Whether it be a person, an animal, or even an insect, a mother's instincts(本能)are never wrong. This idea rings true for a mother cat who acted fast and sought out help when her kittens were in trouble. This mother cat's quick thinking may have just saved her babies.
In the urban district of Izmir in western Turkey, a cat walked into a regular hospital holding a kitten in her mouth. As the mother cat moved through the hospital, people were surprised to see such a sight, but let her pass. The mother cat asked for help, crying for a long time. She was familiar to the hospital staff, who had been leaving her food and water outside, but they were unaware that she had given birth to kittens.
The mother cat was concerned for her young because they weren't able to open their eyes. After the doctors looked at the kittens, they noticed that they were suffering from eye infections. One of the doctors recalls, “We consulted with vets(兽医)and gave medicine as described. When the kittens opened their eyes a short time later, we were excited.” Later, they were sent to an animal hospital for further care. The cats are now up for adoption and will hopefully find loving forever homes.
When it comes to mother cats and kittens, kittens completely depend on mothers for the first few months of their lives. Because they are blind and almost deaf until about two or three weeks old, the mother cat must protect them from any threat or danger. Without the mother cat's help, the kittens may not make it to adulthood.
As shown by the mother cat in Turkey, a mother's love and protection knows no bounds. Whether the mom is a human or a cat, mothers will always look out for their babies and make sure they are safe and healthy.
    24. Why did the mother cat show up in the hospital?
    A. To seek out food.
    B. To express thanks.
    C. To get her babies treated.
    D. To give birth to her babies.
    25. How did the doctors help the baby cat?
    A. They built them a home.
    B. They adopted all of them.
    C. They gave them right medicine.
    D. They operated on them immediately.
    26. What makes newly-born cats dependent on their mothers?
    A. Their physical state.
    B. Their eating habit.
    C. Their appearance.
    D. Their behavior.
    27. What can we learn from the story?
    A. A cat has nine lives.
    B. Love makes a difference.
    C. One good turn deserves another.
    D. God helps those who help themselves.
    C
Can snacking be a key element of a healthy lifestyle? If your first response is “No!”, here’s a chance to update your opinions. Some of us were raised with the advice of “Never eat between meals”, which can protect our teeth from sweets. Yet there can be significant advantages of snacking on healthy foods. Researchers have found that eating frequent mini-meals offers health benefits. Dr. David Jenkins and colleagues at the University of Toronto have reported some remarkable advantages.
In one study, participants were randomly divided into two groups and both groups were given the same type and amount of food over a two-week period. One group consumed three meals a day. For those having a “Nibbling Diet”, food was divided into 17 mini-meals a day. After two weeks, the nibblers had reduced their blood cholesterol (胆固醇) levels by more than 15 percent. Cortisol (皮质醇), a stress indicator, was reduced by 17 percent. Average serum insulin (血清胰岛素) levels of nibblers were reduced by 28 percent. With less insulin, the body is less likely to convert loads of calories into body fat.
Also, you may think eating concentrated sources of fat or sugar (or both) will pack the weight into your body. However, see below for some examples of healthy snacks:
Nuts are high in fat so keep portions moderate.
However, the fat comes with a wealth of minerals and protective substances. For growing youngsters, high-energy adults, athletes and those who have difficulty maintaining their weight, nuts are a great solution.
Dried fruits (raisins, currants, apricots) help you stock up on iron. If you tend to feel cold in winter, keep raisins handy. When your blood sugar drops, you’ll have an instant remedy. Fresh fruit is also a great choice.
    28. Why does the author propose a question at the beginning of the passage?
    A. To raise the readers’ awareness of refusing snacks.
    B. To arouse the readers’ interest in the topic.
    C. To show the significance of healthy lifestyles.
    D. To emphasize the importance of eating snacks.
    29. What do the underlined words “Nibbling Diet” in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. Not eating too much food at a time.
    B. Eating many snacks at a time.
    C. Eating food gently each time.
    D. Eating food quickly each time.
    30. What can be inferred from the passage?
    A. The nibblers are more likely to pack the weight into their body.
    B. More insulin helps the body to burn off excess calories.
    C. Having snacks high in fat or sugar doesn’t necessarily put on weight.
    D. Eating a considerable amount of nuts is a brilliant choice for everyone.
    31. Who can benefit from dried fruits in daily life?
    A. An athlete who needs to maintain his weight.
    B. A child who is eager to grow up quickly.
    C. A girl who wants to warm herself in winter.
    D. A patient who longs to decrease his blood sugar.
    D
China’s historic 23-day Chang’e 5 mission has not only obtained precious rock and soil samples from the moon, but has also brought back a group of seeds that traveled the furthest in the nation’s agricultural and forestry histories. More than 30 kinds of seeds were placed inside Chang’e 5 spacecraft and orbited around the moon for about 15 days.
Scientists wished to check what would happen to the seeds after being exposed to extraterrestrial(地外的)forces in lunar orbit and also hoped they could develop beneficial mutations (突变). This mission offered good opportunities to scientists, which enabled them to deepen their studies on the effect of cosmic rays on the growth and evolution of life on Earth.
Space-based mutation breeding refers to the process of exposing seeds to forces such as micro gravity, vacuums and cosmic radiation during a spaceflight and then sending them back to Earth for further observation and planting. Researchers observe and examine several generations of plants grown from space-bred seeds and investigate their mutations — some are positive and desirable while others are negative. Those with positive mutations will be kept and analyzed, and will be introduced to farmers after their certification and approval.
Space breeding can generate mutations faster and more conveniently than ground-based experiments and can bring about some desirable traits that are otherwise hard to introduce. Compared with natural or conventionally bred types of plants, space-developed versions with positive mutations usually feature higher nutritional content, greater annual yields, shorter growth periods and better resistance to diseases and insect pests.
China conducted its first space breeding experiment in 1987. Since then, hundreds of kinds of seeds and seedlings have traveled with dozens of Chinese spaceships. Space breeding has helped to produce more than 200 new types of mutated plants in China that have been approved for large-scale cultivation, ranging from grains to vegetables and fruits. The Chang’e 5 robotic mission returned 1,731 grams of lunar rock and soil to Earth, marking a historic accomplishment 44 years after the last lunar substances were taken back.
    32. Why were the seeds placed inside Chang’e 5?
    A. To pick out the fittest for mutations.
    B. To understand extraterrestrial forces.
    C. To study the intensity of cosmic rays.
    D. To expose them to a special environment.
    33. What do we know about space-based mutation breeding?
    A. It is not a time-consuming process.
    B. Mutations develop in a random way.
    C. It often brings about desirable effects.
    D. Approval will be granted to mutated plants.
    34. What’s the author’s attitude toward space breeding?
    A. Skeptical. B. Cautious.
    C. Objective. D. Appreciative.
    35. What is the best title of the passage?
    A. Space-bred Seeds Offer Great Chances B. Chang’e 5 Returns with a Big Package
    C. Plant Mutations Result in a Better Life D. Seeds from Space Mark a New History

Having struggled with financial difficulties for six months and failing to find a way out, I had to close my technology writing business. Fortunately, I found a new job as a salesperson and soon got a client. At the time, I wondered if it was too good to be true.
By the second month, something didn’t seem right, and I developed a bad feeling about the client and the work. When the third month’s check didn’t arrive on time, I sent the client an e-mail to find out what was going on. But there was no reply. Then I sent another e-mail, and another. The check never arrived, and I never heard from the client again. With no hope in sight, I hit rock bottom. Panic replaced cautious optimism along with my last self-confidence.
I hid myself from friends and locked myself in my room. One night, the phone rang. The call was from Eric, a friend of mine from high school. When he was in high school, he told me many times about his parents’ divorce and his loss of confidence in the college entrance examination. During the difficult time, I gave him much comfort and encouragement. Later, he went to college and was always grateful for what I had done.
After the greetings, I told my problems and challenges, hoping my friend would say something comforting. What I didn’t expect was a string of sharp words. “What is wrong with you? You can do anything you want to do,” he said. “You are a writer, so start writing. Write for magazine.” “Write for magazine? Are you out of your mind? I don’t know the first thing about writing for magazine, let alone write things that anyone would want to read. And I have to know where I can send an application form-to what magazine and to what editor,” I shouted at him.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Surprisingly, I felt a little better after the shouting.

M: How many students passed the physics exam in your class?
W: 40, but 8 students in the class failed. Two students didn't attend the exam because of illness.
    Text 2
W: The movie doesn’t start until later. I was thinking we could get some food first.
M: I’m not that hungry. I still need to get my mom a Christmas present. Maybe we could check out a few stores?
W: Sure. Let me just grab a snack before we go.
    Text 3
W: The admission fee of the gallery is ten dollars per person. I think that’s pretty expensive for a single exhibit.
M: But if we have student cards, we can get in for two.
    W: Really? Let’s have a try.
    Text 4
W: Welcome to Chase Bank. How may I help you today?
M: I’d like to open a savings account, please. I already have a checking account and a credit card here.
W: Wonderful! If you can just show me your ID and your bank card, we’ll get started right away!
    Text 5
M: This class is so hard! I should have stayed with chemistry. Geometry is just not my cup of tea.
W: I’m in applied math, and it’s definitely the hardest course I’ve ever taken.
    Text 6
W: Do you like going to live football matches?
M: Oh, yes, I love it.
W: Is it better than watching them on TV?
M: Well, you don't really see as much as you do on TV.
W: Oh, why do so many people go to live matches?
M: That's different. On TV you don't really feel the atmosphere. You can't sing along with the chants and songs at home.
    Text 7
W: I don’t think I’m going to find it. I’ve searched everywhere in the house for my watch. It’s not on the table in my bedroom where I usually leave it. I honestly can’t think of where else it could be.
M: Is that why you’re out here? You think you left it in the yard?
W: Where else could it be? I only went between the house and the car yesterday. After Amy called and told me she wasn’t coming over anymore, I decided to just relax inside all day. I’ve checked every room.
M: OK. Well, Amy just called up and said she is coming over. How about the three of us search together?
W: That’s a good idea. Three pairs of eyes are better than one. I will take a short break and think about the paths I traveled yesterday. Maybe I will remember something.
M: Good idea. While you do that, I will check the laundry. I hope it wasn’t washed by accident. That would be a shame if it were ruined in the washing machine.
    Text 8
M: Hi, Sue, how is your study in China?
W: Hi, Frank. It's fine. What about yours?
M: Not bad. I'm finishing my Chinese course, though.

M: I like it. But I think it's time to step into the real world, find a job, and experience the social life.
W: Do you have some plans?
M: Well, first I want to work as an engineer. And then, I want to set up a charity to help children left behind by their parents who go to big cities to seek their fortune.
W: It sounds good. I just began the course on art this term and have another two terms to go before I graduate.
M: Good for you. You will make it as you always do. Time to go. Bye.
    W: Bye!
    Text 9

M: Well, yeah, there are a few here that might interest us. Here’s one for just 400 dollars. But it only has one bedroom, near Lake Street.
W: Well let me see what the cheapest two-bedroom apartment is. Oh, here’s one on Market Street. It’s a real bargain, only 350 dollars. But it doesn’t have any furniture.
M: Well, it costs a lot to buy all the furniture.
W: Oh, here’s another one for just over 400 dollars. This sounds very interesting. It’s on South Street. That’s a nice area.
M: Yes, it’s quiet. Did you say two bedrooms?
    W: Yes, at 415 dollars.
M: Why don’t we go and have a look?
    W: OK. I’ll give them a call.
    Text 10
M: OK! So my talk tonight is called Psychology in Advertising, but I’m going to start with a little story. In the 18th century, hardly anyone in Prussia ate potatoes or rice, because the main meal for almost everyone was bread. But there was a problem with bread. In those days, sometimes the wheat didn’t grow very well, people, especially poor people, would have nothing to eat.
So when the king called Frederick heard about the potato, he immediately ordered everyone in the country to start growing potatoes. But to his surprise, they refused. Frederick was a very clever man, and although there were no psychologists in 1774, he certainly had a talent for understanding the psychology of his people. So he soon came up with a very interesting plan. First, he planted potatoes in his palace garden. Next, he sent soldiers to guard it. As soon as people saw the garden and the soldiers, they showed great curiosity, asking each other, “What could be in that field that is worth so much?” And of course, as soon as they found out that the field was full of potatoes, they all wanted some. You see, once people believed they were not allowed to eat potatoes, they immediately wanted to have them. And that’s a wise try.

Compared with natural or conventionally bred types of plants, space-developed versions with positive mutations usually feature higher nutritional content, greater annual yields, shorter growth periods and better resistance to diseases and insect pests.”(与地面实验相比,太空育种可以更快更方便地产生突变,并能带来一些本来很难引入的理想性状。与自然或常规培育的植物类型相比,具有正突变的空间发育版本通常具有更高的营养含量、更高的年产量、更短的生长期和更好的抗病虫害能力。)可推知,作者对太空育种持赞赏的态度。故选D项。

Surprisingly, I felt a little better after the shouting. After a short silence, Eric replied in a firm voice. “I always remember what you said when I was in trouble. You said ‘No one can get you out of trouble but yourself.’” Hearing that, I was speechless and struck by the fact that it was easier to convince others than to convince myself. Inspired by Eric’s words, I started searching for magazines the next day and finally found one that accepted online contributions with various topics. Then I began to prepare my application form.
On finishing the application form I sent it to the editor. Luckily, two days later I received a positive response and an invitation to write. At first, I only wrote articles I was expert in. Gradually, I began trying new types. One day, much to my amazement, one of my articles appeared on the first page of the magazine! Since then, I have been on my way to becoming an excellent writer. That definitely should be credited to Eric. It was he who enlightened me and helped me regain confidence to face challenges in my life.
