Lng ag, many buildings arund Taiwan were made frm bricks surced frm Fujian Prvince. But this all changed when hundreds f brick f kilns ppped up all ver the island. Of the 130-plus brick-making kilns that nce perated in Kahsiung, the Sanhe Tile Kiln is the last ne standing. This traditinal brick and tile factry has been in peratin fr ver 100 years. Cnsidered a natinal treasure, the factry is part f the cultural heritage f the island.
At the Sanhe Tile Kiln, making quality bricks is serius business. Gd clay and water are essential, and frtunately, the Dashu District f Kahsiung has exceptinal clay and water. Wrkers dig clay ut f the grund and put it thrugh a machine t break it up. Water is then added, and the mixture is put int anther machine t frm clay blcks. When the blcks are the desired shape, they are set aside t dry. Then the bricks are stacked in the kiln. Next, wrkers start a fire with straw and slwly raise the kiln's temperature until it reaches 1000 degrees Celsius. Thrughut this prcess, the temperature must rise steadily r else the bricks will break.
