With the belief that “Schools should not frighten children”, David Schenck founded the Schenck School for some special children in Atlanta, Georgia, to help children overcome their trouble and recover their lost self-esteem.
Growing up in Chappaqua, New York, David started out in public school, and had trouble right from the very beginning. He didn’t feel like he was part of the class and didn’t feel like he could do any of the things they did. An uncle paid the tuition for him to go to The Salisbury School in Connecticut. “They had never seen someone so poorly prepared for their school,” he says. “I had to go back a couple of years because I didn’t know anything about reading and writing. I was trying to go to the 7th grade, but having lots of trouble there. I graduated when I was 20, directly to the Army, and from the Army I took advantage of the G.I. Bill (军人安置法案) and got a degree from University of Michigan.”
When David left for a teaching position in New England, he did not know that this move would change his life and the lives of thousands of young people with dyslexia—nor did he know, at that time, that he had such trouble. He worked with The Rectory School in Connecticut, which wanted him to work during the regular school year and at a camp during the summer. The camp was for dyslexics and it was there that David received his formal introduction to dyslexia and training in the Orton-Gillingham approach.
After a few years at the camp, David returned to Atlanta. He earned his master’s degree in education at Emory University and landed a teaching job at Georgia Military Academy. He was charged with teaching students how to read and write. From that environment, the idea for The Schenck School was born. With his help, these children got the appropriate intervention they desperately needed.
24.How about David Schenck when he was a child?
A. He couldn’t get along well with his classmates. B. He failed to perform as well as other students.
C. He found it hard to adapt to a new environment. D. He disliked being part of the class he attended.
25.What happened when David was in Salisbury School?
A. It is a pity that he didn’t get his diploma in hand. B. He decided to drop out of school and join the army.
C. It was a challenge for him to complete his studies. D. He entered University of Michigan from there.
26.What does the underlined word “dyslexia” mean in the passage?
A. Difficulty in reading and spelling. B. Trouble in dealing with others.
C. Interest in choosing a position.
D. Ability in teaching students.
27.What does the author want to tell in the passage?
A. Schools should not frighten children.
B. David managed to become successful.
C. David is considered the greatest educator.
D. The Schenck School and its founder.

Throughout history, music spread among people of different cultures. In today's technological advanced society, however, people spread music online, sometimes without an artist's permission. This can lead to many problems, and music companies are now cracking down on this practice. Sharing music online without permission is theft.
Sharing music online prevents recording companies from making money from their efforts. They say that sharing music online has resulted in a huge drop in profits and sales over the past 10 years. People who find music for free online are not paying for CDs or every MP3 downloaded. To truly understand the influence of music piracy on creators, one must understand how many people are involved in the recording process. For the sale of each album, profits must be shared between musicians, sound engineers, music producers, managers, advertisers, and the company selling the product. Many people believe sharing music only affects the recording artist, but the reality is that sharing hurts business for all companies involved.
There are many people who don't see the harm in sharing music online and even think they have the right to do it. One online blogger states that he originally paid for an entire CD and that he should be able to do with the material whatever he wants. While he may have legally paid for the music, he does not have the right to provide permission, which means people like the blogger are thieves.
Although we don't spread today's music the same way we did before, there's no doubt that people around the world love to share music. However, internet piracy would prevent musicians from continuing producing albums for fear of theft. Therefore, if people want to continue listening to their favorite artists, they need to buy their music so that artists will make enough profit to continue their music careers.
28. The underlined phrase "cracking down on" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. bringing up carefully B. speaking highly
C. Figuring out seriously D. destroying completely
29. We can learn from the text that ________.
A. sharing music files online affects a lot of people
B. artists are taking action to protect their right
C. online music sharing increases sales of music CD
D. a person who bought a CD has the right to share it online with others
30. How is the text organized?
A. Topic—Argument—Explanation
B. Introduction—Supporting statements—Conclusion
C. Main idea—Comparison—Supporting statements
D. Opinion—Discussion—Description
31. What is the author’s attitude toward music piracy?
A. indifferent B. favorable C. disapproval D. skeptical

Within 10 years, nearly half of American adults will be obese or very overweight, a new report predicts. In addition, the researchers warned that one in four Americans will be severely obese.
The new report used a federal study that lasted more than 20 years and included data from 6.3 million adults. The researchers made predictions for the future based on current trends. Their study corrects for a weakness in earlier studies. Before, research usually depended on national health surveys in which people often reported their weight as less than it really was.
The New England Journal of Medicine published the study in December. It was the result of work by researchers at Harvard and George Washington universities. The chief writer of the study, Zachary Ward, is with Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. He spoke about the findings with Reuters news service.
"Obesity is getting worse in every state," he said. "And especially concerning is severe obesity, which used to be pretty rare and which now will be the most common group for a lot of states across the country.”
Most affected will be women, blacks and low-income adults. The study said nearly one third of people in those groups will be severely obese. Obesity can result in many health problems. The risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer all go up when someone is severely overweight.
The study did not look at the reasons behind the increases, but "income is a big driver. Age is a big driver," Ward said. States with younger people have lower obesity rates because people usually "gain weight as they age."
The state with the lowest obesity rate will be Colorado, which has always had lower rates. It is mainly because people in Colorado take a lot of outdoor activities. On the other hand, maybe they have higher income. He added that living at higher elevations, like Colorado might also influence the results. “There may be something about having to take a little extra energy to do everything at a higher altitude" that keeps weights lower,” he said.
32.What is the weakness in earlier studies?
A.The researchers didn’t attain the data about adults.
B. It is not easy for researchers to make predictions.
C.The researchers failed to obtain the actual data.
D. People tend to tease whoever carries out the surveys.
33. What can we conclude according to Zachary Ward?
A. There used to be almost no obese people in America.
B. Obesity is an unavoidable phenomenon in America.
C. People can easily become obese with them aging.
D. It is high time that Americans noticed their weight.
34.What makes Colorado have the lowest obesity rate?
A. People are living a happy-go-lucky life. B. People tend to take lots of outdoor activities.
C. People earn the highest income in the USA. D. People have adapted to living at a higher altitude.
35. Which is the proper title for the passage?
A. Half of Americans Will Be Obese by 2030 B. Living Conditions Closely Related to Weight
C. American Women Becoming More Obese D. Outdoor Activities Help Reduce Extra Weight
