As a geothermal scientist, I know that boiling rivers exist—but they are always near volcanoes. You need a lot of heat to make that much water boil. We were working in the volcanic gap, a 950-mile-long area that covers most of Peru, where there hasn’t been active volcanism for the past two million years.
Yet we’d found the Shanaya, a name originated from “heating thing”. My measurements averaged 190°-195°F. The locals think it’s so hot because of the Yacumama, or “water mother”—a spirit who gives birth to waters—represented by a snake-head-shaped rock at the origin of the heated water.
I had to cut my way through the bush at the side of the river to take temperature readings. All the while, right next to me was this very hot, fast-flowing body of water. A friend at the nearest village had told me, “Use your feet like eyes.” You can’t see heat, but you can feel it when you step near it. I wore sandals(凉鞋).
I was at a part of the river measuring 210°F, standing on a rock the size of a sheet or paper, when the rain fell. It was like a curtain rising. The temperature differential between the rain and the river caused a whiteout. I couldn’t see, but I whistled to let my partner know I was OK.
At 130°F flesh cooks, and the water around me was nearing twice that. My eyes would have cooked in less than a minute, and I couldn’t have seen how to get out. I saw rats fall in, their eyes turning milky white. I kept whistling.
After 15 minutes the rain stopped and the steam cleared. A hard rain in most situations would have been nothing important. Here, for a matter of minutes, it thinned the line between researching and being boiled alive.
40. What do we know about boiling rivers?
A. They are always found not far from volcanoes.
B. They were discovered two million years ago.
C. Geothermal scientists doubt their existence.
D. Most of them can be found in Peru.

D. He fell down because of his blindness.
43. What is the best title for the text?
A. Water near volcanoes.

Knotting his brows at some medical reports, one old man sensed a potential danger. On that day, 59 citizens in Wuhan had caught pneumonia(肺炎) of unknown etiology. The phenomenon reminded him of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak that had spread across China 17 years ago. It was he who had come up with an effective treatment for SARS.
China’s most respectable epidemiologist(流行病学家), 84-year-old Zhong Nanshan, is widely known to the public as the hero who defeated SARS. After a lifetime researching respiratory diseases, he was keenly aware that the new pneumonia may not be a simple disease, but a Pandora’s box that could engulf the world.
Zhong grew up in a family of doctors, and lives by a simple motto: save lives and always be honest. In 2003, when SARS spread across China, he volunteered to treat patients, staying in hospital wards for weeks on end to study the disease. At the same time, he also spent countless nights in his lab looking for a cure for the deadly disease. His efforts paid off. Months later, his treatment plan for SARS was adopted by China and then the whole world, saving thousands of lives.
Zhong is also known for an incident. When authorities announced that the virus had been brought under control, he publicly criticized the assessment, deciding instead to tell the public the truth. In one post-SARS interview, he said: “ I couldn’t help myself. I said it’s not all under control.” His virtue(美德) won widespread praise from the Chinese public, who hailed him as a hero.
Seventeen years later, the old man is once again leading a team in a battle. Although this new virus is known to be particularly dangerous to the elderly, Zhong paid little attention to his own safety. On January 29, he and his colleagues spent over six hours on an online medical inquiry, checking five patients who were in critical condition.
“The hospitals are our battlefield, and doctors and nurses are warriors. When we are needed, we should charge forward, because this is our duty!” said Zhong.
As well as treating the patients, Zhong is also a messenger who delivers factual updates of COVID-19 to the public. Being unfamiliar with social medical platforms, he has asked colleagues to help him make videos aimed at calming fears about the virus and teaching the public how to prevent the disease, such as how to wash hands or wear a mask correctly.
While praised as hero, Zhong told the media that Wuhan , the center of China’s COVID-19 outbreak and where tens of thousands of citizens have been confined to their homes for weeks to prevent the spread of the disease, also deserves that honor.
44. What does the underlined word “engulf” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

46. According to the passage, Zhong has done the following EXCEPT___________.
A. educating people on COVID-19 prevention
B. making great contributions to SARS treatment
C. giving a daily check on COVID-19 patients
D. inspiring doctors and nurses to charge forward like warriors
47. What does Zhong think of Wuhan?
A. A Pandora’s box.
B. A city of heroes.
C. A place full of secrets.
D. A window for observation.

Roller coasters are fast and exciting. But passing a painful kidney (肾) stone is not. The process is painful and can take a long time. But American researchers have found that a roller coaster ride just might help those suffering from a kidney stone. They say such rides help patients pass the stones with a 70 percent success rate.
David Wartinger led the study. He found that where the person sits on the roller coaster can make a big difference. He said, “In the pilot study, sitting in the last car of the roller coaster showed about a 64 percent success rate , while sitting in the first few cars only had a 16 percent success rate.”
When it comes to passing kidney stones, not all roller coasters are equal. The researchers used 174 kidney stones of different shapes, sizes and weights to see if each model worked on the same ride and on two other roller coasters. They found that Big Thunder Mountain was the only one that worked. The other two roller coasters both failed the test. Wartinger said the other rides were too fast and too violent. The movement forced the stones against the side of the kidney. He said that the ideal roller coaster is rough and quick with some twists and turns.
It also mattered where the stones were located in the kidney. The researchers found that stones located in the upper part of the kidney model were passed 100 percent.
Wartinger thinks roller coaster rides could really be used as an effective measure. He said that a yearly ride on a roller coaster could even prevent stones from developing. “You need to heed the warnings before going on a roller coaster,” he said “If you have a kidney stone, but are otherwise healthy and meet the requirements of the ride, you can absolutely try it.”
He adds that it’s definitely a lower cost alternative to other treatments. And riding a roller coaster is definitely more interesting!
48. What might passing kidney stones be like?
A. quick.
B. exciting.
C. enjoyable.
D. uncomfortable.
49. Which is useful to the roller coaster treatment?
A. Sitting in the first car of a roller coaster.
B. The stone forced against the side of the kidney.
C. The stone located in the lower part of the kidney.
D. Riding rough and fast roller coasters with twists and turns.
50.What’s probably the advantage of riding a roller coaster?
A. It can prevent the development of kidney stones.
B. It can help anyone besides those with kidney stones.
C. It can prevent danger because of its effective warning.
D. It can apply to everyone with kidney stones effectively.
51. What attitude does Wartinger have towards roller coasters for people having a kidney stone?
A. Concerned. B. Disapproving.
C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.

A campaign in the United Kingdom that seeks to pressure publishers to stop labeling children’s books according to gender(性别) is being given a push, with leading writers and at least one newspaper expressing support.
“We’re asking children’s publishers to take the ‘Boys’ and ‘Girls’ labels off books and allow children to choose freely what kinds interest them.” says the statement by the Let Books Be Books campaign. The organizers of the campaign say, “Such labels send out very limiting massages to children about what kinds of things are appropriate for girls or for boys.”
On Sunday, the movement got an important advance when the newspaper The Independent announced it would no longer comment on such books, or even blog about them. “Happily, as the literary editor of The Independent, there is something that I can do about this. So I promise now that the newspaper and this website will not be reviewing any book which is aimed at just girls, or just boys. Nor will The independent’s books section.” wrote editor Katy Guest.
The Guardian reports that one of Britain’s biggest bookstore chains, Waterstones, as well as U.K. Children’s Laureate Malorie Blackman, and U.K. Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy have also announced their support. “The campaign is attacking titles such as Usborne’s Illustrated Classics for Boys, described by the publisher as ‘a collection of action, adventure and daring-do stories suitable for boys,’ while its Illustrated Stories for Girls contains ‘brand new stories about princesses and dolls,’ ” The Guardian wrote.
But such a movement would also affect many popular and beloved books, such as the best selling The Dangerous Book for Boys. It’s clear not everyone thinks removing “for boys” and “for girls” from book titles is such a good idea. Many of The Independent’s readers are criticizing the newspaper’s announcement that it is banning reviews of such books.
“This is just stupidity,” wrote one reader on The Independent ‘s website. “The Independent has been an intelligent publication in my mind since I was a very young boy. So sad to see that change.”
52. What is The Let Books Be Books campaign?
A. It teaches kids about appropriateness.
B. It opposes gendered children’s books.
C. It aims to offer help to writers and newspapers.
D. It advises publishers to help children choose books.
53. How will The Independent react to the campaign?
A. Stop reviewing books labeled with “Boys” or “girl”.
B. Publish more children’s books on its website.
C. Provide more book reviews every Sundays.
D. Encourage children to review books.
54. What does Blackman think about the books mentioned in Paragraph4?
A. They aren’t suitable for children.
B. They shouldn’t have similar titles.
C. They include too many adventure stories.
D. They should be open to kids of either gender.
55. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To comment on some popular children’s books.
B. To report the recent progress of a cultural campaign.
C. To discuss some big changes in the world’s book market.
D. To explain the differences between books for boys and girls.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a senior student in China. Congratulations on the 78th anniversary of VOA! I have been a big fan of VOA, which helps me a lot.
I really find your program Special English highly beneficial to me. First, it’s helpful for students like me to have a good command of English. To its credit, the speakers speak in natural and native English. Besides, it’s suitable for the beginners because the speakers use words easy to understand and talk at a low speed. Lastly, it’s rich in content and students can gain a lot from listening to your program.
However, as a young student, I think it would be better to set up a new part for the program, which covers the news on campus as well as excellent compositions from the students. I hope you can adopt my suggestion.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
