Another person’s enthusiasm was what set me moving toward the success I have achieved. That person was my stepmother.

I was nine years old when she entered our home in the countryside of Virginia. My father introduced me to her with these words, “I would like you to meet the fellow who is well known for being the worst boy in this town and will probably start throwing rocks at you no later than tomorrow morning.” My stepmother walked over to me, raised my head slightly upward, and looked at me right in the eye. Then she looked at my father and replied, “You are wrong. This is not the worst boy at all, but the smartest one who hasn’t yet found a way to give out his enthusiasm. ”

That statement began a friendship between us. No one had ever called me smart. My family and neighbors had built me up in my mind as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that. She changed many things. She persuaded my father to go to a dental school, from which he graduated with honors. She moved our family into the county seat (别墅), where my father’s career could be more successful and my brother and I could be better educated.

When I turned fourteen, she bought me a secondhand typewriter and told me that she believed that I could become a writer. I knew her enthusiasm, and I saw how it had already improved our lives. I accepted her belief and began to write for local newspapers and finally reached the goal she set for me. I wasn’t the only beneficiary (受益人). My father became the wealthiest man in town. My brother and stepbrothers became a physician, a dentist, a lawyer, and a college president.

    24. What can be learnt about the author from Paragraph 2?

    A. He was the worst boy in the town.

    B. He liked throwing rocks at people.

    C. His father had a low opinion of him.

    D. His stepmother praised him for his kindness.

25 . What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

    A. Stepmother’s influence on the family.   B. Friendship between mother and son.

    C. Changes in the family relationship.     D. Reasons for receiving education.

    26. Why did the stepmother buy the author a typewriter?

    A. To congratulate on his success.        B. To encourage him to write.

    C. To help him find a good job.          D. To teach him to read and write.

    27. What may be the best title of the text?

    A. Enthusiasm changes life             B. Success lies in education

    C. A stepmother’s amazing life          D. The secret of a good writer

    C

Children whose minds wander (走神) might have sharper brains, a research suggests.

A study has found that people who let their minds wander easily have more “working memory”, giving them the ability to hold a lot of information in their heads and control it cleverly.

Children at school need this type of memory on a daily basis for a variety of tasks, such as following teachers’ instructions or remembering dictated sentences. During the study, volunteers were asked to perform one simple task during which researchers kept asking if their minds were wandering. In the end, volunteers measured their working memory capacity (容量) by their ability to remember a series of letters mixed with simple maths questions.

Daniel Levinson, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States, said that those with higher working memory capacity reported “more mind wandering during these simple tasks”, but their performance did not deteriorate.

The results, published online in the journal Psychological Science, appear to make sure that the former research found working memory allows humans to deal with many thoughts at the same time.

Dr Jonathan Smallwood, of the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Science in Leipzig, Germany, said, “What this study seems to suggest is that, when the tasks aren’t very difficult, people with additional working memory capacity use them effectively to think about other things besides what they’re doing.”

Working memory capacity is also connected with general measures of intelligence, such as reading comprehension and IQ scores. Dr Smallwood added, “Our results suggest the sorts of planning that people do quite often in daily life — when they are on the bus, when they are cycling to work, when they are in the shower — are probably supported by working memory.”

    28. What did the researchers ask the volunteers to do during the study?

    A. solve some difficult maths problems

    B. retell some dictated sentences

    C. follow the teacher’s instructions

    D. carry out one simple task

    29. What does the underlined word “deteriorate” in the fourth paragraph probably mean?

    A. become worse B. become better

    C. improve quickly D. improve gradually

    30. According to the study, working memory ________.

    A. prevents people from remembering dictated sentences

    B. causes people’s minds to wander more easily

    C. allows people to consider more things at the same time

    D. leads to people’s worse performance during work

    31. What’s the text mainly about?

    A. How the working memory works in the daily life.

    B. Wandering minds might have brighter brains.

    C. Why people’s minds wander while working.

    D. Working ability can be improved by wandering minds.

    D

Beyond this, Babbel includes a ton of additional features tailored to making sure you learn the language in a real, practical and accurate way. The app uses speech recognition technology to make sure your pronunciation is accurate compared with how native speakers would say certain words.

When I was in high school, I had a dream: to appear in a television program. 1 was too shy to share my dream with my teacher, however, or anyone else- except my parents. To me, it sounded like a dream that could never come true.

People often told me I could be a nurse, a teacher, or a hairdresser, which I thought were all great careers. But that was not what I wanted. Thankfully, my parents had raised me and my siblings to have lots of confidence. Both my parents, especially my dad, often said, "You can do anything you want to. "

With his encouragement, I applied to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson University in Toronto. I was overjoyed when I was admitted. I really loved the program and worked hard---and I was named the most outstanding graduate of the year. Just by getting into Ryerson and graduating at the top of the class, I began to think that maybe my dream could come true.

After I graduated. I applied to the CBC and CTV for a job. They both said the same thing: We love your education, but you don't have any experience. Come back when you get some!" And I kept saying, " How can I get this experience? I've been busy getting an education. " They both turned me down.

Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself, I'm new and they 're new. Why not give it a try?" I didn't know anyone there, so if I was going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I found out who the president was and decided to call him directly. What could I lose? I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, "Good! That's exactly what you should do. "

    Paragraph1

With excitement, I called the president of Global Television.

    One possible version:

    Dear David

I’m glad to receive your letter asking me about my high school life.

Life for a freshman like me is really challenging. At the beginning of this new term, a strict but exciting seven-day military training was held. Tired as I was, it built up my body and tested my will. New life on campus provides opportunities to make some new friends, with whom views can be exchanged in depth. There are various extra-curricular activities, which can greatly enrich my school life. As for my new teachers, it seems that every teacher can make their lessons lovely and interesting. As you can see, I’m adapting to the fresh life. How about you?

    Best regards!

                                                                    Yours

    读后续写

【答案】With excitement, I called the president of Global Television. It wasn 't long before Mr. Slaight was on the phone. I had practiced what I was going to say for thousands of times. After a brief introduction, I said, "I heard that your studio is actively seeking for quality individuals for your new show. I want to be an addition to your studio. " To my delight, Mr. Slaight offered me a chance to try out for the show. At the studio, everything went beautifully and they hired me on the spot.

A week later, my big day for the stage came. I was about to get on the stage when negative thoughts flooded into my mind. ." What if the audience don't like me? Then with my father's words echoing in my mind, I replaced the negative thoughts with positive ones. "This is going to be the best show ever. You are going to just shine!" I told myself. My positive thinking worked. Soon I restored my confidence. It turned out a good show and was the beginning of my hundreds of television shows. And my success came from picking up the courage to make that phone call.

W: How different are these rates?

M: Your package weighs 420 grams. So it is 21 dollars by air, or 7 dollars by sea.

    Text 5

W: John, are you going straight home after school this afternoon?

M: No, I won’t finish my class until one o’clock, and after that I’m going to spend two hours at the library before going home.

    Text 6

    W: I’m hungry, honey.

M: OK tell me where you would like to go for dinner.

W: Well, it is up to you. Remember, you promised to give me a big surprise.

M: Well, then, I say we first have dinner at “Old Johnson’s” and then go to the theatre afterwards.

W: That is a surprise, but that isn’t quite big.

M: Sorry, I’ve forgotten. There is another surprise I haven’t told you. I have got a raise because of my good work.

W: Wonderful! You are so great.

    Text 7

W: Hey, Jim I didn’t know you biked to work.

M: Yeah, it helps keep me fit and protects the environment.

W: One less car on the road means less pollution.

M: Right. Since my office is behind a park, it’s a really nice ride to go through it.

    W: How far is it?

M: Oh, about 5 miles. It takes me about half an hour.

W: I wish I could do it, but I work in the city. So I have to take the train.

M: You’re doing your part for the environment by using public transportation, too.

    Text 8

    W: Are you free now?

M: No, I’m not free today.

W: Then when can we meet together?

M: Do you mean to talk about the play we will act out?

W: Right. It’s really necessary for us to prepare it well this time. You know it is really important for us including Jane and Judy.

    M: I certainly know that.

W: Well, that’s why I’m going to meet with you. Can you spare some time no matter how busy you are?

M: How about 7:30 pm tomorrow? Half an hour after I finish my English lesson.

W: OK! That suits me fine. I’ll call them. We’ll see you tomorrow evening.

    Text 9

W: Hi, Andy, how are you finding your new job?

M: Pretty good. My workmates seem alright. In the past three months everything has been great.

W: That’s nice. What do they have you doing over there?

M: Well, I work in the marketing department. The company culture is totally different. Before, when I was assigned a task, I was totally on my own but here the work is done in teams.

    W: That’s really good.

M: Indeed. I like our boss too. He is easy to get along with and he treats everybody here with respect and care. He’s also highly respected by all his employees.

W: That’s good for a positive work environment and helps improve and encourage employees. I wish my boss was like that.

M: True, take my former manager as an example. He was extremely bad-tempered and always found fault with others.

    Text 10

On a stormy night, I was alone at home. After finishing my homework, I was about to go to bed. When I turned off the light, I saw a scary shadow figure at my window. Suddenly there was a flash of lightning followed by thunderstorms. I saw a lion’s face at the window. I was so scared that I ran to my bed and hid myself under the blanket. I started to shout, “Mom, Dad...”, but there was no answer. Then I remembered they went to hospital to accompany my sick grandfather. The clock struck 12. I tried to sleep, but I couldn’t. I felt too frightened because my mind was full of scary thoughts. After some time passed, I fell asleep at last. I woke up only after eight in the morning and switched on the TV news. It turned out that the lion in our local zoo escaped at 11 last night and I was excited to hear that the lion had already been trapped at 6 o’clock in the early morning by the keepers of the zoo. I felt very much relieved after the news. At breakfast, I told my parents what I had seen last night. My parents were also frightened and they promised that they would never leave me at home alone.
