阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
My family lives in Texas. I was born and brought up in Texas and I am a graduate of the University of Texas. However, around my second year in law school, I wanted to make a great change, which was almost unheard of for Texans: I wanted to leave!
I realized this after completing my first-year internship(实习期). I knew I wanted something different and my chance came during the 2018 Super Bowl in Dallas. A snowstorm blanketed the entire city in snow and thousands of people were gathered. I heard by chance that StubHub, a big company from a great city, San Francisco, was throwing a party next door to my hotel. I thought if I could get an internship, I could leave for the summer and at least see what it was like. Yes, it was a huge leap. I told myself I was ready.
There was just one problem: I wasn’t invited to the StubHub party. But you know I’m the type of person who goes for something she wants. I crashed the party and found my way to the president. I kindly introduced myself and then asked if they had a legal internship program. Guess what? They accepted my request to be a legal intern, even though no such program existed.
Although the legal department only had a temporary position for me, the experience has shaped my life. Working for a great company in San Francisco, I’m very happy for making my decision to leave Texas.
By leaving Texas, I learned that it is so much more rewarding to try the unfamiliar than to stay in the comfortable. Exploring the unfamiliar is how you’ll understand what fits your life. I say, dive in head first.
1. What happened to the author in Dallas in 2018?
A. She was accepted as a legal intern. B. She played in the Super Bowl.
C. She escaped from San Francisco. D. She met up with her family.
2. Which is the biggest lesson that the author learned from the experience?
A. You must choose a career that you like.
B. Jumping out of your comfort zone is rewarding.
C. Accepting who you are makes you realize your strengths.
D. You should listen to your family to learn about your potential.
3. Which of the following words best describe the author?
A. Patient and modest. B. Supportive and energetic.
C. Intelligent and humorous. D. Determined and positive.
B
Move over, helicopter parents. “Snowplow(扫雪机)parents” are the newest reflection of an intensive(强化的)parenting style that can include parents booking their adult children haircuts, texting their college kids to wake them up so they don’t sleep through a test, and even calling their kids’ employers.
Helicopter parenting, the practice of wandering anxiously near one’s children, monitoring their every activity, is so 20th century. Some rich mothers and fathers now are more like snowplows: machines moving ahead, clearing any difficulties in their children’s path to success, so they don’t have to suffer failure, frustration (挫折) or lose opportunities.
It starts early, when parents get on wait lists for excellent preschools before their babies are born and try to make sure their kids never do anything that may frustrate them. It gets more intense when school starts: running forgotten homework to school or calling a coach to request that their children make the team.
Rich parents may have more time and money to devote to making sure their children don’t ever meet with failure, but it’s not only rich parents practicing snowplow parenting. This intensive parenting has become the most welcome way to raise children, regardless of income, education, or race.
Yes, it’s a parent’s job to support the children, and to use their adult wisdom to prepare for the future when their children aren’t mature(成熟的) enough to do so. That’s why parents hide certain toys from babies to avoid getting angry or take away a teenager’s car keys until he finishes his college applications.
But snowplow parents can take it too far, some experts say. If children have never faced a difficulty, what happens when they get into the real world?
“Solving problems, taking risks and overcoming frustration are key life skills,” many child development experts say, “and if parents don’t let their children experience failure, the children don’t gain them.”
4. What do we know about snowplow parenting?
A. It appeared before helicopter parenting.
B. It costs parents less than helicopter parenting.
C. It was a typical phenomenon of the 20th century.
D. It provides more than enough services for children.
5. Why does the author mention parents’ taking away car keys?
A. To show teenagers are no better than babies.
B. To advise teenagers not to treat their cars as toys.
C. To advise parents not to buy cars for their teenagers.
D. To show it’s correct to help children when necessary.
6. What’s the possible result of snowplow parenting according to the experts?
A. Children lacking problem-solving ability in reality.
B. Children mastering more key life skills than parents.
C. Children gaining great success in every aspect of life.
D. Children meeting no problems or frustration after growing up
C
As is known to us,male humpback whales (座头鲸) are skilled singers. Their songs are thought to attract females in high frequency sounds while to compete with other males in low frequency sounds. Research led by the Wildlife Conservation Society has now made a new discovery.
The study looked at the songs of two humpback whale populations, based on sound recordings collected from 2013 to 2018. One group was based in the South Atlantic, off the coast of Gabon, and the other in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar. Analysis of the recordings showed that the two groups picked up musical ideas from each other and borrowed phrases and themes into their latest song. This suggested that the males from the two groups came into contact with each other over the five years and shared songs.
To uncover this musical cooperation, researchers recorded the songs and transcribe them into more than 1,500 individual sounds and patterns, or song units. They found that the units were composed into larger phrases, which were then repeated to form themes. These themes were sung for hours at a time, or even days. By 2018, both populations have been singing largely the same songs.
“This similarity in the songs shows that these two populations come into closer contact than other southern populations”, explains Dr Melinda Rekdahl, leading author of the study. As well as being an interesting phenomenon, she explains that those songs allow even greater understanding into the workings of the humpback whale populations.
7. What do people usually think of the purpose of male humpback whales’ songs?
A. To have fun.
B. To attract other fish.
C. To increase the population of their group.
D. To attract females and compete with other males.
8. How could the two groups of humpback whales in research sing similar songs?
A. They were born with those songs.
B. The researchers composed similar songs for them.
C. The male whales from the two groups learned singing from each other.
D. The male whales taught the females songs from the other group.
9. What does the underlined word “transcribe” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Change. B. Describe. C. Create. D. Enjoy.
10. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Kind of Magic Whales.
B. Male Humpback Whales Share Songs.
C. The Biggest Ocean Animals.
D. The Workings of Humpback Whale Populations.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What is your best study time? Do you feel most like studying in the late hours of the night? 11 But that can be a problem for parents and school officials.
While some students like to get up early in the morning and study, most will say that late night studying is most productive. When it comes to brain power, students will say they perform better at night and the fact that parents might find surprising and interesting is that science seems to agree.
That can be a problem! School starts early in the morning for most students, so the benefits of studying at night can be reduced by the drowsiness (昏昏欲睡) of missing sleep! 12
Here are a few tips for maximizing study time.
● 13 You might surprise yourself. Try getting up early to study and see if it works out.
● Have a talk with parents to tell them that teen brains do perform better at night, so you won’t have to deal with miscommunication. 14 You might be able to come up with a solution.
● Agree on an absolute “start time” for studying if you need to study late. Turn off the TV! Your brain should be just fine at six or seven o’clock. You don’t need to start after dark.
● Agree on a solid deadline for closing books and getting to sleep.
● 15 You can do all of that early evening and get serious later in the evening if you’re a night owl.
●Upon occasion, you may be able to go to school a little late if you have to study for an afternoon test. As long as you are communicating with your parents, and as long as the tardiness doesn’t hurt your grades, you may be able to work this out.
A. Show them the science.
B. If so, you are not alone.
C. Don’t waste time on texts, games, and social media.
D. If not, adjust your study habits as quickly as you can.
E. Therefore, it’s a good idea to study early in the evening.
F. Figure out if you are a morning person or a night person.
G. Science also shows that the amount of sleep you get will affect your academic performance.

第二节:概要写作 (满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Online schools are becoming very popular today. Whether it is working professionals who cannot afford the time to go to a fulltime college because of their huge workload or stayathome mums who have many duties and cannot join in a college, online schools are much enjoyed at all. And now, even full-time students, who have the time to go to college, are going in for online education, as it leaves them with enough time to pursue(追求) other things, such as a parttime job or a hobby, along with studying. However, as with everything, there are both advantages and disadvantages of online schooling.
Let’s start with the positives. These schools cost much less. You don’t have to spend money on buying books or bus fees. Another advantage is the flexibility(灵活性) it provides. You can study at any time during the day. You can study wherever you want—in your house, at a café or even in a park.
Move on to the disadvantages of online schooling. Those students who always need a push from their teachers to do well, are very likely not to do well in online schools. And the greatest disadvantage of going to school online is that there are many employers who prefer students with a traditional degree to those who have an online degree. The employers feel that students who go to fulltime colleges are more knowledgeable compared to those who have online degrees. Since the very purpose of education is to land a person a good job, online degrees, many a time, do not serve this purpose.
No doubt that online schools offer the freedom which no full-time college can provide. However, how much the employers will value the degrees and whether a student can actually make his own study schedule and most importantly, stick to it, depend upon individuals. So in the end, it can be rightly said, online schools are good for some, while others should give them a skip.
