      NASA has a new job listing, and it’s no joke. The US space agency (机构) is looking for a “joker” to join their planned mission (任务) to Mars.

    A mission to Mars is no laughing matter. On average, the red planet is 140 million miles (225 million kilometers) away from Earth. A trip there would take around eight months in a small spacecraft. And Mars has a communications delay (延迟) of 20 minutes. This means that astronauts will have to wait 20 minutes for a reply, when an emergency happens.

    “When you’re living with others in a confined space for a long period of time, such as on a mission to Mars, problems are likely to occur,” Jeffrey Johnson, a scientist at the University of Florida, told The Guardian.

    This is probably why NASA wants an astronaut with a sense of humor. “These are people that have the ability to pull everyone together,” Johnson said.

    In stressful situations, perhaps humor is a way to know we aren’t alone. By laughing together, we share our stress. Then we can focus on our jobs instead of just worrying.

    There are other examples of team “clowns”. One example is the journey to the South Pole (南极) led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. It was a difficult journey, full of danger. Adolf Lindstrom, a cook at Amundsen’s team, was a “clown”. He made people laugh through the whole journey. Amundsen later wrote that Lindstrom was the most valuable member of the team.

    But if you’re hoping that your favorite TV comedian (喜剧演员) will fly to Mars, that probably won’t happen.

    “Being funny won’t be enough to land somebody the job,” Johnson said. “They also need to be an excellent scientist and engineer.”

        On a cold day in early November 2015 I went outside to get our New York Times from the driveway and noticed a large cardboard box tied to the familiar blue bag. In the cardboard box was a pair of Google cardboard goggles (护目镜) for watching VR videos. Upon reading the introductions, I downloaded (下载) the VR app and set up the Google cardboard goggles.

    That Sunday, the app showed three pieces about the imaginary war damage. I remember very well standing in my kitchen with my wife and three children as we each took turns trying on the goggles and watching the short VR video of an airdrop (空投) of food. I couldn’t help shaking while I looked around and saw people running to collect rice bags being dropped at my feet, which was so clear and seemed real.

    It was a moment I will not forget, for in that moment I knew the future, my children’s future, would look greatly different from what I had at that age. It must have been like the excitement my grandparents had when TV changed to color.

    More importantly, I realized what effect these devices (设备) would have on my teaching. That Monday I brought my pair of goggles in and a few pairs I borrowed from my neighbors to share the experience with my students. The purpose of the first lesson was pretty simple: to share this cool new experience with my students. The students were amazed and couldn’t wait to use the goggles. And that was what I had expected

       When we think of the term women of Influence, what comes to our mind? Are they women who have social status and power, whose work brings about great changes for their communities, countries and the world? As women of influence their work is important.

    There are other women of influence whose roles are equally as important but often go unnoticed in social media. The roles our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts play in our lives, influencing the people we’ve grown to be. These women also lead by example with love, strength, gentleness. They made and continue to make personal sacrifices (牺牲) so that we can be healthy and happy.

    There are many women in my life who have helped me grow into the woman I am today. First my Mom, whose strength and courage showed me how to be strong and courageous too. My memories of her still fill me with love and inspiration. My grandmother taught me by example, how to age gracefully while continuing to stay connected to the world around her even when she became too old to go out.

    I am grateful to many friends of all ages, who share my joys, my sorrows, celebrated my strengths as well as my weaknesses. Without the influence of all these women in my life I would not be the woman I am today. For each and every one of these beautiful women, I am deeply grateful for their wisdom, love and guidance along my life journey.
