Cal Fire captain Shawn Raley barked evacuation (疏散) orders over the radio for the neighborhood of Sunset Terrace. The sky was red and the wind screamed. New fires lit in bushes and on roofs. A 24-year veteran of wildland fires, Raley had seen nearly everything, including swirling eddies of air called fire whirls. But he hadn’t seen anything like this.
At around 7:15 p. m., he drove toward areas in the wooded hills. He figured that residents would need help escaping. His headlights barely pierced the smoke, but he could see three bulldozers (推土机) inch past him on two-lane Buenaventura Boulevard. Don Andrews drove one; Terry Cummings and Jimmie Jones drove the other two. They were under swaying electrical line, and Raley shouted at them to move away.
In the driveway of a house, Raley spotted a Tesla with someone in the driver’s seat. Dr. Thiruvoipati Nanda Kumar had raced eight kilometres home from Vibra Hospital. His wife, Yasoda, and daughter, Sushma, hadn’t received an evacuation alert, and when the power cut out, their garage door wouldn’t open, locking their car inside.
“Go back!” Raley shouted at Kumar, sounding his siren.
“My wife and daughter are there. Can they come in?” Kumar said, pointing to Raley’s vehicle. He figured they’d be safest with the captain.
“Come in my truck?” Raley asked. “Yes.”
The women jumped into the back seat, coughing. Nearby, flames that climbed 30 metres burned their neighbours’ homes. Soon theirs would fall, as well.
“I’ll lead you out,” Raley yelled to Kumar. “Take your car.”
Debris (碎片) attacked the truck, cracking Raley’s windshield and breaking the other windows as the wind blew the vehicle off the road. The captain threw himself across the passenger seat, protecting his face as the fire passed over them. Yasoda and Sushma screamed.
“Are you okay?” Raley shouted, though he knew the answer. He was embarrassed. He’d told this trapped family that he would get them out safely. Now they were covered in glass and bleeding. Behind them, the trunk of Kumar’s Tesla was a flame.
4. What can we learn about Raley?
A. He hadn’t seen fire whirls in his career as a veteran of wildland fires.
B. He was quite experienced when it came to dealing with wildland fires.
C. He was so angry that he shouted at Don to move away from the road.
D. He saved the Kumar’s family out of the fire in his truck on seeing them.
5. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The smoke was so heavy that Raley could hardly see the road.
B. The doctor’s house was burnt down to the ground when Raley arrived.
C. There were three persons driving bulldozers quickly on the two-lane road.
D. Dr. Kumar with his wife was trapped in the car when the power cut off.
6. Why was Raley embarrassed in the last paragraph?
A. Because he was injured by the fire. B. Because his truck was blown off the road.
C. Because he might fail to save the family out. D. Because he found Kumar’s Tesla was on fire.
7. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. A Big Wildland Blaze B. A Lucky Family C. Come in My Truck D. I’ll Lead You Out

The people at Pantone know that times are hard.
“Many of us,” the color company said in a recent presentation, “feel anxious, completely overloaded and constantly stressed.” The cure, according to Pantone’s swatch psychologists? Blue. Specifically: Classic Blue.
For the 21st continuous year, Pantone has named a color of the year, a trend-forecasting stunt(噱头)as it is closely watched by the news media as by the industries — marketing, fashion, design — that actually traffic in visual trends.
Classic Blue is the color of blueberries, a Pepsi can and the sky when it’s “that beautiful color at the end of the day,” said Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, which researches and advises companies on human responses to color. In choosing Classic Blue, the organization said it first examined what was going on in the world.
“We’re living in this time now where things seem to be, around the world, a little bit, I don’t want to use the word unstable, but let’s just say a little shaky,” said Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “Nothing is absolutely certain from one moment to the next.”
Pantone wouldn’t get too specific about why people feel “shaky.” Political unrest seemed an obvious source of the shakiness, but, Ms. Pressman said, “We weren’t looking at this as a political message.” The decision wasn’t about impeachment or the election or Brexit. It also wasn’t a sly endorsement of the blue Democratic Party. Rather, Pantone has pinned the world’s anxiety and stress on a more common enemy: technology.
“It has sped things up to the point where we can’t necessarily handle all that’s coming in,” Ms. Eiseman said. Classic Blue “provides a shelter,” according to Pantone, fulfilling a “desire for a dependable, stable foundation.” Classic Blue is “nonaggressive,” “easily relatable” and “honest.” “The color of the year is really a marketing effort on the part of Pantone to get media attention,” she said. “What Pantone has brilliantly done is figure out how to exploit celebrity culture. Essentially, the color of the year is settling on a color as a celebrity.”
Pantone wants to stir up excitement about its own brand, and deadline-pressured journalists happily follow. Ms. Blaszczyk said, “You need something that you can write about and that’s somewhat exciting. And a celebrity is very exciting.”
8. What can replace the underlined word “pinned” in Paragraph 6?
A. Explained. B. Held. C. Blamed. D. Attached.
9. What’s the purpose of Pantone’s declaring a color annually?
A. To ease people’s pressure. B. To draw wide media attention.
C. To choose a color as a celebrity. D. To test human responses to color.
10. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Pantone has named a color of the year for only 20 years on end.
B. Industries keep a closer watch on Pantone than the news media.
C. Ms. Eiseman thinks people are living in an age that they can’t handle at all.
D. Naming a color yearly created a win-win situation for Pantone and the media.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Technology Shakes the World B. Classic Blue Never Fades
C. Pantone Leads Visual Trends D. Pantone Declares a Year of Blue
D
Scientists are reporting that ice cover in the Bering Sea decreased during the winters of 2018 and 2019 to levels not seen in thousands of years. The new report adds to concerns about the effect of climate change in the Arctic.
The scientists said satellite images and records provide a clear picture of how the sea ice has changed over the past 40 years. Before that, the only ice records available were from those found in ship records and other observations. So, scientists turned to peat land on Saint Matthew Island, off the coast of Alaska. Peat is plant tissue that breaks down in wet conditions. It can hold organic substances from plants that lived thousands of years ago.
The researchers studied different forms of oxygen molecules trapped in the peat land. With this information, they were able to estimate atmospheric and ocean conditions that would have affected rainfall and sea ice over a period of 5,500 years.
The researchers reported their findings in Science Advances, a publication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. “St. Matthew Island in itself has acted as its own weather station,” said Matthew Wooller, one of the researchers. He likened the levels of soil in the peat to a “book going back in time.”
Many studies have shown that the Arctic has warmed in recent years. Sea ice levels in the area around the North Pole have decreased. This year, the summertime Arctic sea ice reached its lowest level for the month of July in 40 years of record keeping.
The loss of sea ice is already hurting Arctic wildlife, such as walruses, polar bears, and seals. The loss of sea ice also affects indigenous communities that depend on hunting for food and clothing. Shrinking sea ice intensifies warming in the Arctic. That is because areas of dark water take the place of the sea ice. The dark water absorbs solar radiation instead of reflecting it back into the atmosphere.
The study suggests that changes in the flow of ocean waters and atmospheric conditions linked to climate change have had a big effect. So says Miriam Jones, the lead writer of the study. She is a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. “There’s a lot more going on than simply warming temperatures,” Jones said. “We’re seeing a shift in circulation patterns both in the ocean and the atmosphere,” she added.
12. According to the passage, why did scientists turn to “peat land” for their study?
A. Because peat is plant tissue that breaks down in wet conditions.
B. Because the peat land can affect the rainfall and the sea ice cover.
C. Because it can help research on atmospheric and ocean conditions.
D. Because the living plants on the peat land hold organic substances.
13. What does the underlined word “likened” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Related. B. Compared. C. Attracted. D. Referred.
14. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Warming in the Arctic region is strengthened by the loss of sea ice.
B. The local communities can certainly benefit from the decreasing ice.
C. The summertime Arctic sea ice reached its lowest level of the year.
D. Warming temperatures make the circulation patterns remain the same.
15. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. The loss of sea ice has a huge effect on the environment.
B. The decrease of the Arctic sea ice adds to concerns.
C. The causes of warming temperature are still uncertain.
D. Scientists are struggling with their studies of the Arctic.

For most of my adult life, I’ve never gone on an overseas holiday alone. I’ve traveled with my parents, partners, kids and other families. I’ve traveled with my bestie (闺蜜) and joined tours where I knew no one but came out with lifelong friends. 16
Solo travel is generally celebrated. I’ve seen a thousand pieces written by adventurous women who claim to have found themselves by crossing countries alone. 17 Every woman should travel alone at least once in her life!
18 For one thing, I need a lot of people contact. A single day without meaningful conversation can leave me feeling depressed. Proper and engaging conversation is difficult when traveling alone. Even if you’re good at chatting with strangers, it isn’t always possible.
I don’t want to worry about being alone on my travels. 19 I used to see this desire as some sort of imperfection, but now I see it as a reasonable choice.
Traveling solo also builds resilience (适应力), but so does life. I am a single parent raising three children while trying to manage a career. I make endless decisions alone and deal with crises alone. I manage loneliness and fear. I don’t need to travel alone to build resilience. I have resilience in large amounts.
20 It teaches you how diverse the world is and how to appreciate your culture in relation to another. It broadens your horizons and gives you a new viewpoint.
But you don’t need a solo journey to become an independent woman. I assure you that life will get you there in the end.
A. I’m sure traveling overseas would push me further out of my comfort zone.
B. And yet, I’ve never had the desire to do it.
C. I want support and company of others during my adventures.
D. Travel is incredibly valuable, no matter what your stage of life.
E. Traveling solo makes you capable, they say.
F. I don’t need my life to be effortful.
G. But, for a while, my failure to travel alone felt like a mistake.

“compare A to B”意为“把A比作B”。

19. C. 根据前文的“ I don’t want to...”以及后文的“I used to see this desire...”和“but now I see it as a valid choice”得知此处的desire指C选项里的“I want support and company during my adventures”,并且现在作者认为这种愿望是合理的,作者的观点发生了变化。

30. C根据上文“We paid our taxes and 29 a lot of forms. Then, after a while, we were sent no notices, so we paid no more 30 .”
33. A 根据上文“people greeting each other gently and kindly”可知这里的居民之间相处融洽。
be bored with表示对……腻烦;be attached to表示依恋,爱上;be tolerant of表示容忍;be opposite to表示在对面。
39. A 根据下文“dropped the pieces in the watering can”,可知Mike把这张卡片撕碎。 上方撕开,tear sth. into sth.
41. for 42. a 43. and 44. that 45. recognition
46. cooperating 47. which 48. have received 49. typically 50. was appointed
41. for. be known for表示因…
43. and.
44. that.
45. recognition.
46. cooperating.
47. which.
48. have received. 后文 “in the past 20 years” 为完成时的时间标志。
49. typically.
50. was appointed.
