In 1929, three years after his flight ver the Nrth Ple, the American explrer, R.E. Byrd, successfully flew ver the Suth Ple fr the first time. Thugh, at first, Byrd and his men were able t take a great many phtgraphs f the muntains that lay belw, they sn ran int serius truble. At ne pint, it seemed certain that their plane wuld crash. It culd nly get ver the muntains if it rse t 10,000 feet. Byrd at nce rdered his men t thrw ut tw heavy fd sacks.
The plane was then able t rise and it cleared the muntains by 400 feet. Byrd nw knew that he wuld be able t reach the Suth Ple which was 300 miles away, fr there were n mre muntains in sight. The aircraft was able t fly ver the endless white plains withut difficulty.
