It’s said that you don’t know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes. And you also don’t know what it’s like for older people to travel until you accompany one on a trip.
After flying with my elderly father from Washington, D.C. to LA in July, I began to realize that a companion has important tasks that can make a journey easier for older people. I booked nonstop tickets on JetBlue to avoid tiring, confusing connections, and we flew directly into small, manageable Long Beach Airport. Even though my father could walk, I arranged with the airline for wheelchair assistance, which meant we got on board first.
When I took him back to the airport for his return flight to Washington, I got permission from JetBlue to wait with him at the gate instead of saying goodbye at the security checkpoint. I wished he’d had a first-class seat and access to a comfortable airline club. Better yet, I wish I had flown with him both ways. As I watched the attendant wheel him to the lift that took him from the tarmac(飞机跑道) to the plane, I felt like an anxious mom sending her child to school for the first time.
Things can go away on a plane trip. And then there is the horrifying story about Joe and Margie. When they landed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, a wheelchair attendant met them to help with a connection. But somehow Margie, who had Alzheimer’s disease, disappeared.
I didn’t need to worry about my father wandering away. At 82,his mind was sharper than mine. But his hearing was poor, so I worried about what would happen if he missed an important announcement. Fortunately, everything went just fine. Careful planning made the trip successful.
Next time I travel with a senior, I’ll know better. I hope there will be a next time.

C.Live up to one’s expectation. D.Carry on as usual.
7.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Keeping seniors company will make them enjoy their trip better.
B.It is a pleasant experience to travel with seniors.
C.To have a long journey with seniors is unpractical.
D.Taking a trip does great good to seniors.

If you could design your own school and study whatever you wanted, what would you choose to learn?
This isn’t an unlikely question for students at Monument Mountain Regional High School, who are taking part in an activity called the Independent Project. The program is a special school within the Massachusetts public high school that’s completely run by students - no teachers, parents, or adults are allowed - and they’re in charge of deciding their whole curriculum.
These teens’ homework and what they study in the classroom are all totally up to them. Charles Tsai, a journalist, made a 15-minute film about the project that shows the wide variety of activities different students join.
Students aren’t taking this lightly - instead of reacting irresponsibly to the freedom to design their own studies, they’re dealing with their own interests by writing poetry collections, learning instruments and taking flight lessons.
The program is this: On Mondays students come up with questions in relation to one of their school subjects, then they spend the rest of the week researching and coming up with possible conclusions to these questions. On Fridays, they present this information to their classmates.
“I think the more choices we have in our school, the more students we will help develop into the kind of citizens that we need,” Principal Marianne Young explains in the film.
In the video, teens express their satisfaction with the program because it holds different kinds of learners, even those who don’t always succeed in a traditional study situation.
“I have difficulty in reading and writing. School has always been a big problem for me,” one student named Sergio explains in the video. “If it were not for this program, I don’t know if I’d be graduating - I don’t know where I’d be right now. I think this has really been my savior and got me through the last two years of high school.”
    8. What is the Independent Project about?
    A. Various activities for students.  B. A self-designed school.
    C. Student-centered curricula. D. Teacher-free classes.
    9. How does the program work?
    A. Teachers work out a curriculum for students. B. Students serve as teachers in turn.
    C. Students research topics they put forward. D. Teachers work together with students.
    10. What do we know about Sergio?
    A. He finds it hard to graduate.
    B. He feels grateful to the Independent Project.
    C. He has bitter memories of high school.
    D. He performs badly in the Independent Project.
    11. Which of the following statements is true?(原创)
    A. The Independent Project is available throughout Massachusetts.
    B. Students react passively to the design of their studies.
    C. The courses in the school are designed diversely.
    D. The program benefits those who fall behind both in study and behavior.

Just as our bodies produce waste every day – which is why we need to shower and use the toilet – our brains produce harmful waste proteins. But how can our brains “shower” themselves?
A 2017 study found the answer. Researchers at the US University of Rochester studied the brains of mice and discovered that they cleaned themselves while the mice slept. A kind of fluid in the brain, called cerebral spinal fluid (CSF,脑脊液), was found to increase dramatically during sleep, washing away waste proteins that had been building up between brain cells in waking hours. “This study shows that the brain has different functional states when asleep and when awake,” Maiken Nedergaard, the lead researcher, told NBC News. It also explains why we can’t seem to think clearly after a sleepless night while a good night’s sleep leaves us feeling sharp and refreshed.
Now a new study, published on Oct 31 in Science, digs a little deeper into our brains’ self-cleaning procedure. Instead of mice, this time humans were the test subjects. Researchers at Boston University, US, monitored the brain waves of 13 healthy adults who were sleeping, using accelerated MRI, which is capable of recording faster changes inside the brain than a regular FMRI machine. They found that every 20 seconds, blood flowed out of the brain, making room for a large amount of CSF to come in and “clean”. This cycle coincided with the rhythm of the brain’s slow waves – an electrical activity that happens when we’re in deep sleep. It’s still unknown how these brain activities are connected. But the fact that they are connected is exciting enough, since it allows researchers to piece together possible new explanations for misunderstood diseases. For example, slow-wave sleep has been proven to play a role in strengthening our memories. This may explain why people with Alzheimer’s often have fewer and weaker slow brainwaves.
Based on this new study, there could be one more explanation for diseased brains: They are not clean. Nedergaard, leader of the 2018 study, is also excited about the new findings. “Maybe the most important take-home message is that sleep is a serious thing,” she told Scientific American. “You really need to sleep to keep a healthy brain because it links electrical activity to a practical ‘housekeeping’ function.”
    12. What can we learn about CSF?
    A. It is a fluid which increases during the day.
    B. It builds up between brain cells in waking hours.
    C. It comes in the brain and washes away waste proteins.
    D. It exists more in human brains than in mice brains.
    13. Why did the researchers at Boston University use humans as the subjects?
    A. To know more about human brains’ self-cleaning procedure.
    B. To see how human brains function when they sleep.
    C. To reduce the difficulty of the experiment.
    D. To get more information about CSF.
    14. What can the new findings contribute to?
    A. strengthening our memories. B. explaining some misunderstood diseases.
    C. helping cure Alzheimer. D. keeping our house clean.
    15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
    A. Curing diseased brains B. Feeling sharp and refreshed
    C. Taking your sleep seriously D. Cleaning in your dreams

    My Magic Shoes
As is known to all, shoes play an important role in our life, for it can protect our feet from being hurt. As a boy who likes doing sports, I am looking forward to inventing a pair of shoes helping my feet keep dry and me walk conveniently.
To keep feet dry and comfortable, this new kind of shoes is equipped with a micro-fan. When you walk, a small machine changes the energy produced by walking into electric energy and stores it. If you stop walking, the micro-fan can work immediately to dry your feet. However, what amazes you most is the following new function. There is a special red button in each of the shoes. If the road you are walking on is flat, you can press the red button, which helps your shoes change into a roller skate with two rollers appearing beneath your shoes, and you can reach your destination quickly. On arriving at your destination, press the red button again and the rollers will return to your shoes.
So that's my magic shoes. Would you like to have a try?
