Food waste is a growing problem throughout the world; on the one hand, we've got so many people starving, and on the other hand, in places like Western Europe or the US people are wasting almost 50% of what they eat. It seems reasonable to find ways to send the excess food to the places where it's most needed, but that doesn't happen nearly as much as it should. With that in mind, people in Galdakao, Spain, took action.

They launched what they call the Community Fridge – a regular white fridge placed in the middle of the town where anyone can drop food or leftovers and anyone can come in and take it. This fridge has already saved 300 kg of food in just two months. The service is not a charity – anyone can come and just take whatever food they want.

Of course, there are a few rules though – you can't donate raw fish, meat or eggs, for health reasons. Also, all the food has to be within its expiration(有效期) date and anything homemade should have a label with the ingredients; and so far, the program seems to enjoy its success. Other Spanish cities have expressed interest in adopting their own Community Fridge.

This is not the first time this kind of idea has been put forward. A man in the Saudi city of Hail has also put a fridge outside his house and called on neighbors to fill it with food for the needy.

The idea doesn't work in the US, and it seems like some people would rather throw food away than risk sharing it with others, but I certainly think this idea is worth spreading. Sure, you need someone to check the contents of the fridge and take out the food that goes bad, but for 150 kg of food per month, with one fridge? I think that's worth it.

    24. The first paragraph is meant to ___________.

    B. It is intended for the homeless

    C. It has some food security problems

    D. It has enjoyed success since it started

    26. What is the author’s attitude towards the Community Fridge?

    A. Opposed       B. Supportive    C. Doubtful    D. Unconcerned

    27. What may be the best title for the text?

    A. The Starving and Food Waste

    B. Community Fridge to Deal with Food Waste

    C. Community Fridge and Food Security

    D. Community Fridge to Be Adopted in the US

    C

America is home to a variety of wildlife. But these wildlife resources are now facing a dark future if we do not solve global warming, which is quickly becoming the biggest threat to the long-term survival of America’s wildlife.

Wildlife depends on healthy habitats, which are decided by four main factors: the right temperature, fresh water, food sources and places to raise their young. However, climate change is putting natural resources of the wildlife in danger.

Melting ice removes hunting ground from polar bears. Warmer water temperatures will reduce the population of many species that require cold water to survive.

Moreover, larger floods are expected to reduce water quality and make the aquatic(水栖的)habitats get worse. Severe droughts can kill plants which wildlife depends on for food and shelter, and take away their water sources.

Besides the above, global warming has also changed the available food for migratory(迁移的)species. Birds arrive on schedule to find their food resources ---- insects, seeds, flowering plants ---- have hatched or flowered too early or not at all. Milder winters make it hard to store seasonal food as well, so wildlife species depending on food stores to survive the winter are left without food.

What’s worse, droughts caused by global warming could dry up 90% of central US wetlands, making essential breeding(繁殖的)habitats for ducks, geese and other species disappear gradually. Rising sea level and changes in the amount of salt in the sea could destroy forests, leaving many fish and other wildlife without a place to breed.

The fact that climate is changing fast is often overlooked. Species may not be able to adapt to this rapid climate change or to move fast enough to more suitable areas as their current areas become less suitable for them. Unless significant action is taken now, global warming will likely become the single most important factor to affect wildlife.

    28. What is necessary for a healthy habitat?

    A. The high temperature.

    B. Melting ice.

    C. A breeding place.

    D. Climate changing.

    29. What caused some wildlife species to disappear gradually?

    A. Floods       B. Droughts       C. Milder winters      D. Global warming

    30. What does the underline word “overlooked” mean?

    A. Ignored      B. Valued         C. Denied            D. Proved

    31. What is the main idea of the text?

    A. America is home to a variety of wildlife.

    B. The habitats of American’s wildlife are being destroyed.

    C. America suffers from many kinds of extreme weather.

    D. Global warming is threatening the America’s wildlife.

    D

Six-formers are to be questioned on whether they can cook hot five meals and how often they could change their bed sheets, as part of a Government-backed scheme to prepare them for university.

Ministers are urging schools to put on special workshops for students aged 16-18 to ensure they feel comfortable with the prospect of leaving home.

The course, designed by the university accommodation provider Unite Students, will teach pupils how to manage their finances and how to live independently.

According to the course material, teachers should ask students questions which may not have occurred to them, such as “what is the price of a liter of milk?” and “list five hot meals you can cook on your own” and “how often will you wash your bed sheets once you move out of home?”

Damian Hinds, the UK Education Secretary, said: “We are all very conscious that moving away from home and going to university is one of the most exciting things that happen in your life, but it can also be very frightening.”

He said that an important part of education is preparing children for adulthood, so “it is right that we teach them what to expect for life after school.”

Mr. Hinds said that when he got to university, he discovered he had “relied on my mum more than I realized I did”, adding: “I wish I could have cooked better.”

Earlier this year, ministers set up a new task force called the Education Transitions Network, which includes representatives from Universities UK,UCAS and the National Union of Students.

It is part of a drive by the Department for Education to address the rise in students who report mental health issues during their time at university.

Data released earlier this year showed that the number of students declaring mental health problems on arrival at university has risen very quickly.

Figures obtained showed a 73% rise between 2014-15 and 2017-18 in students stating that they had a condition such as depression or anxiety before starting their courses.

32What will six-formers be required to do?

ABuy some daily necessities.   BDo tasks in special workshops.

CAnswer questions about their life.  DClean their dormitories.

33Why does the Education Secretary say life at university can also be frightening?

AStudents lack the ability t live on their own

BStudents cannot make a living by themselves

CStudents cannot shoulder the heavy burden of life

DStudents have a lot of trouble in socializing

34What is the purpose of ministers establishing the new task force?

ATo teach students how to cook hot meals during their time at university

BTo solve the problem of increasing mental illness among college students.

CTo prepare students leaving home for university

DTo research how students’ mental problems come about

35In which column of a newspaper can you find this passage?

Trash is the talk of Shanghai. Form this week, the city required residents and businesses to sort their waste and recyclables into separate bins. The task is huge: Shanghai produces more than nine million metric tons of garbage every year and it lacks even a basic municipal recycling system.

_____36_______ . As of 2018, humans were on track to produce waste at more than double the rate of rate of population growth through to 2050, with most of the growth coming in developing countries. Whether or not those nations can establish formal recycling systems will be crucial to managing the world’s trash and minimizing its environmental consequences.

In most of the world, profits rather than environmental concerns drive recycling, which is largely performed by self-employed waste pickers. _____37_______. Without those workers, as Beijing learned to its disappointment, when it pushed out hundreds of thousands of waster pickers in advance of the 2008 Olympics, trash simply piles up.

As far back as 2000, the Chinese government foresaw this problem and designated (指示)eight cities, including Shanghai, to test municipal recycling programs. They all failed miserably. _____38______. In 2017, China’s powerful policy-making State Council announced a plan to promote “garbage-sorting” in China’s major cities.

Shanghai’s new program is the most visible and extensive municipal recycling plan ever attempted in China. Under the plan, citizens are required to sort their trash into four separate categories: food waste, recyclables, hazardous(有害的)wastes and residual(残余的)wastes. ______39______. Fines of up to 200 yuan, roughly US$30, await those who don’t follow the rules.

_______40________. It’s also a lesson to other developing countries that the first step in creating a modern waste management system is to educate the public and encourage a sense that recycling is a collective civic responsibility.

    A. It’s hard to carry it out.

    B. And China isn’t alone.

    C. Regardless, the government is trying again.

    D. It’s a dirty job but highly efficient.

    E. Many citizens find it difficult to figure out the categories.

    F. Importantly, the system in Shanghai is uniquely public and punitive(惩罚性的).

    G. Meanwhile, Shanghai has spent weeks using every possible publicity tool to explain how and why residents should recycle.
