To Rehan Staton, his childhood was a life of privilege — loving parents, a supportive big brother and a pleasant, private school education. Everything changed when his mother left the country and his father lost his job.
He had to sleep with a heavy jacket on when it was cold. He was always hungry. He said he couldn't concentrate at school and would sleep during class. He went from straight. As to near the bottom of his class. A teacher told him he needed special education, which made him hate school.
Staton spent his high school years as an excellent athlete, raining to become a professional boxer. He had won a lot of martial arts competitions. But a tragedy struck him in his senior year when Staton suffered serious tendonitis(肌腱炎), in both shoulders. He couldn't lift either arm for months. His dream of becoming a professional player failed. He struggled to apply to colleges but was refused by all of them.
Staton's body slowly recovered from martial arts and he got a job as a rubbish collector. Many co-workers couldn't help but ask him a simple question, “What are you doing here? You're smart. You are too young to be here. Go to college.” It was the first time someone outside his family had spoken highly of his intelligence. It was the co-workers that emboldened him to return to school.
Several co-workers put Staton in touch with a professor at Bowie State University. The professor was impressed with their conversation and persuaded the admissions board to change its former decision.
Going to college forced Staton's older brother, Reggie, to drop out. They both knew someone had to be working full time along with their dad. It was a decision Reggie made on his own.
After receiving a 4.0, Staton succeeded in becoming a student at the University of Maryland. But he still had a long way to go to attend Harvard Law eventually...
    4. What finally changed Rehan Staton's happy childhood?
    A. His brother's losing the job.
    B. His serious health problem.
    C. His father's sudden death.
    D. His mother's leaving the country.
    5. What does the underlined word “emboldened” in the fourth paragraph mean?
    A. Force. B. Direct. C. Encourage. D. Accompany.
    6. Why did Staton's elder brother have to drop out of school?
    A. He wanted his brother to study further.
    B. His father asked him to leave school.
    C. He had lost interest in most lessons.
    D. He had to go out to find his mother.
    7. What will the writer mainly talk about next?
    A. What Rehan Staton planned to do after entering Harvard.
    B. How Rehan Staton managed to be admitted to Harvard.
    C. Why Rehan Staton decided to choose to go to Harvard.
    D. When Rehan Staton would be successful in Harvard Law.

Some people say they “never forget a face.” But what does that saying mean? Is there really no limit to the number of faces a person can remember? A new study from a group of researchers at the University of York in England has found that, on average, people can remember as many as 5,000 faces. They published their findings on facial recognition this month in the Proceedings of The Royal Society B, Biological Sciences.
Rob Jenkins works in the psychology department at the University of York. He said the researchers' study centered on “the number of faces people actually know”. The study suggests our facial recognition abilities help us to deal with the many different faces we see on the screens, as well as those we know, like family and friends.
For the human study, people spent one hour writing down as many faces from their personal lives as possible. Some examples may include people they went to school with, people they work with and family members. Then, they wrote down famous faces they know, such as actors, politicians and other public people.
The results showed that the participants(参与者) knew between 1,000 and 10,000 faces. Jenkins said one explanation may be that some people have a natural ability for remembering faces. “There are differences in how much attention people pay to faces and how well they process the information,” he said. Jenkins also said it could be because of different social environments. Some people may have grown up in more populated places. So, they may have had more social contact throughout their lives.
The people in the study included 25 men and women students from two universities. They were between 18 and 61 years old. Researchers think age may be an interesting area for further research. Jenkins said it is possible that we gather more faces throughout our lifetime. But, he added, there also may be an age at which we start to find it harder to remember all of those faces.
    8. What was the new study mainly about?
    A. How long people can remember faces. B. When people will forget faces.
    C. Why people can deal with different faces. D. How many faces people can know.
    9. What do we know about the participants in the study?
    A. They are good at recognizing faces.
    B. They remember more famous people.
    C. They have different social backgrounds.
    D. They try their best to avoid social contact.
    10. What can we learn about the last paragraph?
    A. We are sure to gather more faces as we age.
    B. The future research may focus more on age.
    C. The participants in the study are in their youth.
    D. It may be harder to remember faces of different ages.
    11. What is the text?
    A. An interview. B. A research report.
    C. A character story. D. A scientific novel.
    D
Have you ever experienced such an annoying thing as it took so long to open a web page? You're watching stops every few minutes, which ruined your internet experience. But it could be a thing of the past. On June 3, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced that China would issue licenses for the com- serialization of 5G. It means major telecom carriers will start to provide 5G services.
The “G” in “5G” refers to the generations of mobile network technologies. 1G let us talk to each other, 2G let us send messages, 3G gave us mobile data and the internet, and 4G made all of these things faster.
Now 5G promises much faster data download and upload speeds, and more stable connections. This means that you will be able to download an entire HD movie in seconds and only experience a short delay between sending and receiving data. For example, when you have a video chat with your friend, there is generally a 100 to 200 milliseconds(毫秒) delay with 4G, but 5G will reduce the delay to 1 millisecond or less, which is almost real time.
With a 5G network, the short delay in information exchange will allow driverless cars to run more safely, as they will be able to communicate in real time and avoid potential dangers. Meanwhile, 5G-enabled wearable devices will keep doctors constantly updated on the health status of their patients and warn them immediately if there's something wrong. Besides, VR games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real.
Though 5G will make our lives more convenient, it will not be perfect. For one thing, 5G will not “travel” far. On 4G networks, you can be 10 kilometers away from the nearest transmission(传输) base and barely lose signal. But 5G will only cover about 300 meters, meaning we will need more transmitters so that we can get signals. And in order to use 5G, we will have to buy new products specially designed for 5G that are currently expensive.
    12. What is the function of the first paragraph?
    A. To provide a background of the topic. B. To offer basic knowledge of the topic.
    C. To use an example to support the topic. D. To draw readers' attention to the topic.
    13. According to the passage, what is likely to happen to our life with 5G?
    A. Doctors can treat more patients.
    B. No drivers are needed in the near future.
    C. Many advanced technologies will be further improved.
    D. Children will hate playing VR games in the real world.
    14. What can be found when 5G is compared with 4G?
    A. 4G covers smaller areas. B. 4G needs more transmitters.
    C. 5G signals can travel farther. D. 5G costs higher in early stage.
    15. What is the text mainly about?
    A. The development of 5G.
    B. Challenges that 5G will face.
    C. Benefits that people will get from 5G.
    D. The difference that 5G will make to our lives.

A light knock on the door brought me from my kitchen. Because we had just moved into the neighborhood, I couldn't imagine who it would be. Opening the door, an old man stood there, who was dressed in dirty clothing and wearing dirty rubber boots. His hand hung a plastic bag.
“Can I help you?” I asked.
“Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables?” His blue eyes were hopeful.
“Are they from your garden?” I looked inside his plastic bag and saw some carrots with soil.
“Yes,” his voice was soft. “And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard. Would you like some of those, too?”
My heart softened, and I wondered if he was badly in need of money. With a sigh, I said, “Please step inside and I'll get my money.”
The next day, he knocked at our door again. This time, my little four-year-old daughter got there first. “Oh, hello. Would you like to come in for some tea?” Without a second thought, the old man stepped inside and held out a broken basket with several apples. “From my tree,” he said, removing a worn cap. “You might like to make a pie.”
The three of us sat at the kitchen table and drank our tea. It was obvious that my daughter liked hosting a visitor in her never-ending questions. “What is your name? Where do you live? Why are your clothes so dirty?”
The homeless-looking man laughed as he answered each question. His name was Mr. Locket and he lived around the corner. His wife had passed away several years ago, and his children all lived far away. He was lonely. His need for company had sent him door to door selling fruit and vegetables. Ours was the only door opened to him that day.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为100左右;
    2. 开头已给出。

Choose a biography next, followed by a mystery.(如果你的家人通常更喜欢小说,那就选择一本传记或非小说类的书。
    19. 根据上文“Set aside a whole afternoon or evening. When everyone's had a chance to read the book, make your family book club time something special. You could just chat about it over dinner, but why not turn it into an event instead? Schedule the time in advance, and plan for it together.(留出一整个下午或一晚上。当每个人都有机会读这本书的时候,让你的家庭读书俱乐部时间变得特别一点。你可以边吃饭边聊,但为什么不把它变成一件大事呢?提前安排时间,一起计划)”可知,本句为本段最后一句,对上文进行总结:专门留出来用于读书活动的下午或夜晚会成为全家人的期待,故G选项“这将成为家庭里的每个人都期待的事情”符合语境,故选G。
    20. 根据上文“Most kids will get bored pretty quickly if they're just sitting around talking about a book.(如果孩子们只是坐在一起谈论一本书,他们很快就会感到无聊)”可知,上文提到了孩子参加读书活动容易无聊的情况,故本句针对上文这一问题提出解决办法。

    36. affecting; 37. how; 38. threaten; 39. are; 40. a; 41. on; 42. being beaten; 43. to stop; 44. is solved; 45. seriously
故填how。

故填being beaten。
故填to stop。
故填is solved。

    Dear Tom,
Swimming has been my favourite sport since I was little. My father began to teach me when I was just 5 years old. I took part in several swimming competitions and got top prizes. I like it so much and the reasons are as follows.
First of all, it is an excellent form of exercise to keep my body in perfect shape. In addition, it is also an effective way to relax. I swim with a very low effort, focusing on nothing but the rhythm of my stroke which helps me gain a feeling of well-being. Furthermore, swimming is a wonderful recreational activity.
I hope you like it as well.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

原句:First of all, it is an excellent form of exercise to keep my body in perfect shape.
First of all, it is an excellent form of exercise that can keep my body in perfect shape.
1:Swimming has been my favourite sport since I was little.(运用了since引导时间状语从句)
2:I swim with a very low effort, focusing on nothing but the rhythm of my stroke which helps me gain a feeling of well-being.(运用了which引导定语从句)Paragraph 1:

When he finished the tea, he said he had to go home and promised to return the next day. My daughter excitedly waited for his next visit and made full preparations. As the old man visited us the next day, he was amazed by all of the preparations for him, including apple pies. His eyes were filled with tears. We became friends, and my daughter and I enjoyed the company the old visitor offered us. But before long, he had to move to live with his daughter and we hadn't seen him ever since.
    Paragraph 2:
Several years later, a small envelope was delivered to our home — a letter from the old man's daughter. She informed us that our dear old friend had passed away and sent us another letter written by the old man, which said, “Thank you for all your kindnesses to an old man. When I was lonely, you took me in. When I was badly in need of a family, you accepted me. My last few years are filled with happiness because of you.”
