I would always remember that day. When I was 14,all I wanted was a unique necklace with my name carved(刻,雕刻).It was the "in" thing and it seemed every girl except me had one.On my 15th birthday, my Mum gave me a beautiful necklace with my initials(姓名首字母)carved into it. I was in heaven.
What made it even more special was that it was about the only thing that wasn't being "replaced".We'd been burnt out in fires that swept through our area earlier that year and had lost everything,so most of the "new" stuff(东西)we got was really just to replace what we'd lost. But not my necklace. My necklace was new.
Then, only one month later,I lost it.I took it off before bed and it was missing in the morning.I was sad and searched everywhere for it.But it seemed to have disappeared.Eventually,I gave up and stopped looking for it.And two years later,we sold the house and moved away.
Years passed, and a couple of moves later,I was visiting my parents when Mum told me that she had something for me.It wasn't my birthday, nor was it Easter or Christmas or any other giftgiving occasion.Mum noticed my questioning look."You'll recognize this one." she said, smiling.
Then she handed me a small ring box.I took it from her and opened it to find my beautiful necklace inside.
The family who had bought our house 13 years earlier had recently decided to do some redecorations, which included replacing the carpets. When they pulled the carpet up in my old bedroom, they found the necklace. As it had my initials carved into it,they realized who owned the necklace. They'd had it professionally cleaned up by a jeweler before sending it to my mother. And it still fits me.
25. The underlined word "in" in the first paragraph probably means" ______ ".
A. available B. fashionable
C. practical D. renewable
26. When she got the necklace back, the writer was about ______ .
A. 30 years old B. 28 years old

B. The writer never stopped looking for her necklace.
C. The writer's ring was cleaned up by the new house owner.
D. The writer's family moved several times during her growth
28. What would be the best title for the passage? ______
A. My New Necklace
B. Lost and Replaced
C. Lost and Found
D. A Beautiful Necklace.

Did you know that a drop of your blood can predict (预测) diseases you may develop in the future? This is possible through genetic (基因的) testing. The most common type of genetic testing is called “newborn screening,” which is done to find treatable genetic disorders in newborn babies. In many countries, babies are screened in the hospital shortly after they are born. Although it is unusual to find that a baby has a genetic disorder, those that do have a disorder start receiving treatment right away.
Another type of genetic testing is called “predictive gene testing.” This is used to predict an adult’s risk of developing certain diseases later in life. There are many obvious advantages. A negative(阴性的) test (a test that says a person is not likely to develop a disorder) can help people feel really relaxed. Jen Thomson, who recently underwent predictive gene testing for colon cancer, explains, “So many people in my family died of colon cancer, which has made me really worried. When the test came back negative, I felt as if someone had lifted a large weight off my shoulders.”
There are also some controversial (有争议的) downsides to genetic testing. Alzheimer’s disease runs in An Lee’s family. An has decided to get genetic testing to see if she is likely to develop it. However, her husband Bao is not happy about her decision. Bao explains, “If the result is positive (阳性的), how will it help to know that she will probably develop the disease? If I had the Alzheimer’s gene, I wouldn’t want to know.” Another problem is that even if someone tests positively for a disease, it doesn’t mean that they will surely develop the disease. So a person could spend years worrying about something that will never happen.
29. Which of the following is TRUE of newborn screening?
A. It can only be done on certain babies.
B. It is unacceptable in many countries.
C. It can treat any kind of disorder.
D. It helps see if a baby is healthy.
30. What was the problem with Jen Thomson?
A. Something was wrong with her shoulders.
B. She was afraid of developing colon cancer.
C. A positive test changed her life completely.
D. Alzheimer’s disease destroyed her memory.
31. What Bao says in the last paragraph shows a feeling of _____.
A. peace B. pride
C. doubt D. loneliness
32. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To explain what genetic testing is for.
B. To encourage people to take a genetic test.
C. To give a description of Alzheimer’s disease.
D. To show the influence of a positive test on patients.
D
Watson entered Mr. Smith’s office. The boss was a hard man. He fired people who didn’t do well without giving them a second chance.
“Watson,” said Mr. Smith, “this past year your department hasn’t earned money. We’re going to drop that department. It’s finished. I’m sorry, —but you’ll have to go.” “But, sir — if I just had a little more time. For the moment I need the job to keep my son at Riverside School.”
“What’s that!” said the boss. “Riverside! I didn’t know you had a boy there. That’s an expensive school for a man with your salary.”
“I know, sir. But he likes it there so much! He’s a star athlete and the best boxer in the school. The boys call him Champ there.”
The boss sat perfectly still for a long time — a faraway (恍惚的) look in his eyes. Then, suddenly, he said, “We’ve got to close your department, Watson. But you’ll take over a new job in another department. It means longer hours—maybe more pay. Now get out. You’re here for life.”
Watson got out, with surprise on his face. Then the boss took a letter from the top drawer of his desk. It was Herbie’s last letter from Riverside School —written a few days before he died. He had read it over and over again with sick pain. The letter read:
I can’t say the boys here are any nicer to me than the others were. I guess it’s the same everywhere when you’re a cripple (跛脚的人). But don’t worry about me, Dad, They’ve got a good chemistry department here. And there’s one boy here who is really great. He’s a track star and boxing champ (冠军) and just tops in chemistry.
The boys call him Champ. He made them stop throwing my books around. And he knocked a boy down who hit me. He is the best friend I ever had. Dad, when I grow up, I want to do something for Champ. Something big — that he won’t even know about.
Your son,
Herbie
33. From the text we know that Herbie .

B. a man was needed in another department
C. Herbie told Mr. Smith to do so in his letter

You’ve been told a hundred times that exercise is good for your health. (36) Here are four benefits that you can get from just a little daily exercise.
(37) Do you feel a bit more clear after good daily exercise? Not only is your brain getting more energy and oxygen, but many studies have shown that exercise can help you remember and learn things better. Of course, an intense exercise right before a big exam could leave you more tired than smart - but the two are still undoubtedly linked.
You will become more confident. (38) Through exercising, you will feel more accomplished and social (if you work out at a gym). Even if you don’t see immediate results in your body, the effort will make you feel better - and a bit of confidence can go a long way.
You will live longer. It’s no secret that healthy living will keep you alive longer. One study found that exercise improves life expectancy as much as quitting smoking. (39) And just a bit of regular exercise can slow the process for a while.
You will sleep better. If you ever have trouble falling asleep at night, it is a good way to solve this problem with regular exercise. The National Sleep Foundation says that regular exercise can help you sleep better. (40) If you exercise too closely to bedtime, it can actually have the opposite effect! Luckily, you can choose other good ways to fill up that pre-bed relaxation time.
A. You will be happier.
B. You will improve your memory.
C. It is really true that sitting all day is killing you.
D. Both of these are important parts of losing weight.
E. It’s true, and it’s good for a lot more than just losing weight or building muscle.
F. Obviously, exercise can improve your appearance which can improve confidence.
G. The best time to exercise is in the morning or in the afternoon, rather than before bed.
