It was several years ag when my wife asked me t meet her at the lcal department stre n Black Friday mrning. They had advertised a child’s bike that she wanted t purchase fr ur sn. We std with a very large crwd, waiting fr the manager t blw the whistle. After a while the whistle blew. It was like thrwing a basket f chum int a tank f sharks. I tld my wife that if we btained a bike, fine, but if we did nt, I was OK with that t.
As the bxes f bikes began t gradually decrease, I saw my pprtunity t wrap my hands arund the crner f ne f them. I lifted it ff and suddenly felt sme mild resistance. I lked up t see ne f the largest men I had ever seen in my life. Frightening was nt enugh t describe his presence. He was decrated with numerus leather belts with metal buttns arund bth arms and even his neck. Tatts (纹身) were an bvius passin f his.
I started t lsen the bx but he gently pushed it back in my directin and back int my hands. He then directed it int my shpping cart. He lked at me, smiled, and said, “Merry Christmas.”
My wife and I went t the checkut, paid fr the bike and went hme. All the way hme I was thinking that this mment was by far the best Christmas gift I had ever received. The kindness f a human heart in a simple act f a stranger brke all precnceived ntins (先入为主) I may have had. I will never frget it.

One f the csts f being lver f ld trees is the all-t-frequent lss f a beautiful sul yu’ve grwn fnd f. Last summer was harder than mst fr ld trees and their human supprters. The spring’s nnstp rains flded sils and caused rt systems f many large, ld trees t rt in part. Then, when the summer came, trees culd nt tap deep surces f water that wuld nrmally have maintained them. Many valuable ld trees died.
When I vlunteered n the Munt Rainier Tree Cmmissin, I heard frm many peple cncerned abut their trees. We had little t ffer them. That’s because public and private urban tree resurces and prgrams were aimed almst entirely at planting trees and nt at all maintaining trees. N state r prvince prgram that I culd find prvided any financial resurces fr maintaining tree health. Small and under-resurced cities such as urs were n their wn.
This is backward. Scientists are learning that large, ld trees are the mst valuable, especially in cities. They put n wd fastest and take the mst carbn ut f the air. They harbr the mst wildlife. They can lwer summer temperatures by 20 degrees r mre. In a recent study, researchers fund that Bstn wuld get mre benefit frm keeping the trees it has alive than frm planting new trees. There’s reasn t think this finding wuld apply in ther cities, t.
Nw, ur public and private tree prgrams ften ignre ld trees until it is t late. As lng as we abandn ur ld trees, planting mre is merely t keep pace with grwing lsses. We want trees t help prtect us, but we leave them unprtected. Cnsider this in the human wrld: Nbdy wuld send baby int the wrld and expect it t just make it. Children need caring fr and it’s why we have schls and child health-insurance prgrams. We culd get s much mre ut f ur trees if we just put a little mre int them.
    24. What des the underlined part in Paragraph 1 suggest?
    A. Strng determinatin t plant trees.
    B. Real regret at grwing ld trees.
    C. Great cncern abut tree prblems.
    D. Deep lve fr valuable ld trees.
    25. Why was the authr almst pwerless t help peple wrried abut their trees?

    B. The authrs’ knwledge f maintaining tree health was limited.
    C. The fcus f the tree resurces and prgrams was n tree planting.
    D. The rganizatin the authr vlunteered n was shrt f tree experts.
    26. The authr argues in Paragraph 3 by ________.
    A. cmparing different cases
    B. presenting research findings
    C. referring t scientists’ sayings
    D. carrying ut sme experiments
    27. Why des the authr give the example f nursing babies in the end?
    A. T stress the imprtance f tree insurance prgrams.
    B. T shw the clse cnnectin between trees and babies.
    C. T advcate prtecting trees as humans care fr babies.
    D. T persuade human beings t pay mre attentin t babies.
    C
Time and hw we experience it have always puzzled us. Physicists have created fascinating theries, but their time is measured by a pendulum (钟摆) and is nt psychlgical time, which leaps with little regard t the clck r calendar. As smene wh understd the distinctin bserved, “When yu sit with a nice girl fr tw hurs it seems like a minute, but when yu sit n a ht stve, a minute seems like tw hurs.”
Psychlgists have lng nticed that larger units f time, such as mnths and years, fly n swifter wings as we age. They als nte that the mre time is structured with schedules and appintments, the mre rapidly it seems t pass. Fr example, a day at the ffice flies cmpared with a day at the beach.
Expectatin and familiarity als make time seem t flw mre rapidly. Almst all f us have had the experience f driving smewhere we’ve never been befre. Surrunded by unfamiliar scenery, with n real idea f when we’ll arrive, we experience the trip as lasing a lng time. But the return trip, althugh exactly as lng, seems t take far less time. The nvelty f the utward jurney has becme rutine.
When days becme as identical as beads (小珠子) n a string, they mix tgether, and even mnths becme a single day. T cunter this, try t find ways t interrupt the structure f yur day-- t stp time, s t speak.
Learning smething new is ne f the ways t slw the passage f time. One f the reasns the days f ur yuth seems t be full and lng is that these are the days f learning and discvery. Fr many f us learning ends when we leave schl, but this desn’t have t be.
    28. What is the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 used t shw?
    A. Psychlgical time is quite puzzling.
    B. Time shuld nt be measured by a pendulum.
    C. Physical time is different frm psychlgical time.
    D. Physical thery has nthing t d with the true sense f time.
    29. Why d units f time fly faster as we grw lder?
    A. Our sense f time changes.
    B. We spend less time at the beach.
    C. Mre time is structured and scheduled.
    D. Time is structured with t many appintments.
    30. What des “nvelty” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
    A. excitement B. unfamiliarity C. imaginatin D. amusement
    31. What is the purpse f the passage?
    A. T give varius explanatins abut time.
    B. T describe hw we experience time physically.
    C. T shw the differences f tw kinds f time.
    D. T explain why time flies and hw t slw it dwn.
    D
Hardware in general, and smartphnes in particular, have becme a huge envirnmental and health prblem in the Glbal Suth’s landfill sites (垃圾填埋场).
Electrnic waste(e-waste) currently takes up 5 percent f all glbal waste, and it is set t increase rapidly as mre f us wn mre than ne smartphne, laptp and pwer bank. They end up in places like Agbgblshie n the utskirts f Ghana’s capital, Accra. It is the biggest e-waste dump in the wrld, where 10, 000 infrmal wrkers walk thrugh tns f abandned gds as part f an infrmal recycling prcess. They risk their health searching fr the precius metals that are fund in abandned smartphnes.
But Agbgblshie shuld nt exist. The Basel Cnventin, a 1989 treaty, aims t prevent develped natins frm unauthrized dumping f e-waste in less develped cuntries. The e-waste industry, hwever, circumvents the regulatins by exprting e-waste labelled as “secndhand gds” t pr cuntries like Ghana, knwing full well that it is heading fr a landfill site.
A recent reprt fund Agbgblshie cntained sme f the mst dangerus chemicals. This is nt surprising: smartphnes cntain chemicals like mercury (水银), lead and even arsenic(砷). Reprtedly, ne egg frm a free-range chicken in Agbgblshie cntained a certain chemical which can cause cancer and damage the immune system at a level that’s abut 220 times greater than a limit set by the Eurpean Fd Safety Authrity(EFSA). Mst wrryingly, these pisnus chemicals are free t pllute the brader sil and water system. This shuld cncern us all, since sme f Ghana’s tp exprts are cca and nuts.
Sme gvernments have started t take respnsibility fr their cnsumers’ waste. Fr example, Germany has started a prject that includes a sustainable recycling Hardware in general, and smartphnes in particular, have becme a huge envirnmental and health prblem in the Glbal Suth’s landfill sites (垃圾填埋场).
system at Agbgblshie, alng with a health clinic fr wrkers. Hwever, gvernments cannt slve the prblem alne, as there is an almst limitless cnsumer demand fr hardware, especially when gvernments green plicies are fcused n issues like climate change.
Only the manufacturers can fix this. A mre ecnmically sustainable and plitically pssible slutin is thrugh encuraging hardware manufacturers t make the repair, reuse and recycling f hardware prfitable, r at least cst-neutral.
    32. What can we infer frm Paragraph 2?
    A. Electrnic prducts need imprving urgently.
    B. Electrnic waste is t cmplex t get fully recycled.
    C. Electrnic waste requires mre landfill sites acrss Ghana.
    D. Electrnic pllutin is a burning questin in Agbgblshie.
    33. What des the underlined wrd “circumvents” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Tightens. B. Ablishes.
    C. Avids. D. Fllws.
    34. What shuld be the biggest cncern accrding t the text?
    A. The vilatin f EFSA’s standards.
    B. The lack f diversity in Ghana’s exprts.
    C. The damage t chicken’s immune system.
    D. The threat f plluted fd arund the wrld.
    35. What des the authr think is the best slutin t the e-waste prblem?
    A. Manufacturers’ develping a sustainable hardware ecnmy.
    B. Gvernments’ adjusting their green plicies abut e-waste.
    C. Reducing custmers’ demands fr electrnic prducts.
    D. Letting gvernments take n the main respnsibility.

37 It is cmmn fr runners t push themselves abut the same amunt each time, running similarly challenging runs and gradually increasing difficulty. Outstanding runners, hwever, alternate an easy, resting run with a very challenging ne.
