If you think about World Heritage Sites, you probably think of places connected with ancient art and culture, historical buildings and monuments. And of course, many of these are on the World Heritage List (WHL)(世界遗产名录). But the WHL contains a lot of sites that are not so obvious. Let's look at a few of them.
    Robben Island in South Africa
This island was used through the centuries as a prison , a hospital and a military base. But it's probably most famous as a maximum-security prison for political prisoners in the twentieth century. Nelson Mandela was one of its most famous residents. The WHL says it represents "the triumph of democracy(民主)and freedom over oppression and racism".
    Borders of France and Spain
This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological formations. But it is also an area of small farms. People there still use a type of agriculture(农业)that used to be common in mountainous areas of Europe but that has almost completely disappeared in modern times.
    The city of Brasilia, Brazil
Brasilia is a capital city that was created from nothing in 1956. The WHL calls it "a landmark in the history of town planning". The different areas of the city and the buildings themselves were all designed at the same time carefully. Every part of the city shows the ideas of the planner and the architect.
    Simien National Park, Ethiopia
Simien National Park was one of the first sites to be listed in 1978. It is one of the highest mountainous areas in Africa, and the WHL calls it "one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world". It is also important for its wildlife. The population of some rare animals is getting smaller and smaller.
21.Which of the following sites was listed on the WHL for its political symbol ?
    A. Simien National Park, Ethiopia. B. The city of Brasilia, Brazil.
C . Borders of France and Spain . D. Robben Island in South Africa.

First aid means the aid or the help that can be given to an injured person first, that is, before any other help arrives. Nowadays there is usually a telephone not far away and the first we should do, if a serious accident happens, is to call for an ambulance. Sometimes quick action by us may save someone’s life.
Shock. People often suffer from shock after receiving an injury, sometimes even when the injury is a small one. The face turns grey, and the skin becomes damp and cold. They breathe quickly. They should be kept warm. Cover them with a blanket and give them a warm drink.
Broken bones. Do not move the patient. Send for an ambulance at once.
Bleeding. A little bleeding doesn't harm. It washes dirt from the wound. But if the bleeding continues, try to stop it by placing a clean cloth firmly over the wound until the bleeding stops or help arrives.
Poison. A person who has taken poison should be taken to a hospital at once. With some poisons, sleeping pills, for example, it is a good thing to make the patient throw up by pressing your fingers down his throat.
Remember: When an accident happens, send someone to telephone for an ambulance at once. Keep the injured person warm and quiet. Give him plenty of air. Do not let other people crowd around him.
    24. How many common accidents are mentioned in this passage?
    A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.

    B. When a person has taken poison, we must make him throw up at once.
    C. If an injured person goes into shock, we must try to keep them warm.
    D. First aid means to give an injured person necessary help at once before the doctor comes
    27. The passage mainly tells us _______________
    A. something we must remember.
    B. some examples of common accidents.
    C. some facts about some common accidents.
    D. some advice on how to deal with common accidents.

Kids and science seem to be made for each other!
The basic science is a combination of thought and experiment called the scientific method. It’s where you start with an idea, create a way to prove or disprove your idea, and show what you learned based on facts. Learning to follow this process helps you think logically (逻辑地) and carefully. These important thinking skills can be used in many areas of study. To give a child practice with these thinking skills is like giving vitamins (维生素) to a developing mind.
One of the greatest things we can teach our children is to love learning. Learning science is a great way to do so. Children are easy to be interested in science. Because much of science is hands-on, it attracts most children. Nothing makes a child sit up and take notice like the “WOW!” of a great science showing.
Science opens doors to many subjects at school. Building love for science can be helpful in other areas of study. For example, one cannot love science for very long without becoming good at its language-math! So science encourages children to study math. An interest in science is an interest in how things were once understood compared to how they are understood now. Thus studying science lends itself easily to studying history. And after you do an experiment, you need to write a lab report. Therefore, writing becomes an important part of science.
Science is the basic thing for much of our life. The science of farming shows how our food is produced; biomedical science keeps us healthy; even our beds these days are designed according to scientific facts. We almost eat, sleep and breathe with the help of science! When we prepare the next generation (一代) of voters, creators and policy makers, it is important to make sure they are not only comfortable but also good at science.
    28. What is the text mainly about?
    A. How kids can make use of science. B. Why science is important.
    C. Why kids should learn science. D. What kids should learn at school.
    29. According to Paragraph 2, what does learning the scientific method mean to kids?
    A. Learning to do experiments.
B Learning many areas of study.
    C. Helping them develop thinking skills.
    D. Refusing any ideas that are not logical.
    30. If a child works hard at science at school, he/she _______________.
    A. usually has no time for other subjects.
    B. is likely to learn many other subjects well.
    C. is usually bad at such subjects like history.
    D. usually loses interest in other activities.
    31. Which of the following statements would the author agree with?
    A. Science is too difficult for children.
    B. Children usually consider science boring.
    C. Science could make children love learning.
    D. Children who can't think carefully shouldn’t learn science.
    D
Parties and social gatherings no longer excite us the same way they once did. This is not due to a lack of desire to socialize, but the smartphone.
At parties, people focus more on their smartphones than on their drinks. According to a recent study from International Data Corporation, over half of all Americans have a smartphone and reach it the moment they wake up, keeping it in hand all day. In addition, too many people are using smartphones while driving and as a result, they get into car crashes. 34 percent of teens admit to text while driving, and they confirm that texting messages are the major interruption while driving. People’s attachment (依恋) to their smartphones is unbelievably becoming more important than the lives of themselves and others.
Just as drivers dismiss the importance of focusing while on the road, many people also fail to recognize the significance of human interaction. When with their friends, some people pointlessly (无谓地) check or send messages in the presence of their friends., which means that their friends are less important. In addition, relying on our smartphones to make friends does not give us the same advantages as making new friends in the real world. Face-to-face conversations will give us the chance to improve our communication skills in the long run.
As many people risk their lives and the lives of people around them just to send a text or mindlessly check their messages, smartphones are in many ways more dangerous to people. The technology shows the achievement weaken the value of communication. Not only is the smartphone affecting our desire to interact face to face, but it is also lowering people’s ability to communicate.
    32. The purpose of this text is to _______________.
    A. express a concern about the overuse of the smartphone.
    B. appeal to us to pay attention to communication skills.
    C. call for an end to the use of the smartphone while driving.
    D. advise us to be cautious about the addiction to the smartphone.
    33. The second paragraph is developed by _______________.
    A. analyzing the effects. B. listing figures.
    C. giving examples. D. comparing facts.
    34. The author advocates making new friends _______________.
    A. under a free circumstance. B. in different ways.
    C. in a face-to-face way. D. by using smartphones.
    35. Too much dependence on the smartphone leads to the fact that _______________.
    A. people are more and more narrow-minded.
    B. parties and gatherings limit people’s social circle.
    C. face-to-face communication becomes less important.
D people’s communication skills are weakened.

W:Well, it certainly is. And most people rent a motorbike because you can get around faster and even go to the beach if you like.
M:If I wanted to hire two motorbikes tomorrow morning for two days, would there be any problem?
W:None at all. May I have your name, please?
    M:It’s Green. Arthur Green.
    W:And your telephone number?
M:I’m at the Holiday Sun Hotel. My number is 0708112. I’m in room 1203. By the way, is your bike rental shop at No. 100 Teckman Street?
    W:That’s right.
    M:Thank you. Bye.
    Text 9
M:Professor Hopkins. May I have a word with you?
    W:Sure, Meg. What’s up?
W:I got a C for my report. I am wondering what I have done wrong. You know I have put a lot of time and energy to the report.
M:Well, Meg. I understand you have made much effort on the report. Maybe that’s why you are two days late to hand in the report. The due day is September 3rd.
W:Yes, Professor. I am sorry about that.
M:And this report is about the success of the Starbucks Coffee. In your report, you have mentioned the company’s management, selections of stores and service. But I am surprised that you didn’t mention anything about its coffee. It’s a coffee shop. Meg. Isn’t the taste of its coffee the most important thing to its success?
W:Yeah, I guess I have made a mistake by leaving it out.
M:And figures are important too. You also need to add an actual figure such as the monthly sales.
    W:You are quite right, Professor?
M:And why not do more research, look for some figures and write the report again.
W:Are you giving me another change, Professor?
    M:Seems like I am.
    Text 10
If you are like millions of busy people, you want to get your work done, so you can do the things that you enjoy the most. That’s what Task Rabbit, a new service company, helps people do. Task Rabbit uses the Internet and smartphones to quickly find people in your neighborhood to do the tasks for you. For example, if you are throwing a surprise party and you need someone to pick up the ice cream cake and your aunt Sally, but you don’t have time to drive around, a tasker will do it for you!Task Rabbit employees are hired and screened by the company. They have specific services in which they specialize. Need help hanging a painting?Need someone with a pickup truck to help you move? There is a tasker out there to help you. The taskers are generally well-educated people. Out of all the taskers, about 70% hold bachelor’s degrees, 20% hold master’s degrees, and 5% hold PhD degrees. Some people have turned their work for Task Rabbit into a full-time job as well. Leah Busque, who ran out of dog food one day, founded Task Rabbit in 2008. She based it on the idea of “neighbours helping neighbours”. Since then, the company has received $37. 5 million in funding.
