Bookstores, like wines . have different notes, different flavors, each one distinct. There are the musty, quirky ones with random piles and dusty rows, usually with both used and new books. There are the small indie stores charming and cozy. Then there's the big-box with long, straight rows, bright and dustless, usually boasting a cafe and a kids section you can get lost in.
My adoration for bookstores is, without a doubt, partly nostalgic(怀旧的). I came of age in the late 1990s, when Amazon was mostly known as a river in South America, phones were not smart and bookstores were dotted around cities.
When my husband and I were dating, our go-to date was to get coffee and walk around bookstores together. It was the best. Wed move slowly, meandering through the religion section, the memoirs, fiction, poetry, history. I’d pick up a title I’d heard about and sit in the aisle reading a chapter. I’d find one I’d never heard of and scan the back cover. Wed sip our coffee and read each other interesting paragraphs from books we found.
I fell for bookstores and for my husband at the same time. So when stores began closing down all over America,we were both sorrowful. What were we supposed to do with a night out now?
In a recent very informal and unscientific poll(调查) of my friends,I found that many of us love and miss physical bookstores. Friends described the feeling of discovery and exploration, the calming serenity of being surrounded by words and ideas. My wise friend Greg said,“Bookstores are like the best parties; You may discover a new friend or join an unexpected conversation with a simple turn of your head."
l dream of an America with streets full of independent bookstores whose inventories(库存清单)contradict one another. But right now I'm rooting for any brick-and-mortar(实体的) book store, really. Any place that reminds us that the material world is beautiful and worth spending time in. Any place where we can learn how to exist together in communities chock-full of words and ideas. Any place where we may discover something unpredictable and new. And if there's coffee nearby, even better.
24. What do the underlined words in Paragraph 2 suggest about the late 1990s?

A. They are easily out-of-date.
B. They are a source of inspiration.
C. They are attractive to partygoers.
D. They are intended for conversations.
27. Why did the author write this article?
A. To share her affection for bookstores.
B. To introduce different types of bookstores.
C. To criticize the lack of public enthusiasm for reading.
D. To explore the reasons for the disappearance of bookstores.

As restaurants, malls and movie theaters fill back up with people, the workplace has remained nearly empty. This is partly driven by how common remote work has become in society. People have invested in creating workspaces in their homes, relocated to smaller towns and even taken their work to vacation resorts. Now,with an easing pandemic and slowing economy, companies are increasingly trying to draw employees back into the office. But many just don't want to go.
Though seen as a necessity during the pandemic, some business leaders doubt whether the current level of remote work is sustainable. And they're right. A fully virtual workplace misses some of the key drivers for performance and productivity, which are top of mind right now for businesses facing the prospect of a potential recession(衰退),Understandably, they want workers back in the office because they're preparing for a more competitive environment, which calls for maximizing efficiency. Fully remote work doesn't cultivate the level of interpersonal relationships that business leaders see as vital to workplace innovation.
When companies are responding to market shifts and economic stresses, new ideas, problem solving and brainstorming all become essential. And brainstorming sessions are much easier to conduct in person, where workers can exchange their ideas in conference rooms or shared work spaces. Remote workers, meanwhile, are more prone to distractions at home that can disrupt their concentration and participation.
lt's not just what happens in formal meetings that adds value. It's also the organic connections and culture-building that occurs when workers run into each other in the hallways or after a company gathering. lt's these spontaneous(自发的) opportunities to inquire into the details that are missed when one is working remotely.
Undoubtedly, there will be workers who don't agree. But leaders owe it to all share holders, including workers,to make the best policy decisions. Policy can't just make sense for workers. It must also make business sense in order to preserve opportunities for workers to work; it must make financial sense in order to protect opportunities for workers to earn a living.
28. What do we know about remote work?
A. It was popular in smaller towns.
B. It slowed down the economy.
C. It was necessary during the pandemic.
D. It brought people to public places.
29. Why do leaders want workers back in the office?
A. To improve workers’ efficiency.
B. To create a relaxed atmosphere.
C. To cultivate friendlier relationships.
D. To explore workers' potential.
30.According to the author, what must be prioritized when the best policy decisions are made?
A. The ambitions of the leaders.
B. The comfort of the employees.
C. The interests of the businesses.
D. The ability of the shareholders.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Fully Remote Work Likely to Disappear
B. Remote Workers Losing Their Jobs
C. Policymakers Caught in a Dilemma
D. Companies Struggling with Slowing Economy

In a former gold mine a mile underground, inside a. titanium tank(钛储罐)filled with a rare liquified gas, scientists have begun the search for what so far has been unfindable ; dark matter.
Scientists are trying to understand why the universe is not what it seems. One part of the mystery is dark matter, which has by far most of the mass in the universe. Astronomers know it's there even though it's nowhere to be seen, because when they measure the stars and other regular matter in galaxies, they find that there is not nearly enough gravity to hold them together. If nothing else was out there, galaxies would be quickly flying apart.
The race to solve this enormous mystery has brought one team to the depths under Lead,South Dakota.
The idea is that a mile of dirt and rock,a giant tank,a second tank and the purest titanium in the world will block nearly all the cosmic rays and particles (粒子) around us every day. But dark matter particles, scientists think, can avoid all those obstacles. They hope one will fly into the liquid xenon(疝气) in the inner tank and smash into a xenon nucleus(原子核),revealing its existence in a flash of light seen by a device called“the time projection chamber.”
Scientists announced Thursday that the five-year,$60 million search finally got underway two months ago after a delay caused by the pandemic. So far the device has found...nothing. At least no dark matter.
And if all their calculations and theories are right, they figure they'll see only a couple signs of dark matter a year. By the time the experiment finishes, the chance of finding dark matter with this device is probably less than 50% but more than 10%”.
While that's far from a sure thing,“you need a little enthusiasm,”said Kevin Lesko,a physicist at Lawrence Berkeley Naonal Laboratory." You don't go into rare search physics without some hope of finding something.”
These scientists tried to a similar, smaller experiment here years ago. After coming up empty, they figured they had to go much bigger. Another large-scale experiment is underway in Italy run by a rival team, but no results have been announced so far.
32.What do we know about dark matter?
A. It is a rare liquified gas.
B. It is invisible and hard to find.
C. It is unknown to scientists.
D. It is a form of gravity in the galaxies.
33. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The result of the experiment.
B. The design of the experiment.
C. The reason for conducting the experiment.
D. The importance of the experiment.

A. Its success is guaranteed.
B. It is almost finished.
C. It has been fruitless so far.
D. It is the first attempt in the field.
35. Which of the following might Kevin Lesko agree with?
A. Don't count your chickens.
B. Two heads are better than one.
C. Strike while the iron is hot.
D. Every cloud has a silver lining.

Traditional Chinese tea ceremonies are often held to welcome guests into one's home. If you want to perform one, start by gathering all the tools you'll need. 36 Once you get hold of one, follow the steps for performing a traditional Chinese tea ceremony.
Prepare the Chinese tea set and appreciate the tea.
To prepare the Chinese tea set, heat water in a kettle. Then place the teapot and teacups in the bowl and pour the heated water over them to warm up the tea set. 37 In a traditional Chinese tea ceremony, the tea is passed around for participants to examine and admire its appearance, aroma, and quality.
38
Using the tea-leaf holder, pour the tea leaves into the teapot. This step is called “the black dragon enters the palace”. Heating water to the proper temperature is important when making Chinese tea, and ideal temperatures vary by tea type.
Next, place the teapot into the bowl, raise the kettle at shoulder length, and pour the heated water into the teapot until it overflows. Place the lid on the teapot.
Discard the tea and pour to brew(泡茶)again.
Pour the brewed tea into the tea pitcher. Using the tea pitcher, fill the tea cups with tea. But do not drink the tea. Instead,it is discarded.
Keeping the same tea leaves and holding the kettle just above the teapot, pour the properly heated water into the teapot. The water should be poured just above the teapot so as to not remove the flavor from the tea leaves too quickly. Place the lid on the teapot. 39
Time to enjoy your tea.
Pour all the tea into the tea pitcher, and then pour that tea into your tea snifters. It is good manners that tea drinkers hold the cup with both hands enjoy the tea's aroma and take a sip. 40 The first sip should be small; the second sip is the largest. main sip; the third is to enjoy the after taste and empty the cup.
A. Watch out for the brewing temperatures.
B. Brew the tea leaves at proper temperatures.
C. The cup should be drunk in sips of different sizes.
D. Then, remove the teapot and cups from the bowl.
E. It is finally time for you to enjoy a nice cup of Chinese tea.
F. A traditional Chinese tea set can be bought at Chinatowns around the world.
G. The size of the tea leaves and their quality determine the length of the brewing time.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
l was turning ten in the summer of 1959.On a warm evening while at the dinner table, my mother announced we were taking a trip to Niagara Falls when summer vacation started so that we could celebrate my birthday there.
lt all sounded incredibly good until Mom said we would be driving to Canada,As usual,my father would do all the driving while my mother managed the directions.
l looked over at my sister,Marlene, who was three years younger than me and rolled my eyes. She giggled and did the same. It wasn't that I didn't like car rides ---- but my Dad usually took a wrong turn along the way and Mom would complain. "You were supposed to turn right according to the map like I told you,but you made a left.” My Dad would get annoyed and growl. My mother would end the conversation with“I can't believe we're arguing over this.”Later, they'd apologize and make up until the next wrong turn.
Driving in the car also meant I'd share the back seat with my sister, which was not part of what I considered a pleasant journey.
“Hey,can we take a plane there instead?”I asked between mouthfuls of hamburger and Frenchfries. Sometimes, when Dad had a day off from work,we would drive out to Idlewild Airport to watch the planes take off and land. I always hoped one day Pd get to sit in my own seat on one of those planes. It would be cool to get high up and then stick my head out a window. Windows on planes do open, don't they?
“Sorry honey, maybe next time,”my mother replied as she and my father exchanged glances. l turned to my sister, hoping she'd say she wanted to get on a plane, but she stuck her tongue out at me and giggled.
Didn't they get it? I was in desperate need of a plane ride, and I needed something cool to talk about with my friends when we got home.“Sitting in the back seat of the car sucks,”I blurted out.
“Jay!" My mother shouted. “Watch your mouth ! ”
“ok, sorry, but I really wanted to go by plane."
“This conversation's over.”My father growled." If you're finished eating,go to your room."注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
We left two days later on Saturday morning in our car.
