tree species could factor into how we reforest areas after harvesting them, and it could inform how we want to plant trees to preserve these networks.”(他说:“了解真菌网络在其他树种中是否以同样的方式运作,可以影响我们在采伐后如何重新造林,也可以告诉我们如何种植树木来保护这些网络。”)”
D
The story of The emperor’s new clothes is one of Andersen’s best-known works. Cheaters fool the emperor into believing they have made him a fantastic suit. Courtiers (侍臣) dare not say that the emperor is naked; it takes a child to point out the obvious. How many companies have ploughed ahead with expensive projects that were favoured by the CEO, even when other managers have had doubts? The moral is that people are often too restricted by social practice to state their views.
In his new book Rebel Ideas: The Power of Diverse Thinking, Matthew Syed argues that the key to dealing with this problem is “cognitive (认知) diversity”, in other words, assembling a team of people with different perspectives and intellectual backgrounds. It is not just about selecting people for teams from both sexes and various races. Hire only Cambridge politics graduates or Stanford software engineers and they will have studied under the same professors and absorbed similar world views regardless of their gender or skin colour.
There is another element to selecting a good team: ensuring that those viewpoints are heard and respected. A study of over 300 projects by the Rotterdam School of Management found that those led by junior managers were more likely to succeed than those led by senior managers—maybe because other team members were less scared about pointing out potential dangers to someone of lower rank.
The ability to speak up within an organization, without fear of punishment, is known as “psychological safety”. Mr. Syed cites a study of teams at Google, which found that self-reported psychological safety was by far the most important factor behind successful teamwork at the technology giant.
One way to overcome shyness while brainstorming, for instance, is for everyone to write down their ideas but ensure their names are never known. That way, opinions about thoughts are less closely tied to the status of the thinker and can be tested against each other with less fear or favour.
32. Why is The story of the emperor’s new clothes mentioned?
A. To confirm its popularity.
B. To argue for children’s wisdom.
C. To make fun of the adults.
D. To indicate the importance of speaking up.
33. Which of the following makes an effective team?
A. People with the same cognitive origin.
B. People with more races and gender.
C. People with various academic backgrounds.
D. People following their leaders unconditionally.
34. Why does a team with a junior manager tend to succeed?
A. It encourages members to compete. B. It creates a relaxing atmosphere.
C. It allows members to voice opinions. D. It thinks little of social ranks.
35. What do we know about “psychological safety”?
A. It is a term invented by Mr. Syed. B. It contributes to diversity thinking.
C. It is a secret weapon of the Google. D. It is a project done at the Rotterdam.
D 33. C 34. C 35. B

The metaphor is perseverance. It means that if you stop chipping halfway, deadwood can’t be broken and you can’t even cut down a tree without perseverance. Perseverance wears away stone, and perseverance grinds gold. No matter what you do, as long as you have perseverance and devotion to do it, you will succeed. Perseverance and determination are the most important factors to success in life.
A couple of years ago, I volunteered to be a finish-line “hugger” at the Kentucky Special Olympics held in Richmond.
The day of the event dawned dull, wet and gray. Even though it started to rain and a cold wind blew, most of the participants were so excited that they didn’t seem to notice the weather at all.
My job was to stand at the end of a lane on the track and hug the person in that lane when he or she crossed the finish line. It seemed to me that many of the participants completed their races just so they could get that finish “hug”. As the arms of the hugger closed around them, their faces lit up with pure joy, whether they came in first or dead last.
While we huggers stood around, we talked. I was told that most of the participants had been training for the races all year. I also noticed that, the Special Olympic participants weren’t here just to win. They didn’t talk negatively about the people they were racing against. In fact, they hugged and wished each other luck before they started, and hugged again when it was over, whether they had won or not.
What I remember most vividly from that day was the long-distance race. It was a long race by any standards: twelve laps around the track. There were only four participants, three boys and one girl. They were only a couple of laps into the race when the rain started up again. Standing in the rain, I began to feel miserable. My feet hurt. I was soaking wet. I was hungry. I was cold when the rain and wind came and hot when the sun came out. I thought irritably: This race is lasting entirely too long. Even though the three boys were nearly finished, the girl was at least four laps behind. I wondered why she kept going when there was obviously no way she could win.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Finally, the three boys finished but they didn’t leave right away.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As she approached the finishing line, the girl was barely running.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, the three boys finished but they didn’t leave right away. The boys didn’t leave right away, but waited by the track cheering the girl on each time she went by. She was the runner in my lane and each time she ran by me, I could see she was wet and in pain and obviously exhausted. As she completed each lap her face was a little redder and her steps were slowing down. But she didn’t quit.
As she approached the finishing line, the girl was barely running. The audience went wild when she crossed the line. She fell into my arms and started sobbing. After hugging the three boys, she turned to the audience and bowed, saying “Thank you all.” Then she hugged me again and made her way to the awards table. I stood motionless, astonished and awed. Tears coursed down my face as I watched her joyfully accept her award for fourth place. At that moment, I understood why these Olympics were “special”.
