When Allie and Chloe Knuth decided to both attend the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the twins from Green Bay were excited to share a campus but also determined to have their own distinct experiences and follow their own academic paths.
Four years later—as they graduate together this month—the twins say things worked out even better than they could have expected.UW-Eau Claire’s campus is small enough that their lives sometimes overlap(重叠),yet big enough that each of them has had room to stretch and grow as individuals.
“It means a lot to graduate alongside each other and I wouldn’t want it any other way,” says Chloe, who will earn her degree in international business and management with certificates in Mandarin Chinese and leadership studies.“Graduating college is a momentous experience and I love that I will be walking with my sister.”
Allie, who will graduate with a degree in biology and a certificate in Chinese language, originally planned to go to UW-Madison.However,as college neared,Allie decided to go to UW-Eau Claire as well,a decision Chloe supported.“I didn’t want to be without my twin sister,” Allie says of her decision.“It means a great deal to be graduating with my sister because she has always been there for me.”
They shared some experiences and accomplishments during their college careers. For example, they both completed certificates in Chinese. As Asian Americans,it was important for them to learn more about Chinese language and culture.
Allie and Chloe also are active in the University Honors Program,a program where they were able to explore interesting topics that fell outside their academic program.“This program is not just something to put on my resume;it had a vast positive influence on my college experience,” says Allie.“Chloe and Allie contributed a great deal to the Honors program,” Dr.Heather Fielding says.“They invested time and effort into helping other students, especially new students,to adapt to college and develop a sense of belonging,” she says.

According to a survey published by the American Institutes for Research last year,a total of 57 colleges were operating some form of CBE programs and about 85 percent of all the higher education officials said they were either designing a CBE program at their school or were considering doing so.
Students in a CBE program choose a central field of study, just as they would at a traditional college or university.Yet instead of attending a series of classes led by professors or teaching assistants at schools, the students study online and direct themselves.
CBE programs require students to show their understanding of a given set of skills.Students must prove their mastery of skills that relate to their field of choice by taking related exams.Once they have met all the requirements of their study programs, the students will get their degrees.
CBE programs have made use of many new technologies, especially Internet and online media. This helps reduce barriers for nontraditional and other students by bringing higher education to them. And programs that permit students to work at their own speed may save students’ money by reducing the time it takes for them to earn a degree.
But some educators have concerns about the value of the education that CBE programs offer.Johann Neem at Western Washington University argues that the purpose of higher education is not simply to help students master certain skills. It should teach students how to think critically (批判性地),understand the subjects they are studying more deeply and see how they are connected to other subjects.Only in that way can they put the knowledge to better use.
He said,“You need to explore,think...get shaken, have a conversation and struggle. And those things take time.”
“Instead of supporting CBE,” he adds,“policy makers and educators should look for ways to improve access and reduce costs for traditional higher education.”

Facial recognition technology was used to permit passengers to get on flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International airport last week, making it the first in the nation to use the system. The technology can be used by international passengers traveling through a special terminal, which is operated by Delta Airlines.Delta said it is the first fully biometric (生物特征识别) airport terminal to operate in the U.S.
The goal of the system is to simplify and speed up the process of presenting documents to get on a flight.Passengers can begin using the facial recognition system when they first arrive at the airport. After the first check-in,passengers can also use face recognition to pass through security and to get on the plane. The system prevents the need for travelers to present their passport up to four times during the usual check in process.Travelers look into a camera that scans their face. This image is then compared against a collection of pictures kept by the CBP (U.S.Customs and Border Protection). The agency collects face scans from passports and visas.
The system, however, has raised concerns about privacy.Jeramie Scott,a lawyer with the Electronic Privacy Information Center, has called the use of facial recognition at U.S.airports a “massive threat”.He said that the government has created “a digital ID of millions of Americans” through facial recognition, and the government’s facial recognition database of citizens could be used for other purposes without an individual’s permission.“The government now has the power to identify you whenever it wants. And they did this without a public discussion or consent taking photos collected for one purpose and using it for another,” he said.
The CBP told CBS News that any U.S.citizen who has privacy concerns can choose not to take part in the facial recognition system. This would prevent the airline from collecting a face scan to compare with CBP records. Its policy is to remove photos of U.S.citizens from its system once their identities have been confirmed.
Delta says about two percent of passengers using the Atlanta airport terminal have chosen not to use the facial recognition system.Next year, the airline plans to expand its biometric system for international travelers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Michigan.

Ⅱ.七选五
While marathon study sessions may be unavoidable sometimes,do your best to manage your time effectively.
Reduce your workload by studying more efficiently. Before you start studying, always read your task sheet to make sure you’re focusing on the right topics. 1 This saves you looking it up.Finally, pick out the most important information,so you can study it first.
2 Make sure you have everything you need,so you won’t need to get up every few minutes to get something.Neatly place your textbooks, pens, notebooks and other study materials in your study space. This way you can easily get what you need without taking an unplanned break.
Plan out your study sessions in advance.Think about the time you’ll need for each task, add 10% extra time for insurance, and then schedule blocks for your tasks. 3 Remember to include short breaks every hour or so.
Break up difficult tasks into smaller steps.Tasks such as “Study for the History Final” or “Write the Term Paper” can seem unapproachable.Instead of getting confused and upset, divide big tasks into small ones.If you’re studying for a final of a course, start by looking over past tests and quizzes. 4 Smaller study tasks may also include creating outlines that summarize textbook chapters.
Do your best to space out your study sessions instead of cramming(突击准备).Whenever possible, give yourself time to study a little bit at a time. It’s better to study for three separate three-hour sessions instead of one marathon nine-hour session. 5
A.Choose a quiet spot for studying.
B.Prepare your area before you start studying.
C.Schedule your toughest and most important tasks first.
D.Study difficult subjects first to get them out of the way.
E.Then divide the course into its units, and study one unit at a time.
F.Additionally, ask your instructor to explain any topic that confuses you.
G.Multiple shorter sessions will help you remember more information in the long run.
1.答案 F
解析 F项中的“any topic”与空前一句中的“the right topics”呼应,且选项中的“Additionally”和下文中的“Finally”呼应,所以选F项,与下一句“This saves you looking it up.”
根据空后一句中的“Make sure you have everything you need...”
3.答案 C
解析 根据本段的段首句“Plan out your study sessions in advance.”
4.答案 E
解析 根据本段的段首句“Break up difficult tasks into smaller steps.”
