Since I was born and brought up in a rural town, I have a great interest in nature. Using the chance of studying abroad in my second year at college, I decided to go to Canada just because I wanted to see the beautiful phenomena there So after I finished the study program, I went to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories.
I clearly remember the sixth night in Yellowknife. Suddenly my host mother came to my room around 8 p.m. and told me to change clothes and go outside quickly carrying her camera.
The northern lights were flickering (闪烁) in the sky! I was shocked and just stood there with my mouth open. I forgot to take pictures of the mysterious lights.
Since that night, whenever it was sunny, I went outside at night and looked at the sky. It was so cold that I lost all feeling in my hands and feet.
As I took pictures of the northern lights, I came to find a characteristic movement of the lights. They first appear in the north part of the sky and then they gradually come down to the south part of the sky. After that, suddenly, they come in the middle of the north and south only for a while, which is the time when the best northern lights can be seen. Since it is only a few seconds for the northern lights to come down to the middle of the sky, it is very hard to get good pictures.
The stronger the sun acts, the better and stronger the northern lights flicker in the sky. That’s because they come about from the collisions (碰撞) between atmospheric gases and the solar wind. Much more solar wind comes to the earth when the sun is active, which leads to the best northern lights. And the colors of the northern lights depend on the height of the collisions and the kinds of gases.
    24. Why did the host mother ask the author to go out?
    A. She wanted to take a picture of him.
    B. She wanted to take a walk with him.
    C. She wanted to tell him something important.
    D. She wanted him to see the northern lights.
    25. The author forgot to take pictures after going out because ______.
    A. the host mother didn’t remind him to take the camera
    B. he was shocked by the wonderful sight
    C. the lights flickering in the sky disappeared too soon
    D. he lost all feeling in his hands and feet
    26. When is the best time to see the northern lights?
    A. When they appear in the north part of the sky.
    B. When they come down to the south part of the sky.
    C. When they are between the north and south.
    D. When they rise in the east part of the sky.
    27. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
    A. Ways to take good pictures.
    B. The relationship between the sun and the northern lights.
    C. The colors of the northern lights.
    D. The time of the best northern lights.
    C
As missing children age, their appearances are quite different from their last known photographs, which makes finding them tough. Now AI could make it quicker to match any found children to those old photos.
Police can use software to age photos of people who have been missing for a while, but these tend to work best in adults, as age-related changes to adult faces are more predictable and so easier to simulate.
With children, these aged images don't tend to be like the older child, and matching photos of found children to old images in a database of missing children is difficult.
Now Debayan Deb, a professor at Michigan State University, and his colleagues have created an program to do this for them. They trained a face-recognition program on data sets including the Children Longitudinal Face data set, which contains images of nearly 1000 children aged between 2 and 18 years old. Each was photographed at least four times over a period of six years.
The AI learned to match recent photographs of children with images taken 2.5 years earlier 80 per cent of the time.
With one year between the two photographs, the method was 90 per cent accurate at identifying faces. This dropped to 73 per cent after three years. The approach beats comparing children with photos taken when they were aged 0 to 4 that have been aged by software, which hovers at 50 percent recognition after six months. The new AI might help to improve accuracy of this kind of software as well.
"This is a very good paper that could potentially be used to identify missing children," says Amarjot Singh at the University of Cambridge.
Deb's next goal is to extend the age gap. His team also hopes to develop an app that could be used to fight child trafficking.
    28. The software which police has used can_________.
A.match photos of found kids to former images.
B.predict the changes of people over time
    C. produce accurate images of children D. age the photos of missing people
    29. Why it is difficult to match photos of found children to their old images?
    A. Because the data set of child face images is quite large.
    B. Because the software can’t age the photos of those kids.
    C. Because aged images aren’t very alike to the older child.
    D. Because it’s difficult to recognize the older kids with photos.
    30. It can be learned that Deb’s team________.
    A. helps police identify missing children B. intends to develop a new app
    C. improved the software used by police D. will give their app to police
    31. What do we know about the approach created by Deb and his colleague?
    A. It is based on the Children Longitudinal Face data set.
    B. It can recognize children’s images between 2 and 18.
    C. It is more accurate than the software to match photos.
    D. It has been used to identify missing children.
    D

Used to do sth.
