Q: There is a Chinese idiom(习语) “loumajiao”. It means that a secret has been revealed. Where does the idiom come from?
A: In one story, “loumajiao” is connected to Empress (皇后) Ma. She was the wife of Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty.
In the past, people thought small feet were more beautiful than big feet. So young girls would bind (捆绑) their feet to prevent them from growing bigger.
But the young Ma liked to practice martial arts (武术). She didn’t want to bind her feet. So her feet grew larger than other women’s feet.
After she became empress, Ma hid her feet under a long gown (袍子). One day, when she was sitting in a palanquin (轿子) near a busy street, a strong wind blew her gown up. She was not able to hide her feet in time. Many people saw her feet and quickly spread the word across the country. The idiom “loumajiao” comes from this story.
However, research shows that “loumajiao” may have in fact come from a kind of ancient celebration.
The qilin is a mythical creature(虚构的生灵) that stands for good luck. In ancient times, people would paint a “qilin skin” on a large piece of cloth. They put the cloth on a horse so that the horse would look like a qilin. However, the horse’s feet were hard to cover up and could easily be seen. So as time passed, “loumajiao” came to mean “revealing a secret”.
    47. What does the underlined word “reveal” probably mean?
    A. 传播 B. 隐藏 C. 泄露 D. 分享
    48. Empress Ma __________.
    A. didn't like martial arts B. hated binding her feet
    C. the only wife of Zhu Yuanzhang D. liked to wear long gown
    49. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. There are three stories connected with “loumajiao”.
    B. The qilin is a symbol of good luck and much wealth.
    C. “Loumajiao” has a history of more than 1000 years.
    D. There are no ways to prove the origin(起源) of “loumajiao”.
    50. Where may you read this article most probably?
    A. In a culture newspaper. B. From a science report.
    C. In a western story. D. From a social survey.

When I learned that my 71-year-old mother was playing Scrabble — a word game — against herself, I knew I had to do something. My husband suggested we give her a computer to play against. I wasn’t sure my mother was ready for it. After all, it had taken 10 years to persuade(说服) her to buy an electric cooker. Even so, we packed up our old computer and sent it to my parents’ home. And so began my mother’s adventure(冒险) in the world of computers.
It also marked the beginning of an unusual teaching task for me. I’ve taught people of all ages, but I never thought I would be teaching my mother how to do anything. She has been the one teaching me all my life: to cook and sew, to enjoy the good times and put up with the bad. Now it was my turn to give something back.
It wasn’t easy at the beginning. There was so much to explain and to introduce. Slowly but surely, my mother caught on, making notes in a little notebook. After a few months of Scrabble and other games, I decided it was time to introduce her to word processing. This proved to be a bigger challenge to her, so I gave her some homework. I asked her to write me a letter, using different letter types, colors and spaces.
“Are you demanding(要求) with your kindergarten pupils?” she asked.
“No, of course not,” I said. “They already know how to use a computer.”
My mother isn’t the only one experiencing a fast personal growth period. Thanks to the computer, my father has finally got over his phone allergy(过敏反应). For as long as I can remember, any time I called, my mother would answer. Dad and I have had more phone conversations in the last two months than we’ve had in the past 20 years.
    51. What does the writer do?
    A. She is a cook. B. She is a teacher.
    C. She is a housewife. D. She is a computer engineer.
    52. The writer decided to give her mother a computer __________.
    A. to let her have more chances to write letters B. to support her in doing her homework
    C. to help her through the bad times D. to make her life more enjoyable
    53. The writer asked her mother to write her a letter __________.
    A. because her mother had stopped using the telephone
    B. because she wanted to keep in touch with her mother
    C. so that her mother could practice what she had learned
    D. so that mother could be free from housework
    54. After the computer was brought home, the writer’s father __________.
    A. lost interest in cooking B. took more phone calls
    C. played more games D. began to use it
    四、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题1分, 满分5分)
    阅读下面短文,在表格内的空白处填入合适的答案(每格限填一词)。
There are many things you can do to keep friendship strong forever.
Trust is very important in keeping any relationship strong and long lasting. If you trust the person whom you have a good relationship with and the other person also trust you in the same way, then you two have a good relationship.
You can remember important dates of your friends such as their birthdays and wish them or give gifts to them on the special days. Friendship is not about money. You can find something small and inexpensive for their gifts or send online cards.
A friend should also always help others even when it is not very convenient. Being together with and being helpful to your friends always make your friendship deeper.
Sometimes distance makes relationships even closer. So, if you are far from your friends, there are many ways you can remain in touch. If there is anything that makes you happy, share it with your friends. Listen to their thoughts as well. If they have achieved something noticeable, congratulate them and celebrate with them.
I have seen good friendships go missing when there is unhealthy competition between two friends. Though this may not happen in many cases, it is better to keep this idea in mind since it may happen to you.
As far as I have seen and experienced, it will be better not to either lend money to or borrow money from your good friend. Of course, you have to do this with friends sometimes. But, attention should be paid so that your friendship may not end.

When people think about the victory of the Chinese women’s volleyball team at the 2019 World Cup, the name that first comes to our mind is probably Lang Ping, 59, one of China’s greatest sports stars and coaches. She plays so fiercely that people call her “Iron Hammer(铁榔头)”.

③ After 8 years of hard training and fighting, Lang finished her career as a volleyball player in 1986. In 1995, Lang became the head coach of the Chinese national team and led China to silver medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 1998 World Championships in Japan.
④ In 2013, she returned to the young national team after working abroad as a coach for 14 years. The team finally came back to the top at the 2015 World Cup. The next year, at the Rio Olympics, things didn’t go well at the very beginning. However, her team took home the gold medal at last, making her the first person to win an Olympic gold for volleyball both as a player and a coach. Lang once said, “Sometimes the chance is slim, but you still have to pull out all the stops”.
“The spirit of Chinese women’s volleyball team is to never give up. My duty as the coach is to guide this young team to carry on this spirit,” said Lang. The spirit is about more than sport. It also encourages people across the country to make China stronger.

China’s food delivery industry employs (雇) more than 6 million delivery workers, according to Sixth Tone. These workers can be seen on nearly every street in many Chinese cities. However, the job is becoming more dangerous.
An article in the Chinese magazine Portrait titled Food Deliverymen: Stuck in the System, shows just how difficult the job can be. It describes the physical and mental pressure that delivery workers face because of time limits set by food delivery apps. Delivering an order late, even by one second, brings about a fine (罚款).
The time limit has increased the risk of traffic accidents. According to a 2017 report, a serious injury or death involving (涉及) a delivery worker happens every 2.5 days in Shanghai. In September 2018, over half of all traffic violations (违规) in Guangzhou involved delivery workers.
According to the article, the time limit for each order is set by an algorithm (算法). If an order is finished within the time limit, the limit will be shortened for every delivery worker. But the algorithm doesn’t consider real-life situations, such as red lights and speed limits.  In response to the article, food delivery company Eleme said it will add a new feature to its delivery app. Customers will be given the choice to click a button that says“I’m willing to wait longer” in order to give delivery workers more time.
However, this change hasn’t pleased everyone.“What if these platforms force riders to take more orders if I click the button?” said Sun Run, a 15-year-old student from Hangzhou.“The apps should change the algorithms that set the time limit instead.”

What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.
However, we know that it is not enough just to be born with a good mind. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle(肌肉,).It needs exercise and the exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about.
The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent, On the other hand, if children are left alone with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.
Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool, then the child is more likely to keep doing foolish things. So it is better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as "That was a very clever thing you did "or" You are such a smart child.”
1.The underlined word "intelligent" probably means__________ .
    A. clever B. pretty or handsome C. important D. hopeful

    B. The less you use your mind, the more foolish you may become.
    C. Intelligence is the result of where and how you live.
    D. What makes a person bright or stupid is still under discussion.

A new study warns that about 30% of the world's population may not have enough water by the year 2025.
A private American organization called Population Action International did the new study. It says that more than 335,000,000 people in 28 countries lack enough water now. Most of the countries are in African or the Middle East.
PAI researcher Robert Engelman says that by the year 2025, about 3,000,000,000 people may lack water. At least 18 more countries are expected to have severe(严峻的)water problems. The demand for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount of water on earth stays the same.
Mr. Engelman says the population in the countries that lack water is growing faster than other parts of the world. He says population growth in these countries will continue.
The report says that lack of water in the future may result in several problems. It may bring about health problems. Lack of water often means drinking water is not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of the diseases spread by water. Lack of water may also result in more international conflicts(冲突).Countries may have to
compete for water in the future. Some countries now get 60% of their fresh water from other countries. It also says that lack of water would affect their economic development. This is because new industries often need a large amount of water when they are beginning.
The Population Action International study gives solutions to the water problem. One way, it says, is to use water for more than purpose. Another way is to teach people not to waste water. A third way is to use less water in agriculture(农 业 ).The report also says that long-term solutions(解决方案)to the water problem must include controls on population
    growth.

    四、任务型阅读(5分)
Most of us get our earliest life lessons from fairy tales(童话故事).However, when we grow up, we start to learn new things about life, especially that love doesn't always win, and that a frog is just a frog. Even so, our love for fairy tales never dies. Just look at cartoons like The Lion King and Frozen which have millions of fans young and old.
Fairy tales are all about the real world. But if children only see just one side of life, adults usually see the other. For example, in the 2014 film Maleficent, we're told the tale of Sleeping Beauty from the views of the evil(邪恶的)queen. Unlike the children's version(版本)of the story, we see that the queen wasn't born evil. Instead, she experiences great lossers, leading to her “evil" side .And in US writer James Garner's bedtime story books, he tells the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood(小红帽),but with a modern touch: When the wolf tells R ed Riding Hood that it isn't safe for a little girl to walk through the woods alone, she calls the wolf sexist(性别歧视者),which connects with today's women's rights movement.
Fairy tales aren't just stories our parents read to us at bedtime. They may usually start with "Once upon a time...", but as we grow older, we learn that every story doesn't always need a “Happily ever after” to be a good one.

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence(智力) developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. In some ways, our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a
genius(天才) out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than the one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. So the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is in some ways something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people is, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. So if we take two unrelated people at random(随机) from the population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on- birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environment. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We should soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this shows that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.
    1. The writer agrees that a man's intelligence is given to him _______.
    A. at birth B. through education
    C. both at birth and through education D. neither at birth nor through education
    2. If a child born with low intelligence, he can _________.
    A. become a genius
    B. still become a genius if he should be given special education
    C. reach his intelligence limits in rich surroundings
    D. not reach his intelligence in his life
    3. The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows ________.
    A. the importance of their intelligence

    B. the role of environment on intelligence
    C. the importance of their positions
    D. the part that birth plays
    C
Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother
Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can
they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call
it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(猎食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the "hurt" adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They
don't make nests. Instead, they get into other birds' nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive(收养的)parents feed them.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again. Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying "you can't fool Mother Nature." But maybe you can't trust her, either.
    1. A plover protects its young from a predator by_______.
    A. getting closer to its young B. driving away the adult predator
    C. leaving its young in another nest D. pretending to be hurt
    2. By "Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky" (paragraph 5), the writer means ______.
    A. chimps are ready to attack others B. chimps are sometimes dishonest
    C. chimps show envy towards the winners D. chimps can be selfish too
    3. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
    A. Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.
    B. The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner's hand.
    C. Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests.
    D. Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.
    4. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
    A. Do animals lie? B. Does Mother Nature fool animals?
    C. How do animals learn to lie? D. How does honesty help animals survive?

Many people catch a cold in the springtime or fall. It makes us wonder... if scientists can send a man to the moon, why can't they find a cure for the common cold? The answer is easy. There are actually hundreds of kinds of cold viruses(病毒) out there. You never know which one you will get, so there isn't a cure for each one.
When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. Blood rushes to your nose and cause a block in it. You feel terrible because you can't breathe well, but your body is actually eating the virus. Your temperature goes up and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting into your cells. You may feel miserable, hut actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold
Different people have different cures for Colds. In the United States and some other countries, for example, people might eat chicken soup to make themselves feel better. Some people take hot baths and drink warm liquids(流汁). Other people take medicine to stop Various symptoms(症状)
    of colds.
There is one interesting thing to note that some scientists say taking medicine when you have cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn't have a way to fight it and kill it.
Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There is a joke, however, on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this: It takes about one week to get over a cold if you don't take medicine, but it takes only seven days to get over a cold if you take medicine.

Every artist knows in his heart he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well but he wants t to be something that has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand what he wants to teach them, and what he wants them to learn from him.
What visual (视觉的)artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experience into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of countless billions of, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work, we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist.
Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and at rest; their choices indicate (指示)that these aspects of the world are worth looking at; that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary(当代的)artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even hey do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects.
If one painter chooses to paint a decaying ( 糜烂)leg and another lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something-all of which means that, consciously(有 意 识 地 ) or unconsciously,he is trying to teach us.

    D. One must look beyond shapes and colors to find what the artist is saying.

“Wow!” said Amy, “I have finished my homework and I'm going to paint a picture of our stairs. It's for a competition in the school tomorrow.”
“Do you need any help?”Mr.Green asked, “It's almost time for bed.”
“I'll be quick.”said Amy, “I wonder what colour to use.”
“Well. our stairs are brown,”said her father. “Thanks,Dad.”said Amy.
When she finished her picture, Any began playing with her brush which was still wet. Then something happened. She dropped the brush right on the picture! There in the middle of her picture was a blob(污 点 )brown paint!
“Oh,Dad! What will I do?”Amy cried. “My picture is ruined. And it's too late to paint another.”
“Let me see.”said her father. “The paint blob looks just like a spot on a dog.All you have to do is to draw a dog around the spot!”
“That's a wonderful idea!” cried Amy.She drew a dog around the blob of brown paint. “That looks just fine. You know, few things are as bad as they seem at first. With a little imagination, you can turn bad into good.”said Amy's father.
