They give us paper and fuel, as well as vital ecological set-vices—like cleaning the air, storing carbon and providing home. We’re talking about trees, of course.
But human changes to the environment appear to be causing great changes to trees around the world. In a new study, scientists reviewed global research on trends in tree seedlings (幼苗),growth, and death. They combined those data with an analysis deforestation And they found worldwide, older trees are dying at a higher rate than in the past, due to reasons like rising air temperature, wildfires, drought(干旱) and pathogens (病菌).
“And most of the drivers of that decrease in large, old trees are increasing themselves, such as temperature going up, droughts are more severe, wildfires, windstorms, and deforestation are all—although variable across the globe—they’re generally increasing. And so both the loss has already occurred, but we expect more continued loss of big, old trees,” said Nate McDowell, an earth scientist at Pacific Northwest National Lab, who was one of the study’s authors.
“So if we have an increasing rate of death, particularly of the larger, older trees, what’s left are the younger trees. So that’s why on average, through the loss of bigger, older trees, our forests are becoming younger and shorter. This trend is a problem, because old trees are vitally important.”
“The increase in death does limit the carbon storage of an ecosystem, and can force the system to become a carbon source to the atmosphere. The second reason is from a biodiversity viewpoint—old trees tend to house a higher biodiversity. And the third reason is linked with beauty: as a society we care about these trees. We have national parks named after these big trees.” Nate McDowell added.
    24. What’s the purpose of the author in writing the passage?
    A. To warn us to care about old trees.
B.To tell us why old trees are dying out.
    C. To call on us to plant more trees.
    D. To prove forests are becoming smaller.
    25. Which of the following does Nate McDowell think is a problem?
    A. There’ll be a larger number of older trees.
    B. Older trees will disappear in the world.
    C. Young trees will be cut down by people.
    D. Trees will become younger and shorter.
    26. Why are old trees important?
    A. They are beautiful.
    B. They limit the carbon storage of an ecosystem.
    C. National parks have access to them.
    D. They can shelter a variety of wildlife.
    27. What may be the best title for the text?
    A. Climate Destroys Forests.
    B. Forests Gets Younger and Shorter
    C. The Reasons of the Loss of Old Trees
    D. The Dover of the Decrease of Old Trees
    C(改编)
A crisis is on the way.Global warming? The world economy? No,the decline of reading.People are just not doing it anymore, especially the young.Who’s responsible? What is responsible? The Internet,of course, and everything that comes with it—Facebook,Twitter,etc..
There’s been a warning about the coming death of literate civilization for a long time.In the 20th century, first it was the movies, then radio, then television that seemed to end the written world.None did.Reading survived;in fact it not only survived,it has developed better. The world is more literate than ever before — there are more and more readers, and more and more books.
The fact that we often get our reading material online today is not something we should worry over. The electronic and digital revolution of the last two decades has arguably shown the way forward for reading and for writing. Interconnectivity allows for the possibility of a reading experience that was barely imaginable before.Where traditional books had to make do with photographs and illustrations,an e-book can provide readers with an unlimited number of links:to texts, pictures, and videos.
On the other hand, there is the danger of trivialization(碎片化).One Twitter group is offering its followers single-sentence-long“digests”of the great novels.War and Peace in a sentence? You must be joking. We should fear the fragmentation(碎片)of reading. There is the danger that the high-speed connectivity of the Internet will reduce our attention span—that we will be incapable of reading anything of length or which requires deep concentration.
In such a fast-changing world,in which reality seems to be remade each day,we need the ability to focus and understand what is happening to us.This has always been the function of literature and we should be careful not to let it disappear. Our society needs to be able to imagine the possibility of someone entirely in pace with modern technology but able to make sense of a dynamic, confusing world.
    28.In Paragraph 2, we can learn .
    A.the disappearance of traditional books
    B.the development of human civilization
    C.the historical challenges for reading
    D.the birth of pioneering e-books
29.According to the passage, the advantage of e-books is .
    A.1imited link B.imaginative design
    C.low cost D.varied contents
30.How does the author feel towards single-sentence-long novels?
    A.Doubtful B.Worried C.Shocked D.Hopeful
31.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Technology is an opportunity and a challenge for traditional reading.
B.Technology pushes the way forward for reading and writing.
C.Interconnectivity is a feature of new reading experience.
D.Technology offers a greater variety of reading practice.

It’s hard to be the bearer of bad news, but most of IKEA’s print and digital fascinating shots of picturesque rooms and products are fake. Those beautiful,“natural-looking” photos of gorgeous rooms and kitchens are mostly the work of computer magic, adjusted and corrected until they’re picture-perfect.
Martin Enthed,IT manager for IKEA’s in-house communications agency, revealed,“In 2012,12 per cent of its product and concept images was CGI-rendered,increasing to 25 per cent in 2013.Since then, that percentage of rendered images appearing in the company’s catalogue and online has tripled.75 per cent of the furniture company’s product images today are created by computers.”
It’s a move that first caught the attention of photographers and graphic designers a few years back when the furniture giant announced it would cancel photoshoots in favor of computer-generated imagery(CGI).
Enthed said IKEA began shifting equipment in 2009 when company officials called in his team and said they weren’t pleased with some previous photos and CG images.
“So we looked at all the images they said weren’t good and the two of three they said were great, and the ones they didn’t like were photography and the good ones were all CG,”Enthed said.“Now we only talk about a good or bad image - not what technique created it.”
It’s a not-so-secret strategy used by top companies specializing in home and furniture design, though many consumers remain oblivious.
The company claims the shift is another way to reduce its environmental footprint, saying constructing digital files produces less waste. It also helps the home furnishing empire’s pocketbooks.
32.What directly led IKEA to adopt CGI on a larger scale?
    A.The convenience of high technology.
    B.Company officials’ reaction to works.
C.The change in the concept of management.
    D.Development of environmental awareness.
33.According to the passage, the advantage of the shift is that IKEA can .
    A.expand into another field
    B.increase its financial benefits
    C.win more support of consumers
D.produce more furniture of high quality
34.The underlined word “oblivious” in paragraph 6 means “ ”.
    A.unaware B.calm
    C.conservative D.disturbed
35.It can be concluded from the passage that .
A.IKEA should be punished because of fake photos
B.IKEA set a good example as the furniture giant
C.IKEA adjusted strategies to answer its need
D.IKEA has a pioneering spirit in promotion

Arriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband , Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time
while looking for a house for me and our children as we would go there when he made everything settled.
During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He almost got lost in those unfamiliar blocks. When he came back in the late afternoon, he discovered that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely
worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport. For a while, he was overwhelmed withdepression with no one to turn to.
He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in a strange city, thinking of the terrible
troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new
    one.
Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband’s name and
was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶)that had been left out on the footpath.
My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young
daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers.Her parents had carefully sorted them out,although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written
letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend. My husband was so
excited about the return of the suitcase.Meanwhile, the kindness of this family made him feel that this place could be a new start, a new home for a brand new life.
    注意:
    1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
    2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
    Paragraph 1:
In order to thank this family,…

    Paragraph 2:
A few weeks later, my children and I arrived in Sydney.

    21-23 DBA 24-27 ADDB 28-31 CDBA 32-35 BBAC
根据第一段中“They give us paper and fuel, as well as vital ecological set-vices—like cleaning the air, storing carbon and providing home. We’re talking about trees, of course.”第三段中“And most of the drivers of that decrease in large, old trees are increasing themselves, such as temperature going up, droughts are more severe, wildfires, windstorms, and deforestation are all—although variable across the globe—they’re generally increasing. ” 以及第四段中“This trend is a problem, because old trees are vitally important.” 故选A项。
根据第四段中“So that’s why on average, through the loss of bigger, older trees, our forests are becoming younger and shorter. This trend is a problem, because old trees are vitally important.”
根据最后一段中“The second reason is from a biodiversity viewpoint—old trees tend to house a higher biodiversity.”
根据第五段中““So if we have an increasing rate of death, particularly of the larger, older trees, what’s left are the younger trees. So that’s why on average, through the loss of bigger, older trees, our forests are becoming younger and shorter. This trend is a problem, because old trees are vitally important.””
However, it proved difficult to catch more than the two fish which Derksen hooked"可知,除了Derksen钓到的两条鱼之外,他们很难再钓到更多的鱼,故接下来应该承接上文,描绘在这种情形下两人的反应,F项"不高兴的岳父和紧张的女婿几乎没说一句话"符合语境。
The book published in April has sold more than 20 ,000 copies in Germany"可知,这本书在德国销量不错,故接下来说明这本书受欢迎的原因。E项中的"I”指代上文提到的The book。
So he wrote down all the funny things that he had experienced in China"可知,空处应该阐述Derksen写书的原因,即他曾思考如何让德国人更多地了解中国,他的朋友建议他写一本书,因此他将他在中国经历的趣事都写了下来。故选A项。
41-45 CABCD 46-50 CCBDD 51-55 ACADD
    42.A 根据上文中的“I was always hungry, thirsty”可知,作者总感觉饥饿,口渴,永不“满足(satisfied)”。
43.B 根据文中的“feeling like I had to go to the bathroom, but ...”
    45.D 根据下文中的“in the hospital”及“blood sugar level”可知,作者去医院接受了“检查(checked over)”。
46.C 根据文中的“The doctors and nurses thought I might pass out, so they injected me”及“I had Type 1 juvenile diabetes”可知,作者的血糖水平很“高(high)”,医生和护士告诉了作者他所能想到的最坏的消息——化验显示作者罹患了1型糖尿病。
47.C 根据该空后的“the only question I could think to ask was, ‘Am I going to die?’”
48.B 根据上文中的“A nurse told me to go out, enjoy a meal with my family”及下文中作者接受治疗的描述可知,一位护士让作者去和家人吃顿饭“放松(relax)”一下,因为第二天作者新的、艰苦的生活就会开始。
49.D “I don’t remember what time I had to be at the hospital”(“我”不知道自己什么时候到的医院)与“I know it was early”(“我”知道很早)之间是转折关系,故选but(但是)。
50.D 根据上文中“Three nurses, one dietician, and a doctor all trained me, over the course of two days”可知,医护人员是在“照顾(take care of)”作者。
51.A 根据上文中的“Every needle hurt”及下文中的“I was able to think about the needles without crying”可知,作者开始觉得自己“越来越坚强(stronger)”。
    53.A 根据文中的“when I look back that I was able to be strong”可知,作者对于自己能坚强面对病痛和家人朋友能够支持自己,内心是非常“感激的(appreciated)”。
54.D 根据本段中的“To this day, I have had 3,38 needle injections, but each of them helps me to remember I must be strong”及“it has made me the person I am today”可知,作者“惊奇地(Incredibly)”发现自己竟然很感谢这场病,因为自己已由原先患病时的悲伤无助变得坚强,而且作者会继续做坚强的人,不会“改变(change)”。

    Dear Sir or Madam,
Sorry to bother you ! Every time I go to school or go back home, I feel awfully terrible, with so many vechicles traveling and stopping outside the school gate, which makes it challenging for other students and me to cross the road safely. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that effective measures should be taken to solve the problem, such as parking the vechicles in the right place, arranging for more traffic policemen to keep order and so on.
I’d appreciate it a lot if you could take my advice into full consideration. Looking forward to your early reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

In order to thank this family, Rashid invited them to a dinner in a nearby restaurant. Rashid
told them he was a newcomer in this city and wanted to find a house to settle down here waiting
for his family to join him. “When I found out that my suitcase was missing, I was disappointed
and hopeless. Thank you sincerely for your help. What a timely assistance for me! ” Rashid said.
This family could have chosen to ignore this suitcase. However, they didn’t. They found out the
owner out of their kindness and turned this trash into a treasure. “You are welcome, Rashid. I
heard that there are some houses for sale in my neighborhood. I can show you around, if you’re
interested.” Again, thanks to this kind family, Rashid found a sweet home.
A few weeks later, my children and I arrived in Sydney. My husband had prepared a new
home for us surrounded by kind neighbors. Though the beginning of the story was filled with
terrible troubles, it worked out perfectly in the end. This family let us feel the warmth from this
unfamiliar city. A small kindness can indeed make a difference.

    Text 1
W: Excuse me, sir. Visiting hours are over now. Your wife must get some rest.
M: Oh, I’m sorry, doctor. I didn’t hear the bell, or I would have left earlier.
    Text 2
M: Hello, my name is Jack. I need to get in shape. How do I register for the classes?
W: We’ll need you to join the gym, and then you could find out which classes fit your schedule the best.
    Text 3
W: I’ll see you at the theatre.
M: Better still, let’s meet in the Red Lion bar to have a nice little talk.
W: Good idea. And I’d love to have a drink there.
    Text 4
M: Hello, my name is John Arbor. And I’m calling to ask about the position advertised in Friday’s Daily Mail.
W: Yes, the position is still open. You could come over and have a talk with us.
    Text 5
M: I have an extra ticket to the concert tonight. Would you like to join me?
W: Thanks! But I already have one. You can ask Emily. She might be interested.
    Text 6
W: Did you know James went out of business?
    M: Really? When was that?
    W: Last month.
M: That’s too bad. He had owned that business for 15 years. What happened?
W: I don’t know. But life must be pretty tough for his family now. His sons are still so young; one is 13, and the other is 10.
M: Well, maybe things are not as bad as they seem to be.
    W: I hope so.
    Text 7
W: Guess what? My mother’s decided to go back to school!
    M: Why?
W: Well, she always loved art, but learned business administration at college because her parents thought it was difficult for an artist to find a job.
M: So, she wants to study art now?
W: Yeah, oil painting. It’s been her dream for a long time.
M: It’s nice to return to learn what she loves. But, Kate, I still think old age should be about peace and relaxation. Hurrying to school every day and having to pass exams sounds a bit too much for her.
W: You know, she retired last year and I’m leaving for the university soon. She needs to find something interesting to do.
M: Well, maybe, if it’s what she wants.
    Text 8
M: Dear listeners, for today’s show, I have with me my colleague, Mary Laney. She has been a radio TV reporter for many years. Mary, welcome to our show.
    W: It’s a pleasure to be here.
M: Would you please tell our listeners who most influenced your decision to become a reporter?
W: Both my parents had a great influence upon my choice of work. Instead of trying to pick out a job for me, they helped me learn those things that led me to it.
M: How did they do that?
W: My father always told me that an education was one of the greatest advantages I could have, one that would always stay with me. He used to tell me that readers were leaders, and encouraged me to read all I could. As a result, I’ve always kept up with the newspapers, faithfully read news magazines and learned to really enjoy books, all of which have been an invaluable help to me in radio and television reporting.
    M: What about your mother?
W: Well, my mother helped me in a much different way.
    Text 9
M: We all know that exercise is good for us. But sometimes it seems too hard to leave the sofa.
W: I can see that. You seldom do exercise.
M: Plus, having the doctor tell us to get two and a half hours of exercise a week doesn’t really help our motivation much.
W: Don’t be discouraged. Now, a new study suggests getting benefits from exercise doesn’t have to be that demanding. Jacob Sattelmair from Harvard University has done a study into how much exercise is needed to lower the risk of heart attacks.
    M: Hmm... interesting.
W: The study showed that people who put in 300 minutes a week of exercise had a 20% lower risk of death due to heart disease. Still, the people who exercise 150 minutes a week did pretty well, too, lowering their death risk by 14%.
M: And what about the people who exercise half as much as that, like what I probably do? Does that help?
W: Of course. Even 15 minutes would help.
    Text 10
W: Here is a piece of news for bird lovers. Scientists have painted a long road red, yellow, and white. They hope to discourage the seabirds from wandering onto the highway. “The area is home to large crowds of birds that come to stay for the season. Young birds are often attracted to the warm road surface and get killed by the traffic,” biology student Hannah tells the broadcaster. The youngsters’ feathers are brown in color. The dark-colored road surface makes the youngsters hard to be noticed. As the number of tourists has grown, so has the amount of traffic on the roads. Biologist Kristin says the plan is to see how the birds respond to the multi-colored road this summer. And if it works, the idea could spread to other parts of the country.
