When I was five or six years old, I remember watching TV and seeing other children suffer in other parts of the world. I would say to myself, “When I grow up, when I can get rich, I will save kids all over the world. ”
At 17, I started my career here in America, and at the age of 18, I started my first charity
organization. I went on to team up with other organizations in the following years, and met, helped, and even lost some of the most beautiful souls, from six-year-old Jasmina Anema who passed away in 2010 from leukemia (白血病), and whose story inspired thousands to volunteer as donors, to my grandmother who lost her battle against cancer in 2012. And her death is the very reason and the
driving force behind the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF). We’re all humans. And we all just want a
chance: a chance of life, a chance of education, a chance of a future, really. And at the CLF, our mission is to impact as many lives as possible, but it starts with just one.
People make it seem too hard to do charity work. The truth is that you don’t have to be rich to
help others. You don’t need to be famous. You don’t even have to be college-educated. But it can start with your neighbor, the person right next to you, the person sitting next to you in class, and the kid down the block in your neighborhood. You just do whatever you can to help in any way that you can. And today, I want to challenge each of you to make a decision to help one person, one
organization, one situation that touches your heart. My grandmother used to say, “If you’ve got a
dollar, there’s plenty to share.”
24. What did the author want to do at a young age?
A. Watch TV. B. Help other children.
C. Become wealthy. D. Grow up quickly.
25. What directly caused the author to create and develop the CLF?
A. A six-year-old kid’s request. B. Many volunteers’ inspiration.
C. Her grandmother’s death of cancer. D. Other organizations’ encouragement.

B. Work hard to get a college education.

Modern technology has a strong influence on many things we do. In fact, technology is shaping almost every part of our day-to-day existence, including education. Ashok Goel is a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Every term over 300 graduate students take his class on artificial intelligence (AI). The students never meet in person. All of the classes take place
online — through a website.
Having hundreds of students in a class means Ashok Goel has to answer thousands of questions. He has eight teaching assistants to help him. But even that is not enough to give all the
students the help they need. So, in January, he decided to try an experiment. At the start of the
spring 2016 semester, he added a new member to his teaching team: Jill Watson. She was able to answer questions faster than most other teaching assistants. And she was available 24 hours a day. It was only at the end of the semester that Goel’s students learned Watson’s secret: she was not a real
person. Jill Watson is an AI computer program. Goel says only two students came close to
predicting Watson’s true identity. He was worried about telling his students because he thought they would not like being part of the experiment. But once they learned Watson’s identity, they became
very excited. “Then, you know what happened? They not only asked that question about Jill, ‘Is she
an AI?’ Once the identity of Jill was revealed, they also asked if I was an AI. ” he said.
Goel now uses Watson in two other classes, but still doesn’t tell his students which of his teaching assistants is a computer program. He hopes this technology will make it easier for teachers to create their programs to use in and outside the classroom.
28. How does Goel give his students help?
A. Through books. B. By writing to them.
C. By face-to-face teaching. D. Through the Internet.
29. Why did Goel decide to try an experiment?
A. Because some questions were difficult for assistants to answer.
B. Because he wanted to improve students’ self-study ability.
C. Because he was too tired to answer those questions.
D. Because it was hard to answer so many students’ questions.
30. What’s the students’ response to Jill Watson?
A. Being surprised. B. Being indifferent.
C. Being excited. D. Being shocked.

New research shows that Goliath frogs — the world’s largest frog species, found in Cameroon
and Equatorial Guinea — build ponds for their eggs and tadpoles (蝌蚪), moving rocks more than half of their body weight in the process. A team of researchers from Cameroon and Germany studied the animals, which can weigh up to 6. 6 pounds and measure more than 13 inches in length when fully grown. The heavy labor that the frogs do could explain their size, scientists believe.
The research led by a team from Berlin’s Natural History Museum found that the frogs could
change existing natural ponds or create new nests in small ponds, about 3 feet wide and 4 inches deep, along river banks in Cameroon. “They sometimes move rocks weighing up to 4. 4 pounds. We think that this activity may explain why adult frogs need to be giants in the first place,” said Marvin
Schäfer, lead author of the study. As well as being strong, the frogs have also proved themselves to
be anxious parents, raising their young in ponds away from potential predators (捕食).
“Giant frogs are the first African amphibian (两栖动物) species now known to actively prepare
or even construct breeding sites for their young,” said Mark-Oliver Rödel, project leader and president of conservation group Frogs & Friends. “This shows how little we know about the biology, even of some of the most spectacular creatures of our planet. ”
Scientists hope the research will help conservation efforts devoted to the rare frogs, which are
considered endangered. Shrinking habitat, climate change and pollution are the main drivers of
species loss and are threatening more than 40% of amphibians, a report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) found in May.
32. What does the research discover about Goliath frogs?
A. They are only found in Cameroon.
B. They can lay their eggs in the trees by rivers.
C. They can move heavy rocks to build ponds.
D. They are the only African amphibian species.
33. Why do Goliath frogs create new nests?
A. To change natural ponds.
B. To keep their young safe.
C. To stay away from polluted water.
D. To adapt to the changing seasons.
34. What does the author intend to say with Mark-Oliver Rödel’s words?
A. People need to make more efforts to know creatures better.
B. Giant frogs are becoming an endangered species in Africa.
C. Climate change is responsible for species loss in the world.
D. Animals’ habits are changing due to environmental pollution. 第 5 页 共 8 页

第二节 补全短文(共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10分)
根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Some people seem to have a skill for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary,
master rules of grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. 36
First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the
book or teacher. 37 They try to find the patterns and rules by themselves. They are good
guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes.
38 Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language. They look
for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and ask these people to correct them
when they make a mistake. 39 They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange
things. They are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.
40 They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the
people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them.
A. Successful language learning is active learning.
B. They will try their best to communicate with others.
C. They discover their own way to learn the language.
D. Here’s a study of the way children learn to speak.
E. What makes language learning so much easier for them?
F. They find it easy to practice using the language regularly.
G. Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose.
