Jenny is a seventh grader. She is very good at dancing. Last year, she entered the school’s dance competition and won the first place. Her whole class was there to support her. This year, the school held another dance competition, but there was a change — the competition had to be done in pairs.
Jenny’s class expected her to win the competition again this year, but Jenny was unsure of it because she had never danced with a partner before. She asked some boys in her class to enter with her, but they all said no because they did not know how to dance.
She finally turned to one of her friends, Carl. Carl refused at first because he couldn’t dance either. Jenny insisted. Finally he agreed to join the competition. Jenny was very happy.
The competition was in two months. Jenny made a good plan to increase their chance of winning. On the first few days, Jenny chose a piece of music, and planned out their dance routine(整套动作). Then they spent two weeks memorizing their steps. It was very difficult for Carl at first, but finally he got the hang of it. They spent the rest of the time perfecting their moves.
The day of the competition arrived. They were going up against nine other pairs, and they were to perform last. The pairs this year were better dancers compared to last year’s competition. Jenny got nervous. Carl noticed this and told her, “It’ll be okay, Jenny. You are great, and I’m sure we’ll win.” Jenny felt better after hearing Carl’s words. Soon, it was their turn to perform. I began volunteering with Berkeley Animal Shelter at age 12. I helped get cats adopted(收养), cleaned up after them, fed them, and gave them love and attention. I really feel like I’ve made a difference. There’s nothing like watching a cat go out the door with a happy new pet parent.

    I Was Told I Can
About 6 months ago, I joined a gym. Every morning, there was one trainer who worked out at the same time as I did. He did his daily exercise with such a quiet determination(决心) that he made it all look effortless although I knew all too well how hard he was working.
A couple of weeks ago, I was watching him do chin-ups. I had never tried doing chin-ups before, but it looked so easy, so I asked him if I could try one. He eagerly stepped aside and encouraged me to try. I pulled myself up without thinking … once … then twice. I stopped because that was all I had in me, but he stepped up behind me and pushed me up for two more. It felt so good and I felt strong.
The next few days when I finished my workout, I would ask him to watch me do chin-ups. However, each time I could only do two. I was quite upset, but he told me that when he trained firefighters, men were required to do 5 chin-ups, and women were required to do one or two. Most people couldn’t do them at all, so he was amazed at what I could do. He further told me that if I practiced every day, I would be doing five or six in no time.
Because he told me I could, I didn’t realize how difficult it was. I was encouraged to try and I didn’t doubt it for a moment. I truly thank him for letting me believe that for me success is not only a possibility, but also a realistic goal that I can achieve.

My mom never took herself too seriously. She just wanted everyone to be happy, and we loved her for it. Even when I was upset with her for not letting me stay overnight with my friends, or when she expressed disappointment that I couldn’t bring my grades up, I still loved her so much. She respected my privacy (隐私). And if I ever needed to talk, she would leave her door wide open and listen to me carefully. She left us too soon, but she left her children with the memory of being loved. My mom wasn’t perfect. But I remember her as perfect, not because she did everything right, but because she tried to know me, to connect with me, and to always make me feel safe and loved.
Ten years after her death, I welcomed my own child into the world. At the beginning, I was just angry. Angry that this new person would never get to know her wonderful grandmother. Angry that I couldn’t pick up the phone and ask my mom how she dealt with this or that. I missed her love. I just missed her.
Later, I accepted and tried to change the situation. How can I give my daughter what my mom managed to give me? Could I be easygoing like her? Will my daughter feel as loved as I did?

    (2022·北京海淀·九年级期末)The Art of Singing
When Alana first saw the musical Annie, she knew she wanted to try out for the lead role at sometime in her life. She went home and sang the show tune (曲目) of Annie. She recorded her singing and listened back to it, but it didn’t sound as good as she thought.
“Your voice is like an instrument. You need to learn how to use it,” her mother suggested.
So Alana joined a band and a singing club. She also learned how to read sheet music and other singing skills.
Days later, Alana went to the library and took out some CDs of female artists to listen to. She ran through the female artists and tried very hard to emulate (模仿) their singing. First, Alana put on Aretha Franklin, who is know as the Queen of Soul. Then, she put on Billie Holiday. She learned to relax her neck and shoulders and breathed in from above her belly. Alana found that each singer had their own way of forming the notes. She was amazed to see that the human voice could stretch (伸展) in so many different ways. As Alana experimented with various ways of singing, she got more comfortable with what her own voice naturally sounded like.
Around this time, it was announced that her school would produce their own performance of Annie. Alana wanted the lead!
When she tried out for Annie, she sang very powerfully. “The sun’ll come out.. tomorrow!” she belted out. “You’re only... a dayyy....a... wayyyyy!”
Her music teacher applauded. “Alana, you’ve been working hard to become a better singer. Congratulations! You’ve got the lead role! You’re our new Annie!”

Every Monday morning, there would be a special show in her class and one student would be chosen to make a speech about his or her dream. Miss White hoped that Monica could have a try the next week. (2022·北京昌平·九年级期末)When I was growing up, I had an old neighbour named Doctor Gibbs. He didn’t look like any other doctor I’d ever known. He never shouted to us for playing in his yard, and was always very kind.
When Doctor Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he was planting trees. He had interesting opinions about planting trees. He hardly watered his new trees, which was quite different from others. Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants overprotected them because it made them grow weaker. He said, “Without enough water, they will have to grow deeper roots in order to search for water themselves. Having deeper roots helps them be stronger and live longer.” Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I’d watched him plant about 25 years ago. They were all tall and strong.
I planted a couple of trees myself a few years ago. Two years of caring for these trees meant they grew up weak. Hard environment seemed to benefit Doctor Gibbs’ trees in ways comfort never could.
When my son was a little baby, my wife and I often wished that his life would be easy. But now I’ve been thinking that it’s time to change our thought. I know he is going to meet with difficulties. There’s always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is expecting him to have deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, he won’t be beaten.
53.Why did Doctor Gibbs hardly water his new trees?
A.He was careless and didn’t like taking care of trees. B.He was too busy in saving lives to water them often.
C.He believed overprotecting them made them weaker. D.He thought it was enough to give the best wishes to trees.
54.What were the trees planted by Dr Gibbs like after 25 years?
A.Tall and strong. B.Short and weak.
C.Short but strong. D.Tall but weak.
55.Which is probably the author’s wish for his son now?
A.Meet people like Dr Gibbs in the future. B.Be lucky and experience less difficulties.
C.Stay away from dangerous things in his life. D.Be able to stand the rains and winds in his life.

Willy was growing up. He didn’t understand why all the wolves had to do everything together. They ate together, played together, slept together, and hunted (猎食)together. Everywhere, every day. It was tiring.
Willy thought he could do things himself now, such as hunting (狩猎) a rabbit, hanging out, sleeping alone and so on. But his mom wouldn’t let him try these by himself. She told him, “Packs (狼群) help us survive.”
