When the great library f Alexandria burned, the stry ges, ne bk was saved. But it was nt a valuable bk, and a pr man gt it.
The bk wasn't very interesting, but between its pages there was smething very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip f vellum(羊皮纸) n which was written the secret f the “Tuchstne”. The tuchstne was a small pebble(鹅卵石) that culd turn any cmmn metal int pure gld.
The writing explained that it was lying amng thusands and thusands f ther pebbles that lked exactly like it. But the secret was this: The real stne wuld feel warm, while rdinary pebbles are cld.
S the man sld his huse, bught a tent, camped n the seashre , and began testing pebbles. He knew that if he picked up nrmal pebbles and threw them dwn again because they were cld, he might pick up the same pebbles hundreds f times. S, when he felt ne that was cld, he threw it int the sea. He spent a whle day ding this but nne f them was the tuchstne. Yet he went n and n this way. Pick up a pebble. Cld—thrw it int the sea. Pick up anther. Thrw it int the sea. The days stretched int mnths and the mnths int years.
One day, hwever, abut midafternn, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it int the sea befre he realized what he had dne. He was used t thrwing each pebble int the sea as sn as he picked it up. S when the ne he wanted came alng, he still threw it away.
