Have you ever been on social media and seen your favorite celebrity talking about a product? These promotions might not be totally random, and are actually seen as a vital part of the marketing process. The question is: How do social media influencers ‘influence’ what you buy?
Human desire for status and making friends, combined with our need to belong to a group, makes us receptive to being ‘socially influenced’. Companies often use that desire to have a similar lifestyle to a celebrity we admire to hawk or launch a product. So, what do these promotions actually do?
Firstly, they can be used to build brand awareness. A social media influencer should have a strong understanding of the platform they operate on, and therefore can create engaging content that not only sticks to the brand image, but sparks their followers’ interests in a product they might never have seen before.
Secondly, influencers can improve a company or product’s relationship with their customer base. According to In Moment’s 2018 US Retail CX Trends Report on customer loyalty, 77% of buyers have been brand loyal for more than ten years. This is also true of 60% of millennials. A popular celebrity can target key demographics(人口统计数据) and talk or blog about a product, which can create an instant and lasting bond with the consumer.
Lastly, influencers can improve customer buying habits with seemingly “unbiased opinions”. We are more likely to respond to ‘peer recommendation’ than traditional ads, meaning the fact we see an influencer as a ‘friend’ can make us less likely to be doubtful about what we are seeing.
So, the next time you see a celebrity talking about a product, you might want to consider that this could be a carefully crafted marketing strategy designed to target your core needs. If you find yourself examining a product you’ve seen on social media, you may well have been influenced.
    24. Why do companies invite celebrities to launch products?
    A. Because celebrities can improve the companies' public images.
    B. Because consumers like to share similarity with celebrities.
    C. Because celebrities want to make more money.
    D. Because consumers can make friends with celebrities.
    25. According to the passage, which strategy is often used by influencers?
    A. Taking advantage of their popularity. B. Sending gifts to customers.
    C. Setting up operation platforms. D. Recommending products to their friends.
    26. What does the underlined word unbiased probably mean in the passage?
    A. negative B. subjective C. objective D. supportive
    27. What’s the main idea of the passage?
    A. how social influencers affect our buying B. how celebrities earn fame
    C. how social media influence our lifestyle D. how social media make ads

    C
“It’s a big hammer to crack a nut.” This is how one angry parent described the recent crackdown (严厉的打击) by London police on parents who drop their kids off at school by car. Yes, you read that correctly—the very way of transportation that many American schools insist is the only safe way to deliver kids to school is now considered illegal in the UK.
The decision to fine any vehicles seen dropping off or picking up kids within a particular zone of east London comes from city councillors’ (议员) long-term efforts to make the area safer and less crowded. They say they’ve been trying for years “to encourage reasonable parking”, but in vain. Neighborhood residents complain frequently about their driveways being blocked by illegally parked cars for 15 minutes or more, often while they’re trying to get to work, and the streets are long overcrowded.
Now the rules have changed. Some parents are angry. Angie is a mother who made the “big hammer” comment and says the crackdown is “way over the top.” The nearest drop-off point for her six-year-old is now a five-minute walk from the school. Others are happy with the decision, serious though it may seem. Councillor Jason Frost said: “Traffic has significantly reduced, and more children are now walking to school, which is a great result. I would rather have complaints that we are slightly inconveniencing parents than hear that a child had been seriously injured because nothing was done.”
I see daily the disorder created by these in-town drivers, when I walk my own kids to school. There’s a parking lot crowded with vehicles and a slow-moving train of cars moving in circles, many filling the air with harmful smoke. Meanwhile, the conversations around overweight children and the importance of daily physical activities continue to stand out in schools.
    28. Why is Angie against the new rule?
    A. She will lose her job as a school driver.
    B. She has adapted to the American practice.
    C. She is often fined by London police.
    D. She thinks it adds inconvenience to her kid.
    29. What concerned Jason Frost most?
    A. People’s complaints. B. Parents’ inconvenience.
    C. Students’ safety. D. Students’ health.
    30. What can be seen after the crackdown is carried out?
    A. Less daily disorder.
    B. Complaints from neighbors.
    C. More over-weight children.
    D. Favor from all people.
    31. What’s the passage mainly about?
    A. American schools care about kids’ safety
    B. London police cause widespread anger
    C. Parents attempt to resist a school rule
    D. Different voices are heard on a new traffic policy
    D

People with an impulsive personality refer to those who tend to do things without considering the possible dangers or problems first. According to a new study by researchers at the University of Georgia, such people may be more likely to have food addiction. The study found that people exhibiting impulsive behavior weren't necessarily overweight, but impulsiveness was related to a direct relationship with food, and therefore, less healthy weight.
Food addiction has been compared to addictive drug use. Studies have linked the dopamine(多巴胺)release that occurs after tasting delicious food to the dopamine release that happens when people consume other addictive substances.
Impulsive behavior involves several personality traits, two of these traits(特点) known as negative urgency and lack of perseverance were particularly associated with food addiction and high BMI(身体质量指数)during the study.
Negative urgency is characterized by the tendency to behave impulsively when experiencing negative emotions. Some people might drink alcohol or take drugs. For others, it could mean eating to feel better. Lack of perseverance is when a person has a hard time finishing hard or boring tasks. People with a lack of perseverance might have difficulty attempting to change addictive eating behavior, which could also cause obesity(肥胖).
"Impulsiveness might be one reason why some people eat in an addictive way despite motivation to lose weight,"said Dr. Ashley Gearhardt, a clinical psychologist. He was involved in developing the Yale Food Addiction Scale in aid of those people. "We are theorizing that if food addiction is really a thing, then our measure, the Yale Food Addiction Scale, should be related to helping control impulsive action," said Gearhardt.
Clinical psychologist Dr. James Mackillop, whose lab was conducting the study, believes that therapies used to treat addictive drug behavior could help people who suffer from addictive eating habits.
"Most of the programs for weight loss at this point focus on the most obvious things, which are clearly diet and exercise," Mackillop said. "It seems that managing strong desires to eat would naturally fit in with the skills a person would need to eat healthily."

    32. According to paragraph one, the result of food addiction is________.
    A. Motivation to lose weight B. Less healthy weight
    C. taking alcohol or drugs D. negative emotions
    33. How does the author introduce the two personality traits in paragraph four?
    A. By presenting questions and answers.
    B. By giving definitions and examples.
    C. By making comparisons and conclusions.
    D. By explaining causes and effects.
    34. What can be inferred about the Yale Food Addiction Scale from the text?
    A. It is theoretically a proper treatment for addictive food and drug behavior.
    B. It will prove whether food addiction is a problem to impulsive people.
    C. It might help some impulsive people with food addiction to lose weight.
    D. It has been successfully carried out among overweight people.
    35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Food Addiction Compared to Drug Use
    B. Dopamine Release Caused by Food Addiction
    C. Food Addiction Contributing to Obesity
    D. Impulsive Personality Linked to Food Addiction

    Text10
Sports and games are very useful for character training. In their lessons at school, boys and girls may learn about such virtues as unselfishness, courage, discipline and love of one's country. But what is learned in books cannot have the same deep effect on a child's character as what is learned by experience. As most of the pupils' time is spent in classes studying lessons, an ordinary day school can't give much practical training for their lives in the future. So it is what the pupils do in their spare time that really prepares them to take their place in society as citizens when they grow up. If each of them learns to work for his team, and not for himself on the football field, he will lately find it natural to work for the good of his country instead of only for his own benefit.
